NCAA Football: Greatest Season Never Played

I'll be using Whatifsports.com and replay the 2007 schedule using each college's best season since 1996. Since there are no lower divisions included in the database, creampuffs on schedules will be replaced by open Division 1 opponents. Sorry gang...no playoffs here. I'll be using a BCS-like system to determine the bowl pairings.

The Preseason Top 25 Poll looks like this.

Code:
1 USC 2004 2 Miami 2001 3 Texas 2005 4 Oklahoma 2000 5 Nebraska 1997 6 Tennessee 1998 7 Michigan 1997 8 Ohio State 2002 9 Florida State 1999 10 Auburn 2004 11 Florida 1996 12 LSU 2003 13 Georgia 2002 14 Penn State 2004 15 Arizona St. 1996 16 Boise State 2006 17 Washington 2000 18 Wisconsin 1998 19 Virginia Tech 1999 20 Louisville 2006 21 North Carolina 1997 22 Texas A&M 1998 23 Michigan St. 1999 24 Arizona 1998 25 UCLA 1997

99 Mississippi State – 15; 03 LSU (#12) – 13
Scott Westerfield’s five field goals and a big defensive stop on a two-point conversion attempt by LSU late in the game helped give the Bulldogs a big upset victory in Starkville. Mississippi State held a 3-0 lead after one quarter thanks to a 23 yard field goal by Westerfield. Early in the second quarter, LSU's Justin Vincent broke lose for a 73-yard run to the Bulldogs' 6 yard-line. On the next play Matt Mauck tossed a TD pass to Eric Edwards to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead. Mississippi State responded with Westerfield hitting long field goals of 46 and 50 yards to give the Bulldogs a 9-7 edge at the half. Defense was the name of the game in the second half. Westerfield tacked on two additional field goals in the third quarter, extending the Mississippi State lead to 15-7. With just under four minutes to play, Justin Vincent broke lose again, this time scoring on a 66-yard run. LSU went for two to tie the game, but a strong pass-rush forced Mauck to make an off-balance throw that fell incomplete in the endzone. After forcing the Bulldogs into a three-and-out, LSU had one final chance to score. Starting at their own 20, the Tigers drove to the Mississippi State 31. Facing a fourth down, with 11 seconds on the clock, Ryan Gaudet was wide right on a 48 yard attempt, sealing the victory for Mississippi State.

Leaders: Miss. St. – Dontae Walker 12r-51y, Kelvin Love 5c-48y, Wayne Madkin 22-37-204y-0-1int.; LSU – Justin Vincent 15r-158y-1td, Michael Clayton 6r-52y, Matt Mauck 18-32-170y-1td-1int.

00 Oregon State – 36; 04 Utah – 29
RB Ken Simonton rushed for 225 yards on 26 carries and scored on runs of 2, 64, 1 and 67 yards to lead Oregon State past Utah in Corvallis. After leading 21-10 at halftime, Oregon State watched the Utes cut their lead to 21-16 by the end of the third quarter on two David Caroll field goals. Oregon State started the final stanza with 17 play-91 yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard Simonton TD, giving the Beavers a 28-16 lead. However, Utah responded less than a minute later when Paris Warren pulled down a 67-yard TD pass from Alex Smith to make it 28-23. Utah took a 29-28 lead with 1:41 left in the game when Quinton Ganther scored on a 36 yard run. The try for two was unsuccessful. It looked like Utah might hold on to the win when on the Beavers' next possession, Simonton was tackled for a loss on a fourth down and four at the Oregon State 28. The Utes tried to keep the ball on the ground and run out the clock, but with just over a minute to play Ganther fumbled and Oregon State recovered at its own 30. On the first play, QB Jonathan Smith scrambled out of bounds after gaining three yards. Then Simonton burst through the line, outran several Utah defenders and raced 67-yards for a score. Patrick McCall converted the two point conversion making it 36-29. However, Utah wasn't finished yet. The Utes fielded the squibbed kickoff at their own 16 and returned it to the Oregon State 48. Alex Smith then drove Utah to the Beavers' 30, but on fourth down he was sacked by Nick Barnett ending the threat.

Leaders: Oregon St. – Ken Simonton 26r-225y-4td, T.J. Houshmandzadeh 5c-67y, Jonathan Smith 24-41-261y-1-3int.; Utah – Quinton Ganther 7r-84y-1td, Steve Savoy 5r-79y, Alex Smith 16-26-246y-2td-1int.

03 Miami (OH) – 30; 96 Ball State – 20
Ben Roethlisberger passed for 357 yards and 2 TDs as the Redhawks rallied to beat the Cardinals. Ball State came to Oxford ready to play and had built a 20-10 lead late in the second quarter. Miami’s Calvin Murray scored on a 7 yd. run with just over a minute to play in the half to cut that lead to 20-17. Jared Parseghian booted a 50 yard FG in the third quarter to knot the score 20-20, and then nailed a 27 yard chip-shot with 5:01 left in the game to give the Redhawks their first lead, 23-20. A 63 yard TD pass from Roethlisberger to Martin Nance on Miami’s next possession sealed the victory.

QB Josh Cribbs tossed 3 TDs to help lead the Golden Flashes to an upset victory over the Cyclones in Ames. Kent State led 35-17 after three quarters of play but had to weather a fourth quarter rally by the Cyclones. A 44 yard TD pass from Sage Rosenfels to J.J. Moses midway through the final period made it 35-27. However, Kent State’s defense stiffened after that, picking off Rosenfels twice.

Leaders: Kent St. – David Alston 16r-124y-1td, Matt Curry 3c-32y-1td, Joshua Cribbs 11-22-142y-3td-1int; Iowa St. – Ennis Haywood 24r-109y, Mike Banks 4c-44y, Sage Rosenfels 18-26-277y-2td-3int.

07 Tulsa – 44; 07 Louisiana-Monroe – 41 (OT1)
These two teams actually met this past season in Monroe. While the result was the same (a Tulsa win), the replay was a much more exciting affair than the actual game (35-17)! The lead changed hands several times. With 2:01 left in the game, Tulsa took a 38-31 lead when Paul Smith tossed a 10 yard TD pass to Dion Toliver. The Warhawks then took the kickoff and drove 77 yards in 10 plays, scoring on a 14 yard pass from Kinsmon Lancaster to Zeek Zacharie with 0:17 left on the clock. In overtime, Louisiana-Monroe had to settle for a 23-yard Cole Wilson field goal. Tulsa’s Smith responded by throwing a 15 yard game-winning TD to Toliver. The loss spoiled a stellar performance by the Warhawks’ RB Calvin Dawson, who finished with 293 rushing yards on 40 carries and three touchdowns.

Another upset! The Syracuse Orange ride RB James Mungro for 111 rushing yards and three touchdowns and play stingy defense to defeat Washington at the Carrier Dome. Despite rushing for 42 yards and scoring a touchdown on a scramble, the Huskies' Marques Tuiasosopo never finds his passing rhythm, completing only 12-of-28 passes for 135 yards. He also throws three interceptions...all are picked-off by Orange DB Latroy Oliver. After the game, Latroy can be heard shouting, "I made Tuiasosopo my personal biotch today."

While the Huskies are unable to generate any offense early, the Orange score on all six of their first-half possessions. This one is essentially over by the half, as Syracuse takes a commanding 33-3 lead into the locker room.

Leaders: Syracuse - James Mungro 29r-111y-3tds, Johnnie Morant 3c-42y, R.J. Anderson 13-22-136y-0-0; Washington - Willie Hurst 12r-105y, Todd Elstrom 5c-55y, Marques Tuiasosopo 12-28-135y-0-3int.

John Vaughn boots four field goals and Ronnie Brown scores on a 10 yard run in the second quarter as Auburn edges Kansas State 19-17 at Jordan-Hare stadium. Neither team is able to generate much offense until about halfway through the first quarter, when Auburn's Kevin Sears intercepts a Jonathan Beasley pass and returns it to Tigers' 49. Auburn drives to the Kansas State 12, where Vaughn kicks a 29-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Kansas State answers on its next drive. Starting from their own 33, Frank Murphy takes a pitch right for 37 yards to the Auburn 30. On the next play, Joe Hall takes it up the middle the remaining distance for a TD. Jamie Rheem misses the PAT, so Kansas State leads 6-3. K-State ups its lead to 8-3 on Auburn's next possession when Mark Simoneau sacks Auburn's Jason Campbell for a safety. Rheem adds a 39 yard field goal midway through the second period before Brown scores late to make it 11-10, K-State, at the half. The only scoring in the third quarter are two John Vaughn field goals, which gives Auburn a 16-11 lead heading into the final quarter. Kansas State begins the period by driving 85 yards on 9 plays and retakes the lead when Joe Hall scores on a 12-yard run. The try for two fails, so the Wildcats' hold a one point edge, 17-16. Auburn responds by driving to the Kansas State 15 yard line in seven-plays. From there, Vaughn boots a 32 yard field goal to give Auburn a 19-17 lead. The Tigers' defense forces a three-and-out on Kansas State's next possession. In one of the big upsets of the day, the Cowboys' Luke Phillips hits an 18-yard field goal at the end of the game as Oklahoma State stuns #13 Georgia 24-23 at Sanford Stadium. The Bulldogs look sluggish early, and trail 14-3 after one quarter. As the second quarter gets underway, Georgia seems to right itself and take control of the game. Tony Milton scores on a 6 yard run and Musa Smith scores on a 34 yard run to give Georgia the lead at half-time, 17-14. Billy Bennett then kicks two field goals in the third to increase the Bulldogs' lead, 23-14. Bennett tries to extend the Georgia lead with 5:30 left in the game, but his 50 yard field goal attempt is just short. The Cowboys take over and cut the Georgia lead to two points when Tatum Bell scores a touchdown on a draw play that covers 36 yards. The Bulldogs are unable to pick up a first down on their next possession and are forced to punt. Oklahoma State starts on its own 37 with 2:54 left on the clock and drives to the Georgia 15. During the drive, the Cowboys convert a crucial 3rd & 8 when Josh Fields completes a pass to Terrance Davis-Bryant. With 0:03 left, Phillips hooks his kick through the uprights to win it for Oklahoma State.

Note -- I'm not sure what's up with Georgia Tech. They are 0-2 coming out of the gate, and have pretty much been blown out in both games.

They went 10-2 during the 98 season. True, they weren't a dominant team, and while I'm not surprised they've started out 0-2, I am surprised that they've been so thoroughly blown out. Sorry Tech fans.
