Lightbulb Evil Afro's College Hoops Failure

Disclaimer: This tale is not for the feint of heart, for this is a tale of death, destruction, and general incompetence. In short, this is the story of Evil Afro's attempt at a college coaching career.

Evil Afro enters the grand ranks of coaching as the newly annointed savior of the Alabama State Hornets of the SWAC. (Pronounced "SWAC")

Now keep in mind that Evil Afro has no coaching skills whatsoever. This job was gotten completely on good looks, and a loose tongue. We need some serious coaching help if there is to be any chance for us to win games.

I'm looking over the roster right now, and it's painful. I don't have a single player rated over 60. In vfact, all mhy players are between 60 and 50, which makes it hard to find a real starting lineup. I think I'm going to just experiment for a few non-conf games before giving anyone on this squad any face-time.

Since the squad is so crappy, most of my efforts are going to be on recruiting. It should be easy to find guys who can make an impact on the team, since nobody on the team is any good. I'm going to try and carpet-bomb prospects until a couple stat to show a little interest, then I'll zero in.

Preseason Recruiting

As promised, I carpet-bombed all the potentially interested recruits. Most of them were * with a few ** thrown in, just in case.

Quickly, recruits started either becoming more interested in better schools, or they revealed just how bad they are at the game of basketball. Within a week, I have my list narrowed down to a few prospects:

#1. ** 6'10" C T.J. Wells: He's got a nice shot and some decent hustle. He's as dumb as a stump, but seems to have an all-around SWAC type game. I love his size.

#2. ** 6'2" PG James Maldonado: I need a PG on this team, and he's the best one that's interested in my school at all. No ratings above C, but none below C-. Did I mention he likes my school?

#3: * 6'0" SG Andree Tudeme: He pretty much sucks, but I do need a shooter. he's got a decent touch (C+) and not too many D ratings. He also lives down the street from me so I can visit him often.

I'm going to start hammering away on these guys until the early signing period is over. Hopefully I can fill 1 or 2 of my 3 available scholorships.

Looks like a fun start

You'll have to let me know how coach mode goes and I might give it a crack myself.

what's the link to the OS sliders, btw?

I posted the sliders in that post where I mentioned them.

I was going to post them when I made that post originally, but it's so much work to get your dynasty going, that I got to excited to start recruiting and forgot.

If I make changes to the sliders at all, I'll be sure to update that post instead of just posting the new sliders somewhere in the topic.

Angry

Midnight Madness

vs

Or
"The Debacle in the ..... something-acle"

I normally skip this game, but the Fro needs to learn at least one player's name before the season starts.

First off, this is my first CH2k7 game on the 360. I've played a number of seasons on the xbox, but this is like a completely different game. Obviously the graphics are going to be better, but holy crap! I've never seen graphics like this in a sports game. The animations blow me away, and even the crowd looks good! Anyway, I wipe myself off, and get down to the game...

The tipoff goes to ASU (heh) and I need another wipedown. Yeah, it's that cool looking.

The yellow PG brings the ball up and stops at the 3-point line. The team sets up in what looks like an iso play, and then the PG goes to work. jab step-crossover-spin-HOLE!!!!! I have another "episode" because I've never seen anyone take anyone off the dribble in ANY basketball game EVER!

I'm getting pretty excited. I might have a player. Let's wait and see if he continues before giving him face-time.

The black team takes it up, and starts cycling the ball around. Someone on the yellow gets gaught in a double-team. The yellow swings it around, and some small dude gets an open look. He drives, then beats the coming defender baseline and lays it in.

SWEET!

black takes it up again, but turns it over. The yellow runs the fast break, finishing with a sweet bounce-pass across the lane to a streaking big man.

*needs wipe again*

Man, I'm getting so pumped abou the squad! I might have some offense afterall.

black misses the next shot, and yellow gets the rebound. They bring it up, and start cycling. The wing starts a drive, but then pulls up as the defender sags back too far. Shot AND ONE!

Hits the ft.

"Next bucket by yellow, and I'm looking up someone for face-time"

...

10 minutes later, and it's still 7-2

After that explosive start, the arena is filled with the sounds of CLANK, DONG, CLANK, *AIRBALL*, SWAT.....

I give up with 2 mins left in the half. Yellow "wins" 7-2

I hate my team.

No facetime today.

We totally suck this game. It took nearly half the first half to get up to 6 points. Luckily, SG Hoskin started to heat up late in the 1st, and into the 2nd half. He seems to be a long-range threat, and that's what we're going to need if we are to score any points.

My big men got dominated down low. They are just too short. I really need to pick up some size.

I'm hitting Wells and Maldonado hard this week. Both are coming in for a visit this Saturday, which just happens to be the start of the signing period. *insert evil plan laugh here*

Wells, Maldanado, and Tudeme all get scholorship offers this week. Here's hoping they fall for my slick salesman charms...

C Wells: 96% Interest, and I'm 2nd on his list of schools behind MVSU. He's ranked as the #625 player and the #89 C in the nation.

PG Maldanado: 93% interest. 1st on his list ahead of MER. He is not ranked.

SG Tudeme: 80% interest. 1st on his list ahead of ETSU and MORE. He's not ranked either.

I really need some new players. It's painful to watch these scrubs play. I basically get about 5 minutes into the game before getting sick to my stomach. I simmed to the end of this abortion. I guess they did better without me watching. Maybe the Fro is too intimidating.

The signing period starts, and I have my prized recruits in town for a visit. Maldonado seem genuinely interested, but Wells's celly is "blowin up", as the kids put it.

Next thing you know, Wells is being picked up at the cafateria by a Mississippi Valley State car.

I hate them.

I hear on the Ocho that Wells signs up with MVSU. What a dick. I'm going to prank call him later.

Maldonado is up to 98% interested, and nobody else has contacted him with an offer. Maybe he's not really all that good....

Too late now, I guess.

Tudeme is up to 80% interested. I don't think I can convince him enough in this short signing period to come to ASU, so I'll probably just try to string him along until the late signing period. I'll concentrate on Maldonado.

After this week, I'll try to get my undercalssmen pipeline going, as well as find another big-man to recruit.

PG Sessoms is killing me. 0 for 7 last game, and now 0 for 11. Look, I get your ankle hurts, but STOP FUCKING SHOOTING!

He's earned his way to the pine for the next game. Other than that, Hoskins is really turning into the sniper of the team. He's a sophomore, so I don't have to worry about him leaving too soon.

I sure hope this win helps me out with my recruiting. I can't afford to lose Maldonado and Wells in the same week.

We started the Freshman PG Alloway over the Sr Sessoms, with pretty decent results (individually). Our defense just wasn't good enough for the win. Alloway definitely deserves another start.

i guess we're back to the 0-for from the PG position again. I'm really at a loss what to do here. Maybe I'll just give the Senoir his spot back and hope his shooting woes were because of his tender ankle.

It's either that, or just put hoskins at PG and let him chuck it up every time down.

The signing period ends, and nobody signs on to the Hornets. i don't blame them, we're in pretty bad shape.

Maldonado is up to 99% interest, but I guess that one time I accidentally withdrew his scholorship hurt me in the long run.

Tudeme is at 85%, and one of the schools chasing him dropped out. It's just ASU and MORE now.

I've added 2 more big men to my target list.

* 6'11" C Sonny Valencia: Interest at 64%, and I'm 3rd on his list behind NDSU and WIU. I might have a problem making up the difference there.

* 6'10" C Bingo Huff: Interest is at 67%, and I'm behind STET and BCC for his services.

After that, I don't really have any decent Sr prospects.

I don't know what to say about this game. We were getting blown out for most of the game, and then they put in the scrubs. It's really hard to learn anything from the ass-kicking we took for most of it.

In the interest of not bogging this dynasty down with too many meaningless games, I'm only going to post box scores from conference games and other important ones.

Besides, it's less embarassing.

Maldonado is still looking like a lock to join the Happy Hornets. 100% Interest, and the next closest school is at about 70%. His scouting is starting to show me why nobody else wants him. He has a C- in every category except offense, where he has a C.

I'll still take him, though.

Tudeme is still holding out a bit. 86% interest, and now ELON is catching up with me. Seriously, dude, you are a 1 star recruit!

I've narrowed my big-man search to Sonny Valencia. 6'11" and 271 lbs. He's now at 80% interest, and has a scholorship offer from me. NDSU is still chasing, but I'm the top school now. I'm really going after this guy hard.

Next week, conference play starts!

Hoskin is really turning cold-blooded. He was firing up shots whenever he had the smallest look. I'm getting pretty excited at the idea of 2 more years of development for him. On the other hand, Sessoms continued his dominance of the game, in a bad way. 7 turnovers really killed any chance we had of taking this game. The dude just plain sucks ass. He gets the ball, and then pretends it's a fast-break, even if the other team is set up on defense.

ugh

The Freshman gets the starting PG spot for the immediate future.

We really dominated this game for long stretches. When I had to go to the bench, that's when they made runs. Obviously, I need to work on my depth quite a bit.

You know, the best thing about doing a dynasty for these kinds of games is that when you aren't playing, you can look back and make some adjustments based on player performances.

First, let me slob on Hoskin again. I love that guy. He's stone cold.

One thing I noticed this game, is that SF Carroll is pretty nice coming off the bench. If he has another decent game, I might try him at the starting SF spot. Dixon is better, but it just seems like he's always fouling guys at the wrong time, or making a bad play.

First off, screw you guys for stealing Wells from me. I hate your team already. (Not that I hold a grudge or anything)

Secondly, what's with that full-court press for 90% of the game? Seriously, it's not enough that you have better players, and my Center, but you have to rub it in.

Just for that, I left a turd "somewhere" in the concessions area.

heh

Anyway, Carroll didn't have a huge game, but Dixon had another bad one with the turnovers. Carroll is getting the start now.

That's now 2 freshmen that have unseated starters. (Granted, Dixon is a freshman too)

God I hate MVSU

Totally dominating performance by the Hornets. I'm starting to think that Hoskin is really White Chocolate reincarnated in a little black man's body. Dude got a steal just inside half court, and immediately launched a 3. He also was the wing on a fast break, and launched a 3 from about 4 feet outside the arc...

ON A FAST BREAK!

Anyway, Sessoms and Dixon are a really nice duo on the 2nd line. They both basically try to drive every play, and if it's not there, they kick it out to the other one. It's pretty cool.

This was just not a good game. Nothing really seemed to work very well. PF Konopka showed a few good post moves, but often he put the ball up into the back of the backboard.

Right now I'm 5th in the SWAC. That turd of a team MVSU is in 1st with a conference record of 6-1.

I hate them.

Recruiting

I'm still #1 on Maldonado's list, but something happened to Valencia during the last week. I dropped from near 90% interest to 71%!

What the hell did I do man?

was it the turd incident?

Actually, now that I look at the recruiting, a number of guys dropped interest significantly.

hmmm.... I wonder if there is a national "rethink your future" day.

Man, someone better tell me next year. Maybe I can rethink this job.

The last month of the regular season went like a whirlwind! When players started picking up injuries, the lack of depth on the Hornets really started to show. We lost many a game, the worst being another embarassing lost at the hands of the hated Miss Valley squad.

By the way, I hope you washed out those coffee cups before using them.

Anyway, we ended up a respectable 10-17 on the year. Next up is the SWAC playoffs, and guess who we were lucky enough to draw in round 1...

Miss Valley.

Screw you guys.

I'm going to rework my playbook a bit before the tourney starts. I REALLY want to beat these ass-holes.

Recruiting:

I ended up outrecruiting everyone on Maldonado and Tudeme. I am now the only school above 60% on either of their lists. (100% and 98% respectively)

Valencia is still in the mix, even after the massive drop in interest. NDSU is slightly ahead of me, but I'm not dead yet. (75%)

maybe a good showing in the SWAC tourney will help sway him.

Even if Valencia bolts for the wonderful weather in ND, I have a few other players that have decent interest. They mostly suck, but I'll need to fill all 3 scholorships this year.
