------------------------------------------------------------------------- Redskins | Taylor Could Face Fine From NFL - from www.KFFL.com Mon, 12 Jul 2004 08:55:20 -0700 Nunyo Demasio, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins rookie S Sean Taylor could be facing a $10,000 fine from the NFL for leaving the mandatory four-day rookie symposium that was held in La Costa, Calif., in June. Taylor left the event after informing the Redskins that he needed to go back to Miami to clear out his apartment before getting evicted. According to sources, Taylor initially flew to the Washington area, and the league telephoned the Redskins to inform them Taylor would be fined and forced to participate in the symposium next year if he didn't immediately go back. After contacting Taylor, the Redskins hurried him on a flight back to San Diego for the final two days of the symposium.

Great. Joe Gibbs' first pick since coming back to Washington is going to be as reliable as his last first-round pick.
Why is this shit so hard for these guys? Honestly. You're paid millions of dollars to play football. It's not that hard. Show up when you're supposed to. Work out. Stay in shape. Play hard. Don't do drugs. Don't drink too much. Don't be stupid with the women. Hire a frickin' agent, and someone reliable to help take care of the money. It's not brain surgery. Taylor needs to get his shit together, or he's going to be done with the NFL faster than you can say "Shuler." |

I can see Taylor sitting in day 2 of the meeting and suddenly saying
"Oh shit. I left my Playstation 2 at the crib. Damn, I got to go get that bad boy." Seriously at least show some creativity in coming up with a reason for bailing out of the symposium. Elective eye lid surgery or something.

All that money and he doesn't have a few friends who would have done it for a little bit cheaper...

And I really wanted the Lions to draft this guy...
Well, hopefully things will work out for the best. Taylor will be a big ole bust and Roy Williams will be the second coming of Terrell Owens/Randy Moss minus the attitude and character flaws and such. |

Hell, I would have paid the landlord and cleaned out his apartment for just $5,000. All he had to do was ask.

Shaving gel can move baby!
Top pick Taylor injures knee on first day of practice By JOSEPH WHITE, AP Sports Writer July 28, 2004 AP - Jul 27, 2:50 pm EDT More Photos ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- A day after signing a seven-year, $18 million contract, rookie safety Sean Taylor sprained his right knee during practice on Wednesday.. The team's first-round draft pick was hurt as he rolled out of bounds while defending a play near the end of the practice, which came on the final day of a three-day passing camp. Coach Joe Gibbs said he didn't think the injury was serious, but that it had not been fully evaluated. ``I imagine they'll check it out every way you can check it out,'' Gibbs said. Dennard Wilson, a free agent rookie safety from Maryland, injured his left leg during the practice. Gibbs said Wilson's injury was more serious, leaving his status for training camp in doubt. Taylor, the No. 5 overall draft pick from Miami, was taking part in his first practice since signing his contract. He is projected as the opening day starter at free safety. The injury is the latest in a series of misadventures for Taylor, who fired his agent shortly after the draft and didn't hire a new one until last week. He also was fined $25,000 by the NFL for leaving a mandatory rookie symposium in June and suffered an eye injury during a minicamp prank when a pile of shaving gel was squirted into his face by linebacker LaVar Arrington.

When he's healthy, he's a decent TE, nothing spectacular. Tony Gonzalez and Shannon Sharpe are difference makers. I'd say Shockey (when healthy) is an obnoxious, poor-man's Frank Wycheck. |

I don't think he'll be Gonzelez, but I think he can be like Sharpe in the TE catagory. He just needs to stop being a prick and stay healthy.

Reggie Kelly/Tony Stewart/Matt THE BEAST Schobel is a great 3 guy rotation for the Bengals. Schobel, for some reason listed as 3rd string on bengals.com, showed signs of a coming out party last year but got hurt a lil' bit.

Didn't take him long to get back in the news again...
hxxp://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=1851628 The roller coaster existence of Washington Redskins first-round free safety Sean Taylor, the fifth overall selection in the draft but a player who has struggled considerably through the early stages of training camp, continues to careen wildly. Taylor on Tuesday dismissed agents Eugene Mato and Jeff Moorad and, for the second time in three months, will seek new representation, ESPN.com has learned. The pending irony in the move: Taylor's new agent is likely to be his old agent, Drew Rosenhaus, who the former University of Miami star inexplicably fired only a few days after the draft. According to NFL Players Association rules, a player cannot retain a new agent for five days after dismissing his former representative. But it will be an upset if Rosenhaus isn't Taylor's agent of record by early next week. Sources said that Taylor, who could not be reached for comment on Tuesday evening, is less than happy with how his contract compares to some of the deals bargained for other players in the top part of the first round. His hope is to convince Washington officials, perhaps after a season or two under his existing deal, to renegotiate the contract. If he retains Rosenhaus, as anticipated, Taylor will have a strong ally in that regard. It was Rosenhaus who negotiated a landmark contract for two-year veteran Clinton Portis after Washington acquired the standout tailback from Denver via trade. Rosenhaus also has a strong relationship with Washington management, particularly owner Dan Snyder, and has several clients on the Redskins roster. Even before the draft, Washington officials strongly recommended to Taylor that he consider retaining Rosenhaus. Taylor signed a seven-year contract with a base value of $40 million and bonuses totaling about $13 million. Including incentives, the deal could be worth as much as $40 million. In recent days, however, there have been some monster contracts, notably those signed by quarterback Eli Manning of the New York Giants and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals. The megadeals attracted the attention of the Resdskins safety. Rosenhaus is known for being a hands-on agent, very close to his clients, and it appears Taylor could use a stabilizing force. Touted as the best safety prospect to enter the league since Ronnie Lott in 1981, Taylor to this point has been unable to dislodge little-used third-year veteran Andre Lott, whose resume includes zero career starts, from the top of the free safety depth chart. He has looked ragged and confused at time in camp and hasn't made many plays. The rough first week of camp follows what can only be viewed as a tumultuous offseason for the former Hurricanes star. In addition to firing Rosenhaus, and then taking nearly three months to retain replacement representation, Taylor suffered a mild eye injury in an offseason workout when linebacker LaVar Arrington rubbed a shaving cream pie in his face. He then skipped out early on the NFL's mandatory symposium, drawing a $25,000 fine that is under appeal. Last week, in an organized workout preceding camp, he sustained a strained knee. |

This could be a first. A player talking about renogiating a contract he just signed a week ago. This is groundbreaking.

Yeah, he's talking 2 or 3 years from now. Right. That's an awfully long time from now. Give him the spring to stew about it, let him watch guys from next year's draft sign big deals, and he'll have one of those Ricky Williams weed-induced epiphanies. It'll be even worse if he plays well this year.

If I'm not mistaken, Joe Gibbs is the only head coach in the NFL who is also in the Hall of Fame (as a head coach). Given the fact that he won 3 Super Bowls in ten years with three different quarterbacks (actually, three very different teams altogether), I'd say if any old coach is going to come out of retirement and have success in the modern NFL, it's going to be Joe Gibbs. |

Getting off on the Gibbs tangent for a second...
I think it's going to be interesting to see how this works out. While I'm not a big Redskin's fan, I do think Gibbs is probably one of the top 10 NFL coaches of all time. But he did it in a different era and hasn't really been involved with the NFL to any serious degree since those days. I think how the Redskins do over the next couple seasons will be a good indication of how important the head coach actually is to the game today. It will be interesting to see how things turn out. |

From Len Pasquarelli's Washington camp notes:
"Now starting at free safety for the 'Skins … first-round pick Sean Taylor? Uh, no. Try little-used third-year veteran Andre Lott, whose first two NFL seasons were remarkable only because of how unremarkable they were. That Lott is running with the first unit is partly attributable to the fact the former Tennessee star, a fifth-round pick in 2002 who has zero starts and 15 tackles in two seasons, has enjoyed a very nice camp. And also to the fact Taylor, who on occasion has worked as the No. 3 free safety, is off to what can only be called an inauspicious start. There just seems to be some bad karma floating around Taylor, who some scouts felt was the best safety prospect since Ronnie Lott, but who can't squeeze ahead of Andre Lott on the depth chart. The guy fired his agent days after the draft and then took three months to choose a replacement, only to fire the replacement Tuesday night, again leaving him without an agent. He played poorly in minicamps, suffered an eye abrasion when Arrington hit him in the face with a shaving cream pie, then skipped out early on the NFL's rookie symposium, which earned him a $25,000 fine. In the team's pre-camp last week, Taylor sprained his knee, and he has taken to blowing off interview requests. When pressed about their evaluations of him, some scouts now acknowledge Taylor basically mailed it in the second half of last year, knowing he was leaving school to enter the draft, and making sure he didn't get hurt. Who knows, maybe the guy will turn out to be the second coming off Ronnie Lott, but right now, he can't make a play. A couple more points on the secondary: Free agent addition Shawn Springs, who fought an incredible number of injuries (mostly hamstring problems) during his seven years in Seattle, looks very spry. And for whatever reason, Ifeanyi Ohalete, who started 15 games at free safety in 2003, has been dumped all the way back to the third unit."
