FOOL 2090 Regular Season Thread

Three more hours!

Is it just me or does it seem awfully quiet in here? You guys need to make more noise, especially since I will be at my job tonight, as usual.

Okay, I have felt Hammersmith has had a pretty good team the past few seasons, since our pitching developed, and Alan's grading system has seemed to bear that out. Unfortunately, the results on the field have been lacking. Part of it is that the entire RL seems to be very strong, sporting several "A" total team ratings the past few years. So it's very difficult to make a prediction without getting deeper into the teams.

My main issue last season was offense, and I think I have done some things to move the lineup in the right direction, with the signing of four key hitters (CF Jorge Gil, 2B Ricardo Sanchez, and high CON players at 3B and C). I did let Tulk go and my starting 3B (I forget his name, but he was a mostly POW, light CON guy). I have sacrificed some POW for CON and EYE on this year's team, so we will have to see how that works.

I also think my pitching was hurt by going with an 11 man staff last year, forcing me to push up most pitchers Pull settings. This year, there will be more depth in the Hammersmith pen, which should allow for keeping pitchers fresher.

But it's still going to be one heck of a fight in this league. There are way too many terrific teams in the RL.

Good luck to everyone this season.

I've been impatiently waiting for this allll day!

I'm gonna call Noblesville to win tonight for the CL.
In the RL Brunswick's pitching is awesome but I'm gonna say that Hartford is much more well rounded. And Colorado is right in there with them.

Good luck to all!!!

Stover Outstanding, No-Hits Assassins
Thursday, April 27th, 2090: There was magic on the mound today at Assasins Ballpark as Terry Stover of the Baltimore Charm no-hit the Apex Assassins 1-0. He held them spellbound and hitless in a masterful display of pitching.

After the game he said, "It was like I was in a dream. The ball just went right where I wanted it to."

In his mound masterpiece Stover rang up 2 strikeouts and issued 4 walks.

RL Announces Best Pitcher for April
Monday, May 1st, 2090: Alberto Pérez has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Hooligans bullpen ace collected 1 save and 14 strikeouts in 16 innings, holding the opposition to a .094 average and posting a 0.56 ERA and a 4-0 record.

Millers Rawlings April's Top Hurler
Monday, May 1st, 2090: In April, Walt Rawlings tore through the Continental League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 24 years old.

The young Noblesville starter posted a 5-0 mark and an ERA of 1.59 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 34 innings he collected 32 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .210 average.

RL Batter of the Month Honors to Sánchez
Monday, May 1st, 2090: Ricardo Sánchez battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 32-year-old Sánchez told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Sánchez hit .404 with 6 home runs, 20 RBIs and scored 24 runs.

Thirkettle Wins CL Batter of the Month
Monday, May 1st, 2090: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 31-year-old Bert Thirkettle put together a solid offensive month for Noblesville and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .349 with 4 home runs, 12 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Monday, May 1st, 2090: Roberto González earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Ann Arbor shortstop might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

González hit .289 with 5 home runs, 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Juárez Picked CL's Top Newcomer
Monday, May 1st, 2090: Alfonso Juárez gets his bat on the ball fast. The 26-year-old rookie snapped out 22 hits and a .310 average to capture April's Continental League Rookie of the Month honors.

Last month the Noblesville first baseman piled up no home runs, 6 RBIs, scored 8 times and had 1 walk for a .347 on-base percentage.

#300 for Larson
Thursday, May 4th, 2090: "I wasn't trying to hit a homer. I just wanted to make contact."
That's what Roy Larson told reporters after he made baseball history today at Sony Park. The prolific slugger belted home run #300 in the Tokyo Cyclones 3-0 victory over the Baltimore Charm.

The standout first baseman collected 1 hit in 4 at-bats with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

"I guess this puts me in baseball's elite," said Larson. "I don't feel any different. I probably should, but I don't. Still, it is a nice achievement. I did get a little excited, didn't I?"

Larson has a career .285 average with 1888 hits, including 345 doubles, 23 triples and 300 homers, collected 1068 RBIs, scored 862 runs and compiled a .330 OBP.

Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Thursday, June 1st, 2090: Immeghar Hasnuu is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Toronto hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .328 average with 40 hits, 8 home runs and 26 RBIs.

So far this season Hasnuu is hitting .313 with 11 home runs, 37 RBIs and 46 runs scored. He has 67 hits in 214 at-bats and a .376 OBP.

Hogeda Hurls Shutout
Wednesday, June 7th, 2090: "Jorge Hogeda is really a good pitcher when he throws strikes early in the count," said his manager after the Halifax hurler tossed a complete game 2-hit shutout against the Baltimore Charm.

"I went right after each hitter, trying to get ahead in the count," said Hogeda. "I wanted them to swing the bats and keep my pitch count down. It worked. I felt strong the whole game, even in the last two innings."

Hogeda walked 2 and struck out 7 in the 5-0 victory.

So far this year Hogeda has a 5-3 record with a 3.39 ERA.

RL's Premier Starter is López
Saturday, July 1st, 2090: Claudio López nailed down June's Republic League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Ann Arbor to get a deal done before the 32-year-old becomes a free agent.

López seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 4-1 record, reeled off 25 strikeouts, worked 42.2 innings and held batters to a .203 average for the month as he posted a 1.05 ERA.

So far this year López has compiled a 8-4 record with a 2.68 ERA.

Hogeda #1 CL Pitcher in June
Saturday, July 1st, 2090: The Halifax Winter Wolves celebrated today after the news filtered through the clubhouse that Jorge Hogeda had been selected as June's Continental League Pitcher of the Month. Hogeda's zest for the game has been a frequent topic on the sports pages and his numbers of late have made his fans even more enthusiastic.

"Our coaching staff really helps me prepare well," Hogeda said, "and the fans feed off good pitching. Your pitches just seem to have that extra pop to them when the fans are behind you and you feel confident you can get outs."

Hogeda tossed 47.2 innings last month, holding opponents to a .221 average while striking out 40 batters. In 7 starting assignments he came away with a 6-1 record, putting together an ERA of 2.83.

This season Hogeda has a 9-4 record with a 3.48 ERA.

Paull Grabs RL Best Batter Award for June
Saturday, July 1st, 2090: Paul Paull picked up the top batter prize in the Republic League for June.

The Hartford center fielder hit .333 with 9 home runs, 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He also drew 11 walks to post an OBP of .403.

Hitting .279 to date, Paull has 14 home runs and 40 RBIs. He has played in 79 games.

Alfonso Romero Winner in Continental League
Saturday, July 1st, 2090: There's nothing like putting up good, solid numbers in the last year of your contract. Today Alfonso Romero helped his contract negotiations by nabbing June's Continental League Batter of the Month honors.

The Georgia left fielder put together a .333 batting average with 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

Someone will surely be opening up the vault this offseason if Romero continues at this brisk pace.

This year Romero is batting .323 with 13 home runs. He has scored 50 runs and driven in 57.

June's Best Rookie Trophy Awarded
Saturday, July 1st, 2090: Youngster Orlando Ornelas emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Hartford deserved the honor, batting .329 with 8 home runs and 19 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Ornelas enjoy the limelight.

This year Ornelas is batting .300 with 13 home runs and 33 RBIs.

Ohayashi Selected June's Top Newcomer
Saturday, July 1st, 2090: A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Yeijiro Ohayashi just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for June.

Over the past month the 25-year-old shortstop for Napa Valley hit .388 with 31 hits, 3 home runs and 15 RBI. He also logged 4 walks and compiled a .412 on-base percentage.

In this current campaign Ohayashi is hitting at a .285 clip with 7 home runs and 25 RBIs.

Number 300 for García
Saturday, July 1st, 2090: 300 home runs is a lot of home runs to hit. It's a number that very few players reach. Today Manny García became a member of that exclusive club. He belted it at Ann Arbor Grounds against the Rancheros. But sometimes milestone homers don't win the game. The powerful Ann Arbor right fielder got all of the headlines, but Colorado came away with the victory. They beat the Winged Lingerines 9-7.

During the postgame interview he told the press, "It's a big relief to get it over. I tried not to think about it, but it's kind of hard when you have a huge sign on the scoreboard staring at you every time you step up to the plate. The home run was nice, but I would have preferred to win the game."

His batting totals for the game showed 1 hit in 5 at-bats, 1 home run and 3 runs batted in.

The hardworking and dedicated García also said, "I'll celebrate a little with my family tonight but not too much. This is not the last home run I will hit. I think I have a lot baseball left in me and have other goals. I'll get back to work tomorrow."

In 1851 career games García has hit .313 with 2268 hits, 300 home runs, 1346 RBIs and scored 1383 runs.

Homer #300 for Noblesville's Thirkettle
Sunday, July 23rd, 2090: It was a great day for Bert Thirkettle, but not a good one for his Noblesville Millers. The 31-year-old catcher reached a personal milestone with his 300th career homer, but it wasn't enough to beat the Apex Assassins, who came away with a 8-6 victory. Thirkettle finished the day with 2 hits, 3 runs batted in and 1 run scored.

"Well, I've conceded the fact that you can't will yourself to hit a home run," he said. "I tried hard for the last few days. It was getting to be embarrassing with the crowd standing up every time I came to the plate."

His career numbers show Thirkettle is currently carrying a .290 lifetime batting average with 300 home runs and 1041 RBIs.

I really don't think so. There's nothing in the English language that would dictate separate syllables for an "au" combination.

Unless he is Hispanic? Or Polish?

Republic League Selects #1 Starter in July
Tuesday, August 1st, 2090: As Hayato Hagiwara hoisted up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy for July, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Hartford once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Hagiwara put pressure on the Harpooners to keep him around by posting a 4-0 record and an ERA of 1.35 over 33.1 innings last month. He also rolled up 21 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Hartford and to every other team in the league.

This season Hagiwara has compiled a 11-6 mark with a 3.46 ERA in 20 starts.

CL Picks July's Top Pitcher
Tuesday, August 1st, 2090: The elite pitcher this past month in the Continental League was Bernie Archdeacon of the Tokyo Cyclones. He stood head and shoulders above the rest, finishing July with an extraordinary 5-0 record and a 2.75 ERA.

The Cyclones star hurler made 5 starts and surrendered 34 hits in 36 innings. He struck out 24 and walked 11.

In 20 starts this year Archdeacon has posted 12 wins while suffering 6 losses. He has pitched 136 innings, allowed 144 hits, struck out 95 and has a 3.38 ERA.
