sorry, I subscribed to this thread (instant) but I didn't receive the last 6 posts. Weird.

1.7 Grady Sizemore OF, CLE

This sold it for me. "Linebacker"

Feb 22 The Indians had a scare Sunday, when Sizemore and fellow outfielder Shin-Shoo Choo collided while chasing a ball in right-center during a drill.
Advice: Choo was escorted from the field by a trainer and had his right knee examined before returning for batting practice about 30 minutes later. He suffered only a bruise and felt lucky not to be more seriously hurt.

Meanwhile, Sizemore, a high school football star who was recruited to play at Washington, was barely fazed. "I guess Choo forgot I was a linebacker," he joked.

For me, it was a toss-up between Cabrera and Sizemore. In the end, I went with Cabrera since they were roughly equivalent last year but it was a good year for Sizemore and a "bad" year for Cabrera. Sizemore was more valuable with more balance and a positional scarcity (CF) but the potential for this year from Cabrera offset it in my mind. Either way, the pick was between those two for me.

Oye, really wish I had ended up picking a few spots earlier or right at the end of the round. Got 3 names going around in my head and have settled on each one for a while since Ramz picked, just not quite as sold on any of them as I would have been with a couple of the guys who just went (was really hoping you'd all just ignore Cabrera).

heh, figured that while I'm posting a lamentation that Mizzou would get his pick in and I'd end up dolaing.

Since I'll have more time to think about it and I'll be on the clock until tomorrow anyway if I'm up, I'll wait to pick until after I get back from OU beating Kansas sans Blake Griffin so I can give it more thought.

Grady is the man. He once stole home against the Toronto Blue Jays while Travis Hafner was batting and Dustin McGowan was pitching. Hafner hits lefthanded and McGowan throws righthanded. So yes, everyone saw Grady coming the entire time.

Ok, let's use this as a sample to help explain the wekkday timing rules. The last pick was made at 6:50pm CT. That means tomorrow morning's pick has to be made by 9am CT as there was more than 1 hour before 10pm tonight.

If sooner333 makes his pick tonight- or any time not on the clock (say, 3am), then CU Tiger will be on the clock until 10am tomorrow morning as it will have been made with under 1 hour left on the clock for the night.

Quick question: is there a reason why we're using CT and not ET? We love our ET on the East Coast.

Plus I don't like the Brewers.

Well, because I lived in Kansas the last few years and it made sense to me then

A silly, niggling complaint I have about moving out to Richmond is that eastern time makes no sense. Football goes noon-6 on central. Doesn't that make a lot more sense? You can evenly block out a simple quarter of Sundays (and it keeps pastors from pontificating too long on football weeks). Primetime ends at 10 in the central- a nice round number. 11? News at 11? Huh? Instead, you have news at 6 and 10. I'm watching Big Monday. Basketball in Big XII territory starting at 9? That seems awfully late. How about 8-10. That makes a lot more sense

Another thing I noticed is that things happen in the east coast at the same time as they did in the central time zone, only difference is that it's an hour later on the clock. People seem to get to work at 9 and leave around 6 rather than 8 to 5. People seem to wake later, eat later, and go to sleep later. Again, it all happens at the same time in the time-space continuum, but the clocks are different. So, I'll go with the one that makes more sense.

In short, no good reason- just because. Just think of it as 9am-11pm ET

And the Braun pick was definitely good there - I knew I was kidding myself thinking he might be there at the turn.

I've never lived outside the Eastern Time Zone so it's interesting to hear you talk about football games starting at noon and so forth. I've just always been used to day games starting at 1 PM and night games at 7 PM and prime time going until 11 PM.

Just a reminder, CU Tiger has until 10am CT this morning to make a pick (around 2 hours). Then after his two, sooner333 is back up.

If he doesn't pick, then at 10 CT (11 ET), Yahoo will pick Josh Hamilton. Ian Kinsler is next on the list. I've already sent a PM and he was on earlier this morning but apparently didn't stop by this thread

C'mon, we shouldn't be seeing this at all this early. This goes back to the "if you can't keep up with the schedule, don't join the league"

1.12 Josh Hamilton

Now the clock resets and there's 6 hours until his next pick (4pm CT/5pm ET). If he misses both of these, there's going to be an immediate opening for a new owner for this team. You have to check every morning, every night, and probably a time or two during the day, at least.

As stated in the rules: "If you miss more than 2 picks in the draft (i.e. time limit expired so a Yahoo rankings pick), particularly in the first 10 rounds, then you can be replaced as manager."

If we replace the manager, I do suggest that we let the new manager have a mulligan and make picks 1.12 and 2.1 over to make it more fair if that's ok with everyone else

For sure, given that it's back to back picks and the first two the team has in the draft, no sense not giving them complete control over them. Hopefully we can more than make up for the lost time once we get rolling again.

I'm fine with this. I think it's fair to give him another six hours to make his second pick, especially because it's a weekday and things come up. If he misses the next pick, though, then I agree that he should be replaced. For now, though, let's just wait and hopefully he'll show and make his next pick.

Agreed- I hope it's just a good object lesson to everyone. For those who haven't done this league before, you really have to check your computer a lot for about 3 weeks. Hamilton isn't a bad pick at 1.12 either, particularly with CF eligibility, so it's not like the team is handicapped.

We just know how this goes, tho- if you aren't the one making your draft picks, agonizing over the coin flip picks, it doesn't feel like your team and you're much more likely to leave as you don't care.

I am cool with letting a new owner make the picks over. I understand giving another 6 hours because that is how things are setup but since they are back to back picks by the same owner it give them 12 hours to make their two picks which is kinda ridiculous but i know things can come up.

I've never used the subscribe feature. Does it just e-mail you posts as they happen? My solution was to bookmark the thread in the Firefox menubar.

That works too, although I like getting instant updates.

Yeah, it just e-mails you when someone updates, but then it says "You will not get anymore e-mails until you visit the forum again" So if I can't go to the forum right away, I don't get anymore updates.

Ok, got a PM From CU Tiger about half an hour ago. Basically, Blackberry died and laptop has been down for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, he'll also be on the road for the rest of the week. He suggested that if there's someone who wants to play, we should pass the spot to them.

Thoughts?

Why not contact one of the alternates at this point? It's bad timing for CU Tiger but he sounds like he's ok with bowing out at this point.

I have approached someone already online about joining. If they choose to accept, they get to redo pick 1.12 and make pick 2.1 so we can get moving again. If they decline, we have other options.

Hated to take two Rangers, especially with my first two picks, but both guys make sense.

FYI, SI- The Yahoo draft results are now messed up. Pujols shows as the 11th (and last) pick in the first round. It may correct itself when we add in DeToxRox but just thought you should be aware.
