Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys, A TCY dynasty

2003

Despite the cries of the media and the fans, the NCAA refused to institute a playoff system for years. The BCS started choosing the national championship game in 1998, with Tennessee defeating Florida State for the championship. The BCS proved to have flaws in 2001, when Nebraska was chosen to play in the national championship against Miami, Florida. Nebraska had lost their previous game, the conference championship, to Colorado. Nebraska was then embarrassed by the Hurricanes.

The wheels came off the bus in 2003, however, when no team went undefeated. The BCS eventually chose LSU to play Oklahoma. Oklahoma suffered from the same fate as Nebraska. The Sooners were run over by the Kansas State Wildcats in the conference championship. Like the Cornhuskers, Oklahoma also lost the national championship game.

The problem came when USC defeated Michigan in the Rose Bowl. USC and LSU each finished with one loss (so did Miami OH and Boise State, but that’s largely forgotten as is Tulane’s undefeated 1998 season). LSU, winning the BCS championship game, was the "national champion", but that didn’t stop USC from announcing that the Trojans had won at least a share of the national championship.

Before high school student athletes could sign their letters of intent in February of 2004, the discussion for a playoff in Division 1 college football was well underway. By March, two major decisions were reached and granted by the NCAA, one of which was more surprising than a major college football playoff.

Division 1 college football powerhouse teams normally schedule one or two cupcake teams a season. This division 1-AA (or worse) school is usually given a larger payoff than they could ever hope for during their own regular season home games. In return, the school travels to the powerhouse’s home field and gets beaten to a pulp.

This practice took center-stage when the schedules for LSU and USC were scrutinized. LSU’s schedule was helped by a 35-7 thumping of Western Illinois. Every USC opponent was in Division 1. NCAA officials were forced to answer tough questions about scheduling.

The NCAA’s response was swift. Effective immediately, division 1 schools would only be allowed to play other division 1 schools.

Georgia and Kansas State were at the forefront of schools unhappy with the ruling. Both teams had agreements with division 1-AA schools for the 2004 season. The NCAA had an answer. It was interesting and controversial.

The NCAA would bring in 8 schools to not only join the NCAA division 1, but to form a new conference, the Solecismic 8 (SOL 8. Years later it would be revealed that the term “Solecismic” was nothing but a play on the word “solecistic”, created by one of the panel members, a Jimi Grindin). The decision bypassed previous standards that determined if a school was division 1 or 1-AA. A panel of NCAA officials were given a week to choose which schools would form the new conference.

ACC, Big East, and SEC schools were interested in having the SOL 8 along the southeast coast. Georgia’s athletic director led a big push to put the SOL 8 in Georgia and Florida. Meanwhile, the PAC-10 and other western based conferences saw more appeal for a California based SOL 8. Big 12 and Big 10 officials were adamant about placing the SOL 8 in either Texas or the Ohio Valley.

After the week deadline, the panel revealed their decision. After weighing the requests of the conferences (and the few remaining independent schools), an answer was given that surprisingly made no one happy.

The SOL 8 would be split between Arkansas and Missouri. Four teams would come out of each state. Schools initially selected from Missouri were Southeast Missouri (SEMO), Southern Missouri, Missouri State, and Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). The Arkansas schools were Arkansas Tech, Southern Arkansas, Little Rock University, and Central Arkansas.

The decision came as a surprise to everyone and problems quickly arose. Among the biggest eyesores was the fact UMKC didn’t have a football team. UMKC had a deal in place to upgrade their facilities and were prepared to field a team. Still, which is worse? Playing a Division 1-AA school or a Division 1 school that has no experience whatsoever?

The fallout of the UMKC deal led to the NCAA pulling out of the other three Missouri schools as well. With the NCAA’s tail between their legs and time running out (it was nearing May already), four more universities were needed.

Arkansas governor Dennis Thomas, anxious to close the deal and keep the SOL 8 in his home state, provided a plan. Thomas proposed that the other four schools come from Arkansas as well. He suggested including Volmert State, Mayes University, Northwestern State, and Arkansas A&M.

The Thomas Plan was heavily criticized as well, particularly by the other southern states hoping to land a school or two of their own in the SOL 8. However, no other solid suggestions came forth, and at least all 8 Arkansas universities had played football the year before. The Thomas Plan was quickly accepted in order to allow universities to begin making concrete schedules for the upcoming season.

With the other four schools accepted into division 1 football, the SOL 8 was finally official.

Volmert State Bulldogs out of Texarkana.

Little Rock University Trojans.

Southern Arkansas Muleriders, El Dorado.

Central Arkansas Bears, Conway.

Mayes University Golden Lions, Pine Bluff.

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys, Blytheville.

Northwestern State Lions, Fort Smith.

Arkansas A&M Boll Weevils, Hot Springs.

The second major decision was to go to a playoff system. Announced at the same time as the creation of the SOL 8, it was met with praise and criticism. However, interest in the playoff controversy quickly died out when the UMKC deal unraveled.

For years, media and fans alike had come up with playoff systems for the NCAA. Brackets for 4, 8, 16, and even 32 teams were widely available on the internet. Surprisingly, the NCAA adopted a 24 team bracket. The NCAA offered the 8 major conference champions and an independent team a first round bye for the playoffs.

All conference champions, major and minor, were guaranteed a berth in the playoff, as well as an “independent” champion. The independent champion clause quickly became known as the “Notre Dame Clause.” The SOL 8 was therefore guaranteed an annual representative in the playoffs. A bowl committee would determine the remaining open slots for the bracket.

A few other minor decisions were made as well. Perhaps the most significant of these was the decision to limit all division 1 universities to 16 scholarships per year. Major universities were opposed to the scholarship limit, but the move was generally accepted very well.

Arkansas Tech Coach Resigns Due to Health Concerns

ATU head coach Chad Horner resigned yesterday citing health concerns. The 58-year old's health has declined in the past few months and he has suffered from heart problems over the past few years. Horner's health conditions never caused him to be apart from the Wonder Boy football team.

To replace Horner, Arkansas Tech has chosen offensive coordinator Ardent Enthusiast on an interim basis. Coach AE's offense set team records for total points and total yards last season as the team went 9-2 before losing in the first round of the playoffs.

Horner and Enthusiast were unavailable for comment.

Football Season Ticket Prices to Remain the Same For 2004

Fourth Consecutive Year Without Season Ticket Price Increase
The Arkansas Tech Athletics Department announced today that football season ticket prices will remain at $15 per game for the 2004 season. The 2004 season will mark the fourth consecutive year without an increase in season ticket prices.

"Although the cost of tuition for student-athletes, health insurance and other operational costs have continued to rise for the athletic department, we have worked to make cuts in other areas to avoid raising season ticket prices for 2004," said athletic director Joe "DataHawk" Secora.

Secora also announced that individual game ticket prices would not increase. Currently, end zone tickets are $11, upper deck seats are $14. Alumni and premium seating sections are $15 and the student section is $10 (must present student ID). The 18 luxury boxes continue to cost $900 each.

Arkansas Tech Joins 7 Other Regional Teams to Form New Solecismic 8 Conference; NCAA 1-A Football

Arkansas Tech University athletic director Joe "DataHawk" Secora announced today that the university football team would join the newly formed Solecismic 8 Conference.

The Solecismic 8, or SOL 8, was formed to ensure all division 1-A football teams played other division 1-A schools. Eight universities were chosen from Arkansas and Missouri. Schools selected from Missouri were Southeast Missouri (SEMO), Southern Missouri, Missouri State, and Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). The Arkansas schools were Arkansas Tech, Southern Arkansas, Little Rock University, and Central Arkansas.

Secora stated that the NCAA would assist Arkansas Tech and the other universities in scheduling both conference and non-conference games for the 2004 season. The 2005 conference scheduled will be provided by the conference after officials are selected.

The Gulf South Conference was provided a lucrative package to allow Arkansas Tech to have a seamless transition from the GSC to the SOL 8.

2004 Arkansas Tech Football Outlook

Wonder Boys Open 2004 Campaign vs. Western Michigan
Arkansas Tech had an incredible season last year, a season highlighted by a conference championship in the Gulf South Conference and a berth in the NCAA 1-AA playoffs.

The Wonder Boys high powered offense experienced a roller-coaster ride that took them from glorious victories to a crash landing at the end of the season in the playoffs.

This season will prove to be a challenge as the Wonder Boys move from 1-AA and the Gulf South Conference to 1-A football. Don't expect the same success as in the past, at least not right away.

Going into 2004, there are more questions about Arkansas Tech football than interim head coach Ardent Enthusiast has answers. At least at this stage. Spring drills and summer workouts will clarify most issues. When AE prepares to start fall practice, he expects to zero in on the remaining problems and have his team ready to charge out of the gate at Western Michigan.

If all goes according to script, Western Michigan will be shocked and become ATU's first victim as the Wonder Boys begin play in 1-A football. Things sometimes have a way of not following the script, however, and AE knows ATU's situation might require creative coaching.

But the young coach, 33, has a record of making something out of nothing on offense. He looks to do the same as he pilots ATU this season.

Losing two quarterbacks to graduation and one to academic eligibility is normally a great concern. An even greater concern is that only one scholarship quarterback is on the roster heading into spring practice.

Starting linebacker Rob Nielsen will also be missed. The four time first team GSC selection has high hopes to be selected in the next NFL draft. If he is, he will be the first Arkansas Tech player to be selected since ATU Hall of Famer Rick Gage was selected in the 16th round of the 1976 NFL draft. The last ATU alum to play in the NFL was cornerback Irvin Phillips, who spent two years in the league. Former Wonder Boy Wide receiver Ronnie Powell played for Cleveland in 1999, but graduated from Northwestern Louisiana. Linebacker Trent Lynch hopes to follow in Nielsen's footsteps.

Those two problems merely scratch the surface, but AE and his staff are prepared for the challenge, knowing what's required of them in the ever-changing world of college football.

Offense
Losing three quarterbacks from last season's team will be devastating as ATU makes the jump to big time football. From the reserves, from redshirt ranks and from the frosh roster, AE will comb through the candidates until he picks the one who can best handle signal-calling duties going into the season opener.
If you need proof of how wide-open the situation is, a look at the candidates' stats will disabuse you of the notion that any of the quarterbacks-in-waiting is amply prepared to take over. Lamont Pearson, who has all of 22 passes in his career, is the closest thing to a graybeard among the candidates. The redshirt junior was third string last season, throwing a total of eight passes, five for completions.
How bad is it? Freshman ranks will yield other candidates. The #2 quarterback will likely be a battle between true freshmen Jesse Malone and Lester Gress.

A late-season injury slowed Ray Best, but the 196-pound senior should be primed this fall for his best season. Arkansas Tech had never had a back put together back-to-back years as the team's rushing leader until Best accomplished it the last two seasons. Senior Drew Hudson stepped in while Best was injured last season, with junior Ross Chittwood looking for playing time as well. Be on the lookout next season for a pair of running backs transferring in. Dwight Barrett (Springdale, University of Arkansas) and Darren Springer (Greenland, Arkansas State) were fullbacks at their previous schools and transferred to ATU after the Wonder Boys moved to 1-A football.

At fullback, junior Jim Frederickson is a two-year starter with a penchant for blowing up linebackers and catching the ball out of the backfield. He's backed up by fellow junior Skip Gillespie. Incoming signees could be in the mix for more immediate playing time because of the lack of depth, making preseason drills a cause for concern.

The changing nature of football couldn't be more apparent than by scanning the names at wide receiver, a position that was a decided team strength last season is now a weakness after losing both starters and the main backup to graduation. Seniors Scottie Baerg, Carlton Caldwell, and Nate Matthews will have to pick up the slack. Baerg and Caldwell have both shown flashes for making the big play in limited action, while Matthews has demonstrated he can be a capable possession receiver. Reshirt junior Geoff Mitchell will look to gain valuable experience as the fourth man.

Lewis Garrick is the lone returning player at tight end, where his 231 pounds and 6-3 frame qualify him as a receiver first and a blocker second. The hard-charging senior had only one catch last season. With no other scholarship players returning, ATu looks again to the freshman and walk on ranks to fill out it's roster. The #2 tight end will likely be freshman signee Andre Battle.

Arkansas Tech coaches hope the decline in sacks allowed by the offensive line, a problem two years ago, will continue unabated. The most significant player on the offensive line is at center, where redshirt junior Tracy Levesque is a two year starter. Levesque has been consistent and dependable. Rich Manion, a redshirt soph, will be his backup.

Senior Gabe Granberry and junior Glenn Walters will be fixtures at tackle, constituting an intimidating force. Both players started every game last season. Redshirt soph Lamont Renze is the top reserve.

As good as the tackles are, the guards may be better. Redshirt junior Quinn Hampton and junior Vinny Sawyer are road graders who excel at trap blocking. considered probable winners in the scrap to determine who opens at guard. Edgar Monaco, another junior, is a very capable backup.

Defense

Arkansas Tech's advance to the playoffs last season owed a huge debt to defensive heroics most readily highlighted by key plays by the departed middle linebacker Rob Nielsen. So, entering 2004, the question becomes: If they face similar circumstances this fall, will the Wonder Boys have the wherewithal to withstand a threat that in one play can mean the difference between winning and losing?

The opening proposition is none too promising. Most disturbing is the loss of seven regulars from a unit that surged in the second half of the season.

Winfred DeVito and Isaac Hedges are two seniors looking to finally cause problems on the field at the defensive end position. DeVito has been a pass rushing specialist in the past, while Hedges is more of a run stuffer. Both will play key roles in the Wonder Boy defense that is switching to the 50. Junior Jamal McCarthy is the first end off the bench.

The switch from the 4-3 to the 50 means one less defensive tackle will be needed on the field. Redshirt junior Glenn Bauders looks to man the nose tackle. Though he is considered undersized at 260 pounds, he is lightning quick. Fellow redshirt junior Jimmy Spry and redshirt freshman TJ Ruby will fight for playing time should Bauders tire.

Two of the returning starters on the ATU defense are at linebacker, but the position is still cause for concern. Senior outside linebackers Claude Garcia and Sammie Koopmans are coverage type linebackers who excelled in the 4-3. The switch to the 50 defense will require both to step up their run defense and pass rushing skills. Sophomore Nick Jeffcoat, who appeared in 6 games last season as a true freshman, will be the first outside backer in the game.

Inside linebackers will also play an important role. ATU must not only make up for the departure of Nielsen, but provide another inside backer as well. Senior Trent Lynch is no slouch. Playing behind Nielsen, Lynch worked special teams and was the first backer, outside or in the middle, off the bench the past two years. He's an excellent run defender and will serve as defensive captain. Junior Bart Graham looks to lock up the other inside spot, though that's hardly secure. Redshirt freshman Matt Lang surprised many in practices last year and looks to be a capable backup. ATU will look to walk ons and freshmen to fill the depth chart.

The other two remaining starters are at corner. Juniors Irving Swift and Raymond Hudson both excel in man to man coverage, with Swift leading the team in interceptions with 5 last season. Junior Perry Hardin, all 5-8 and 164 pounds, looks to be the nickel back. Sophomore Terry Frederickson, who is actually lighter than Hardin, may be the dime back or may redshirt. If he redshirts, look for a freshman or walk on to serve as the dime.

Anybody with raw natural ability and willing to bring it to bear should apply for employment in the defensive backfield where graduation removed both starting safeties. Seniors Neal Jamison and Leon Jagger look to fill the holes, though neither has started a game. Jamison is better known for his special teams tackles on the kickoff team. Jagger found a home playing as a run stuffer on the goal line package last season. Redshirt freshman Casey Fleming is the top reserve. Like Lang, Fleming was a walk on last season who showed promise. Once again, to fill the depth chart ATU will look to the freshman class and walk ons.

Special Teams
While questions and doubts hover over the 2004 Wonder Boy offense and defense, at least until the season opener clarifies a few things, no such uncertainty befuddles an assessment of the kicking game. The reason: senior punter RJ Burgess and sophomore placekicker Andy Fredrickson. Not that funny things can't happen anytime in the kicking game. But Burgess and Fredrickson are about the closest thing to money in the bank the Vols boast.
Burgess averaged 43 yards per punt with 18 punts inside the 20. Fredrickson was even more impressive. Last year he connected on 17 of 24 field goals, including 12 of his last 14. From 40 yards out or more, Fredrickson was seven of 10. He was perfect on all 41 extra point kicks.

The kick return department doesn't show the stability by Burgess and Fredrickson. AE wants more production. Best, a senior, averaged only 20.4 yards, bringing back 19 kickoffs. The two top punt returners used up their eligibility. Best, Swift, and Matthews will probably have a shot at hauling back punts.

Wonder Boys Open Spring Practice Today; Coach Enthusiast Addresses Media

Green and Gold Game Concludes Spring Drills April 17

Arkansas Tech begins spring drills this afternoon under sunny skies at Polston Field. Before hitting the field, head coach Ardent Enthusiast addressed the media to preview this spring. Enthusiast, who is entering his 5th season as member of the ATU coaching staff, said there are a lot of opportunities this spring because of the Wonder Boys' heavy graduation losses.

"Spring practice is always a very exciting time. This team seems to have a lot of energy and focus and a lot to like about it as we go into spring practice. This is Phase 2 of building a football team. Phase 1 was our lifting in the offseason. I think the off-season went really well and our goal is the same as it is every year: to build a team that can compete for the conference and the championship.

"There are a lot of opportunities on this team because of our graduation losses, a lot of the guys who played a lot of football for us over a period of time. When you start trying to replace seven starters on defense, that's a tall order, but the real plus seems to be this team's attitude and work ethic.

"I like where we are to this point. We've got an excellent stable of running backs. Our offensive line is outstanding. They're the leaders of this football team. There's no question about their ability. As it was last year, this will be a very physical spring for us. We have talked about it as a staff and as a team. We're going to work all the time that's legally given us by the rules. We're going to work like heck to make every minute we're on the field productive.

"There are a number of new faces, which will be a real positive for us. We did not sign junior college players, even after the move to division 1 football.

"There are a number of redshirt guys that this is really a crucial spring for them to get off on the right foot for their second year. I'm hopeful we'll get some good play from all of those guys and, in the case of a couple of them, guys who could even impact our program considerably. They need to find a place this spring where they're going to help.

"There's a good group of who have walked on who look like they have a chance to put themselves in a position to help in some way. I'm anxious to see where those guys are. They definitely have a chance to help the team. Our program will need the walk ons to contribute immediately.

"We're going in with a group that's pretty healthy. That's pleasing. Attitude, effort, understanding, communication and execution are the areas where we're going to work hard to improve. We need guys who are going to be able to make plays for us. We're fortunate to have a lot of guys who have played a lot of football for us. We've played a number of kids over the year and feel good about having a number of guys who have played.

"The biggest question is replacing the quarterback I'm sure that will continue to get lots of attention as we go through the spring, as it should when you start replacing a three-year starter. I expect our quarterback, whoever it turns out to be, to be able to mange the offense, understand the system, and use the system to help his team win. Fundamentally, he needs to be an good player, not outstanding. He needs to be an outstanding player from a fundamental standpoint. He needs to be a guy who, at the end of the spring, you need to be able to say this guy has great timing from what he's trying to get done with the offense. Ball security is an absolute must as is avoiding any negative plays, like missed assignments. Whether he's doing it with his mind, arm or legs, we need a guy with the poise to help our team win. That's what we're looking for.

"Lamont Pearson will start off as the quarterback to beat out. He doesn't have much competition this spring, but our walk ons will get a look. Our freshmen will get every opportunity during the summer to get their looks as we go along. They'll be graded daily, by period in many instances, and we're going to find that first guy by the end of spring practice.

"Safety is obviously a huge concern as we graduated both starters.

"That said, I will go ahead and reveal a change in our offense. As you well know, our offense has been very wide open in the past. We took advantage of great quarterbacks and receivers. Unfortunately, this season we won't have the same capability. We have a great set of backs and we're hoping to utilize them instead.

"Our program was more than capable to win the Gulf South Conference and to compete in the playoffs. While we're excited to make the jump to Division 1, we know we're going to be outmanned by the larger schools and mismatched physically as well. Things that worked well in the Gulf South Conference won't work well in the Solecismic Eight.

"If we're going to compete, we're going to have to simplify and work our butts off using angle blocks. We can't help being outmanned. We can't help that other teams are going to be stronger, at least not now. We're going to compete because we're going to play smarter. We're going to play outstanding assignment, mistake-free football.

"We're going to try and feature Ray Best and run the double wing offense. It's an offense I'm familiar with from my time as a coordinator in California. It will allow us to simplify, to play smart assignment football, and make fewer mistakes along the way. It plays to our strengths as well, the running backs and our offensive line.

"The attitude of our players has been positive. I like the energy around us right now. We have our goals set very high and, as always, expectations for Arkansas Tech football are very high. I cannot wait to get started. It's been a long and interesting off-season. I never expected to be in front of you today, as Arkansas Tech's head coach or as head coach of a Division 1-A school.

Question & Answers With Coach Ardent:

Coach, the double wing? Isn't that a high school offense?

"Actually, I learned about it at the junior high level, but there are a number of colleges beginning to use double wing principles in their offense. Just like the bunch principles that were in vogue a few seasons ago, coaches like to take things from offenses and try to mix it into their own. We're going to start with the double wing. If we can get some special players at the quarterback and receiver positions, we can always try to do the same. We'll continue to use the receivers, just not as often as we have in the past."

Are you concerned about offensive leadership with several guys missing from last year's squad?

"Well, really our whole team is a concern. We don't have a lot of seniors on our team. But we do have a group of younger guys who are juniors and sophomores that can be leaders. I think our seniors will step up, but I also think we have a team of good characters throughout."

How is Ray Best's ankle progressing?

"We'll have to see. He hasn't done anything full speed since we sat him at the end of last season. He did go through our offseason program. Right now, more than his ankle, he's got a little tweak in his hamstring. I think he'll be fine. Typically, with a ankle injury like that, it takes time off to recouperate. He's had that. He'll be ready for the season opener."

Coach, defensively you're replacing a whole lot of key players. Who do you see stepping up?

"Well, we expect our returning starters to play like the veterans they are. They're the cornerstones. I believe ends Winfred DeVito and Isaac Hedges will be special. They're both very good. In fact, we're moving to the 50 defense to try and take advantage of their abilities. Linebacker Trent Lynch has spent the past three years trying to get on the field at linebacker, safety, anywhere to play. We're really excited to have him in the middle.

Wonder Boys Prepare For Saturday Scrimmage

First Major Scrimmage of Spring Set For Cyclone Stadium

Head coach Ardent Enthusiast left the practice field Friday evening anxiously looking forward to the Arkansas Tech football team's first major spring scrimmage Saturday.

"We tried to gear everything (Friday) towards the scrimmage and hopefully it will pay off," Enthusiast said.
The Wonder Boys will run 80-100 plays as Enthusiast and his staff begin sorting out contenders for lineup spots in the fall. Receiving the most scrutiny, as it has in the first five of the squad's 15 spring workouts, will be the Wonder Boys' safety competition.

"We'll run some of our old offense against the defense, once I've seen what our double wing offense can do. We want to see what the defense does against a normal offense as well."

Enthusiast gave the new signal caller, Lamont Pearson, a passing grade thus far.

"We've tried to scheme around and not make him do everything, but what we've asked him to do, he's done reasonably well," he said.

Much more will be learned by putting the Pearson in live action Saturday.

"We'll protect him as best we can, but he needs to play, get on the perimeter and run, to see how they manage it. We're not going to ask him to block, like most double wing teams. He's our only quarterback right now, we can't afford him to get a silly injury," Enthusiast said.

Friday's workout was highlighted by a deep-passing drill which tested not only Pearson, but players bidding for time at the open safety positions, which is drawing the most attention on defense.

"In one period, we really tried to force the football down the field to make sure our safeties got a good look," Enthusiast said. "I thought that was a great drill for both the offense and the defense. Pearson completed some deep balls, and that should give him some confidence, and the secondary got their hands on some balls, which was good to see."

Enthusiast said a full agenda remains for the final 10 spring workouts.
"We've had five beautiful days to practice and I like the spirit of the football team, but we've still got a long way to go at some positions," he said.

Defense Draws Slight Edge in Spring Scrimmage

Green and Gold Game Concludes Spring Drills April 17

Arkansas Tech held its first scrimmage of spring practice 2004 Saturday at sun-splashed Cyclone Stadium. Outstanding efforts came from players expected to do well as well as a surprise performer or two.

"I thought Trent Lynch was all over the place, head coach Ardent Enthusiast said. The defense was able to bow its neck and keep them out of the end zone until late. There were some big hits in the scrimmage, which you like to see."

At quarterback, Lamont Pearson completed 12 of 18 passes for 133 yards while running the double wing offense. The coaching staff did not keep records of his statistics when he ran other offenses.

Ray Best led Vol rushers with 49 yards on 9 carries.

Defensively, Lynch had five solo tackles while end Isaac Hedges had 3 tackles for loss (-7) and an assist.

"We can only do what we can do," Enthusiast said, "We won't go any faster than our new guys can go. And just like in baseball, you have to be strong up the middle. To me our biggest challenge right now is replacing the people we lost up the middle from last year, positions like quarterback, defensive tackle, and safety."

RJ Burgess averaged 42.2 yards on 8 punts with a long of 53.

Arkansas Tech resumes spring drills Tuesday.

Running Game Shows Progress in Scrimmage

Green & Gold Game/Fans' Day Concludes Spring Drills April 17

A pair of touchdown runs by Ray Best left head coach Ardent Enthusiast feeling better about the Arkansas Tech running game after a 50-play scrimmage Thursday at Cyclone Stadium. The senior tailback found the end zone on runs of 4 and 10 yards in a scrimmage that was largely controlled by the defense. The first and second units each ran 20 plays.

"The running game has picked up," Enthusiast said. "I thought Ray hit it really well and I thought that (tailback Drew) Hudson hit it really well. I didn't think Ross (Chitwood) had his best day running the ball, but he certainly made some good perimeter blocks out there on the sprint-out passes."

Lamont Pearson did toss a pair of short touchdown passes in the scrimmage.

The Wonder Boys made just one turnover, but it was a costly one as linebacker Claude Garcia scooped up a fumble and turned it into a 25-yard score. Garcia also teamed with linebacker Sammie Koopmans for a sack.

"I think there was good play on both sides," Enthusiast said. "It was good to see the defense continue to bow its neck and stop people down close (to the goal line). Obviously that's going to be a point of emphasis for us."

Kicking continues to be a strength. "We did have great kicking work today," Enthusiast said. "We looked at just about every punt rush you're going to see and ran a couple of fakes. I thought that was good."

After the scrimmage, Enthusiast sent the players home for Easter weekend. They'll reassemble for two practices next week, then wrap up the spring with the Green and Gold game on Saturday, April 17.

Garrick, Ruby Earn Spring Most Improved Honors

Wonder Boys Conclude Spring Drills in April 17 Green & Gold Game

A pair of players vying for playing time at key positions have earned the most improved player awards for Arkansas Tech's 2004 spring practice. TJ Ruby, a redshirt freshman, was named winner of the Francis Pilotte Award as most improved defensive performer. Lewis Garrick, a senior tight end, earned the Victor Rodriguez Award for most improved offensive player.
Ruby sat out last season as a redshirt but impressed the coaching staff with his quickness. Garrick played in every game in 2003 as the second tight end for the Wonder Boys.

"TJ has been really, really productive and we like the attitude he's taken to practice this spring," defensive coordinator Ben Lewis said. "The hard work's paid off for him and I think a lot of it has to do with him feeling comfortable in the position. (Ends coach Pierce) Matt's done a great job with all those kids at defensive tackle but TJ seems to have grown a lot more than most of our guys on defense."

Head coach Ardent Enthusiast feels Garrick is ready to contribute.

"Lewis obviously has had a good spring," Enthusiast said. "We were hoping he would come around and he's really exceeded what we expected. We thought he may be ready at the end of last season."

Both coaches added that the spring's most improved players usually make a noticeable impact come fall.

"That's pretty much the case," Enthusiast added with a smile. "But typically, it's somebody who is now performing at a level where you can count on them in the fall."

Lettermen For Learning Campaign Highlights Green and Gold Game

The Arkansas Tech football squad is teaming with Mississippi County Schools for the Lettermen for Learning Campaign.

This program is designed to motivate students to strive for academic achievement throughout the school year. Students who meet a certain criteria set by principals of each school are able to attend the Green & Gold Game at no charge. This is the third year for this program.

"We thought this would be a great opportunity to do something for the Blytheville community," said Frank DeBolt, ATU director of community relations.

Green and Gold Day is Saturday, with Fans Day activities taking place from 1-2 p.m. The students have the opportunity during this time to get autographs from their favorite student-athletes.

I also went back and edited post 15 when I realized that the NFL draft isn't held until April. I had previously determined Nielsen went undrafted.

Enthusiast Post-Spring Practice Questions & Answers

Wonder Boys Open 2004 Season vs. Western Michigan
On the Team's Chemistry Heading Into 2004
"I think the attitude and the chemistry is a process that is ongoing. We’ve certainly got a good number of willing guys to step up as leaders of the football team. As a coach, I feel there’s a significant amount of progress yet to be made. That’s going to take a conscious effort on our football team to close the gap between the guys who understand what it takes to be champions and win the Solecismic Eight and a few guys who are either new and inexperienced or others who just haven’t totally bought into the program as far as academics and those types of things that are distractions to the team. If we could get those guys to come around, then I think we could have a really positive year."

On the Process of Finding a Starting Quarterback
"At the beginning of spring practice, I thought it went better than expected. I thought Pearson did a great job managing the situations he was put in and the tempo of the offense. Then I think he took a step backward toward the end of spring. Of course, the defense had something to do with that, but he needed to get back on track and he did that toward the end."

On Spring Injuries
"Any time you have injuries or suspensions or any of those types of things it’s distracting. But we had to do the 11-on-11 contact because our quarterback needed it. If we had an experienced quarterback, we may have backed off some of the scrimmaging. Everybody wants to be physical but when you do that, you’re going to have the injuries. It’s my job to try to balance it as much as we can."

On Spring Practice's Pleasant Surprise
"I think a number of guys have made good progress. TJ Ruby is a guy who’s come out of the woodwork and really matured. Lewis Garrick certainly has and we have found a diamond, I think, in Dwight Barrett if he continues to make progress. He's ineligible this season, but I'm excited about what he'll provide on the practice field this year and what he means to the future of this program. I think Claude Garcia's had a awfully good spring."

On the Defensive Secondary
"There was a lot of concern surrounding our safeties coming into the spring. But when you have those kinds of situations, other people need to step up. Irving Swift is a tremendous leader for that group and they need to follow his lead as far as work ethic and preparation for practice or games. The rest of them, those guys have got to progress to the point where they can be counted on in the Solecismic Eight. Right now, we’re still looking for our starting safeties."

On the Wide Receivers
"Our three seniors are disappointed with the direction I've taken the offense, no doubt. They're just like most young men, young receivers. They want the ball in their hands, they want the ball thrown to them often. I think they understand, though, the reasoning behind our move to the running game. I'll say this, if we were still in the Gulf South, we'd still be throwing the ball. That said, we're still going to get them involved in special teams and we have a few packages in the double wing where we'll have a receiver or two in there."

On the Depth at Running Back
"We’ve don't got a lot of guys who all have played a lot but I’d still like to see someone who’s going to come out of the pack and be a difference maker. We have one in Ray Best, but I'd like to see someone else step up and be that other back. Right now Hudson and Chittwood are fighting for it, but neither is really standing out."

On the Linebackers
"I like our linebackers but I don't like our depth at linebacker. You’ve got some dynamics in that group that gives them a chance to be pretty good. I’m hopeful by their leadership, maturity and experience they will help our defense start off this season where we finished the regular season last year. This year we’re returning a group of guys who have at least played a lot of football."

On Improvement by the Defensive Front
"I don't know that we’ve got a real dominant player at that position. I think we have some guys who are good players and could be really good. Isaac Hedges could be a really good player. We’re looking for those other guys who are playmakers. I think we’re ahead of where we were last year. I’m looking for the dynamics. I’m looking for the guy that when other teams watch our tape they say,’We better really account for this guy.’"

On the Offensive Line's Expectations
"I think they’ve still got to prove themselves that they’re cracked up to be what everybody says they’re going to be. Obviously, we’ve got a proven players from the Gulf South Conference, but we're moving to a power offense where their abilities will make or break us. On top of that, we're going in to play in the highest level of college football. We're hopeful that this good group of young men will be able to respond to the challenge."

On the Kicking Game
"I hope we take another step. (RJ) Burgess needs to have another big year and if Andy (Fredrickson) could start off from the get-go kicking like he did from mid-season on, that would be another plus for us. We’re going to see where our return game is. I don’t think we have a person right now who’s established like we were last year on punt returns. The kickoff returns, we never really got much done last year so that’s wide open."

On the 2004 Schedule
"I had nothing to do with the scheduling, the NCAA helped our athletic director with that. Still, our non-conference games may be the easiest of all the Solecismic Eight.

"It's exciting. I'm glad we're opening the season with three games on the road. Other coaches, teams, may not like it, but we love it. We want to go out there and show the country that Arkansas Tech football is for real. We're playing to win and to gain respect. We won't be disappointed if we lose a game or games, but we're going to play our hearts out. It’s a great schedule and we’re certainly not ducking anybody. To win the conference you’ve got to win on the road and we certainly have some tests, that’s for sure."

Nielsen Chosen in 2004 NFL Draft

Arkansas Tech: First player chosen since 1976

Don't call former Wonder Boy linebacker Rob Nielsen irrelevant. It doesn't sit well with him. True, he was the last player selected in this year's NFL draft, making him the dubious "Mr. Irrelevant," but he doesn't feel that's irrelevant.

The Chicago Bears traded to obtain the last pick of the 2004 draft and used the selection to take the former Arkansas Tech linebacker. By selecting him instead of hoping to sign him as a free agent, Chicago ensured exclusive rights to signing Nielsen to a contract.

"I'm excited to be a Bear," Nielsen responded via phone, "I'm originally from the Chicago area, so it's a dream come true for me.

"I've already spoke to the coaching staff. They're excited to bring me in. I'll be playing special teams and working to team up with Brian Urlacher. It's going to be a lot of hard work, but I'm excited about it."

Nielsen was the first ATU player ever invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis earlier this year. He impressed scouts with his athletic ability. The main question was the level of competition he played against at Arkansas Tech.

Nielsen held his own in the Blue and Grey game, but sometimes looked a little overwhelmed.

"All my life, all I wanted was an opportunity. Tech gave me a shot when other schools wouldn't. Now the Bears are giving me that shot. I'm going to make the most of it."

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

September 4, 2004

Official Press Release

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys @ Western Michigan Broncos Preview

Arkansas Tech opens their inaugural season in division 1-A football on the road today against the Western Michigan Broncos. The Broncos finished last season 5-7, losing 5 of their last 7 games.

Arkansas Tech looks to focus on the run today, unveiling their new double wing offense. The offense looks to feature the running ability of running back Ray Best and quarterback Lamont Pearson. When the pass is needed look for SOL 8 first teamers Pearson and receiver Scott Baerg to hook up for the needed yards.

The Broncos feature a balanced offense, with most of their plays coming out of the I formation. The Broncos feature a very capable quarterback, a trio of good running backs, and an all conference selection at the tight end position.

Arkansas Tech's defense will have a tough battle ahead of them. Fortunately, they have four SOL 8 All Americans to help the cause, including three on the defensive line. Look for backup tackle Jimmy Spry to also be in the mix.

Western Michigan hangs their hat on their defense, and they're incredibly good. If the Wonder Boys are to win this game, they'll need to make sure they block linebackers Brandon Markle and Kelly Colson as well as defensive end Luke Cutting.

Prediction: Wonder Boys lose a tough season opener, 28-24.

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

September 4, 2004

Official Press Release

Wonder Boys Win Opener; Tame Broncos 42-17.

Mayes University only other SOL 8 team to win opener

It wasn't supposed to be an easy game, and it wasn't for the first half. Arkansas Tech (1-0) relied on two walk ons and scored 28 points in the 2nd half to pull away from the Western Michigan Broncos (0-1).

The Broncos scored first late in the first quarter when Juan Shaw hit Lenny Creamer on a 25 yard touchdown pass. The Wonder Boys would answer early in the second quarter with their own touchdown pass, Lamont Pearson to Scottie Baerg, off a masterful play-action fake.

Arkansas Tech took the lead later in the second quarter when Pearson surprised everyone and kept the ball on a naked bootleg, scoring from 9 yards out.

Western Michigan took the second half kickoff and marched downfield before walk on freshman Terrance Henson, playing as a dimeback, intercepted an errant pass and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown, 21-7 Wonder Boys. Coach Enthusiast would later say that was the real turning point of the game and where the Wonder Boys started believing they could win the game.

Western Michigan once again moved down the field, this time scoring on a 5 yard Bubba Chapman run cutting the ATU lead to 7.

Tech then opened the game wide open with three touchdowns, one on the ground, one in the air, and one on defense. Pearson caught the defense off guard with an option run for a 15 yard score to make it 28-14. Safety Leon Jagger stepped in front of Shaw pass down the sideline and returned it 64 yards for the score, 35-14. Finally, after 8 straight runs, Tech threw a play-action pass to former walk on freshman Antoine Craig that went 42 yards and a score.

Western Michigan added a consolation field goal with less than a minute left, making the final score 42-17, Wonder Boys.

Craig, a walk on from Fayetteville, Arkansas, was awarded a scholarship at the end of summer practice when he beat out a number of other tight ends to be the second tight end on the depth chart. Tight ends play an important role in the double wing offense.

Double Wing Passing: Pearson walked away with the game ball after completing 13 of 18 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He added 41 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on the ground as well. Pearson is currently has the highest quarterback rating of qualifiers in the SOL 8 (190.0).

Injury report: Running back Ray Best left the game early in the fourth quarter after a rough hit. Early reports are that he suffered a concussion. It is unclear what his status is. Defensive end Jamal McCarthy suffered a sprained knee and will likely miss a week or two. Kicker Andy Fredrickson suffered a bruised ribcage during one of the kickoffs, but will not miss any game time.

Making the most: With Best getting most of the work through the first quarter of the game, the Bronco defense began to key on him. Tied at 7 in the second quarter, the Wonder Boys ran a fake toss to Best. Instead of the toss, junior running back Ross Chitwood took an inside handoff and followed guard Vinny Sawyer the opposite way for a 46 yard gain, setting up the go-ahead score.

Running it up: Tech ran the ball 46 times for over 200 yards but failed to have a 100 yard rusher. The closest? Best ran for 91 yards, Chitwood had 81. Best and Chitwood are the leading rushers in the SOL 8.

Making the most 2: Craig tied for the team lead with 4 catches, but led the team in receiving yards with 77.

Paper or plastic? Defensive end Winfred DeVito had two sacks and leads the SOL 8.

Leading the way: Guards Sawyer and Quinn Hampton combined for 9 key run blocks.

Who's next? Next week Tech takes on #35 Minnesota at the Metrodome.

Other scores:
Little Rock 3, Illinois 80
Central Arkansas 7, Kansas State 38
Arkansas A&M 0, Nebraska 34
Volmert State 7, Georgia 73
Hawaii 34, Northwestern State 8
Louisiana-Lafayette 17, Mayes U. 45
Southern Arkansas 13, UConn 56

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

September 11, 2004

Official Press Release

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys @ Minnesota Golden Gophers Preview

Arkansas Tech faces a strong challenge today when the Wonder Boys face the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Gophers won last week when they hosted Toledo, 38-7.

Arkansas Tech may be without leading rusher Ray Best, who is still suffering from a concussion last week. Quarterback Lamont Pearson and running back Ross Chitwood may be asked to pick up the slack. Pearson, receiver Scott Baerg, and tight end Antoine Craig got the passing game going last week. The trio are looking for a repeat performance this week.

The Golden Gophers feature a balanced offense, with most of their plays coming out of the pro formation. The Gophers were nearly dead even in the amount of passes and runs last week. The Gophers quarterback is a redshirt freshman who threw 4 interceptions last week. Minnesota was able to overcome the freshman's mistakes with an incredible ground game. Junior Clifton Sawyer had 122 yards on just 13 carries. Tight end JR Matthews had 5 catches for 100 yards.

Arkansas Tech's defense was impressive against Western Michigan and will need a repeat performance in order to compete today. Defensive ends Isaac Hedges had 6 tackles and Winfred DeVito added 2 sacks. Sophs Damon Kaplan and Dustin Alston and freshman TJ Ruby each contributed a sack as well.

Minnesota's defense is stout and is led by senior free safety Randal Francis and junior cornerback Myron Sheaffer. Don't look for the Wonder Boys to have nearly the same success as they had last week.

Injury report
Arkansas Tech
Questionable: DE Jamal McCarthy
Probable: RB Ray Best, K Andy Fredrickson

Minnesota
None

Prediction: Minnesota is favored by 9.

Official Press Release

Wonder Boys Fall to Golden Gophers, 35-6

Mayes University improves to 2-0, Three SOL 8 Schools Win

Arkansas Tech (1-1) often times appeared overmatched as the Minnesota Golden Gophers (2-0) marched down the field. Tech intercepted three passes, one in the endzone, or the game could have been worse.

Both defenses were strong in the first quarter as the offenses were shutout. The Gophers, however, would not be denied. Early in the second, Randall Copeland hauled in a 3 yard touchdown pass from AJ Sawyer. 10 minutes later, Clifton Sawyer found the endzone on a goalline plunge. The teams went to the locker rooms, 14-0 Gophers.

Tech responded in the third by mounting it's first serious drive and it resulted in a successful 35 yard field goal by Andy Fredrickson. Minnesota answered with a 20 yard scoring pass from Sawyer to Neil Broussard. 21-3 Gophers.

Late in the third, cornerback Irving Swift intercepted an errant Sawyer throw and returned it to the Gopher 17. Unfortunately, the Wonder Boys could not move the ball again and settled for another 35 yarder from Fredrickson. Minnesota closed out the game with two more Clifton Sawyer runs for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Disappearing Act: The running game was a non-factor in today's game. Best had 21 carries for 46 yards. Chitwood's counter runs were unsuccessful as well, he had 4 carries for 19 yards. The best running play the Wonder Boys had all day was the reverse to Scottie Baerg. Baerg had two carries for 16 yards.

Injury report: Free safety Neil Jamison left the game early in the 3rd quarter with an ankle injury. A MRI is scheduled for Monday.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow: Tight end Antoine Craig, a big part of the passing game last week, was only thrown to twice during the Minnesota game and did not have a reception.

3 of 12: 3 of 12 isn't too bad in baseball, but that's actually Lamont Pearson's passing line. For the day, he was credited with 3 completions in 12 attempts for 33 yards. Sacked 4 times, he also recorded 3 bad throws, had 3 passes defensed, 1 blocked, and hurried 2 of his throws.

Who's next? Next week Tech faces #12 Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game can be seen on TV5.

Other scores:
Memphis 35, Arkansas A&M 7
Little Rock 39, UTEP 27
Mayes 33, Kent State 30

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

September 18, 2004

Official Press Release

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys @ #12 Alabama Crimson Tide Preview

Arkansas Tech plays their final non-conference road game today as they face the Alabama Crimson Tide. The game can be seen on TV5. Alabama is 2-0 and has yet to give up a touchdown, outscoring their opponents 79-3.

Arkansas Tech's Ray Best ran for 51 yards against the Golden Gophers but is still looking for his first touchdown on the ground this year. Lamont Pearson, receiver Scottie Baerg, and tight end Antoine Craig have to show the passing game is not dead at Arkansas Tech. The trio look to try and provide balance to the running attack.

Alabama features a somewhat unconventional double wing attack, relying on their quarterback and fullback to shoulder the load instead of the running backs. Quarterback Phil Walsh has completed over 70% of his passes and 4 touchdowns. He also leads the team in rushing with 163 yards.

Arkansas Tech's defense showed weakness against Minnesota, allowing four drives of 50 yards or more. Look for ATU to try and shake things up to try and confuse the Tide. Defensive end Isaac Hedges leads the team with 15 tackles.

Alabama's defense could very well be the best defense the Wonder Boys face all season long. Teams are averaging just 3.53 yards per pass attempt. The run defense is even better; teams are averaging just 1.91 per carry. It could get ugly.

Injury report
Arkansas Tech
Out: S Neil Jamison (high ankle sprain)
Questionable: DE Jamal McCarthy (sprain knee)
Probable: RB Ray Best (concussion), K Andy Fredrickson (bruised ribs)

Alabama
Doubtful: DT Dusty Uno

Prediction: Alabama is favored by 8. Take Alabama.

Houston, we're going to have a problem. My wonderful computer rebooted after installing a few updates last night. My last save was before the Minnesota game. Just an FYI, we'll be going into the Way Back Machine and play the Gopher game again.

In case you're interested, we were also blown out, horribly, by Alabama. I'm not looking forward to replaying that one.

Lesson learned, save after every step. I'll edit the game wrap up of the Minnesota game, the game preview of the Bama game and work from there.

Edit: Stinking Minnesota game ended up worse. Instead of losing a starting fullback, which didn't really concern me, I lost a starting safety, which really does concern me.

Caught up, but I'm heading out to lunch with my old HS coach. I'll post the wrap up when I get back.

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

September 18, 2004

Official Press Release

Crimson Tide Thrash Wonder Boys 45-7

Fumble on opening kickoff set the pace

Alabama quarterback Phil Walsh gained 82 yards on the ground with two touchdowns and was 9 of 11 through the air for another touchdown as the Alabama Crimson Tide (3-0) soundly defeated the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (1-2).

The Wonder Boy offense was largely ineffective until the fourth quarter, when both teams had their second teamers in. Running back Ross Chitwood led the team in rushing with 48 yards and the lone ATU touchdown. Ray Best finished with a disappointing 31 yards.

Quarterback Lamont Pearson did not fare well passing for the second game in a row. He finished 3 of 12 for 42 yards and an interception. His day was cut short midway through the 3rd quarter when head coach Ardent Enthusiast sent in walk on freshman from Marlon Beyer to mop up. Beyer, who grew up just 60 miles outside of the Alabama campus, went 5 of 7 for 44 yards.

Wide receiver Nate Matthews led the team with 4 catches and 37 yards, but was credited with 2 drops as well. Fellow receiver Scottie Baerg had 1 reception for 26 yards.

Pushed around: For the second week in a row, the defense appeared overmatched and undersized. Defensive end Isaac Hedges and linebacker Trent Lynch led the team with 7 tackles and 1 assist each.

Injury report: No injuries were reported after the game.

Paging Craig: Tight end Antoine Craig, a big part of the passing game against Western Michigan, hasn't had a reception in the last two games. Craig only had one pass thrown his way in today's game.

3 of 12: Lamont Pearson's completions and attempts the past two weeks were an identical 3 completions of 12 attempts.

Scholarship awarded: Senior safety walk on David Farrell from nearby Paragould was awarded a scholarship after being tabbed the starting strong safety in today's game against Alabama. Arkansas Tech still has 5 scholarships available for this season.

Who's next? ATU has the week off to try and get healthy before starting conference play at home against Southern Arkansas.

Other scores:

Wake Forest 31, Northwestern St 10
Temple 22, Little Rock 21
Fresno St 48, Mayes 3
Southern Arkansas 30, San Jose St 10
Volmert St 10, Central Michigan 7
Arkansas A&M 24, Middle Tenn St 14
