300 Homers for Salas
Saturday, April 17th, 1982: The London Bishops defeated the Washington Freedom 8-4 yesterday in a game that featured José Salas's 300th career home run.

In the clubhouse, the Bishops shortstop spoke about the milestone achievement. "To be honest, I don't even remember my first home run," he said. "But this one I don't think I'll forget. Who knows if I'll hit another hundred, or fifty, or even ten?"

On his historic day, Salas banged out 1 hit in 4 at-bats and scored 2 runs with 3 RBI.

In his career Salas has compiled a .282 batting average and collected 2017 hits, 300 home runs and 1220 RBIs.

Nixon Belts Bunch of Base Hits
Monday, April 19th, 1982: It was a sensational day at the plate for Artie Nixon as he led the charge to a 19-9 win over the Clowns.

The Balzac right fielder was pure misery for the Indianapolis pitching staff. He left them shellshocked with 6 hits in 6 at-bats in an explosive display of hitting.

The manager for the Clowns told BNN reporters after the game, "Nixon put the ball into play. He really hit it hard. When you do that, you've got a pretty good chance to do some damage. And that's what happened. I feel like we threw some pretty good pitches, but he just put some good swings on the ball."

A. Nixon singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit a two-run home run off I. Ono in the 4th, hit a three-run home run off J. Pérez in the 5th, hit an RBI double in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

Nixon is batting .400 with 7 home runs and 22 RBIs this season.

Boulanger Collects Hit Number 2000
Saturday, April 24th, 1982: The box score from yesterday's game will show that New York beat the Spring Lions, 13-3. It will also show that first baseman Michel Boulanger went 2-for-4 for the Legends. It will not show, however, that Boulanger reached the 2000-hit mark for his career.

The 32-year-old Boulanger reflected on the achievement after the game. He mused: "In one respect, it's a real milestone, I guess. Yet, it's just a base hit like any other base hit."

During his career Boulanger has notched 2001 hits and a .312 average with 438 home runs and 1397 RBIs.

Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Saturday, May 1st, 1982: Michael Butler is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Maricopa hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .308 average with 32 hits, 10 home runs and 33 RBIs.

April's Premier CL Rookie Named
Saturday, May 1st, 1982: Wade Haggart let his numbers do the talking in April. The Washington Freedom catcher logged a .308 average as he laid claim to the Continental League Rookie of the Month Award.

He tallied 32 hits, 2 home runs, drove in 21 runs and scored 12 runs during his remarkable stretch.

Hit #2000 for Clowns Guevara
Monday, May 24th, 1982: For José Guevara, it was a red-letter day. The Indianapolis Clowns catcher slapped his 2000th career hit. That his team defeated the London Bishops, 7-6, made it even sweeter.

His manager paid tribute to Guevara after the game: "I've followed José since he came into the league," he said. "Fine ballplayer. Fine work ethic. I'm not surprised by what he's achieved."

The 35-year-old Guevara finished the day with 3 hits in 5 at-bats.

Lifetime Guevara has played in 1738 games, batted .294 with 350 home runs and 2001 base hits.

Guerrero Socks it to Cleveland 3 Times
Saturday, May 29th, 1982: Ignacio Guerrero penned his name in the record books after an explosive home run spree against Cleveland. He's now among the select sluggers who have hit three home runs in a game.

In his record-setting day at Legends Ballpark the New York center fielder went 3-4 with 7 RBIs and scored 4 times in the 19-10 victory over the Naps.

"It was just one of those days," he said in the postgame interview. "I don't know how to explain it. I'm just putting a good swing on the ball."

"Guerrero was locked in," the Cleveland skipper said. "We made some pretty good pitches. Those first two homers were exactly where the pitcher wanted to put them. He's pretty hot right now. You've just got to tip your hat."

I. Guerrero grounded out in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off C. Johnson in the 4th, hit a three-run home run off C. Johnson in the 5th, walked in the 6th and hit a three-run home run off J. López in the 7th.

Currently Guerrero is batting .216 with 46 hits and 13 home runs. He has knocked in 41 runs and scored 43 times.

Helms 6-6 Against Indianapolis
Sunday, May 30th, 1982: It was a good day for the Resettlers at Clown Car as they clipped the Indianapolis Clowns 20-4. It was tremendous day for Jerry Helms, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 6 for 6 barrage.

The Boston right fielder told reporters after his big 6-hit performance, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."

J. Helms hit a solo-shot off G. Suárez in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit a two-run home run off D. Acevedo in the 9th.

So far this year in 56 games Helms is hitting .323 with 7 home runs, 34 RBIs and 45 runs scored.

Urbina Selected CL's Best Pitcher
Tuesday, June 1st, 1982: In May, José Urbina tore through the Continental League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 24 years old.

CL's #1 Batter Chosen
Tuesday, June 1st, 1982: Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Tommy Tizzard can still get it done in FOOL-X. In fact, the 36-year-old right fielder for Mexico City was named the Continental League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In May he batted .342 with 9 home runs, 26 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

To date this season Tizzard is hitting .342 with 18 home runs.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Tuesday, June 1st, 1982: Youngster Michael Butler emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Maricopa deserved the honor, batting .302 with 3 home runs and 17 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Butler enjoy the limelight.

Currently Butler is batting .305 with 13 home runs, 50 RBIs and 38 runs scored.

Haggart Hauls in May's Best Rookie Award
Tuesday, June 1st, 1982: The most productive Continental League rookie in May was Washington's catcher Wade Haggart.

Last month he played in 28 games and hit .343 with 7 doubles, 1 triple, and 1 home run. Haggart also scored 15 times and drove in 11 runs.

This season Haggart has hit at a .325 clip with 32 RBIs, 3 home runs and 27 runs scored.

Bishops Duval Dominates Freedom
Monday, June 7th, 1982: "He was too darn good for us today," grumbled the Washington manager after his club suffered a 5-0 shutout at the hands of Mathieu Duval of the London Bishops. He held the Washington Freedom scoreless in a 2-hit whitewash.

Duval was in a zone of his own most of the game and finished with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in a strong outing.

In a postgame quote his own skipper added, "He pitched his butt off, had good velocity, good movement and had those guys off balance. Mathieu did a whale of a pitching job."

This season Duval has a 4-4 mark in 16 starts with a 4.34 ERA. He has given up 107 hits in 105.2 innings, struck out 71 and issued 29 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .265 batting average against him.

2000 Hits for Ibarria
Tuesday, June 8th, 1982: Esteban Ibarria's bat made good contact with the ball as he has many times in his career, but this time it added his name to an elite list of players with 2000 hits. The Boston shortstop went to the plate 5 times and racked up 3 hits to gain the honor. But the Resettlers couldn't pull off a win -- they fell to the Washington Freedom, 12-6.

In 1663 career games Ibarria has batted .305 with 2000 hits with 372 doubles, 90 triples and 50 home runs. He has also collected 702 RBIs and scored 1068 runs.

Only the second player in FOOL-X history with 3000 hits!!

Cook Reaches 3000 Milestone
Monday, June 14th, 1982: The Cleveland 8-3 loss to New York wasn't all bad. Something good came out it, at least for Ryan Cook. As a consolation prize he got the 3000th hit of his career. The veteran Naps designated hitter went 1-for-3 in the game and added his name to the coveted 3000-hit club. He was given a five-minute ovation by the crowd, which included his wife and family and quite a few former Naps teammates.

"I could have scripted it better," Cook commented to the press after the game, "a win would have made it a lot more enjoyable. But what the hey... hit #3000 ain't so bad."

Cook is batting .303 lifetime with 3000 hits, 676 doubles, 128 triples, 465 home runs, 1643 RBIs to date. He has also scored 1957 runs.

Yamashita Raps 3 HR Against Surf
Monday, July 5th, 1982: Toshikuni Yamashita, the Ann Arbor third baseman, put on a dazzling display of power today at Ann Arbor Grounds against the Virginia Beach Surf. In the 15-3 victory Yamashita penned his name into the record books, slamming a trio of home runs in one of baseball's finest single day efforts.

What a display it was -- three home runs, 3 hits in 5 at-bats, 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored. It certainly was a day for the league record books.

"He can hit them out anywhere, right, center, left, it doesn't matter," the Virginia Beach manager said. "He's super strong and stays on the ball so good."

Talking about his theory of hitting after the game, Yamashita said, "Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off... the right pitch will come and when it does, be prepared to run the bases... or trot around the bases... like I did today."

So says the latest person to hit three homers in a game.

T. Yamashita struck out in the 1st, hit a three-run home run off J. Meza in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off N. Yamaguchi in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off D. Scott in the 8th.

This season Yamashita is batting at a .313 clip with 26 home runs and 86 RBIs.

3 Home Runs for Boulanger
Wednesday, July 7th, 1982: Michel Boulanger of New York was on fire with three home runs in the 13-8 win over Ann Arbor at Legends Ballpark.

"The first two I got all of them and it was no doubt they were gone. The last one I got lucky. It seemed like the wind helped it a little. Old Mother Nature helped me get into the record books."

For the game Boulanger was 3 for 5 with 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

M. Boulanger hit a two-run home run off M. Trudeau in the 1st, grounded out in the 2nd, grounded out in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off J. Moreno in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off J. Cannell in the 7th.

This year Boulanger is hitting .248 with 21 home runs.

July's Top Starter is De Jesús
Sunday, August 1st, 1982: When António De Jesús takes the hill, he's a good bet to nail down the victory for the Ann Arbor Wolverines. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 5-1 mark and 2.11 ERA in 7 starts. In 47 innings, he fanned 35 and walked 16.
That's why he was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Republic League.

This year De Jesús has worked 173.2 innings with 129 strikeouts en route to a 11-10 record and a 4.30 ERA.

My team is playing ping-pong with the standings. Looks like the pitchers are doing well but we're not getting enough pop in the lineup. I've got a couple more hitters ready to move up next season, maybe should have moved them up this season even as good as the veterans looked this offseason.
