Hartford Hopeless Against Briggs
Wednesday, April 12th, 2119: After his 5-0 shutout win against the Harpooners, Dave Briggs said, "I went out there to try and eat up innings and help out our bullpen. I felt I had my good stuff... and it turned out my command was solid and my breaking balls were good."

They were better than good as the Hooligans pitcher put up 11 strikeouts, surrendered 1 walk, allowed 4 hits and kept the bullpen phone quiet all day long.

King Gets April's Top Pitcher Trophy
Monday, May 1st, 2119: This month when the Chico manager wrote the name "King" on the lineup card, he was pretty confident that he would get a good start out of him. Outing after outing in April Matt King took command and usually got the win.

He dominated with a 5-0 mark and 2.47 ERA in 6 starts, piling up 43.2 innings and 26 strikeouts and holding opposing teams to a .196 average.

For his superb performance King was named the Republic League Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

He showed no mercy as he finished the month with a .309 batting average, 7 home runs, 20 RBIs, and 20 runs scored.

CL's Top Hitter Named
Monday, May 1st, 2119: Martín Martínez battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Martínez hit .333 with 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 16 runs.

Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Monday, May 1st, 2119: Manabu Ishii was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old first baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 25 games Ishii batted .279 for Hartford, slapping 29 hits in 104 at-bats with 7 home runs, drove in 20 runs and scored 16 times.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Monday, May 1st, 2119: António Pinto's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Tokyo third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .220 with 1 double, no triples and 2 home runs. Pinto also scored 8 times and drove in 8 runs.

Napa Valley Blanked by Thurgood
Monday, May 29th, 2119: Sometimes even Roy Thurgood of Halifax isn't sure which pitcher will show up when he takes the mound.

"I've been good sometimes and bad sometimes," he said. This time he looked good and made the Napa Valley Winemakers look bad, blanking them by the score of 7-0.

Thurgood tossed a 2-hit shutout against them, totaling 4 strikeouts and giving up 1 walk.

This year Thurgood has compiled a 5-2 mark with a 3.97 ERA.

Tickner CL's #1 Pitcher in May

Thursday, June 1st, 2119: Youngster Manabu Ishii emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Hartford deserved the honor, batting .349 with 11 home runs and 31 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Ishii enjoy the limelight.

Thus far this year Ishii has hit .314 with 18 home runs and 51 RBIs.

Stein Voted May's #1 Newcomer
Thursday, June 1st, 2119: John Stein earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Tokyo catcher might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

So far this season Stein has hit .264 with 3 home runs, 15 RBIs and and scored 22 times.

Hartford Ishii Gets the Cycle
Saturday, June 24th, 2119: 4 hits is a great day for any player, but when they come in four different denominations, that's a cycle -- a rarity by baseball's standards. Manabu Ishii had a single, double, triple and home run for the Hartford Harpooners and led them to a 10-9 decision over Toronto at Harpooners Ballpark III with 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

M. Ishii singled in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, flied out in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 6th, hit a solo-shot off H. Jones in the 9th and tripled in the 11th.

So far this season, Ishii has recorded a .307 batting average with 91 hits, 21 home runs, 65 RBIs, 45 runs scored and a .350 OBP.

He's pretty strong, but he needs to either develop that eye a bit more, or start actually hitting up to his contact ability (or both) to be truly great.

González Nabs RL Monthly Rookie Award
Saturday, July 1st, 2119: Jorge González is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Hartford hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .240 average with 25 hits, 10 home runs and 27 RBIs.

Hitting .228 to date, González has 19 home runs and 62 RBIs. He has played in 79 games.

June's Best Rookie Named by CL

Last month the 26-year-old Apex catcher played in 20 games and hit .391 with 5 doubles, no triples and 1 home run. Marquis also scored 10 times and drove in 8 runs.

In 63 games this season Marquis is batting .286 with 53 hits and 3 home runs. He has scored 18 runs and driven in 21.

Number 300 for Velázquez
Wednesday, July 5th, 2119: The Hartford Harpooners defeated the Los Angeles Bruins 8-4 yesterday in a game that featured José Velázquez's 300th career home run.

In the clubhouse, the Harpooners center fielder spoke about the milestone achievement. "To be honest, I don't even remember my first home run," he said. "But this one I don't think I'll forget. Who knows if I'll hit another hundred, or fifty, or even ten?"

On his historic day, Velázquez banged out 2 hits in 5 at-bats and scored 2 runs with 1 run batted in.

In 1700 career games Velázquez has hit .275 with 1807 hits, 300 home runs, 1058 RBIs and scored 998 runs.

Wednesday, July 26th, 2119: "He's got a bunch of different arm angles and his ball was really moving," said the Los Angeles manager after watching Mario Gómez of the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines humiliate his club 5-0 in a fine 2-hit shutout.

"If I make good pitches, I'm going to get some outs," Gómez said after he befuddled the Bruins. "I was making good pitches the entire game."

In 21 starts this season Beacher has registered a 8-3 record and a 3.45 ERA.

15-K Masterpiece for Fletcher
Sunday, August 13th, 2119: Tom Fletcher of the Chico Rebels was something to behold at Rebels Ballpark. He was on fire and fanned 15 Winged Lingerines en route to a 6-2 victory. Fletcher shackled Ann Arbor on 3 hits and gave up no walks in an outstanding performance.

"That's as good as I've ever seen him throw," his manager said. "I've never seen so many bad swings in my life. These guys didn't have a chance."

Fletcher had very little to say to after the game. "We won and that's the bottom line. I had a good game. And we beat Ann Arbor."

The Ann Arbor manager wasn't too happy with the game. "He pitched a very good game. You have to tip your cap to him."

So far this season Fletcher has a record of 12-8 with 161 strikeouts and 35 walks in 167.2 innings and a 4.03 ERA.

15 strikeout games aren't that common in the league. Tom Fletcher was the first pitcher to strike out 15 in a game in the last 7 seasons. The last pitcher to do so was Halifax's Dave Briggs who struck out 16 in 2112.
