Question re: sports "fanology"
I’ve noticed that throughout my sports fan career I am always partial to players I “like” more than simply the best players. Now hopefully the players I like are also very good, but that’s not always the case. I guess I am more of a fan of good qualities rather than pure talent.
This has always carried over to my sports gaming as well. I remember once drafting William Andrews (awesome Falcons RB for you young’uns) first over Dan Fouts in an APBA football league I was in and getting taunted over it. Nothing against Fouts - he was an awesome QB and a good guy - but I just "liked" Andrews better. He was my kind of player. As the NFL draft approaches, I again find myself hoping that certain players drop to my teams. Sure, these guys are good players, but I am also favoring some for what might be the wrong reasons in terms of their value. I’m curious what others think of this. Comments?

absolutely. Once you form a loyalty to a player, you wish evertyhing possible will happen in order for them to succeed.
I'm currently wishing the Jets will trade or be unable to re-sign Lamont Jordan so that Curtis Martin will be around long enough to break the Jets all-time rushing record (he's about 1,500 yards away right now). Knowing full well Curtis might be on his last legs at that point, I simple don't care. I'd rather he be around than a younger, more talented running back. Ray Lucas is also still my favorite QB. He's a fellow Rutgers alum and he nearly saved the Jets '99 season. |

I'm a big Notre Dame fan. Jeff Faine has become one of my favorite Irish players of all time. I'm really hoping the Bengals (my favorite pro team, Lord knows why) draft him if he is available at 2.1. Of course, this would not only bring in one of my favorite players, it would also fill at huge need to upgrade the middle of the O-line.

Free agency is a good thing, but it makes it hard for me to root for individual players sometimes--when players I like get traded to teams I hate and vice/versa.
I pick fantasy teams based, in part, on who I like--I never win, but I have more fun following my guys. As long as I am not playing $150/team, I am fine with that. (BTW, if you ever see me at a $150/team fantasy football league draft, you will recognize me by the huge "SUCKER" sign attached to my forehead. I know my limits.) |

I always harbored a general dislike for Walter Payton the player, for one reason only. Tony Dorsett was my favorite football player when I was a kid and I hated that there was anyone better.

Fantasy football is where I throw all allegiances aside. I ran a 100 dollar/head league last year, and couldn't believe some of the moves people would make to get the players they wanted. I on the other hand actually traded away my favorite player (Curtis Martin) for something that worked out really well (escaping me right now). |

*chuckle* Thankfully, I've moved past that point in fantasy football, and am a two-time holder of my league championship trophy, baybeeee!
