Grocers Chill LaVergne's Hot Streak
Friday, April 18th, 1975: The Portland Grocers got more than a 3-2 victory over Spring today at Grocers Park. They put an end to Robby LaVergne's 20-game hitting spree by holding him without a hit in 5 at-bats. But it was no big deal to the Lions shortstop.

LaVergne seemed to feel more for his team than himself.

"I had some great looks at some pitches that I should have hit. I missed some that I shouldn't have swung at. All in all, I wasn't much help with the bat today."

This year LaVergne is batting .475 with 1 home run and 12 RBIs.

April's Best RL Hurler is Twombly
Thursday, May 1st, 1975: The pick for the Republic League's best pitcher in April is relief specialist, Eugene Twombly. The Cleveland pitcher compiled a great month to take home the award.

"I just go out there and try and get the job done," Twombly told the press. "Things worked out real well last month and I appreciate the recognition."

The 36-year-old reliever threw 14.1 innings in 15 relief appearances as he piled up 12 saves, 13 strikeouts, and notched a 2-1 record and 1.88 ERA for the month.

Gómez Chosen April's Best CL Hurler
Thursday, May 1st, 1975: Carlos Gómez has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Clowns bullpen ace collected 8 saves and 9 strikeouts in 14 innings, holding the opposition to a .200 average and posting a 2.57 ERA and a 3-0 record.

RL's Premier Batter Picked
Thursday, May 1st, 1975: Robby LaVergne battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 26-year-old LaVergne told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, LaVergne hit .458 with 1 home run, 18 RBIs and scored 31 runs.

Sosa Cops CL Batter of the Month Honors

Thursday, May 1st, 1975: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 33-year-old José Sosa put together a solid offensive month for Washington and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .336 with 7 home runs, 19 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Thursday, May 1st, 1975: Craig McNeely was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 24-year-old center fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 28 games McNeely batted .314 for Ann Arbor, slapping 38 hits in 121 at-bats with 5 home runs, drove in 25 runs and scored 20 times.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Thursday, May 1st, 1975: León Ruíz earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Boston right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Ruíz hit .286 with 6 home runs, 32 RBIs and 14 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

The first FOOL-X No hitter since 1973! The last No-hitter was from... the same guy, Allen Hansen!

Surf Hansen Fires No-Hitter

Saturday, May 3rd, 1975: It was a fantastic day for Allen Hansen of the Virginia Beach Surf and a lousy day for the New York Legends. His pitching artistry completely befuddled and bewildered them in the 6-0 win. When it was over he was credited with one of the rarer feats in baseball -- a no-hitter.

"The ball was moving and darting, and best of all, going where I wanted it to go." Hansen rang up 9 strikeouts and allowed 2 walks while shutting New York down at Field of the Surf.

This year Hansen has a 2-4 mark in 7 starts with a 4.69 ERA. He has given up 48 hits in 48 innings, struck out 45 and issued 10 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .257 batting average against him.

Sosa Swings for the Cycle
Sunday, May 4th, 1975: José Sosa of the Washington Freedom touched all the bases today at Clown Car in the 8-6 victory over Indianapolis, hitting for the cycle. He teed off on Clowns pitching for a single, double, triple and a home run. The feat is rare in baseball as it requires a game of no fewer than four hits and the unusual combination of a home run, which requires a batter to hit for some power -- and a triple, which requires a batter to have both speed on the basepaths -- and a favorable fall of the ball.

"The hardest part was the triple," confessed Sosa, "A lot has to go right for you to get a triple. It is real easy to get greedy trying to stretch a double and get thrown out. It's really hard to get a three-bagger." He finished his special day with 4 hits in 4 at-bats, 3 runs batted in, 2 runs scored and a place in the record book.

J. Sosa hit a two-run home run off J. Alfonso in the 1st, hit an RBI double in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, tripled in the 6th and walked in the 8th.

In 32 games this season Sosa has batted at a .364 pace with 47 hits and 11 home runs.

Naps O'Reilly Blanks Lions
Thursday, May 8th, 1975: Sometimes even Tom O'Reilly of Cleveland isn't sure which pitcher will show up when he takes the mound.

"I've been good sometimes and bad sometimes," he said. This time he looked good and made the Spring Lions look bad, blanking them by the score of 8-0.

O'Reilly tossed a 2-hit shutout against them, totaling 4 strikeouts and giving up 1 walk.

Checking out his stats for the year, O'Reilly has racked up 4 wins and 2 losses in 8 starts, 4.58 ERA and struck out 30 batters in 55 innings.

Meilaart Homers 3 Times Against Virginia Beach
Monday, May 19th, 1975: Today was a special one for Joachim Meilaart of the New York Legends as he slammed three home runs in the 10-9 win over the Virginia Beach Surf.

"Lately, I been uppercutting the ball too much. I would hit it hard, but they just went sky high and stayed in the ballpark," he said to sportswriters after the game. "No big long outs for me in this game... I leveled out my swing and connected on the sweet spot three times. I knew they were gone the minute I hit 'em."

The New York first baseman had quite a game at Legends Ballpark as he collected 3 hits in 4 at-bats, drove in 7 and scored 3 runs.

J. Meilaart flied out in the 1st, hit a three-run home run off A. Hansen in the 3rd, walked in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off M. Brown in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off L. Sánchez in the 9th.

Presently Meilaart is batting .282 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs. He has played in 46 games and scored 35 times.

I don't have the words to describe what happened in this game.....

Carney Sensational, 6-7

Wednesday, May 21st, 1975: All game long Virginia Beach's Bill Carney was rattling the walls at Legends Ballpark and banging out base hits against the New York Legends. When the dust finally settled on the diamond, he had a 6-hit day and the Surf had a 31-12 victory.

Speaking with reporters after his standout performance, the 28-year-old shortstop said, "Get 6 hits, win a ballgame, it's nice. I could get used to this."

B. Carney singled in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off R. Austen in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, grounded out in the 4th, singled in the 5th, hit a three-run home run off J. Whitaker in the 6th, walked in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

Carney is hitting .323 this year with 3 home runs and 33 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .389, 20 walks and scored 42 times.

From the same 31-12 game....

3-HR Binge for Guerrero Against Virginia Beach
Wednesday, May 21st, 1975: Three home runs don't always equal a win. Most of the time it does, but not today at Legends Ballpark. The Virginia Beach Surf beat the odds and also beat Máximo Guerrero and the New York Legends 31-12. The hot-hitting left fielder had an historic day at the plate with three home runs, 4 hits in 5 at-bats, 6 RBIs and 3 runs scored, but no victory.

"This game is special for me. It's an individual accomplishment," he said. "As a team we didn't have a good day, but the three homers make it better."

M. Guerrero hit a two-run home run off A. Ortíz in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off G. Moreno in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off G. Moreno in the 9th.

So far this year Guerrero is hitting .294 with 20 home runs.

Relief Star Wins RL Top Pitcher Honors
Sunday, June 1st, 1975: Brit Barber was the anchor in the Ann Arbor bullpen last month and snatched up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors for May. The 30-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 15.1 innings over 15 relief appearances and collected a 1-1 record with 15 strikeouts and 13 saves while etching his 0.59 ERA.

In 1975 Barber has totaled 23 relief appearances, worked 24.1 innings, struck out 20 and issued 5 walks. He has 17 saves and fashioned a 2.22 ERA and a 1-2 won-lost mark.

Butler Garners CL #1 Pitcher Award
Sunday, June 1st, 1975: Chandler Butler nailed down May's Continental League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Washington to get a deal done before the 35-year-old becomes a free agent.

Butler seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 3-1 record, reeled off 33 strikeouts, worked 49 innings and held batters to a .251 average for the month as he posted a 1.47 ERA.

This season Butler has compiled a 6-3 mark with a 2.67 ERA in 12 starts.

Anderson Snags Rookie of Month Trophy
Sunday, June 1st, 1975: Drew Anderson was named the top rookie in the Republic League for his outstanding performance last month.

Ruíz Voted May's Rookie Award

Sunday, June 1st, 1975: Youngster León Ruíz emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Boston deserved the honor, batting .327 with 6 home runs and 23 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Ruíz enjoy the limelight.

In 55 games this season Ruíz has compiled a .307 batting average with 62 hits and 12 home runs. He has also scored 29 times and knocked in 55 runs.

RL's #1 Batter Announced
Tuesday, July 1st, 1975: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Claudio Estrada. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as Ann Arbor's left fielder pinned down the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .281 in June collecting 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

So far this season Estrada is hitting .254 with 22 home runs, 66 RBIs and 62 runs scored. He has 82 hits in 323 at-bats and a .346 OBP.

Esteban Ibarria is June's #1 Hitter in CL
Tuesday, July 1st, 1975: Esteban Ibarria was at the top of the hit parade in the Continental League throughout June. For the outstanding month, the talented Boston shortstop was chosen the Batter of the Month.

He compiled a .379 average with 39 hits, 1 home run, 21 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

This season Ibarria is batting .322 with 109 hits, 2 home runs, 42 RBIs, .406 OBP and has scored 71 runs.

June's Premier Rookie Named by CL

Tuesday, July 1st, 1975: António Méndez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Indianapolis hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .277 average with 28 hits, 9 home runs and 24 RBIs.

This year Méndez is hitting .260, produced 62 RBIs and 23 home runs, scored 60 times and gotten on base at a .327 rate.

He finished the game with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk in a solid outing.

On his stats sheet for the year Maeda shows a 9-7 record, 24 starts, 147.2 innings, 120 strikeouts and a 5.42 ERA.

RL Top Pitcher for August Picked
Monday, September 1st, 1975: When Mauro Morales takes the mound, a Spring victory is usually the result. That was the the case in August.

Arai CL Winner, Top Hurler in August
Monday, September 1st, 1975: The Continental League Pitcher of the Month honor has been given to Hirohisa Arai of Mexico City for a superlative month.

"I actually never wanted to be a pitcher," Arai told reporters when asked who he credits for his pitching ability. "I was an outfielder until high school and on the third day of tryouts my coach came up and said, 'Son you couldn't hit a lick even if we put it on a tee for ya.' Well, that ticked me off, so I decided if I couldn't hit I wanted to make sure no one else could either and so here I am."

It all turned out for the best as the Mexico City starter notched a 5-0 record with a 2.67 ERA last month. He made 5 starts and struck out 26 in 33.2 innings.

In 28 starts this season Arai has notched a 14-7 record and a 2.49 ERA.

Hernández's 24-Game Hit Streak Ends
Wednesday, September 3rd, 1975: Jesús Hernández's hit streak ended at 24 games today as the Ticklers shortstop went 0-for-4 in a 13-0 loss to the Freedom.

"It's one of those things," Hernández said. "It just didn't happen. I guess it was my day not to get a hit."

Hernández is batting .297 this season in 142 games with 14 home runs, 71 RBIs and 72 runs scored. He has 156 hits in 526 at-bats.

Mauro Morales Reaches 300 Wins
Saturday, September 6th, 1975: What would you do after you had just won your 300th game? Run around Ann Arbor Grounds doing cartwheels, jumping for joy and waving to the crowd? Well, maybe you and I would do that, but not Mauro Morales -- that's not his way.

After he notched number 300, the 34-year-old Spring hurler spoke to the press like he always has -- in a soft, quiet voice. He wasn't doing any cartwheels or even anything resembling a jump for joy. "Obviously it feels very good," Morales commented. "To win this many games, you've got to have a lot of help."

Morales got his milestone victory by beating the Ann Arbor Wolverines 8-3. He held them to 5 hits in 7.2 innings and rung up 7 strikeouts with 2 walks.

After sharing his thoughts with the press, he went to the clubhouse. There he was greeted by the guys who had helped him get #300. His teammates showered him with champagne and then gave him a rousing round of applause. That got to him -- for the first time today, Morales's face broke into a big smile.

Thus far in his career, Morales has worked 4013.1 innings with 3794 strikeouts en route to a 300-132 record. The 34-year-old also has a 2.98 ERA.

Butler Blanks Boston
Sunday, September 7th, 1975: It was not a good day at the plate for Resettlers hitters. Most of them came up empty against Chandler Butler of the Washington Freedom. He held them to 2 hits and blanked Boston 9-0. Butler also chalked up 8 strikeouts and 2 walks in the game at Resettlers Ballpark.

So far this season Butler has 13 wins and 9 losses and a 3.14 ERA.
