I vote to keep the rules as they are now. Everyone knew the rules going into the draft and we all knew how much time we had until Opening Day. I don't see any reason to change them mid-draft.

Autopick (Toddzilla)

10.3 RF Hunter Pence, Hou

At least the good news is that he could run an OF of Either in LF, Rios in CF, and Pence in RF and it's not an extra player who can't be a starter

Travis, MizzouRah, Ramzavail, myself due up

SI

Frankly, most of the guys at the top of the list who have been passed up are bargains now: Atkins, Zimmerman, Bruce- all good value picks

Yeah, I agree, I was just trying to point out that it's not like his pick being autodrafted screwed his team over.

Assuming he doesn't go down to injury I'm reading 160-180, but worst case is that I should be able to round out the rest of my staff by the time he hits that limit. Sounds like they're going to pitch count him more so each start so that they're not without him around the end of the season so a bit less bang each week maybe, but hopefully still throwing during our playoffs at the very least.

Updated Yahoo and thread thru 10.5

Ramzavail, myself, CleBrownsfan, and samifan24 due up tonight or tomorrow morning by 10am. I'm probably heading to sleep here pretty soon so I will probably hold things up later on tonight if Ramzavail picks.

Atkins is now at the top of the list.

Okay quick question i see there is a minimum innings pitched but there is no maximum innings pitched correct?

Also what happens if you do not reach the minimum innings pitched?

I believe that if you don't hit the minimum innings pitched during the week, your pitching stats don't count that week. I could be wrong, though. That's how it's worked in my past leagues, though.

You are correct - if you don't hit the minimum, you get nothing for pitching stats that week. It really shouldn't be that hard to hit.

It is just a good way to avoid people from starting a couple of guys that have really good starts/games, and then benching their pitchers the rest of the week.

No maximum innings pitched. But remember there are weekly not daily changes so it's not like you can just cycle in every pitcher pitching that week to win the counting stats (IP, W, K; also SV but those are different pitchers) and there is a negative counting stat (L) to counteract something like that. You could load up with all 2 start pitchers for the week but you'll kill your rate stats (ERA, WHIP) because you're going to be starting some crappy pitchers.

If you don't reach your minimum, your opponent gets all the points in pitching stats for the week.

Realistically, if you run out 7 SPs (6 SPs, P slot), you should have no trouble at all getting to this. If you average 6 IPs from all of your guys, that gets you to 42. Realistically, you should get 1 or 2 2-start pitchers per week (7 days per week, 1 start every 5 days). On average, you should get 6 IPs from these starters with 9 starts and another ~6 IPs from your RPs for a total of 60 IPs so even with an injury, you should be just fine.

The IP limit is there to prevent the old LIMA strategy and give some depth to pitching where you need a lot of SPs to go along with a lot of position players to balance things out.

Makes sense. Now why would a league have a maximum like 232 games started or 29 games started per pitching slot?

I know I just addressed this in the past post, but speaking just to this question:
1) 42 IP per week limits
2) (more importantly) Weekly changes- you set your lineup on Sunday and it's set for the week

Sure, it's a launching pad but he's been good there in the past and fangraphs had a great article about how, surprise, Dusty screwed him up for about a third of the season last year with a stupid long outing in an extra inning game (tho I suppose he could do it again...)

I assume then that transactions work like they do in fantasy football - you pick up a new guy on Tuesday, you don't get to use him until the next week (while they guy you dropped isn't dropped until then too)

That's going to be for roto, or especially point based systems, and not H2H. For roto, it keeps people from loading up and trying to hit really hard on the counting stats. For points leagues, almost all starts will end up being positive in points unless you get completely bombed. So if you just started 5 guys every day, you'd get a ton of points as every start would be positive as 5 #5 guys could equal the output of a #1 but for fantasy, a #1 pitcher should be valuable where a #5 should be a detriment.

It's pretty much like that. Say, Stud McProspect gets called up Wednesday and you get him off the ww, he can't play until the next week, which starts Monday.

I've never done auction leagues. I'm very curious to the mentality of it since it's not about which order you pick players, but I would think there would be some strategy as to the order in which players were brought up to be bid on.

The three leagues I have been in always did daily. Granted, one of them was a Yahoo Public league with idiots for owners, but still.

After reading Fantasyland again i am very excited about the auction. I am trying to lay the groundwork for an auction with local owners that is held at my house. I really like the idea of my first auction being online but i think a live auction just ad another level. There is a lot of strategy regarding who you ther when it is your turn to nominate a player.

How does that normally work, cubboy? There is a draft list and when you are up, you select a player to be put on the block, then everyone bids? I have never done an auction in any sport, but always thought it would be fun.

Yep. Whoever is up throws a name out there and people bid. I've done them for football. Not nearly as time consuming as I imagine baseball would be, but it's fun and interesting to see peoples strategy.

I remember the first one I did in 2004 (I think it was) some guys first two bids were LT and Shaun Alexander. He spent all his money on them and filled his team with 1 dollar players.

Needless to say he did not win.

As Detox said you take turns nominating a player and then everyone bids on them. It can get pretty crazy early as the top guys will go for big money and in the middle of the auction is when some bargains come along. If you go to ESPN you actually participate in some mock drafts to get a feel for what the auction will be like as well as what players are going for. There are a couple different schools of thought about nominating and how it differs from h2h. The LIMA drafting plan was one strategy that worked early on but now i think everyone knows about it so some of the best LIMA players get bid up. I have spent the last three weeks reading everything i can to get ready for the draft. My wife really thinks i am nuts but is very supportive of my addiction.
