Too bad kids today grow up without porn parodies. The title for the Enola Holmes parody writes itself.

Abigail Spanberger must have got the 50,000 ad bundle special. The same ad is on once if not twice every local news commercial break.

(I a) have no idea who her opponent is and b) have seen virtually no other political ads.)

Quote:
Incumbent Abigail Spanberger (D) and Nick Freitas (R) are running in the November 3, 2020, general election in Virginia's 7th Congressional District.

Spanberger was first elected in 2018 after defeating incumbent David Brat (R) 50% to 48%. Heading into the 2018 election, the 7th District had been held by Republicans since 1971. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added Spanberger to its Frontline Program, which provides campaign support to vulnerable incumbents. The National Republican Congressional Committee named Freitas to the third tier of its Young Guns program, which supports battleground district candidates' campaigns.

The 7th District is one of 30 House Districts represented by a Democrat in 2020 that voted for Donald Trump (R) in 2016.

As of late June, she had a roughly 10:1 advantage in cash on hand (only 5:1 edge in receipts to date BUT he had to go through a primary to advance)

Sidebar: Candidates for constitutional offices (basically federal + any office explicitly defined by a state constitution) receive what's called "lowest unit rate". In other words, they buy all their ads at the lowest price any advertiser received in the past year for the same time slot. (which is usually going to be, say, car dealership prices)

Is that law or common practice? Why wouldn't they get the going rate for that time slot?

And if it's law, I figure there'd be some way to have some dumb effery around that where a conservative/liberal owner offers someone a slot at some point in the year for, I dunno, $50, and then lets the favored campaign know about it before the other to fill up the slots

Federal law, has to do with FCC licensing, etc. It extends largely only to candidates, though parties can qualify in some scenarios. (i.e. it's for "hard money", PACs and other "soft money" don't get that bargain)

It's complex, and the bane of many a broadcasters existence

edit to add: I still use the old term "lowest unit rate" though I see where now the verbiage is "lowest unit charge". Same diff.

So after a little more than 10 years, my youngest step daughter (I still call them my step daughters even though I've been divorced from their mom for over 10 years) has started talking to me again. It brought tears to my eyes. Her mom filled her head with a bunch BS about me and my step daughter stopped all contact with me back in 2010. Her older sister, I've been in contact for the whole time, but, now that her sister is talking to me again, man it feels great.

We talked for a few hours, she apologized for what she did and I told her she didn't have to, she was in her early teens so I can totally understand all the emotions she was probably going through at the time. I'm just thankful she's back and she is doing great. Some positive stuff for once after one heck of a horrible summer and early fall.

Thanks, Jon. Being a VA race I don't really care about it that much, but found it interesting just how hard she's been advertising with the same...well, frankly boring commercial.* (I have seen no ads for any MD races.) But boring is better than hearing the jingles for F.H. Furr, or 50 Floors for the fifty billionth time, or about whatever the hell is going on down in Waldorf that has a guy humming along to the circus song (da da da dee da da da da WALDORF da da da dee da...) while animated people only slightly less disconcerting than the ones in the Rock Auto commercials bounce around.

* Spanberger reminds me of a college girlfriend a HS buddy had. We couldn't come up with anything stronger for our opinion of her than that she was "pleasant to look at." Not hot, not pretty, but pleasant. I can't decide if Spanberger is even at that level. Not by any means ugly, nice smile, what have you. But at the same time very meh.

I'm not sure if this should be in the random topic thread but here it goes:

Where should one go to get their Wills done? Can it be done online? Do I need to seek a lawyer close-by? I personally don't have complicated but I would like it in official writing.

I don't quite know where to put this (we have multiple political threads) since, IMO, it's not really political per se.

And I am NOT trying to start any sort of "post your own" deal, cause that's not really my point either.

Here's the basic social media post I saw making the rounds
Quote:
SOCIAL EXPERIMENT: Go to Donald Trump's page and see how many of your friends like it and go to Joe Biden page and see how many your friends like it. Then, copy and share.

My numbers (124-7) aren't the least bit surprising to me at all, but the extra bit I thought was interested was that basically 25% of my friends had liked one or the other. That felt super high vs what I'd guess is typical for FB overall. Honestly, my point in posting about it here was more along the lines of "that percentage thing is kinda interesting, might be interesting for some of the data driven types here"

10 for Trump, 13 for Biden.

My will and advance directive weren't especially complicated (but kids were younger then so we had to worry about some complexities there) but my wife and I wanted to speak to someone, ask questions etc. so we went to an attorney near by. Had the initial visitation, we did Q&A, she asked us to think about somethings etc. and gave us paperwork to fill out. Went back to give back paperwork, asked some final Q&A and then she emailed us final version to sign.

I think it was like $800 total.

$800!

All I really want in my will is that everything goes to my parents, and if they're dead it gets divided by my siblings, and if they're dead my stuff goes to my nieces/nephews. And if they're dead my stuff could to FOFC for all I care at that point. Maybe you could put a down payment on that aircraft carrier you always wanted.

Same, I think ours was between 2 and 3k. Of course, we have a full assortment of POA, LW, and 2 separate trusts.

There are an estimated 100B stars in the Milky Way galaxy. There are an estimated 200B galaxies in the universe.

Star Trek series is based in the Milky Way galaxy (except for one episode).

Star Wars is based in one galaxy.

There are 199,999,999,998 other galaxies to create stories for.

I wonder how much money is spent in the U.S. each year with the primary (real) goal of trying to assure someone of having an adequate number of pallbearers?

Ever since I started working from home back in March, I've been watching a bunch of train live cams on youtube. Never was interested in them before, but, I guess seeing little glimpses of the world I can't visit is a bit cathartic and I now want to visit Revelstoke BC when I get the chance.

Social media - especially Twitter - is such a never-ending flow of stories and comments that run the gamut from sad/outrageous to funny/sarcastic that I am often thrown off-guard as to how to take a particular comment or headline I read. I guess the back-and-forth/whiplash of emotions you see every few seconds is a bit overwhelming to immediately discern or it's hard to re-adjust my mindset from one end of the spectrum to the other.

Case in point: a headline that popped up on my phone a couple of minutes ago reads, "Weeks after his wife's death, Kentucky man wins $200K off lottery ticket." And my first thought was, I wonder what the angle on this story is - the dude is really, really lucky?

I posted that I voted on social media, and said 'you know who I voted for', and if you knew me, you would know. A friend, who does know me, and knows exactly who I voted for, trolled me by posting a fucking trump gif, and now everyone thinks I voted for trump. I now know two things. One, the people who don't pay any attention to me or what I post at all, and two, who still supports that douche. Good grief. I will sit back and quietly laugh. The people who do know me, must be having quite a chuckle now, or they are fucking confused.

White old man. It makes sense that you're a Trump voter.

So I had an interesting day today. Got an email from one of my uncles asking if I'd heard anything from another uncle recently. I hadn't, and neither had my mom, who is still at my house recovering from her surgery. We checked Facebook, and the last thing he posted was on the 4th. He hadn't responded to any calls or texts for several days, so we decided to drive down and pay him a visit. Me and my uncle live just outside of Austin, while the silent uncle lives south of San Antonio.

So my mom, my uncle, and I made the 85 mile trip to his place. He's known to sometimes take spontaneous camping trips, but usually tells people before he goes. We get there, and both his cars are still parked outside.

My mom went to the barns to look, while my uncle and I checked the trailer. The door was unlocked. We find him on the floor next to his bed, with very labored breathing and non-responsive. I call 911 and then held my uncle's hand and talked to him telling him help was on the way for the longest 5 minutes of my life until the paramedics showed up.

The paramedics get there, and do their assessment stuff, some of them working on him while others were asking us questions about his medical history/when was the last time anyone had talked to him/etc. I find his phone, and when I was looking at the calls and texts, he had apparently been on the floor since the 11th.

They get him to the hospital and they don't know the root cause yet. Just that they found he has pneumonia and is bad shape. He's still in the ER, supposedly being moved to ICU later.

That's been my day today. Time for vodka.
