Here is my suggestion for leagues and internation competitions. A simple rule that would make the matches much more enjoyable.

If you are caught flopping badly on video after the game, you are suspended for one game. I'm not talking about milking legitimate contact. I'm talking about guys who act like they stepped on a landmine when the other guy never touched them. With HD and how close we can get views, you can tell the obvious flops.

One of the Dutch guys just got booked because someone was glanced by him and reacted straight out of the Zapruder film.

I'm also for the NBA adding this rule too.

My other suggestion is for ESPN to just turn off the stadium mics. You don't force us to mute the games and don't piss off the simpletons who need to blow a plastic horn for 2 hours.

I read a couple of articles over the weekend that talk about the massive difference between in the stadium and watching on tv - ESPN (or whoever is doing the feed) is already deadening the noise a ton in order to get it to where it is, and they're much, much louder in person.

Is it annoying? Yes.

However, I phase it out within 5 minutes. Live I'm sure it's a nightmare, but on TV I really don't notice it after a few minutes. The people reacting like someone is stabbing them in the eye with a hot poker when they have to listen to it seems a bit much to me.

I agreed with the opinion in those articles. I was so excited when Ghana scored, yet due to the horns, I didn't get to hear the singing and dancing by the Ghana fans. Those kind of moments are absolutely fantastic. It's a real shame that experience has been taken out of the stadiums.

Was off the same opinion for a while. However, a friend of mine has been in Sout Africa for a few days now and from what he´s been telling me it really is affecting play on the pitch as the players literally can´t here anything that´s been said (screamed, really) from more than 5 metres away, which gets really apparent watching the games in the stadium as you pick up a lot more (frustrated) hand gestures by players signalling just that.
So considering that i really wouldn´t mind them banned or highly reduced in some way or the other.
And even beyond the practical aspect, soccer is a sport where there is interaction between the players and fans in that both really do influence each other.

I absolutely don´t mind a host nation expressing themselves any way they please, but it´s kind of beside the point if 2 nations with 10000 fans in the stadium meet and all you here is the Vuvuzela.

So maybe ban them for all non-SA matches ...

I couldn't imagine being in the stadium. I read that ear plugs are selling like crazy and that some people are worried about hearing damage. I wonder if this is the reason that attendance has been so poor.

I guess some of the blame has to go to FIFA for giving them a World Cup and not realizing that this would destroy the entire atmosphere of what makes it such a great event.

That being said - I think the horns should be banned because of what it does to the live experience/play on the field. I'm against Thundersticks and other artificial noise makers as well.

The over-the-top reaction from TV watchers just doesn't make sense to me.

To me, the annoying part isn't the sound of the horns, I've gotten used to it by now and to me it's become the sound of World Cup 2010. What I do dislike is the part where you can't hear the referees whistling, or moreover, the chants from the fans in the stands.

Cameroon looks terrible, like they aren't even looking to pass or move into space. Everything is run straight at the defense and lose the ball. Eto has been completely anonymous as well. If they play like this they are going to get destroyed by the Dutch.

I didn't notice the horns as much in the England/US match as I did the day before. So perhaps it was just worse for the SA match, or perhaps the broadcasters are doing some fancy work with the mics to tone it down. The other aspect is that I was actively watching the game and not trying to sort of listen while I work, which I'm sure makes a difference as well.

That said, I still think the horns are total bullshit and should be banned. Half of my enjoyment of the World Cup is the atmosphere, which is singing and chanting and whatnot. This year its just bees droning on for two hours. I absolutely think it is tarnishing the experience for many, many fans (casual or otherwise).

The other thing that amazes me is how this has somehow become some kind of fight for the South African 'culture' and the 'history of the vuvuzela'. Really, you have history with a plastic horn that plays one note? I somehow doubt that goes back more than 15 years. This isn't some kind of tribal instrument they've been playing for hundreds of years. Give it a rest, leave the fucking thing at home, and go cheer like a normal human being. Good grief.

I've maintained since the confederations cup last year that those stupid horns worst effect was giving new viewers the easiest excuse in the world to not even try watching the game.

It happened in the USA match Saturday. Was at a friend's house all day and let them know I'd like to watch the game. We were there to play board games/video games and then watch the baseball game later that night. They didn't even know about the soccer game.

Within 30 seconds of turning it on, the entire conversation was about the stupid buzzing sound and at first opportunity, they found something outside of the range of the sound to do.

I'm sure this scenario happened in a lot of places. The previous couple of posts here show that, too, I think.

It just sucks, and I would like to beat some sense into all these idiots that can't find something better to do that blow on the stupid horn.

Last night I read a few articles which said FIFA is considering banning the vuvuzelas because of possible ear damage it might cause for the spectators. I don't mind them much but it'd be nice if they were done away with so people can stop complaining about them and focus on the games.
