Friday, September 1st, 1995: George Wilson of Cumberland had an award-winning August as he took home the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Liriano Picks Up Best RL Batter Honors for August
Friday, September 1st, 1995: To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Bartolo Liriano. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as Virginia Beach's left fielder pinned down the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .398 in August collecting 9 home runs, 32 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

For the season Liriano has produced 162 hits in 481 at-bats for a .337 average with 34 home runs and gotten on base at a .472 clip.

CL Announces Outstanding Batter Award
Friday, September 1st, 1995: Pedro Moreno, the Chicago right fielder, certainly made a name for himself this past month. He banged out a .380 batting average with 38 hits, 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and scored 19 times.

That kind of hitting earned him the Continental League Batter of the Month honors for August.

This season Moreno has hit at a .320 clip and produced 107 RBI, 19 home runs and 93 runs.

Adjo Collects Hit Number 2500
Wednesday, September 6th, 1995: He made it!
Ichchaam Adjo got hit #2500! The Banana Sluggers center fielder got his milestone hit at Clown Car against Indianapolis. But it wasn't enough to bring home the victory. Havana was beaten by the Clowns 9-8.

Adjo's reaction to his accomplishment was nonchalant. He doffed his batting helmet to acknowledge the fans, who were chanting his name.

His manager said, "Ichchaam doesn't pay any attention to individual statistics, the only thing he cares about is winning. He will be more concerned that we lost the game."

Adjo finished the game with 1 hit in 4 at-bats.

Lifetime Adjo has connected for 650 home runs, hit .273 and driven in 1929 runs.

Hit #2000 for Rattlers Navarro
Tuesday, September 12th, 1995: What a day for Alfonso Navarro. The 33-year-old Maricopa shortstop reached the 2000-hit mark today and the Rattlers whipped the Cumberland Defenders 6-5.

Navarro told reporters, "It's good to finally get it. The closer you get to 2000, the harder it is to get there. Now the pressure is off and I can go back to just playing ball."

He went 2 for 4 in the game to reach the milestone.

During his career Navarro has chalked up 2001 hits and a .270 average with 443 home runs and 1449 RBIs.

I did not expect a repeat of last year's playoff visit, because Phillips (at 29, sadly) is already falling apart, right after signing his big contract; I let some good arms go in the pen without replacing them; I moved two relievers turned starters back to the pen to help shore up that area, forcing me to maybe start a rookie in the rotation who should have been in the pen or in AAA. All that said, I thought .500 was a decent goal.

Not so much.

At least I'll get a good pick for once.

Washington Defeats Balzac 3-2, Somers Nabs 300th Save
Thursday, September 21st, 1995: The Washington Freedom really celebrated their 3-2 victory over the Balzac Ticklers at The Tickle Trunk. Not only did the Freedom win the game, but reliever Joel Somers recorded his 300th-career save. The bullpen ace stopped Balzac on no runs and no hits in his 1 innings of work to seal the triumph.

"It's a pretty good milestone - It doesn't happen very often," Somers said. "I was out there when my teammates needed me 300 times and I'm real proud of that."

In his career Somers has 300 saves with a 97-60 record and a 2.98 ERA.

Indianapolis Over Balzac 11-2, 200-th Win for Rojas
Friday, September 22nd, 1995: His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Juan Rojas did something even better -- the 35-year-old Indianapolis Clowns star has now won 200 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at The Tickle Trunk by whipping the Balzac Ticklers 11-2, holding them to 6 hits in 6 innings while chalking up 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

In the postgame interview, the modest Rojas said, "It's special to win 200 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

Over the course of his career, Rojas has a won-lost record of 200 wins and 179 losses with 2342 strikeouts in 3257.1 innings pitched with a lifetime 4.02 ERA.

Combs Smashes 300th Homer
Saturday, September 23rd, 1995: There was a big sigh of relief by Chris Combs after he hit his 300th career homer. The Cleveland right fielder told BNN, "Whew. I'm glad it's over...now I can go back to just playing baseball."

It was quite a day for Combs. He got his name in the league record books, 1 hit, 1 run batted in, scored 1 run and his team, the Cleveland Naps beat the Maricopa Rattlers 11-3.

Combs knew it when he hit it. He raised his hands in the air, then ran the bases like a high school player clapping and grinning.

He told reporters in the post-game interview, "I was acting goofy running the bases... but it was my 300th home run."

"It was great," his manager said. "He stood there and watched it...we all did. You just felt it was coming...you just had a sense he would hit it soon. He has been having a lot of good at-bats. It was great to get it out of the way."

Looking at his career numbers, Combs has played in 1856 games with a .329 batting average. Among his 2326 hits are 336 doubles, 42 triples and 300 home runs. He also has scored 1165 runs and driven in 1342 runs.

Vaughn Finishes Off Legends 11-8 for 300th Save
Sunday, September 24th, 1995: Eugene Vaughn has joined elite company. The Portland Axemen reliever earned his 300th save in a 11-8 victory over the New York Legends at Legends Ballpark. The newest member of the 300 club told reporters after the game, "I get the ball and I try to win the game. When I get a save, my team wins and really that's all that matters. I'm happy to reach the milestone but it's just that. The more important part is that I've helped my club win." While picking up the save, Vaughn allowed no hits and no runs in 0.1 innings of work.

Despite the dejection of their team having lost the game, even a number of Legends fans were seen honoring Vaughn as they joined in the standing ovation as he recorded the final out on his historic save. "That was pretty special," he said. "Something I won't soon forget."

Career-to-date Vaughn has chalked up 300 saves with a 66 wins and 80 losses.

Over in the CL, Boston has a magic number of 1 to clinch homefield advantage, but the Resettlers and Terriers have a 3 game series to end the season.

These two teams will be very familiar with each other over the next 2 weeks!

Cleveland's García Gets 3000th Hit
Saturday, September 30th, 1995: Salvador García was bubbling over with joy, celebrating his 3000th hit in the Cleveland 6-2 victory over the Lions at Ballpark of Cleveland.

"I learned what hard work, focus, dedication, and opportunity can do. This is how it pays off."

The 38-year-old third baseman achieved that milestone with 4 hits in 5 at-bats to join the exclusive 3000-hit club.

His manager said, "Salvador plays the same every day and every inning -- with all his heart. That's why he's such a special player."

Looking at his career stats, García is batting .289 and has totaled 117 home runs.

It's been nearly a decade since the expansion.

I think it's fair to drop that tag now.

Congrats to the Playoff teams!
