If sooner333 makes his pick tonight- or any time not on the clock (say, 3am), then CU Tiger will be on the clock until 10am tomorrow morning as it will have been made with under 1 hour left on the clock for the night.

Can you explain this again please? I'm still a little lost.

We're actively drafting during the day between 9 AM and 11 PM. Let's say LastWhiteSoxFanStanding makes his next pick at 10:30 PM tonight. Now cubboyroy1826 is on the board. Let's say he makes his pick at 11:30 PM. He "used" 30 minutes of game time. Now I would expect to have to make my pick by 9 AM since I had the entire overnight period to pick. Is that correct?

Let's say also that cubboyroy1826 did not make a pick in the overnight period. When would his deadline be the following morning? Would it not be 2:30 PM since he had 30 mins from the following night?

Aren't we always going in six hour time increments during the week?

If I'm reading it correctly, essentially it's like this:

Standard 6 hour pick time limit: 8am-10pm CT

If you're on the clock more than an hour prior to the cutoff (10pm), you have 1 hour when the clock starts in the morning to make your pick.

If you're on the clock less than an hour before the cutoff (or if the pick is made during the dead time [10:01pm-7:59am]) then you have 2 hours from when the clock starts in the morning.

So essentially the dead time counts as around 4 hours worth of clock time.

Sort of a check in last thing/first thing setup from what I'm seeing.

Bingo, exactly how I am reading it too. Basically like SI said, you should be able to check in once before deadline, so you wouldn't get your full time the next morning if you were last up the night before (gotta keep it moving along some how), but you still get some time the next morning just in case.

It's what both Travis and PackerFanatic said- kindof think of it as 4 hours passing overnight (not entirely, since we round to 9am and 10am). The idea is that you should be able to check either at night or before the time starts in the morning, preferably both. Plus, you'll know about when your pick is coming up, since odds are there aren't going to be a run of 4 or 5 picks at night (it has happened before). But if it does, then you still have at least 2 hours (until 10am CT) in the morning.

One note about your examples- since it's a snake draft, we're still a ways away from your pick (Toddzilla, Travis, MizzouRah are up next). But, let's go with what you had:

1) CBR1826 makes his pick at 10:30pm (CT) and LWSFS makes his at 11:30pm (CT). Since those are after the clock has expired for the day, the next pick isn't due until 10am (CT) as the current picker (which would have been you) didn't have more than an hour the night before. Any time picks are made overnight off the clock is gravy- it's nice to get in some picks, but we aren't going to penalize someone for not being on at 2 in the morning to make picks.

2) If CBR1826 is up and the previous pick was made at, say, 7pm CT and he doesn't notice at all that night. He has until 9am the next morning to make the pick- not until 11am (7-10pm, 8-11am). You don't get a true 6 hours on the overnight because the idea is that everyone is supposed to check at night and in the morning to see whereabouts they are picking.

Speaking of which:

Toddzilla
Travis
MizzouRah

are up.

That last pick was made almost 5 hours ago so Toddzilla has about an hour to go on the clock. If he doesn't make the pick, Jimmy Rollins is next on the list and will go at 8:41pm CT (9:41pm ET).

Decided to do some more time-related posts. Toddzilla picked at 7:51pm CT. So, that means Travis has until 9am CT tomorrow morning to pick (Longoria, Soriano are next on the board). If he picks tonight, then it will be after hours and MizzouRah will have until 10am CT tomorrow morning. If many picks are made at night, any subsequent drafter such as Ramzavail, who is after them, or myself, would have until 10am CT tomorrow morning.

Honestly I think Kinsler in the 1st round was a far bigger reach than Utley in the 2nd.

Well, that made my decision easy (Santana, not PF's situation- that patently sucks). I had it down to 2 names and the other just went. So, onto my boy, who I think I've had 3 of the 4 years in this league now...

2.7 Lance Berkman

PF, sent you a PM with something to consider. Otherwise, I'll gladly make list picks for you. Not like you need the stress of a baseball draft on this day.

I am not thrilled with this pick. I am picking him based on his upside which basically is code for there is a lot of room for improvement. Nobody describes Albert Pujols as having upside. He is just good.

Anyway I read an article saying Prince is less fat this year. Hopefully, that makes him hungrier at the dish.

Never mind. Ok, here are the next two picks from PackerFanatic's list. They were actually a pair I was considering:

2.12 SP Tim Lincecum
3.1 LF Matt Holliday

Back to LWSFS, CBR, and samifan

Most sites have his average draft position higher than he was taken here. I think people get overly optimistic with the shiny new toy and he runs a serious risk of sophomore slump with a high strikeout rate. But his ceiling is really high.

It seems that many in our league are grabbing "their guys" or guys they think will do better than many projections and I really like that about our league. I'm glad many are taking some chances, they usually pay off and they always make for a more interesting draft. There's one guy I almost took over Soriano and it will be interesting to see the parallels between the guys we did draft and the guys we wanted to draft.

I think you see that a lot in leagues where people are fairly knowledgeable. Hell, it's not as if the experts agree on everything and we all have blind spots, too.

For my drafting, I have 3 different ranking lists printed out like a checklist that I'm going down with each pick so I see if there are any outliers that have dropped a lot (Soriano dropped a lot in this league, for instance, relative to lists). Then, before making a pick, I have it narrowed down to a couple of guys in my mind and I go at comparing them various places- projections, previous stats, etc. And there's always gut feel involved. I think lists are also need to be adjusted for this league as, for instance, SBs and SVs are only 1 of 7 category now rather than 1 of 5 so they aren't as valuable as they would be in a traditional 5x5 league.
