Bids for Green Mountain College Campus Will Start at $3M – NECN

Quote:
Are you in the market for an indoor swimming pool? What about a library or a 400-seat theater? Perhaps 33 classrooms? Or maybe a piece of property that has all of these, and a carbon-neutral heating system as a bonus?

That's what's on offer in the auction of Green Mountain College's campus in Vermont, with the bidding starting at $3 million.

The defunct liberal arts college and its 155 acres will go to auction on August 18 at 1 p.m., according to a news release from Maltz Auctions. The property was appraised in 2016 at $20 million.

Green Mountain College announced the closure in January 2019, saying the campus and its operations were no longer financially viable. The nearly 200-year-old private college in Poultney was known for programs in environmental and social sustainability.

I went to college in northernmost New York State, and I'm pretty sure even I have not heard of that college. But by all means lets start FOFC University

A Facebook post I saw about this had a comment to the effect of "Sounds like the opening act of a wacky comedy movie"

I think we have a thread somewhere on FOFC here with a list of potential teachers.

They should really drive male enrollment.

And cannabis is legal. We can do something here like agricultural studies focused on weed.

And Bernie is from there so I'm sure we can get him an easy adjunct position and we'll get his bros & sis.

I grew up in Vermont and I definitely heard the name, but couldn't have told you much about it.

Similar. I'm just on the other side of the river in NH, it's probably about an hour or so away. Don't know anyone who's ever attended, or otherwise stepped foot on the property.

Hold out. With the doomsday coming this year for small colleges prices will continue to decrease.

Before we get too excited, let's run the nos.

1) Assume $3M is the winning bid
2) Assume there are 150 FOFC posters that will contribute
3) $3M / 150 = $20K outlay/loan each

I'm guessing it could go to $6M or $9M easy so would be $40K or $60K each.

Is this doable team?

I'm telling you, by the end of the school year places will be begging someone to take the campus just to pay the taxes. COVID is going to lay waste to higher ed.

I actually know that college! Went there for lacrosse camp 3-4 years. Stunningly beautiful campus (in the summer), modern enough campus facilities from what I saw (this would've been late 90's/early 00's). I know New England is saturated with D2/3/smaller liberal arts schools, but it always seemed like that one could've made it but it was being run under some hippie-type mandate instead of just being a small college in a beautiful location.

Must be depressing when your alma mater closes down. That happened to my father, who went to Upsala in East Orange New Jersey and played basketball there. He's still friends with some of his fraternity brothers, about 60 years later.

Nice one! Are you in the same business?

Re-certification is coming up next year so need to make sure I have all I need from taking company's LMS ... I do not want to retake the exam.

Systems analyst but I deal with a lot of projects so I considered getting one for a while and I've cracked the PMBOK a few times.

Then we had a kid, so, for the last few years, I've had a new project that takes roughly 110% of my time

I've kicked around getting a CAPM just to do the "hey, I've looked at this and have a minor cert in it". It's not useful if you want to be a PM, but it wouldn't be the worst thing to look like an IT guy who can also handle projects.

PMP is pretty much a requirement for me. It started getting really serious back in the 00's and got mine in 2007/8.

It's obviously worth it to me. It couldn't do anything but to help you so I would encourage you to take it (PMP looks good after your name on a business card). I wouldn't try study from PMBOK directly (way to dry and boring) ... back then the third-party study materials were horrendous but I am sure they are much better now.

I found another one! This one's a damn bargain, I tells you!

It's a British Sea Fort and it only costs 50K. The location isn't bad.

Sure, it requires some spit shine, but what property doesn't. Yes, it requires public boat access. And, yes, it's going to require some pretty crazy refurbishment. But you could totally turn this into some crazy Airbnb or something. Or just live there and wait for civilization to collapse.

No fresh water source. It'll be a deathtrap.

But if a desalinator is included and can ship over a lot of planting soil, pretty good for the zombie apocalypse. I'll toss in $1K

Will we have enough guns to go around? Daryl notwithstanding, crossbows really are very inefficient against zombies. Do you guys need me to bring my stockpile?
