2009 FOFC Hardcore League

We're back! This is the fourth year of the FOFC Hardcore League (The companion football league, FOFC Alternate Rules Football took a year off this year with me moving during fantasy draft time but here are the previous 3: 2007, 2006, 2005.). The league is a weekly H2H league rather than Roto and we try to get in a slow, live draft so you have time to think about your picks.

Previous Years: 2008, 2007, 2006

Who Can Join
Preference goes towards members who were in the league last year. Now through the evening of Tuesday Feb 17th, they are the only ones who can join. Anyone else is put on the waiting list.

However, there are always some who don't come back so there are open spots (there are already 4 inactive spots from last year open).

If you weren't in the league last year and want to get on the waiting list, put your name in now as it is first come, first served. Also, if your team went inactive in the past, you don't get let back in the league- sorry, but that's the rules as we try to keep an active league. The spots belonging to Lathum, Sublime 2, DeTox Rox, and TazFTW are open as they abandoned teams last year.

Travis, after last year, you'd better be back to defend the title after the whooping you put on the league

Signing Up
IF YOU ARE RETURNING, WHEN YOU SIGN UP, PUT A NUMBER NEXT TO YOUR NAME. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE ON THE WAITING LIST. I have saved a text file to my desktop with 12 numbers that will determine the draft order. I will take whatever the last number is.

Remember - if you're from last year, put your team name and number. I have a list of numbers on my desktop which is the draft order (no, if you pick 1, you don't pick 1st- you pick in whatever order #1 is on that list).

Rules

Draft Format

The draft will take place in this thread once the league has been set up. It is a snake draft. With a couple of name free agents out there, we're probably going to wait another week or two. If nothing changes, we'll start drafting the morning of Monday February 23rd.

There are 6 hour time limits between the hours of 8am CT and 10pm CT on weekdays. Hopefully we don't have to enforce this but we almost always have to a couple of times during the draft.

If you had more than an hour the previous night (the previous pick was made at 9pm), you get 1 hour in the morning (until 9am) to make your pick. If you had less than an hour, you have 2 hours in the morning (until 10am). We have to keep this moving and we need everyone checking every night and every morning if it's near their turn.

On weekends, we'll just go with a standard 6 hours with no morning/evening provision but let's try to keep things moving.

If there are problems in that you know your pick is coming up but you won't be online, submit a list either to myself or to a proxy drafter for you. Otherwise, you will get the next player on Yahoo's list. Maybe pick someone who is on the opposite end of the draft from you so that you likely won't be grabbing from the same pool of players anyways.

Opening Day is Apr 5th. If the draft is not complete by Thursday April 2nd at noon, we will have a quick live draft via AIM to complete the draft on Thursday April 2nd, starting at 7pm CT. Anyone who won't be able to make that will need to submit a list to me, a proxy, or have a proxy in chat (who is not in the league) to finish out their team.

If you miss more than 2 picks in the draft (i.e. time limit expired so a Yahoo rankings pick), particularly in the first 10 rounds, then you can be replaced as manager.

I hate to lay down some of these rules but we're going to be drafting over 250 players so we need to get it done in a timely fashion.

IF YOU CANNOT KEEP UP WITH THIS SCHEDULE, DO NOT JOIN.

Also, it's pre-draft so we have a week to decide to make any changes. Post any suggestions you're interested in here and we'll decide what to do.

I'd also like to be added to the waiting list. The guys in the FOFC Hockey League can vouch for my staying active all season long.

Psssst, that samifan is bad news. All those fantasy hockey teams and metroho will keep him way too busy to keep up a baseball team too.

Horrible horrible potential owner. Honest. I mean come on, he has Sean Avery on his team, what else can you say about the guy?

Crap, AHL points don't count do they?

Sorry, I'll stop thread jacking now, just really don't like Avery, heh.

I hate him, too, but I expect that he'll be back in the NHL and racking up PIMs in short order.

Teams have been put into post 2. If you have a spot from last year, join the league.

Any thoughts on rules? I try to make it so you can't take too much advantage of the rules. For instance, the 42 IP per week means you pretty much have to run out 6 starting pitchers- you can't just run out a couple of aces and some closers to scoop up some points.

I also try to make things balanced so pitchers and batters are fairly evenly balanced (tho pitcher inconsistency still makes picks more interesting).

The one thing I won't do, however, is make the league so large we're picking up the backup infielder off the Royals (that would be Willie Bloomquist, ugh) because the free agent pool is so bereft of talent. We still want good players on the team.

Ok, all that said- I'm open to change. Anyone with ideas on improving the rules or are we good to go?

I'm only on the wait list but I'll ask a question. What position eligibility requirements does the league use? Yahoo typically has options for 1 Game / 5 Game / 10 Game, meaning that if I own Adam Dunn and he plays 1B five times during the season, in our league he now qualifies as a 1B. Most leagues I've played in use 5 starts or 10 appearances, whichever comes first. Obviously position scarcity means players like Mark DeRosa are more valuable at 2B in your fantasy lineup than 3B and the league eligibility rules will have a hand in determining how much that factors into building a roster.

I thought the rules were fine last year. FA pool had a few gems if you were active enough to snag them.

It looks like Yahoo also uses the 5 starts/10 appearances rule. At the beginning of the season, you can see what people have and they don't lose a position from one year to the next- so you can only gain positions throughout the course of the season.

For example, Dunn is 1B/LF/RF (remember, we have individual OFs- gives more value to CFs since it's harder to find good ones) whereas DeRosa is 2B/3B/LF/RF. You'll be able to see these things on the league page. It's a slow live, draft (see the draft section) so you'll be able to take some time drafting.

Yeah, I thought we had a pretty good balance. You could keep 2 pitchers on the bench for guys you wanted to keep with bad matchups and then 3 bench hitters, but you had to make some tough decisions about who to keep and there were some guys to get out there.

The three of you on the waiting list can join up with team names and numbers (please make a new post). Anyone else wanting in (from last year) or on the waiting list?

Ramzavail- you're up for a team. Make a new post with a team name and number.

The three who were active at the end of last year and haven't joined have been notified of the new thread. They have until the end of today to join up. As of midnight eastern tonight, if they haven't joined, their spots are open (tho they can claim them if they claim the spots before anyone else).

Anyone who has a number up on the draft board, join the league in Yahoo.

DeToxRox, Sublime 2 - you guys are on a waiting list until Friday. If the league isn't filled by then, then you get spots (in that order, DTR then S2). However, not until.

Lastly- review how this works. You have to be able to check your computer a couple of times daily for 2 or 3 straight weeks (or submit lists). If you can't do that, then don't join. If you miss more than 2 picks, you run the risk of being replaced.

I'm back in...hopefully I'll have another pitcher who sucks in April and dominates later in the year again (see: C.C. Sabathia's 2008 season).

I don't know how you guys have kept track of all picks in the past, but may I recommend a shared, public Google spreadsheet which we can all contribute to once the draft begins?

You can actually enter picks in Yahoo as you go along now. We used to use a spreadsheet but now we can do that. Also, all picks are made in the thread so there's a "record".

Thanks, I wasn't aware that we can enter picks into Yahoo. That should help keep track of everything.

The best part is that it updates the pool so you can see who is left (well, based on last years stats, Yahoo rank, or Yahoo o-rank)

CU Tiger, you're in.

CU Tiger, Ramzavail, PackerFanatic- make a post with a team name and number left (6, 10, 11, 12 are left).

Everyone join the league in Yahoo. I'd love to get this all straightened out by the end of the week. We could start the slow, live draft with no time limit until Monday- get a couple of cheap picks in ahead of schedule, maybe.

Ok, I got the last number on the board (12). I'll be updating the draft order shortly. Here is the list of numbers:

11
1
7
8
3
12
6
5
9
4
2
10

There are still 2 who haven't joined the league in Yahoo. Please do so today.

Nietzsche's Ubermen (LastWhiteSoxFanStanding)
Blacksburg Transit (Toddzilla)

I want to make sure we have the league squared away today and set before the weekend.

Using the entire ML, we should at least go to 16 teams, if not more.
