Old games

So yesterday the wife and daughter went to some American Girl bs up 400 leaving me alone in the house for 2+ hours with minimal chores to do. I caught up on my Game of Thrones and decided to clean out some old boxes (felt the hour would just get my appetite started on Civ without satisfying). I found my old Might and Magic 7 discs and though about how much I loved those games. I think I started with the M&M2 and played everything from World of Xeen to the newer ones (stopping at 8 I believe). I don't have the discs from the old ones, but I found a site where you can download these as a big file (for $9.99 or so). Anyone ever have any luck playing these old games on their newer PCs/laptops (like XP or Win7)? Any games you wish you could resurrect on your current PC? I spent most of college playing Civ2, Heroes of Might and Magic, and Front Page Sports Football/Baseball, but I doubt any of these would work (I've used Doxbox for FPS Football and it's ok).

GoG has the HoMM series up to the 5th one. There is a 6th one out now. The 3rd one, considered the best, can be bought for $9.99.

That looks better, the other one was on some UBI site or something. Do these run well on newer machines?

Yep. They are listed as working on XP-Win 8.

Any DOS games come with a preconfigured DOSBox launcher, any other games often have fixes to run on newer systems. Games should list what operating systems they work with on the store page.

If there's a common issue with a game not working properly there is usually info on it and fixes in the gog forums.

I bought the M&M pack about a year ago. MMVI works fine, I haven't tried the other ones, but I haven't heard of any issues.

If you've never played it and like Civilisation - try and get hold of a copy of 'Master of Magic' ... its basically Civilisation but with spells and a fantasy theme ... was awesome, its one of the few Dos games I still go back to sporadically*.

*The computer AI is unfortunately a tad restricted, so you might have to setup some 'house rules' once you get the hang of things .... but apart from that its still amazing.

i just bought Alpha Centauri last week...download process was no problem...the only thing about GoG that i would mention is, the site is located somewhere in Eastern Europe, so my Check Card actually didnt work, and my bank fraud alert called me to make sure i wanted the transaction
