Oh, there may not be a lot of games in this week. I am off Thursday and Friday and will be going away with my wife for our anniversary. Tomorrow night I get to kick that 4 day weekend off with an all evening conference call.

I may have some time early Thursday to do a game but it is doubtful that I will get much run between tonight and the weekend. I will try to get at least anothe rone in tonight and will sneak one in when I can thoughout the week.

Take your time, but I'm looking forward to it. WhatIfSports seems like a neat engine, I'd never seen it before.

This whole thing just loss all credibility to me.

One of the greatest teams of all time, on both sides of the ball, a team that finished with the number one offense in the league, number three defense, and defeated the John Elway led Broncos in the Super Bowl by a record margin of 55-10, loses 18-10 to the 2005 Seahawks? What a joke.

They lost twice in 1989 to teams that weren't as good as that '05 Seattle squad. It happens.

Yeah, those 2005 Seahawks were a joke. Only won 11 in a row and 13 of their final 15 with their only 2 losses in that span being the regular season finale when they rested their starters and the Super Bowl itself which had just a bit of controversy. To discount their chances because of the historical nature of the team isn't being very fair to the nature of this contest.

And to be clear, I'm not trying to take anything away from the Niners, they were certainly a great team. But even some of the best defenses in the history of the NFL would have had a lot of trouble stopping the run the way Seattle's offensive line (and Alexander) played that year. To say they were a joke is discounting them way too severely.

Arguing that a team with Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Roger Craig, Charles Haley, Ronnie Lott, John Taylor, Tom Rathman, Brent Jones, Keena Turner and Eric Wright, all in the prime of their careers, would lose to the 2005 Seahawks because they had a swell O-line is preposterous. The '89 Niners would have beaten the '05 Hawks 24 times out of 25. In the one time they might lose, it would be due to a massive turnover differential. The 49ers lost two games in 89, once to their eventual NFC Championship foes, the Rams (divisional game at that) by a score of 12-13, and once to the Packers by a score of 21-17 thanks to four turnovers and a collapse of the O-line. The play-by-play that this engine generated looked nothing like the '89 team.

All those guys in their prime and the Seahawks offense still out scored them by 10 points on the season. Sure that was a great Niner's team, no doubt, and if you go for franchise success longevity the Niners have the Hawks by miles, but that 2005 team was a lot more impressive than you're giving it credit for.

To say the 14-2 Niners squad would beat the 13-3 Seahawks team 24 times out of 25 just kind of exemplifies that.

Montana: 3,521 yards, 26 TD, 8 Int
Hasselbeck: 3,459 yards, 24 TD, 9 Int

Craig: 1,054 rushing, 6 TD, 473 receiving, 1 TD
Alexander: 1,880 rushing, 27 TD

Rathman/Strong would be close to a wash blocking with Rathman owning a huge edge in offensive usage (305 rushing, 616 receiving).

So two offenses with very similar overall numbers and two defenses that were at the top of the league.

In 2005 the Seahawks were #1 in scoring offense and #7 on defense. The Niners were #1 in offense and #3 in defense.

Sure, more hall of famers to be on the Niners team but isolating the one season, there's just not as much difference as you're making it out to be. The biggest difference is that the Niners were able to sustain that level of play over a much longer number of seasons than the Seahawks were able to.

Dola, I can understand if you want to make a beef over how the simulator ran the offenses in that game as I'd agree on that as the play selection used by the Seahawks didn't seem all that similar to how they played that season.

I'm also certainly not saying that the Seahawks would own this matchup with regularity but I do think it'd be a hell of a game.

You can't directly compare the statistics to the two teams for the lone reason that they played in different eras. It may not sound like much, but 16 years can change a lot in football. That's like pitting the 1966 Packers against the 1981 49ers and saying the 49ers were better because they had more passing yards...different games entirely. Instead, compare the difference between the leaders on those teams and their competition that year. For example...

In 1989, Joe Montana finished with a rating of 112.4. The next highest was Boomer Esiason at 92.1. Montana set a new bar in 1989 by which all great QB years were measured. Even now, 21 years later, only three QB's have had better years, one of which being his 1989 teammate Steve Young.

Matt Hasselbeck finished the year with a passer rating of 98.2, good for fourth in the league.

Roger Craig may have finished with only 1054 yards rushing, however that was still good enough to place in the top 10, and the backfield combo of Craig/Rathman combined accounted for 2,500 yards from scrimmage. That placed second in the league behind only Thurman Thomas/Larry Kennebrew, and by a difference of 50 yards. In comparison, the backfield tandem of Alexander/Morris didn't even finish in the top three, even with Alexanders 1880 rushing yards, which by the way was only 20 yards more than Tiki Barber.

The Hawks leading receiver was Bobby Engram (778 yards), followed by Joe Jerevicious (694). The two combined for 13 touchdowns. Jerry Rice had that many touchdowns in 1989.

By week 10.

Rice and Taylor finished with a combined 2,560 receiving yards...both players finishing over 1,000 on the year. Rice had 17 TD's, 5 more than the second place Sterling Sharpe, and Taylor had 10...good for fourth in the league.

I think I'm giving the Seahawks plenty of credit. The 49ers of 1989 rank among the greatest single season teams to ever play. They obliterated their three opponents in the playoffs by an average score of 42-8. The Seahawks of 2005 were good, but they couldn't even win the Super Bowl.

Wow, hell of a 4th quarter there. Thought the Brady pick might be their last best chance.

Arguing that one of the great teams of all time couldn't lose to another very good team when they lost twice during that very season weakens the argument considerably. Upsets happen all the time. Just ask the 2007 New England Patriots, who may have had a better team than the '89 Niners.

So by that logic, any team in NFL history that lost a game during the season is more or less on par with everybody else, for the single fact they lost to someone? That's a bit of a stretch if you ask me. My argument is that the 49ers are a significantly better team, and the way the game went based on the play by play I saw, it was not indicative of how the 49ers of that season would have gone about doing business. 24 of 25 games would be wins, and more than likely by multiple touchdowns. They lost that game by more points than they lost any game the entire '89 season, and it wasn't even really close. The offense was completely ineffective the entire game. Nah, I'll stick to my original stance.

Not on par. Travis and I both agree that your 49ers are a better team and would win more often than not. But 24 out of 25 is absolutely absurd. They lost 1 in 8 games during the regular season to teams not as good as that Seattle team. Your conjecture is that their only loss to the '05 Seahawks would be a complete fluke. Evidence shows that the '89 Niners can be beaten and were beaten more often than you contend.

That game showed just how that '89 team could be beaten, much like how any great team gets beat -- ball control and avoiding mistakes. That offense was one of the best all time; the defense was great in context of the season but hardly historically so.

You do also realize that the '05 Seattle head coach knew the '89 49er offense as well or better than anybody on that team?

One more point and I will then agree to disagree with you, Sun Tzu. The '89 49ers played 4 teams in the regular season that finished with 10 wins that year and went 3-2. Including the 3 playoff wins, they went 6-2 against 10 win teams. Note: 3 of those 8 games were against the same LA Rams team.

I do not think it is unreasonable to say that the '05 Seahawks are at least on par with any of those other 10 win teams and likely better than most if not all.

Neither the '07 Patriots nor the '72 Dolphins could have maintained their unbeaten streaks against a playoff quality opponent week after week.

Also, let's not forget that the '89 Niners were nearly swept by the Rams that year. The Rams were leading 17-3 in the second before the Niners turned it on and had Taylor take two 5 yd slants to the house on 90+ yard plays. Rams turned around and dropped the next game and then went on a tear to finish the season. They went into Philly and beat the Eagles before going to Giant stadium and beating the Giants. The '89 Rams are maligned because in the big game they got trounced. That was a good team.

My point is, the '89 Niners were not the best Niners team of the decade. They had a solid regular season, but they were dominant during the playoffs and that is what people remember. The team that was dominant throughout the year was the '84 Niners.
