Three Sport Stars - the Harden brothers (multiple game dynasty)

This is the story of three brothers – the Harden boys, from the St. Louis suburb of Chesterfield, Missouri. Their parents, Dave and Joy Harden, were both teachers in local schools, and the boys had a happy and relatively stable homelife, which always focused around athletics. Dave had played baseball up to the college level for Missouri, but never had a chance to go pro, and he always encouraged his boys to fight as hard as they could for what they wanted. Joy had an interest in travel and foreign languages, and was always up for any kind of adventure.

Ken is the oldest brother – a bruising 6'5” young man weighing 206 pounds in high school, he grew up playing soccer and football but it was soon apparent that football was where his real skill was. He loved playing quarterback and practiced constantly, and was soon showing his talent in school. When he reached Marquette High School he was the obvious choice for QB1 for the Mustangs, and soon showed a wealth of talent that had college scouts all over him. He is very smart also, with a 3.34 GPA through his senior year and a 1254 test score, and wants to go to a school with a very high academic pedigree.

I will be following Ken's progress in TCY and FOF 2K7, starting in 2004.

Ken's brother Mark is a year younger than him, but also a sports star. The tallest of the three brothers, Mark Harden is 6'7” (thanks to two tall parents) and weighs 228 as he completes his senior year at Marquette High School. Ken played several sports as a child but due to his sprouting height was drawn to basketball early on – he now plays power forward for the Mustangs and has been dominating opponents all year, not to mention fending off college recruiters with a stick. Mark was so good that he was not only named an All-State player for Missouri, but named to the All-American team. He hasn't hit the books as hard as Ken did, but has a completely acceptable 2.63 GPA and 1050 test score as he heads to college.

I will be following Mark in Fast Break College Basketball 2010 and Fast Break Basketball starting in 2005.

Jackson Harden is the third, and youngest brother – two years younger than Mark. He is 6'2” and 185 pounds, smaller than his brothers but still quite athletic. Baseball was Jackson's sport from early on, as well as tennis. Jackson always had talent as a pitcher, and by high school was the team's ace, carrying them to the brink of the state championship in his senior year. He wants to play pro ball and entered the professional draft right out of high school. He is expected to be a very high draft pick and hopes to be a successful starting pitcher in the bigs.

I will be following Jackson in Out of the Park Baseball 2011 starting in 2007. I will be using the MLB teams but fictional players.

Ken Harden's senior year, and he has to deal with a deluge of collegiate attention. Ken is rated as the 16th best player in the country now, and the 6th best quarterback, so he will certainly have his choice of colleges. He is interested in a team that has good academics and prestige.

After the first few recruiting weeks, Ken has offers from Purdue and Boston College, and interest from Georgia. He is visiting Purdue – it would seem to be a good fit as it is close by, has fantastic academics in his chosen major, and excellent prestige. After two more weeks he made it official by committing to Purdue.

Taking a look at Purdue, their excellent current QB is a senior. Behind him is a redshirt junior who has a lot of potential, but Ken should have a good shot at the starting job depending on how fast he develops. The team ended up a disappointing 5-6, however.

Ken
It's not really a surprise, but Ken gets redshirted this season. Donovan Watson will be the team's quarterback this year and Ken will focus on his academics and learn the playbook. The team did turn things around this year and finished with an 8-4 year and a trip to a bowl game, where they lost to Florida 48-38. Michigan won the national championship this year, in a legendary contest over rival Notre Dame, 23-21.

Mark
Mark is completing his senior year on the basketball team. He is ranked as the #32 player in the country, and the 9th best power forward. He has a great inside shooting game, good hands, decent defense, and good shot blocking skills. He's a strong player and looks to have a great collegiate career ahead of him, though some expect he may leave college early for the pros.

He received a barrage of offers, and early top schools are Oklahoma State, Butler, Illinois, and Kansas. Soon he narrowed down the choices to just two, Oklahoma State and Butler. Both schools would be excited to have him but in the end he committed to Oklahoma State.

Ken
Ken will start the season behind Donovan Watson in the depth chart, as Watson completes his senior year. He will have a battle on his hands with Xavier Gretsky – Gretsky has more current talent but Ken has a lot more potential. Gretsky was the backup last year and may be again, but he is also a senior. Ken may have to wait till next season to get his real shot.

Ken ends up third string, and sees barely any playing time, throwing only 7 passes all year, for 23 yards and an interception. Purdue had an average year this year, finishing 6-5, but it is good enough to get them to a bowl game. Unfortunately they are matched against 9-2 Auburn, but they stun them 28-21 to win some glory for their season. Michigan completes an undefeated season by beating Texas 24-21 to win their second championship in a row.

Mark
Mark arrives in Stillwater, OK this year with a lot of dreams of what he will be able to do for the Cowboys. He finds himself playing for a young team with few star players aside from SG Burt Jemison. He has a good shot of starting at PF, or at the very least getting plenty of playing time. With his powerful inside game, he should be a solid scorer at least. There's a lot of potential on this squad and it will be interesting to see what they can do with it.

Mark had a good freshman year – he started at PF in every game, and was solid throughout, but often took the back seat scoring wise to outside shooters Jemison and Goldstein. He ended up with 10.2 PPG, and was solid on defense and led the team in shot blocking. This strong freshman performance netted him a Freshman All-Conference award, as well as Freshman All-American.

The Cowboys put together a good season this year – they struggled against top 50 teams but their final record was 19-14 and they finished 6th in the Big 12, with Oklahoma leading the conference as the #1 team in the land. They were on the bubble to make it into the tourney but came just short and played in the NIT. Once there they went on a run, defeating Baylor, California, and Northern Iowa to win the Midwest bracket, only to be defeated by Clemson in the finals. Mark felt this was a pretty good result and he can't wait for next year.

2007 Season

Ken
Ken enters the 2007 season as the undisputed starting QB for Purdue. There are only two other quarterbacks on the team, and both are much less developed than Ken. It's a bad situation if Ken gets hurt but if not, he has a good chance to be the starter for the next three years, depending on new recruits.

Purdue had a great season this year – finishing 9-3 and #13 in the country, and knocked out Alabama 24-14 in their bowl game. Ken was a big part of this, as he stepped up from game 1 and had a great season – throwing for over 3,000 yards with a 60.9 percentage, and 30 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Running back Sammie Rhodes pounded out over 1,000 yards on the ground as well. This great performance got him named the Big 10 second team QB.

LSU beat Penn State in the championship game, 35-23.

Mark
The Cowboys look to have a very strong team this year – returning 4 starters from last year's team, and many of them are quite improved from last year. Mark and Nolan Hauser are strong inside scorers, and new SG Matt Harris can shoot lights out from the outside.

Mark was a bigger part of the team offensively this year, with 13.4 PPG, second on the team. He also improved in rebounding (5.2) and shots blocked (1.1) and finished with an impressive 7.37 +/-. Oklahoma State was even better this year than last, finishing 24-9 and #21 in the country, and 4th in the Big 12. They ended up as a #5 seed in in the NCAA Western region, had no trouble with Creighton in the first round but lost to North Carolina in the second.

Jackson
Jackson finished his senior year in high school in spectacular fashion, going 10-0 with an unhittable 0.79 ERA in 15 starts. He is expected to go very high in the MLB draft this year – he's considered the first or second best pitching prospect, and will most likely go in the top 5. He has a good sinker, slider, changeup, and splitter, though he will need a good bit of development in the minors.

In the end Jackson Harden was the #1 pick in the draft, by the Kansas City Royals. He would have preferred his hometown Cardinals but Kansas City is a good second choice, being close to home. He was signed with a bonus of around $8,000,000, a staggering amount for the kid just out of high school.

Jackson moved through all the levels of the minors this year before ending up on the Royals roster after roster expansion. He looked sharp throughout the minor leagues, baffling hitters with his sinker. Most of his other pitches will need more development but his sinker is just fine now. In the majors he pitched a few times in relief and also looked good – the Royals are very happy with his progress so far. Unfortunately the Royals were terrible this year, finishing 60-102, the worst team in the league. They are hoping that Jackson will be part of turning the team around. All three brothers were excited to see the Cardinals win the World Series this year, over Toronto, 4-1.

2008 Season

Ken
Ken would be starting again this year, and he has really improved after last season – our scout thinks he's reached his maximum, so it will be great to see what he can do this year.

Purdue finished 8-3 this year and #22 in the country, despite struggling through some costly injuries. The worst was their star RB Sammie Rhodes who tore his ACL in Week 1 and was lost for the season. A lack of good pass blockers led to Ken being sacked 49 times this year, but the team overcame those obstacles, and beat Auburn 14-10 in their bowl game. Ken remained consistent, putting up similar numbers to last year – throwing for 3,430 yards with 25 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Ken got some Heisman consideration and quite a few votes but in the end the award went to Tyrone Ogu, Penn State's star quarterback. Ogu led Penn State to the national championship this year, 45-35 over Florida State. Ken was named the Big 10's second team All-Conference QB.

Mark
Mark is already considered a prospect for the NBA, but he decides to stay in college for his junior year. This will be a more challenging year for Oklahoma State – their star center has graduated, leaving few good options to replace him. They will also have a new SF to join the three returning starters.

Mark's season came to a crashing halt early in the season, when he tore a ligament in his leg after only three games. He played spectacularly in those three games, with almost 20 points a game. The injury left him out for the rest of the regular season, but he was back in playing shape in time for the conference tournament. Somehow, even without him, the Cowboys played well, finishing third in the Big 12 with a 21-9 mark. They ended up as the #5 seed in the South region, now with Mark back in the lineup. They got past Illinois State in the first round, and then Villanova in the second, with Mark firing 23 and 22 points in those games. Then they stunned Florida, the #1 team in the country, 82-75, with 19 points from Mark leading them to the Elite 8. Another win over Virginia and then they were in the Final 4! Finally they were brought down by Arizona (the eventual champion) but it was a tremendous run.

Mark only played in 9 games but ended up with almost 18 PPG and 8 rebounds per game. He decided that after this great run he would declare for the pros next year instead of returning to Oklahoma State.

Jackson
Jackson started this year in Triple A but soon moved up to the Royals roster as a starting pitcher and stayed there the rest of the year. After two years of being the worst team in baseball, Kansas City saw great improvement this year, finishing third in the AL Central with a 76-86 record. They also signed a potential superstar this year in outfielder Bailey Worley – he needs some development but he looks like he could be an amazing hitter.

Not surprisingly, Jackson struggled in his starting role – a 19 year old facing major league talent is going to face difficulties, and Jackson is especially having trouble with his control, which just hasn't improved much so far. Training with major league coaches has helped him put a little more velocity on his pitches, though, and he is improving across the board, slowly. Unfortunately in September he suffered from shoulder inflammation that kept him on the DL for the rest of the season, and after it. He should be good to go again by the start of next year.

The San Diego Padres defeated the Minnesota Twins in 7 games in this year's World Series.

It's been fun to run so far - if nothing else it's neat to get to use so many text sims in one dynasty, even ones I don't like but just took for completeness (Fast Break Basketball.)

2009 Season

Ken
Ken's senior year at Purdue was starting and he was excited – he knew he was a possible prospect for the NFL and wanted to do well to improve his chances. RB Sammie Rhodes was healthy again and should contribute to the team this year, and he had a couple of excellent receivers to throw to as well.

Purdue had a 7-4 season this year, and Ken had his best season yet, ratings-wise. He completed 63.7% of his passes, for 3,249 yards, and threw 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Purdue was matched against Texas A&M in their bowl game and in his final college game Ken saw his team routed by the Aggies, 34-9. Oregon State defeated LSU in the championship game, 38-17. Ken was awarded the Big 10 Most Valuable Player award for his efforts this year. He felt his college career was successful and looked forward to trying to take it to the next level.

Mark
Mark entered the NBA draft with high hopes – he's a good inside scorer, and he's got versatility – decent defense, decent hands, so he hopes this will give him an edge over more specialized players. He ended up picked by the Detroit Pistons as the 13th overall pick, and can't wait to play with the best players in the country. He signed with Detroit for a four year, roughly 10 million dollar contract as well. Looking at the Pistons roster, he should get some solid playing time either as both C and PF. He starts the season as second in the depth chart at PF and third for C.

The Pistons are pretty lousy this year, finishing 36-46. Mark played in every game, averaging about 15 minutes per game, and was a valuable reserve for the team. He averaged only 6 points per game, but added rebounds and solid defense as well. He was named to the 2009 NBA All-Rookie Team, and really couldn't be happier with his first year in the pros.

Jackson
Jackson was anxious to turn things around this year and show the Royals what he can do. He is still struggling to improve his control and some of his pitches, but the team is confident he will get there.

Jackson had a good year, but doesn't have his full control and his ERA and WHIP suffered. He turned things around from being 8-13 last year to 16-12 this year and was the leading pitcher on the Royals staff. If he can fulfill his potential and improve his control he should be a really dominant pitcher.

I like it. Wonder if there will be any big busts, and dinner conversations where Dad says "You're such a disappointment."

Well one thing that already happened that I basically re-ran was when I put Mark into the NBA, he was originally drafted by the Nuggets, then unexplainedly released, and never re-signed by anyone. This didn't seem to be a very fair result so I re-ran it and he seems much better off with the Pistons.
