FOF2007: Once upon a time dynasty.....
My MP league has voted and we are now finally upgrading to FOF2007. This has finally forced me to buy the new version (I was so loyal to my FOF2004 Dynasty that I didn’t want to give it up) but now that I have the new game its time to start fresh.
This thread is called “Once upon a time” because it starts in the 1960’s, the AFL & NFL have merged and expanded to 32 teams. The merger and sudden expansion has caused the league to throw out all previous record books and the newly formed players union has also agreed to tear up all existing contracts in favor of a free agent system and the increase in jobs that expansion has provided. Thus we have an allocation draft. I have assumed the top management position with in the Chicago Bears organization and will be heavily involved in all player personnel decisions. Game plans, play calling, and starting rosters will be delegated to my coaching staff. I’ll get into more detail later about my coaches, but be aware they are not “my” guys, they were holdover's from the previous league and the organization has decided to keep them for now as they were all ready under contract and we have too many other things to worry about getting this franchise ready to play………….. Draft ground rules
After much discussion, the league has decided that the 1960 Allocation draft and rookie draft will be combined into one event. The Bears front office has a lot of work to do but, to keep us focused we have agreed that there are some ground rules we will adhere to during the building of our roster:
1) Defense wins Championships 2) The running game is key to controlling the game, and a good offensive line can make any running back look good. 3) We will favor Youthful Potential over Experience, but balancing the 2 will be important 4) A stud QB is not to be passed up. 5) Draft the right mix of players to play the 4-3 base defense 6) As long as you have 1 very good LB the other 2 can be average to below average overall, but high play diagnosis is a must. 7) FB's and TE's will be used for blocking first, everything else is secondary. 8) Kicker/Punter - we want to be solid in these 2 positions, field postion battles are what we are planning on. Defensive philosophy
We like the 4-3 because of its balance in stopping both runs and passes as well as being personnel-friendly since smaller players can be used effectively along the defensive line.
The 4-3 defensive positional philosophy we will be playing is as follows:

Today's Chicago Tribune
Draft Lottery awards Bears 5th Overall pick in League Allocation Draft
Fans are going bonkers after finding out the Bears will have a shot at one of the top 5 players to build their team around. Area watering holes were a buzz with predictions of whom the Bears should take and who might be available in the draft. The consensus is that RT, Forrest Gregg will be the number #1 pick by the Minnesota Vikings, after that no one is sure. A Tribune poll had fans torn over who should be taken. If Bart Starr is available do we even want an ex-Packer in a Bear uniform? Some said yes! Others couldn't think of anything worse. Either way he's the favorite of fan's to be the Bears #1 pick. Other fan favorites: Len Dawson QB, Geno Marchetti DE, Johnny Unitas QB, Jim Brown RB, & Lenny Moore RB. Three players who will be top players in the up coming season and are likely be available when the Bears pick but are expected to drop due there age are YA Tittle QB, Nigh Train Lane CB, & Art Donnovan LDT. It will be interesting to see which teams are willing to hitch their futures on these aging super stars. Again the top 5 picks in the draft were awareded to:
1> Minnesota, 2>Arizona, 3>Green Bay, 4>Philadelphia, & 5>Chicago. All 5 are NFC teams. It will be interesting considering Detroit is the only NFC North team not picking in the top 5, they were awarded the 22nd pick overall. Last edited by ffguru : 01-31-2007 at 04:36 PM. |

Draft Day
Round 1
1 Forrest Gregg LT Minnesota Vikings 2 Bart Starr QB Arizona Cardinals 3 Len Dawson QB Green Bay Packers 4 Doug Atkins LDE Philadelphia Eagles Now the Bears are on the clock, the war room in Chicago would have loved grabing Starr or Dawson to QB our squad for the next decade, but that's not possible now. The remaing QB's are good but not quite top 5 material. The thought of Jim Brown playing for us is enough to give fans a reson to show up every week, but instead the Bears Front office sticks with the plan of going D first. Every football fan along the southwestern coast of Lake Michigan holds their breath as the Commish announces "With the 5th pick in the draft the Chicago Bears select: LaVerne Torczon RDE." The first impression by Bears fans is Who? Why?.........After the pick is made draft analyst Mel Kiper Sr tells why he thinks the Bears made a great pick that will pay dividends now and into the future. "At 6-3 and 266lbs, Torczon has three years of experience in the AFL and excels in all facets of the game. He isn't quite fully developed yet but has the highest ceiling of any DE in the draft grading at a 73/90." The remainder of the first round played out as follows: 6 Gino Marchetti LDE Cincinnati Bengals 7 Y.A. Tittle QB Tampa Bay Buccaneers 8 Johnny Unitas QB Baltimore Ravens 9 Frank Fuller LDT Jacksonville Jaguars 10 Art Donovan LDT Indianapolis Colts 11 Bill Glass RDE Oakland Raiders 12 Andy Robustelli RDE Tennessee Titans 13 Sam Williams RDE Kansas City Chiefs 14 George Blanda QB New Jersey Jets 15 Willie Davis LDE New York Giants 16 Jim Brown RB Miami Dolphins 17 Jim Katcavage LDE Buffalo Bills 18 Rosey Grier RDT Carolina Panthers 19 Bill Koman SLB San Francisco 49ers 20 John Brodie QB New England Patriots 21 Lenny Moore RB Washington Redskins 22 Al Jamieson LT Detroit Lions 23 Bobby Mitchell FL New Orleans Saints 24 Raymond Berry FL Atlanta Falcons 25 Night Train Lane LCB Seattle Seahawks 26 Sonny Jurgensen QB Pittsburgh Steelers 27 Tom Addison LDE San Diego Chargers 28 Gene Lipscomb NT Cleveland Browns 29 Justin Johnson C Houston Texans 30 Sherman Plunkett LT St. Louis Rams 31 Ron Nery LDE Denver Broncos 32 Art Hunter C Dallas Cowboys 1st Round Positional Break Down: QB:7 RB: 2 WR: 2 OL: 5 DL: 14 LB: 1 DB: 1 K/P: 0 I was suprised to see the DL outpace the OL 14-5, but the OL talent is pretty weak, considering 2 were centers it shows how shallow the first tier of talent is. The second OL taken was Al Jamison by the Lions and he will be a project with a 37/83 grade. Big news makers in the first round was Unitas returning to Baltimore and the Dolphins "stealing" Jim Brown at #16. Top players on the board going into the second round: Gene Hickerson RG 77/77, Bruce Bosley C 81/81, Sam Huff MLB, 73/73, G's Stan Jones & Jimmy Ray Smith both 75/75. Round 2
Having to sit around and wait for the 28th selection of the second round really suck because the talent pool is quickly drying up. All the top player mentioned in the previous post are gone by the time the Bears get to pick again. Other players we were hoping for like Nitschkie and Van Brocklin (the last decent QB's) are also gone. We decide that we want have some areas that are major strengths and Saftey is one position that hasn't been picked yet in the draft. The Bears select DB Johnnie Robinson, who is more potential than current ability at 50/83, but we like this in a rookie. He looks to be a ball hawk and a great punt returner too. Rounds 3 & 4
Well Jack Kemp was still available and not only did the Bears missed him we now get to face him twice a year in Minnesota. With only 3 CB's selected in the first two rounds we have a chance to grab some talent at an importand positon. The Bears go with Dick LeBeau who is entering his second season and is rated 62/72. Dick's skills include a 100 rating in INTs and Bump & Run coverage which is enough to make me happy. By the time the end of the fourth round come along I'm thinking stud LB. All decent QB's, RB's, & OL players are gone and the talent pool is wide. We end up selecting Jim Houston with the 124th overall pick. Jim is a rookie with 36/71 ratings so we will throw him righ in there so he can reach is potential ASAP!

Positional Analysis – Offense
QB – Draft Grade C-/C+ (Current/Potential) While we didn’t make any reaches by waiting until the XX round to take the rookie Les Hitchcock (8/47), we didn’t get much value either. The draft did not have many valuable QB’s. John Roach (40/40) has 5 years experience, is rated average to below average in every QB skill making him the favorite to start the season as the #1 QB unless on of the younger guys beats him out in the preseason. The other 2 QB’s we took are raw: T. Tuggle 7/38 & C. Medina 8/29. RB- B/B RB is another position that we waited on and found some lower rated guys who fit our finesse running system. LG Dupre (40/40) brings 6 years of experience and will be the #1 guy getting about 60% of the carries, the #2 guy is rookie Preston Bernardini (34/46) who will get the other 40% of our carries to keep LG fresh. Rico Kramer (28/39) & Carlton Weston will provide depth. TE C+/B Pete Brewster is the Vet (41/41) and Ricky Shireman is the rookie with upside (29/47), Rob Reed (18/36) adds blocking strength as a 3rd TE in goal line situations. All 3 are better blockers than receivers at this point. WR D/C We really have some projects here which is ok, we don’t have much at QB or WR which means we will run the ball alot.T. Barr (31/31), K. Ficorelli (21/41), J. Green (22/40), & G. Cappelletti (16/29) are all projects and 3 of the 4 are rookies. Cappelletti will be a big part of the return team. OL B+/B This is the only area that we looked at early in the draft. Starting line looks like this: C – O. Bland 49/49 (rookie) LG – H. Sewell 58/58 (7 year vet) RG- J. Davis 45/63 (rookie) LT- J. Parker 60/60 (3 year vet) RT – E. Danehauer 26/49 (rookie) & F. O’Brien 33/43 (1 year vet) will battle for this spot. Losser will be the main backup at both tackle spots. Again we focused on run blocking abilities which is consistent with our plan for year 1. Last edited by ffguru : 02-01-2007 at 04:45 PM. |
