Unreal. What a great night of hockey. If only the Leafs hadn't imploded and instead given us an OT game.

As a Flyers fan I say we've given enough OT games for round 1...still a very exciting series...hats off to Toronto fans...

I've gotta think Dallas is the prohibitive favorite now. Which, this year, means they'll be out next round in a sweep. Jersey wouldn't be a bad team to hang your hat on either. And since when did the West become the East? It's not typical for upper seeds to lose in the West.

Finally! The first good sports-related thing to happen in this god-forsaken month! Welcome to the land of the first round upsets, Colorado! Like Wolverine from the X-Men always says before leaping into a group of baddies, "I may go down, but I'm taking lots 'o' company!" The bitter pill of the sweep has just gotten a little easier to swallow.

As for the favorite... Well, at this point, it looks like Dallas, New Jersey, or Ottawa.

You have to like New Jersey because of the way Brodeur has played all year long. Dallas because of the firepower and Turco has showed that he is no Jim Carey. Ottawa because they are super-skilled.

According to a Toronto paper, Leafs/Flyers was the longest series since 1939, and second longest of all time (in terms of minutes played). It was also only the second series to include three multi-OT games (Devils/Rangers being the other).

It will be a long off-season in Toronto. This is a good team and there's no shame in losing to a team like the Flyers, but a first round exit is a first round exit and there's no way to justify that in Toronto. There will be changes... maybe not wholesale, sell-the-farm type changes, but this team needs some new blood. (You think it's easy to hate the Leafs now? Wait until they sign Derian Hatcher.)

That said, I have a lot of admiration for the Flyers. I usually come out of a playoff series hating the other team, but I have nothing but respect for Philadelphia. They were the better team in this series, and Ottawa will have their hands full.

"As times get closer to July 1, there's certainly more of a chance that curiosity peaks in a player. It's only logical that if it has been left this long, the team that owns the player is vulnerable to him exploring what is out there, particularly with teams like Detroit and Toronto out there." -- Pat Morris, Hatcher's agent.

He may resign, especially if the Stars win the Cup, but it's no sure thing.

Wow, a quote from an agent. Now that's news!

The only reason they haven't offered Hatcher a new contract is because Hicks is trying to sell the team and he wanted to leave the option up to any new owner. Of course it's not a sure thing, but I'm not worried about him playing for the bloody Leafs. If somehow he gets away and goes to the Wings, I'll quit watching hockey.

Flyers fan here,

Toronto was the toughest series I've ever watched, both teams really left it on the ice -unfortuanately Sens will benefit from it, I enjoyed reading the forum here, lotta knowledgable puck fans here too.
I'm surprised as anybody by the upsets in the West, Vancouver will probably be my favorite for the West, Ottawa for the East Ottawa wins the Cup on talent in 6 games.

EHM will be out in the fall? wheres thier website now? still have thier demo on my laptop...

Well this is a sad day for me. It's amazing how quickly things change I went from being so happy when the Blues were up 3-1 and the Wings had been swept out to watching the Blues drop 3 straight and exit in the first round.

Its cliche to say, but the Canucks just flat out wanted it more than the Blues did. They got down 3-1 and could have very easily just rolled over and given up, buit instead they came out hard the next 3 games and just flat out outplayed the Blues. The Blues waited to turn it on until the 3rd period of both games 5 and 6 and weren't able to put them away and in game 7 they just got outplayed the entire game. What a frustrating way to exit the playoffs.

Well said, Primelord. I'm exhausted today. The way the Blues came out last night, scored a quick goal and controlled the game for about 10mins, I thought, "This game could be over early".

I was right, over for the Blues though.

Toronto can't spend like Detroit, Colorado, St Louis, or New York, tho. The Wings are the Yankees of hockey: greatness through excessive spending.

From what I've seen, they are about 7th in the league, what's wrong with that? Do you want to buy the title? It isn't working too well for the Rangers.

Not to take anything away from Vancouver, and I was pulling for them, but the Blues were ravaged by the flu. When a dozen guys are sapped for energy, there's not much that can be done about it.

A little fiscal responsibility is a good thing in my book. The Yankees way is not the way it *should* be done. Anyone can have that type of talent with that type of payroll. Doing it with an average salary is much more impressive.

No, but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask a team to take whatever money comes in and put it back into the team. As opposed to say, pocketing the profit (or spending it to prop up a less successful NBA team).

I don't like to see teams owned by bored billionaires or mega-conglomerates go out and spend like crazy (cough, Capitals). But that's not the case here. The Leafs charge a fortune for tickets, food, parking, etc, and the building sells out every night. Half the people in Canada have a Leaf jersey hanging in their closet. They're making cash by the bucketfull, even if you factor in the dreaded US/Cdn dollar comparison. So no, being in the top quarter in spending isn't necessarily good enough, especially when recently the teams that spend more are the ones winning the Cups.

It's hard to be bitter with three Cups in six years. And I can perfectly understand why people hate the Wings--if I was not from Detroit I would probably hate them too. But to say its "Hawks fan heaven" because the Wings and Blues are out of the playoffs says a lot about the mentality of 'Hawks fans and the franchise, don't you think?

We haven't had much to cheer about lately except last year so we have to get our fun where we can find it and bitter Wings fans are always a good source of entertainment.

I agree with ML...the Leafs are one of the most fiscally responsible teams in the league.Granted..they have the 7th highest payroll..BUT...they could easily have the HIGHEST payroll in the league.

They have a self imposed budget and they stick to it.

Unfortunatly for us
