Yay Ralph! Yay Tim! Tim sure shut me up. I was THIS close to putting him back in the minors yet again. He finally got his chance and proved himself!

Woooo! I signed 7 people to minor league contracts! At last the game thinks I am as good as ekcut. I R humbled.
LOL and JUST last week I was saying I was going to stop buying A's and B's so that I could get draft picks. So much for that theory. Guess I can't tank after all. Gotta win! Not as many A ratings this year. Kinda like seeing that. |

Hmmmm I've been trying to wrap my brains around how the AI works when you hit the "Ask Coach for Staff" button for pitchers. I have 6 pitchers that are "Ready for the majors" this year so I brought them up for spring training, plus I just bought a bunch of MRs in FA. And Pretty much the bench coach went mostly with the FA guys, pretty much none of the rookies. This makes me wonder if its decisions of who plays and the rankings are based on the most recent year's major league stats as a pitcher. It definitely has nothing to do with the star rating...as currently I have a 4 1/2 rating MR that the bench coach is benching totally.
actually looking again I'm definitely thinking VORP stats play a large part. Last edited by CrimsonFox : 05-28-2011 at 01:06 PM. |

Its 60% ratings, 40% stats. The stats are broken down further by the AI between current year, past year and 2 years ago with a very strong favor placed on current year stats. |

I just remembered there's a setting for "Favor Rookies/Favor Veterans". I wonder if that matters too or if that is just for the AI DURING the games.

BTW, this ended up totally not being the case at all. Did not work. I do think sometimes that the computer knows more about the players than its telling. LIke it has ratings for pitchers, but it secret knows which players are bad despite ratings. MOre often than not when I listen to the bench coach and ignore the ratings, I do better than when I ignore the AI and look at ratings. Granted there are some obvious things I wouldn't do like this year it wants to use a guy that gives up a lot of hits as the closer. WRONG... |

Maybe the AI just looks at the ratings differently is all. A few years ago, I remember posting up some thoughts about ratings in this league and how what you see is actually deceptive. Just because someone is a 4 star player, it doesn't necessarily mean they are going to be a better player in every situation than a player that is 3 star. Because of the way Overall rating is measured, a player could be heavily weighted because of some particular ratings that I might personally not find any interest in at all depending on the system that I run.
I am not sure that you necessarily do this, but you mentioned a 4 1/2 rated MR up above. I rarely actually looked at the OVR when I used to play ootp regularly. I would be far more interested in analyzing the ratings at an individual level. What type of stuff, control and movement does he have? How many pitches and how much stamina does he have? If he only has 2 pitches, is he an explosive strikeout pitcher that likely won't walk a bunch? If so, then it might not be a huge deal with only 2 pitches. If the pitcher with 2 pitches is more likely to be a junk ball pitcher, he might get lit up further into the game that he goes. I guess my point is that I used to make a habit out of looking for good deals out there that had low overall ratings but the key ratings that I needed to make my system work well. Just a thought! |

Another classic Alan post. He is a wise wise OOTPer. I'd say a wise wise man but the fact remains he keeps dealing with us on a day to day basis so he loses a little creditability.
