1 Aug, 1612 – Delagoa Bay is now a full province!

Delagoa Bay – Between Inhambane and Natal is this tropical farming province, where 1.10 ducats are currently made. A fort is ordered.

The next target is…Palawan. This narrow island chain is north of Brunei and the island of Borneo.

It is not tropical, so we expect quicker building province. From Palawan, our next target will likely be the Philippines.

15 Oct – We put down natives in Menade

2 Dec – We build -Constable in Pose; Counting House in Makassar; Canal in Flores, Sumba, Sumbawa, Timor

1 Jan, 1613 – We invest in Admin 16, We can now build College and Mints

24 Feb – France is colonizing north of Brittany, in Taqamkuk. (north Canada)

27 May – Let me give you an updated picture of the Indies!

I starred Palawan for you, and the yellow circle is around the six colony group of Halmahera, Tidore, Ternate, Ceram, Buru and Ampom. To its west is the island of Sulawesi. Where 5k troops are is Makassar, the 3k in Menape, the 2k is Bone, and the middle is Pose. You can still see our Javanese holdings plus those in south of the chain in Timor, Flores, Sumba, and Sumbawa.

The next map is the Philippines. I know a lot of you may not know it very well, so I’m zoomed in a bit for you.

The top is Samtoy and Cagayan. Next you can barely make out Manila. Visayas is below that, obscured by the 4000 troops there. Then Tagoloan, and Maguindanao at the bottom. To the left is Palawan and at the bottom center where it says “Sulu Sea” is the islands of Sulu.

13 May – We win in against Taiwanese natives.

I order a Conquistador and Explorer in Whangarei. We set out to Midway

20 Aug – We win in Irian again

I order a manufactory in Bone

13 Jan 1638 – Manufactory ordered for Mecca

I want to shut down any route Portugal has into this area, no matter how bad. That means I need to take up any remaining provinces Portugal can use to get a foothold. So I, sigh, have to take the three provinces of Madagascar.

First target is Boina, northern Madagascar

11 Nov – 200 years ago, my great ancestor the Dapir for the Nabhan family began a far-reaching plan clearly inspired by Allah himself.

Our glories have been great under the Nabhan family. Sultan Nasir Sultan, 3/3/2, is 73, and has ruled for quite some time. His son, Salim, is 52 and 2/3/4.

We receive five bonuses for controlled at least 20% of the trade:

Tea Trade - -33% upkeep for advisors
Coffee Trade – Fort Defense +10%
Spice Trade - +10% Spy Offense
Slave Trade – Global Tariffs - +10%
Ivory Trade – Diplomatic Relations +2

We are currently getting 90.85 ducats monthly in surplus to our treasury.

We have 79 troops, 117 ships,

The Omani Caribbean Syndicate is our colonial nation, and we have Mogadishu, Funj, Adjuuraam. Adal and Kilwa as protectorates, which has expanded our base in East Africa.

Taxation – 44.19
Production – 70.33
Traade – 60.56
Gold – 16.36
Tariffs – 1.66

And then our outlay

Advisors 37.84
Army – 29.01
Navy – 28.85
Colonies - 6.20
Missionaries – 0.41

Alight – maps!

Let’s start with a general map of the whole world for you, with a focus on us, obviously!

Here’s a long range one of North America. You can see Portugal all up and down the coast in Texas, Florida, the Americas. France is in Canada, and Brittany has a couple of possessions.

Now Asia –

You can see that Ayutthaya is taking it to China and has control of many Ming Dynasty provinces. Our Indies nation looks rather nice I think.

And finally, the Americas

You can see the cast holdings of Castile quite well. Great Britain has built a decent colony in the north too.

The Eleven Goals of Our Ancestors:

Our 11 Goals!

1) We need an alliance with a major power.

We are number 1.

2) We want to become the premier trading nation in the Indian Ocean. There are many great nations along the area, but we want to be the dominant one.

Done, and now taking action to keep Portugal out permanently.

3) We have to control a proper navy in order to meet our goals.

Now that we have the best navy in the world, we have finished this goal. But we need to keep building to continue

4) We would like to colonize the Indian Ocean.

Almost done.

5) We need to fend off the overly hostile Yemen. They are blatantly seeking our elimination. Probably because they are Sunni.

Yemen is now ours

6) Similarly, the adjacent Najd is also very aggressively looking towards us. Both neighbors are Sunni, and it gets a little too hot here.

As is Najd

7) We eventually want to see Mecca in Shi’ite hands.

We have not had an opportunity to convert them – it would fail. But it is ours. Done.

8) In light of these things, it seems necessary to build our nation militarily, as well as diplomatically.

Done. Top navy. Top four army. Militarily, we have arrived.

9) Nearby one province nation Haasa is Shi-ite as well, and could be a good early ally.

Haasa is ours. Done.

10). Westernize our Technology

Done

11). Expand further abroad. Do to Portugal what they planned for us. Expand into the Pacific and Atlantic and move into stronger places against Europe.

Ongoing

12). Have a monthly income of at least 100 gold while owning three level advisors in all three areas!

Let’s push our economics even further.

And we conclude this 200 year survey of the greatest nation the world has ever known – Oman!

I’ll show you the only major changes in the world, here on the West Coast of North America.

As you can see, we have company. Both the UK and Castile have grabbed land here. They are actively colonizing the region too. I figured I’d head north and let them duke it out in the south.

That was fun. I feel that, right now, I accomplished my basic goal of having Oman as the Arabian Portugal. We didn't expand past Arabia, We didn't control every African province, just some. We only took a little in war. We were a trading and colonial force, more than anything else. We've reached the end of a fairly realistic parabola.

Alright, that was a lot of fun. Steam says I put 59 hours into that dynasty.

Now let’s do my usual post-game critique of the latest expansion or game. Since this was my first EU4 play-through, what’d I think?

I think they pulled out some overdue mechanics, like policy sliders and the old economic system of investing in tech advancement and stability. This system is better, because it forces me to balance economy against Ideas against techs against building, against stability. That’s a much more improved model. So I like it.

I also like the addition of new provinces (especially islands). For example, Ampom is a very important island, historically. It was the HQ for the Dutch East India Company and the location of the Portuguese in the area after they were kicked out of Ternate. You need an island like that in the game. I like colonizing Cocos (which wasn’t in before) or having additional Pacific Island options.

Now I still don’t think they do a great job with the Indies. For example, the Banda Islans are a group of ten islands, all small, in the Sea of Banda, east of Timor. In the game, they are simply a part of Timor. That’s dumb. The Bandas are among the wealthiest spice islands in the area. Why? Because a tree grows there, and nowhere else in the world (until like 200 years ago when it was moved ot other places). That tree is the Nutmeg tree, and both the spices of Nutmeg and Mace come from it. You could easily take the chain in the map, and just make it the Banda province.

And there a few places like that that still bug me.

I also still wish the trade goods could be improved. I love the addition of Cocoa in a recent patch. I’d still love to see Pearls, Dyes, Gems, and Whales. I also still want the ability to switch to a new random trade good in colonies, at a cost of power or ducats. This happened in real life frequently, as colonies moved from Fish to Cotton or from Grain to Tobacco and from Pearls to Silver.

I think colonization remains fun, and it was slower. I loved the changes to the merchants/diplomats, and such. This was not my normal dynasty. I wasn’t conquering Alexandria, Cairo, Jerusalem and Byzantium. I didn’t wage war in the Middle East for more than 100 years. I only took five provinces from Kilwa in Africa and five provinces from Makassar and Majapahit in the Indies.

I loved the additional diplomatic options too. I thought the game was well-done. It got rid of a bunch of the tedious activities in the previous games, like sending out merchants and such. Colonizing became more organic.

Overall, it was worth playing and I know I’ll come back to it again and again.
