2007 Off-Season:

The 2007 NFL Draft: New York Jets Draft Review

Round One:

DE Adam Carriker - Adam Carriker, the Jets first pick in the draft, will fill a hole that not only had a vacancy left by last year's starter Kimo von Oelhoffen, but was in dire need of an upgrade. After finishing last in run defense for the 2006 season, head coach Eric Mangini vowed that he would do anything he could to improve that aspect of the team. Carriker, who is 6'6" and 295 lbs., will bring a big body to the line, which will allow the linebackers to get to the ball-carrier faster. He will bring an instant upgrade to the line, and will develop quickly into a solid defensive end.

Round Two:

RT Ryan Harris - The Jets, who drafted two offensive linemen in the first round of the 2006 draft, add another young body with this early second round pick. Harris will start at right tackle for the Jets in 2007 and will turn their offensive line into a dominant force for years to come. Harris is a strong pass-blocking tackle but will also open up some big holes for the running backs. He is strong, has long arms, and is a hard worker who won't tire out through the game.

NT/DE Abomi Okoye - Okoye is a very interesting story and was a pretty solid pick. He will not only back up Dewayne Robertson, but can also move to the outside, and will rotate in with Robertson, Ellis, and Carriker. Okoye, who moved to the United States from Nigeria, tested out of high school, and entered college at the age of 16. He was then a four-year starter at Louisville, graduating at the age of 20.

Round Three:

C/G Dustin Fry - Fry, a center out of Clemson, will not only provide depth on the offensive line, but may be the future replacement of LG Pete Kendall, who is entering his 12th season. Fry has tremendous upside and has the potential to be a future starter. This season, he will most likely back up Kendall, but may take over at some point in the season.

Round Four:

No picks selected.

Round Five:

CB/S Bobby Blackshire - Blackshire, who was a safety while playing at Tulsa, is a special teams player, but has some decent coverage skills. He will be fighting for a spot as the 5th cornerback.

RB Austin Scott - Scott will be the 4th running back on the team, but does bring some good skills to the team. He doesn't have the potential to be a great running back in the NFL, but may be a decent backup, and if he makes the team, will provide help in special teams.

Round Six:

CB/S Joey Vincent - Vincent is an unpolished college safety out of New Mexico State, who will compete for the 5th cornerback spot on the team. He has very good special teams skills, and is an exceptional run defending defensive back.

LB George Hall - Hall will have a pretty tough time making the team, but an impressive training camp will probably keep him around for the pre-season games. He has the skills, but he is very unpolished and there are definitely better options at linebacker.

Round Seven:

S Brandon Massey - Massey is a very unpolished player, who may have the potential to be a solid backup in the future.

Holdout Update:

About two weeks after the NFL Draft, veteran linebacker Victor Hobson announced that he would hold out and not report to training camp without a new contract. Hobson would currently make $720,000 dollars this year, with a $300,000 bonus.

Hobson, and his agent Scott Haupt, have asked for an extension that would keep him on the Jets for two more years, with a raise for this season, a contract that would total $8,950,000 over the three years. Head coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum have not commented on the matter.

I'm not sure. He was listed as very overrated, but I really wanted him to stop the run, and his rating in that is about 70-ish (in orange). I'm hoping that he develops a little bit in training camp, and develops a little bit by getting a ton of playing time this season. His play diagnosis and punishing hitter stats are below 25 though, so maybe that is what is bringing overall rating down?

Training Camp Update:

The summer is here, and Hempstead, NY has become the new home of Jets rookies and veterans alike.

Today was the first day of camp, and it started out quickly. Last summer, Eric Mangini turned Jets training camp into an absolutely brutal one, a camp that used to be known "Club Ed" when the team was under Herman Edwards. The day began at 5:15 AM, when all of the 80 players that were under contract began running out of the dorms. Some were rookies, such as Adam Carriker and Ryan Harris, some were veterans, like Laveranues Coles and Pete Kendall, and some were undrafted free agents, who really were just there to give the team live players to play against. One player who wasn't there, was linebacker Victor Hobson, who has decided to hold out rather than play. Head coach Eric Mangini has stated that if Hobson does not want to play for the Jets he will be traded.

However, there was always a possibility that one of them could make the team. If one of the 53 players who are slated to make the team go down with an injury, one of these guys could possibly make the team. But, with everyone healthy, the chances are slim, but they are happy that they have the chance to make an NFL team.

At 5:30 AM, the players ended their run at the team weight room, where all of them have different workouts and regimens based on the position they play. For example, Dennis Northcutt, is a measely 171 lbs. He will be attempting to put on some weight. Another player who is trying to put on some weight is Ryan Harris, who came out of college at only 302 lbs. He will be on a strict regimen to gain weight.

One player who wasn't there, was linebacker Victor Hobson, who has decided to hold out rather than play. Head coach Eric Mangini has stated that if Hobson does not want to play for the Jets he will be traded.

After one hour and fifty-six minutes, the team left the weight room and headed towards their locker room to get their pads. That's right, their first day would be full contact.

Players donned their pads and headed onto the field, and split into 4 teams, practicing their passing plays in 7-on-7 dirlls.

Then, almost three hours later, the special teams drills began. Coach Mangini and special-teams coach Mike Westhoff have stated that this must be an area that the team improves in.

After about 6 hours of practice, the Jets headed to the cafeteria where they re-gained their strength and relaxed.

Then, it was off to the practice field where the defense practiced their tackling and their 3-4 techniques.

After about 3 hours and 20 minutes, the team practiced their running drills.

After the running drills, there was no more on-the-field action, and rest of the day was hidden inside the Jets complex, where they would study films of the practice and go over the playbook, and then participate in team functions, where maybe coach Mangini would show some of his famous boxing films from last season.

Holdout Update:

A few days after the roster was slimmed down to below 60 players, Jets linebacker Victor Hobson announced that he would end his holdout and would return to training camp. Coach Mangini has still not commented on the matter.

Transaction Update:

With the Jets roster now at 58, and with depth needed at the LT position, they have made a trade with the New Orleans Saints, giving them their 3rd-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, getting LT Cornelius Buckner in return. He will give the jets valuable depth on the offensive line.

Transaction Update:

With another player needed to backup DE Shaun Ellis, the Jets have made a move to aquire Bills DT Ron Edwards, giving the Bills their 7th-round pick in the 2008 Draft, which many view as a real steal for the Jets. Edwards played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2006, and was then signed by the Buffalo Bills in the off-season.

He picked up 6.5 sacks in 2006, starting 14 of 16 games, and had 28 tackles. He will bolster the Jets defensive line and provide valuable depth.

Transaction Update:

With the Jets having rookie Adam Carriker start at defensive end this season, the team's coaching staff and front office decided to bring in a player who has had over 11 seasons in experience, hoping that he could be a mentor of sorts to help Carriker handle the stress of the NFL and teach him things along the way.

Trading their 6th-rounder in the 2008 draft and S Erik Coleman to the Detroit Lions, the Jets got DE Phillip Daniels, a 12th year player who will bring experience to the team.

2007 Goals

OFFENSE

1. End the season as the least penalized team.
2. Mix up the offense, using different types of players in different situations.
3. Develop RT Harris into a starting caliber player.
4. Being the season by rotating Dustin Fry into the LG rotation. As the season progresses, determine whether Fry has the abilities to start at LG.
5. Spread the ball around, hitting as many receivers as possible each game, and handing the ball off to as many runners as possible.

DEFENSE

1. Develop Carriker into a starting caliber defensive end.
2. Rotate Okoye through every position on the defensive line.
3. Make stopping the run a priority. Become a top fifteen ranked run-defense.
4. Give LB's Cody Spencer and Matt Chatham more playing time than last season.

OVERALL

1. Make the playoffs.
2. Keep players happy.
3. Overthrow the Patriots in the AFC East.

The quarterback position, even though it was solid last year, will always
be somewhat of a concern going into the season, simply because of Chad
Penningtons injury history. However, the 2006 season seemed to be the
end of that era, and the beginning of a new one. With Pennington having
a solid season, winning 9 games and missing the playoffs by only one,
Chad looks to have another solid season, especially after having his
first off-season in a a few years to focus on football and not on
rehabilitating his injured shoulder.

some people.

Michael Sellers was a solid free agent pickup this off-season, and brings
not only a good ability to block, but can also carry the ball well, and

With Daniel Graham being one of the top free agents available this off
season, the Jets landing him may propel them to the top of the AFC East,

double tight-end sets, giving Pennington some big targets, especially in the
red-zone.

with those two and Frisman Jackson competing for the 5th WR spot.

The offensive line is extremely young, but also extremely talented. With
Kendall now the oldest starter on the line, rookie Dustin Fry may take over
during the season, depending on how he does when rotating in to the LG
position. Also, rookie Ryan Harris will hopefully develop into a starter
this year, which would turn the offensive line into one of the best, and 
youngest in the league.

Graham has been very good for the Jets, and will look to have another
solid season. Nugent will have another year to prove that he can make NFL

The defensive line, who had a very rough 2006 season, will look to become
a solid run-defending team. With 5 of the 8 players being new this year,
they will have to gel together to become solid, but the skills are now there.
Rookie DE Adam Carriker will have to prove he was worth a number one pick,
and Abomi Okoye will have to do well when he has the chance to play. A solid
season could put him at the top of the depth chart later on this year or in 
2008.

The Jets have a lot of role players on this squad, with some of them good
run defenders and some good pass-rushers. The Jets will look to make the
most out of each players skills. Rob Morris and Eric Barton will compete
for the oppurtunity to start next to Jonathan Vilma, a solid player who had
a less-than stellar, but good season last year. Look for his numbers to improve
with a better defensive line.

The addition of Nate Clements is going to change the face of the defense.
With rookie Drew Coleman and Andre Dyson starting last year, the Jets played
better than many expected but were not dominant by any means. Blackshire and
Vincent will compete for the #5 spot on the depth chart, but look for Drew Coleman
and Justin Miller to play the nickel and dime spots, a huge upgrade for those
positions from last season.

2007 Opening Day Depth Chart: Offense

With opening day only a couple days away, the Jets have posted their official opening day offensive depth chart. It is subject to chance, based on injuries and other circumstances.

There aren't many big surprises, but some expected rookie LG Dustin Fry to possibly begin the season as the starter, but it looks like head coach Eric Mangini has decided to start the veteran guard Pete Kendall instead. I wouldn't be surprised if Fry takes over early in the season, however.

Possibly the biggest surprise is that undrafted rookie free agent David Ligon won a roster spot over veteran Trey Teague. The coaching staff believes that Ligon has a lot of upside and could develop into a good backup. This news came a few days ago when the Jets announced their final 53-man roster, delivering the news that Teague had been cut.

The Jets have stated that the opening day defensive depth chart will be announced within the next day or two.

2007 Opening Day Depth Chart: Defense

With the offensive depth chart being announced yesterday, today the New York Jets have released their official 2007 defensive depth chart. Once again, injuries are unnacounted for as they were on the offensive depth chart.

The Jets, with three new starters on defense, look to improve on a dissapointing 2006 campaign. With rookie Adam Carriker beginning the season as a starter, he will look to prove he can handle the role, and will contribute heavily to the Jets improved run defense.

Another new starter, Nate Clements, will hope to improve the overall defense of the team, with good coverage skills as well as good run support. With the season now only 3 days away, tomorrow the Jets will announce the starters for special teams, the final piece of the football puzzle.

2007 Opening Day Depth Chart: Special Teams

Today, the New York Jets announced the final piece of the depth chart, releasing the opening day special teams depth chart.

No real surprises here. Kicker Mige Nugent and Ben Graham will head the special teams group and look to expand on fairly solid 2006 seasons. Kick returner Justin Miller and punt returner Dennis Northcutt will look to give the Jets solid starting field position in 2007.

Notes:

This is a tough way to open up the season. Chad had a hard time getting into a rythm with the receivers, something that we are going to have to work on this week in practice. We honestly should have won this game, and we didn't. There were a lot of different factors that contributed to it, and we need to do better in all three phases of the game if we want to win in this league. Chad started out pretty strong, but then he couldn't find his target anymore. The Bills defense played better than us, it's as simple as that. Laveranues Coles had a very rough day. Not sure whether it was him, Chad, or the Bills defense. We are gonna have to look at the tape to figure that out, but when a player is targeted 10 times and only had 3 catches on the day, something is wrong. The running game was probably our strongest point in the game, with T.J. Duckett having a very good game, gaining 87 yards on 12 carries. However, when you can't use the running game to open up the passing game and can't use the passing game to open up the running game, your simply not going to win games. That is the key to this offense and we did not execute at all.

On defense, we did an okay job stopping the run but gave up way to many big passing plays. We didn't get enough pressure on the quarterback, giving him way too much time to make passes, and it shows in the statistics. The one positive I see in this game is that Jon Vilma had a big day, one of the biggest since switching to the 3-4. He was all over the ball, which should help the defense a lot through the season.

With all of that said, we have some very sad news to report. After a very scary moment on the field, 2nd-year cornerback Drew Coleman was taken to the hospital and has been diagnosed with repetitive concussion syndrome and will be out for the rest of the year. Doctors have told our staff that his return to the NFL is doubtful. He will be in our thoughts, and anything that can be done to help Drew and his family through this will be taken care of. He has been a tremendous contributor to the team on and off the field, and he will be given every chance he wants to take to return to the team at some point.

JetsIn06 Pro Rookie Join Date: Dec 2006 Location: Rahway, NJ	2007 Off-Season: The 2007 NFL Draft: New York Jets Draft Review Round One: DE Adam Carriker - Adam Carriker, the Jets first pick in the draft, will fill a hole that not only had a vacancy left by last year's starter Kimo von Oelhoffen, but was in dire need of an upgrade. After finishing last in run defense for the 2006 season, head coach Eric Mangini vowed that he would do anything he could to improve that aspect of the team. Carriker, who is 6'6" and 295 lbs., will bring a big body to the line, which will allow the linebackers to get to the ball-carrier faster. He will bring an instant upgrade to the line, and will develop quickly into a solid defensive end. Round Two: RT Ryan Harris - The Jets, who drafted two offensive linemen in the first round of the 2006 draft, add another young body with this early second round pick. Harris will start at right tackle for the Jets in 2007 and will turn their offensive line into a dominant force for years to come. Harris is a strong pass-blocking tackle but will also open up some big holes for the running backs. He is strong, has long arms, and is a hard worker who won't tire out through the game. NT/DE Abomi Okoye - Okoye is a very interesting story and was a pretty solid pick. He will not only back up Dewayne Robertson, but can also move to the outside, and will rotate in with Robertson, Ellis, and Carriker. Okoye, who moved to the United States from Nigeria, tested out of high school, and entered college at the age of 16. He was then a four-year starter at Louisville, graduating at the age of 20. Round Three: C/G Dustin Fry - Fry, a center out of Clemson, will not only provide depth on the offensive line, but may be the future replacement of LG Pete Kendall, who is entering his 12th season. Fry has tremendous upside and has the potential to be a future starter. This season, he will most likely back up Kendall, but may take over at some point in the season. Round Four: No picks selected. Round Five: CB/S Bobby Blackshire - Blackshire, who was a safety while playing at Tulsa, is a special teams player, but has some decent coverage skills. He will be fighting for a spot as the 5th cornerback. RB Austin Scott - Scott will be the 4th running back on the team, but does bring some good skills to the team. He doesn't have the potential to be a great running back in the NFL, but may be a decent backup, and if he makes the team, will provide help in special teams. Round Six: CB/S Joey Vincent - Vincent is an unpolished college safety out of New Mexico State, who will compete for the 5th cornerback spot on the team. He has very good special teams skills, and is an exceptional run defending defensive back. LB George Hall - Hall will have a pretty tough time making the team, but an impressive training camp will probably keep him around for the pre-season games. He has the skills, but he is very unpolished and there are definitely better options at linebacker. JetsIn06 Pro Rookie Join Date: Dec 2006 Location: Rahway, NJ	Training Camp Update: The summer is here, and Hempstead, NY has become the new home of Jets rookies and veterans alike. Today was the first day of camp, and it started out quickly. Last summer, Eric Mangini turned Jets training camp into an absolutely brutal one, a camp that used to be known "Club Ed" when the team was under Herman Edwards. The day began at 5:15 AM, when all of the 80 players that were under contract began running out of the dorms. Some were rookies, such as Adam Carriker and Ryan Harris, some were veterans, like Laveranues Coles and Pete Kendall, and some were undrafted free agents, who really were just there to give the team live players to play against. One player who wasn't there, was linebacker Victor Hobson, who has decided to hold out rather than play. Head coach Eric Mangini has stated that if Hobson does not want to play for the Jets he will be traded. However, there was always a possibility that one of them could make the team. If one of the 53 players who are slated to make the team go down with an injury, one of these guys could possibly make the team. But, with everyone healthy, the chances are slim, but they are happy that they have the chance to make an NFL team. At 5:30 AM, the players ended their run at the team weight room, where all of them have different workouts and regimens based on the position they play. For example, Dennis Northcutt, is a measely 171 lbs. He will be attempting to put on some weight. Another player who is trying to put on some weight is Ryan Harris, who came out of college at only 302 lbs. He will be on a strict regimen to gain weight. One player who wasn't there, was linebacker Victor Hobson, who has decided to hold out rather than play. Head coach Eric Mangini has stated that if Hobson does not want to play for the Jets he will be traded. After one hour and fifty-six minutes, the team left the weight room and headed towards their locker room to get their pads. That's right, their first day would be full contact. Players donned their pads and headed onto the field, and split into 4 teams, practicing their passing plays in 7-on-7 dirlls. Then, almost three hours later, the special teams drills began. Coach Mangini and special-teams coach Mike Westhoff have stated that this must be an area that the team improves in. After about 6 hours of practice, the Jets headed to the cafeteria where they re-gained their strength and relaxed. Then, it was off to the practice field where the defense practiced their tackling and their 3-4 techniques. After about 3 hours and 20 minutes, the team practiced their running drills. After the running drills, there was no more on-the-field action, and rest of the day was hidden inside the Jets complex, where they would study films of the practice and go over the playbook, and then participate in team functions, where maybe coach Mangini would show some of his famous boxing films from last season. Hobson would currently make $720,000 dollars this year, with a $300,000 bonus. Hobson, and his agent Scott Haupt, have asked for an extension that would keep him on the Jets for two more years, with a raise for this season, a contract that would total $8,950,000 over the three years. Head coach Eric Mangini and general manager Mike Tannenbaum have not commented on the matter.

Edwards played for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2006, and was then signed by the Buffalo Bills in the off-season. He picked up 6.5 sacks in 2006, starting 14 of 16 games, and had 28 tackles. He will bolster the Jets defensive line and provide valuable depth.

Trading their 6th-rounder in the 2008 draft and S Erik Coleman to the Detroit Lions, the Jets got DE Phillip Daniels, a 12th year player who will bring experience to the team. Mix up the offense, using different types of players in different situations. 3. Develop RT Harris into a starting caliber player. 4. Being the season by rotating Dustin Fry into the LG rotation. As the season progresses, determine whether Fry has the abilities to start at LG. 5. Spread the ball around, hitting as many receivers as possible each game, and handing the ball off to as many runners as possible. DEFENSE 1. Develop Carriker into a starting caliber defensive end. 2. Rotate Okoye through every position on the defensive line. 3. Make stopping the run a priority. Become a top fifteen ranked run-defense. 4. Give LB's Cody Spencer and Matt Chatham more playing time than last season. OVERALL 1. Make the playoffs. 2. Keep players happy. 3. Overthrow the Patriots in the AFC East.

It is subject to chance, based on injuries and other circumstances. There aren't many big surprises, but some expected rookie LG Dustin Fry to possibly begin the season as the starter, but it looks like head coach Eric Mangini has decided to start the veteran guard Pete Kendall instead. I wouldn't be surprised if Fry takes over early in the season, however. Possibly the biggest surprise is that undrafted rookie free agent David Ligon won a roster spot over veteran Trey Teague. The coaching staff believes that Ligon has a lot of upside and could develop into a good backup. This news came a few days ago when the Jets announced their final 53-man roster, delivering the news that Teague had been cut. The Jets have stated that the opening day defensive depth chart will be announced within the next day or two. Once again, injuries are unnacounted for as they were on the offensive depth chart. The Jets, with three new starters on defense, look to improve on a dissapointing 2006 campaign. With rookie Adam Carriker beginning the season as a starter, he will look to prove he can handle the role, and will contribute heavily to the Jets improved run defense. Another new starter, Nate Clements, will hope to improve the overall defense of the team, with good coverage skills as well as good run support. No real surprises here. Kicker Mige Nugent and Ben Graham will head the special teams group and look to expand on fairly solid 2006 seasons. Kick returner Justin Miller and punt returner Dennis Northcutt will look to give the Jets solid starting field position in 2007.
