Journeys of a Speed Demon (a FBCB 2010 dynasty)
Fpres ver Magnusson was a household name in the world of 1990's Texas boys basketball. Thanks to lightning quick reflexes and a killer jump shot, ver Magnusson led his squad to three consecutive Class 5A championships. He was on the fast track to the ACC, where he would be the third generation of ver Magnusson to take the floor for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. ver Magnusson was giddy with excitement over the prospect of playing alongside a highly-touted big man from St. Croix by the name of Tim Duncan. The world would never see this duo in action, however.
In a split second during the '94 state championship game, the young guard's basketball career ended before it began. Fast forward fifteen years... Unable to quell his competitive spirit, Fpres ver Magnusson decides to make a run for the Demon Deacons after all. Unlike his father and grandfather before him though, he is determined to bring Wake Forest its first NCAA men's basketball championship. There's just one catch. He'll have to do it as a coach, and he'll have to work his way up the ranks. ----- Welcome to my new dynasty. My BBCF dynasty attempt from last year became the victim of a corrupted file, so I'll be taking more backup precautions this time around. Here's the setup for this dynasty... I decide to kick things off with the hometown school.
Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) Roadrunners UTSA is part of the Southland Conference which is comprised of twelve teams. Lamar, Sam Houston State, Texas State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Arlington, and UTSA make up the West Division. McNeese State, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, and Central Arkansas make up the East Division. Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin are the class of the conference. UTSA is middle-of-the-pack as far as prestige goes. We start out with a 32. Current Goal: The A.D. starts me off with a straightforward goal. We're to finish with at least a .500 conference record. Season Budget: We're starting out with $230,000 to use towards staff salaries and recruiting for the year. Staff Hiring: We start out with nobody on staff. I want to keep our staff budget at just over 50% of our total budget, with the recruiting coordinator earning the lion's share of the money. After a slew of rejections, three guys finally step up to the plate for us. Code:

We don't receive any invitations to preseason tournaments this year.
I send out 13 scheduling requests, and we get 13 acceptances. That was pleasantly easy. Here's our schedule for 2009-10. Code:
Our marquee game, without a doubt, is the November 27th contest in Austin. Hopefully, we'll have a few wins under our belt by then, so the beatdown won't be as demoralizing. |

July 2009 (Recruiting)
We have 3 scholarships to fill this season as we're due to lose C Trent Vuong, SF Cornelius Michaud, and SF Lucius Gabbard to graduation. I decide to target the highest rated guys who have the greatest amount of interest in our program, regardless of position. Our first set of targets...
C Jed Lynch C Daron Gibson C Eric Sherman C Albert Thompson PF Max List PF Jose Smyth SF Michale Eberly SF Jason Randell SF Arthur Phillips SF Jay Ruggiero SG Carl Lefevre That gives us 17 possibilities. We have enough money to evaluate all but one player this month. |

August 2009 (Recruiting)
We get some information back on 16 of our 17 targets. SG Mauricio Duran is the best of the bunch, a JuCo two-guard for Texas CC who put up 31.2 ppg on 58.4% shooting from the floor (including 48.6% from beyond the arc). He's already a spectacular shooter, but that's about all he can do. His passing looks to be subpar, and his defense is atrocious. Still, his offensive skillset is enough to make him the #145 ranked recruit in the nation. We're at the top of his list currently with Oklahoma right behind. PF Kenneth Grigsby has the potential to be a scoring threat from the perimeter or the paint. His defense and rebounding seem average, and his handling skills appear below average. He averaged 15.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg for S.A. Madison HS this year. We're 4th on his list behind Texas State, Houston, and SMU. PG Tobias Lancaster seems to have average-to-above average potential when it comes to perimeter shooting, passing, and ballhandling. He's pretty raw at this point, but he could be a very good contributor to our squad. Lancaster averaged 23.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, and 3.4 apg for S.A. Lee HS. We're the only school on his list currently, so we could probably snatch him up early if we decide to pull the trigger. PF Billy Huang appears to be horrible at defending anything, rebounding anything, or blocking anything. He can't pass to save his life, but he does seem able to catch a ball and put it in the basket if he's standing underneath it. Less-than-impressive numbers at S.A. East Central HS...6.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg. We're tops on his preference list. SF Dong Fries appears to be a decent defender capable of grabbing some rebounds, but he's not much of a scorer. He averaged 11.8 ppg and 9.0 rpg for NB Canyon HS. We're 3rd on his list behind Texas State and Prairie View A&M. SF Kuno Pobel is extremely raw across the board and would need some considerable work, but he appears to have some potential for development into a solid perimeter shooter with good passing skills and great post defense. He averaged 16.7 ppg for his squad in Germany. We're the only school he's looking at. Out of the 1-star players we evaluated, SF Jay Ruggiero looks to have the most potential upside with SF Jason Randell and SG Carl Lefevre close behind. Code:
----- I authorize the addition of three additional players to our call list, a trio of 3-star point guards who have expressed at least some interest in our program. Along with these three, we will be evaluating the final 1-star guy from our original group of targets. I then decide to make a visit to Mauricio Duran's home to make a scholarship offer in person. We're currently tops on his preference list, with Oklahoma right behind, so I feel that we can't afford to wait. Hopefully, the Sooners will set their sites on a higher-rated prospect and forget about Duran. Assistant Coach Rios will be heading down the street to pay a visit to Tobias Lancaster. No scholarship yet as I want to get a feel for some of the other point guards we're taking a look at. Our big expense for the month will be the $3,500 it takes to fly one our assistants to Germany to meet with Kuno Pobel and his family. With a little over $1,000 remaining for the month, I authorize a roadtrip for an assistant to pay a visit to Jay Ruggiero and his parents. |

September 2009 (Recruiting)
First, let's take a look at Mauricio Duran (since that's where I went this month). Whew! We're still the top school on his list, and Oklahoma has fallen two spots to #4. The Sooners haven't offered a scholarship yet. UT-Arlington and North Texas rank behind us, and both programs have also extended offers. They're marginally more prestigious than us, so it'll be close. My assistant pulls through with Tobias Lancaster. We're still the only program on his radar. The same is true with Kuno Pobel and Jay Ruggiero. There's some good news regarding the trio of 3-star point guards we evaluated this month...two of them are very highly interested in coming to play for UTSA. PG Jerome Sprague looks to be an expert passer and perimeter defender, with average talent in all other areas. He's exactly the type of floor general I want leading our squad...a pass-first kind of guy with speed and the ability to hit open shots. Sprague averaged 8.9 ppg, 9.4 apg, and 4.9 rpg alongside Mauricio Duran at Texas CC. PG Timothy Meza isn't quite as talented as Sprague when it comes to ballhandling and passing, but he is definitely a bigger scoring threat capable of lighting it up from three-point territory. He posted 12.8 ppg and 4.3 apg for La Grange HS. We're the only school he is looking at right now. Code:
I will be making a return visit to Texas CC this month, this time to see PG Jerome Sprague and extend a scholarship offer to the 6'1" guard. We offer a campus visit to SG Mauricio Duran, hoping to solidify our spot as his top choice. Just in case Sprague doesn't work out, I decide to have my assistants pay a visit to PG Timothy Meza. We offer a campus visit to PG Tobias Lancaster. (With all the emphasis we're putting on landing a good PG, it'll be disastrous if we strike out on all three of our primary targets.) I remove Dong Fries from our call list and replace him with an equally unlikely longshot...3-star power forward Sylvester Bagwell from Dayton HS in Texas. He averaged 17.3 ppg and 6.4 rpg last season and apparently hasn't declared any schools of interest to date. We'll be putting together an evaluation of Bagwell this month. With an extra $2,500 to spend, I authorize devoting $2,000 of that amount towards bringing SF Jay Ruggiero in for a campus visit. |

October 2009 (Recruiting)
Ugh! UT-Arlington extended an offer to PG Mauricio Duran and they're now in the driver's seat with us right behind. At least Oklahoma and all other schools have dropped off of his preference list. We're still the only program in the picture when it comes to PG Jerome Sprague, PG Timothy Meza, PG Tobias Lancaster, and SF Kuno Pobel. We're still the top choice for SF Jay Ruggiero, but three other schools have entered the picture vying for his services. Luckily for us, only Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is of comparable prestige. Bad news on the PF Sylvester Bagwell front...we're not on his Top 5 list, and LSU has already extended a scholarship offer. I guess I wasn't the only one who noticed him. Code:
We currently have two scholarship offers on the table. I'm hopeful with respect to Sprague but a little discouraged with the Duran situation. We'll make a play to try to improve our prospects with Duran, but if the dynamics of the situation don't change by next month, I'll probably have to pull back our offer. I decide to pay another personal visit to Duran. We will also offer campus visits Sprague and Meza. My assistants will be visiting PG Tobias Lancaster, PF Kenneth Grigsby, and PG Andrew Valentin. We are not going to extend our last scholarship offer quite yet. November should be an interesting month as recruits will finally be able to declare their intentions. |

November 2009 (Recruiting)
Well...we haven't heard back from Sprague or Duran yet. Five of the players we've contacted at some point this year have committed thus far. Of note, PG Andrew Valentin has chosen Northern Arizona, and PF Sylvester Bagwell will be attending LSU. Our call list now stands at 16 players. Code:
----- We're still on top for Meza and Lancaster, but we have a lot more competition now. Oral Roberts, Baylor, Indiana State, and Belmont are interested in Meza...all four programs are considerably more prestigious than us. Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Texas-Arlington, and Tulane are interested in Lancaster. We haven't been able to make any headway with Duran. I hold off on the temptation to revoke his scholarship offer. He's just too talented to give up on. I decide to extend our final scholarship offer to PG Timothy Meza and will do so in person. Nobody else has made an offer to him, so I'm hoping that we can get the jump on all of those other high prestige schools. We add two more names to our call list...PG Albert Malik and PF David Thomas, a pair of 2-star players from Texas who apparently have an interest in us. We will evaluate them this month. I will also make personal visits to Sprague and Duran. Our assistants will hit Ruggiero, Lancaster, and list-newcomer David Thomas. Last edited by fpres : 10-12-2010 at 08:48 PM. |

Good luck in the Southland Conference! I started out there with Northwestern State, but I've sinced moved them on to the Big-12 with limited conference movement. I still have fond memories of my clashes with SE Louisiana.

Thanks for the encouragement! Congratulations on moving Northwestern State to the Big 12. How have things gone for them since the move? Quote:
As a big fan of FBCB, I'd definitely follow another dynasty if you decide to start up a new one. I'm hoping to have more time soon to get this one going. I want to see what my Roadrunners are capable of. |

Pretty well! 3 national championships, though they all came while I was in Conference USA. I'm halfway through my 3rd season in the Big 12, and currently 15-1, prestige is at 100. I should note that I started this career a long time ago in the original version of the game, which was significantly easier IMO (read: steals/hands exploit).
