FOF7 - Montani Semper Liberi - Take 2

I ran an old dynasty for FOF2k7 (I think) where I built a team of players exclusively from WV, and looked to see how long it would take until I could win a Super Bowl. It took like five seasons or something - very quick. So let's try that again, with a new cast and a new team.

The goal - using a team of only players from West Virginia, win a Super Bowl.

What designates a player from WV and what are the rules of the dynasty?

A player must either be:

1) - From a WV hometown in their bio or

2) - Graduated from a WV school

I must play every WV player on my roster, above better bodies. So I have to play a 20/28 guy from Marshall over a 45/49 guy who is not a WV player.

I must always make a play for a player from WV, either in the draft, trades, or FA, attempting to sign them as needed.

I can only start a non-WV player when there are no others on my roster (or they are injured).

Within these rules, I am free to use every single tool I have, such as franchise tags, to make my best mountaineer roster.

I am playing as Braham Essex, without the draft, using full X Factor, without the possibility of being fired, with chemistry and such on.

We are the Jaguars

Game on!

It seems like the X Factor helped our talent level. We have a lot of good talent. Not at QB of course.

Before I even begin, I make my first trade. I trade P Bryan Anger straight up to the Colts for P Pat McAfee. McAfee is a WVU grad.

I want to make a few trades. Perhaps I can persuade Geno Smith to come my way. Nah, they don't want to trade away their best QB without getting a "comparable" QB in return. Smith is just 27/59 - but that's good enough for my team - better than anything I have. Hmm...no Smith it seems.

WR Tavon Austin for Justin Blackmon (good, because Blackmon is better) is rejected because the Rams don;t want to lose a fan favorite.

WR Stedman Bailey sucks, so he's not a trade target right now.

WLB Bruce Irvin, from the Seahawks, is a hot WVU grad. I trade my OLB Russell Allen and my 2nd rounder this year for Irvin and their 6th round pick. That's a good pickup too.

The Steelers have a studly FB in Will Johnson, maybe a target later.

The giants have a decent backup OG

Patriots have a rookie 2nd pick WR Aaron Dobson from Marshall, but he's not that sexy. The Colts have RB Ahmad Bradshaw.

And that's basically it for WV talent. Not a lot.

When I did this dynasty challenge before, I had better talent. For example, three starting QBs (Chad Pennington, Marc Bulger, Byron Leftwich) along with Randy Moss and John Browning and Anthony Becht and Mike Vanderjagt and many others. Nows its tougher.

I make a play for FB Will Johnson, because I can. I trade DT Marks, CB Fleming and my 4th rounder to them for him and their 7th rounder.

I sign some players:

QB Danny Ellis, WVU
RB Darius Raynaud, WVU
FL Stanley Shannon, WVU
DE Vinny Givens, WVU
WLB Ronald Aschenbrenner, WVU

DT Samuel Sepulveda, West Virginia Tech

MLB Rich Siever, Marshall
TE Lee Smith, Marshall
RT Daniel Baldridge, Marshall

I then trim some of the fat to prepare for preseason.

I shop a few players to pick up some future picks. I might as well load up in case we get some good players generated in the draft.

No one wants Mo-Jo. or Marcedes Lewis.

I trade WR Cecil Shorts to the Falcons for their 3rd this year and 4th next year.

WR Justin Blackmon turns into the Jets 2nd next year and 4th the year after that.

I extend P Pat McAfee by two years.

Here are my starters this year, and I'ma going to skip the ones that are not WV players:

QB Danny Ellis - I cut Gabbert, and Henne is barely better than him anyway. He rocks a 9/47. That's some decent potential later on down the road.

RB Darius Reynaud - Instantly turning Mo-Jo into the most expensive return man in the league, Reynaud is a 30/35 5th year pro who will start for us baby.

FB Will Johnson - Who's a sexy FB? 40/65

FL Stanley Shannon - 18/37 but the way was cleared with my trades.

OT Daniel Baldridge - At 18/40, Baldridge will be starting for us as a decent enough target.

P Pat McAfee - 70/70 punter and perfectly suited for long term success on our team. Not much scoring after all!

DT Samuel Sepulveda - 21/30 - Just a patch job

WLB Bruce Irvin - 39/64 body is a long term man and trade target.

We don't care about no one else, right? Right?

We'll just fast sim this first season - after all, this is about getting to the off season where I can try to procure more Mountain State talent.

We go 2-2 in the preseason, beating Miami and Philadelphia

Minor injuries to people we don;t care about.

We open up the first quarter of the season 1-3, with a single victory over the Raiders. In week 5 we lose to the then 0-4 Rams. We lose against powerhouse teams Denver, San Francisco and San Diego - all with great records and finish the half 1-7.

The Titans edge us 24-20. But then we throttle the Cardinals 41-17. Losses to Houston and Cleveland follow, and every loss came against a team with 5 or fewer wins.

In the final quarter of the season, Oakland enters with a 1 win and us with 2. The Rams, at 2-9-1 are next in line. We lose two but then beat our rivals the Titans 26-23 and finish 3-13 on the season, with the third best pick behind the Rams and Raiders.

Denver crushes Dallas in the Super Bowl 34-9.

I forgot to change the little dial, so my staff were fixing the depth chart after every game, so the players I forced into starting roles didn;t start and play - so we were 3-13 with players like Mo-Jo, Henne and others in places. Ah well.

Still some good stats by a few starters - WLB Irvin had 4.5 sacks and a ton of tackles.

Season Awards:

All Pro 1st Team - P Pat McAfee

We also got...Defensive Rookie of the year and All Pro 2nd Team with SS Johnathan Cyprien. I figured I;d tell you in case you cared. This was a stacked roster of talent I was trading people from.

Year End Score was 53 -

Let's hit the off season baby!

I give a raise and extend the deal of my strength coach - he's pretty good.

Our DC is out of contract, so I move to the staff draft.

We pick 26th in the staff draft. I draft a new DC in the 3rd round.

Alright, let's head to free agency and look at the draft - any winners?

To begin, I check WVU and Marshall to see if I have any talent, and then i fan through the top 100 rookies to see if any have a WV hometown. I get to major hits from WVU - two players in the top ten! That's right baby - Mountaineers rising!

But there are none from WV itself, just the two studs.

They are:

#6 - CB Conner Joseph, one red, three blue combine numbers, and some sexy looking bars.

#9 - OG Ed Murphy - three red, two blue, and again, veeery sexy bars.

So I could lock down my first permanent WV player in the O Line or the first permanent one in the secondary, barring an incredible bad experience with busting. Busting will dash my dynasty against the rocks.

I sign or re-sign a bunch of WV-orientated Free Agents (no major victories here)

RB Darius Reynaud
RB Ahmad Bradshaw
SS Ryan Mundy
FL Stanley Shannon
RT Daniel Baldridge
FS CJ Spillman
LG Doug Legursky
SILB Mario Harvey
WLB Ronald Aschenbrenner

So that gives me some bodies for a while. Again, not a lot of talent here.

I can;t find my QB though, looks like he is not on my team, he's not in the FA pool, and he's not on the transaction log as being picked up by another. Well, I sign Luke McCown to a two year deal instead. He's in his mid 40s. Better than Henne!

I want to target both studs in the draft. I begin the draft.

Neither of my guys goes in the 1st two picks. So I can go stud CB or stud OG. I take CB Joseph. Yay. Now I want to move in and grab my OG too.

I trade:

OT Luke Joeckel and DE Tyson Alualu to the Cleveland Browns for their: 1st pick, 8th overall, 5th next year, and 3rd in two years.

And I select OG Ed Murphy at the 1.8 spot.

Now it's time to look and see what other targets might be in the draft...

Marshall has three players, none of them good. The same is true of players from WVU, West Virginia State and WVU-Tech.

No other WV players have gone by the end of the 2nd round when I pick at 2.29.

Here's the rest of our draft:

2nd - OT Garrett Peterson, Marshall
3rd - RB Robbie Quinn, WVU
3rd - CB Walt Merandi, WVU
5th - QB Brenden Walson, West Virginia Tech
6th - RB Felix Winslett, West Virginia State
6th - WR Dylan Noriega, WVU
7th - WR Junior Shahee, Marshall
7th - OLB Nathianiel Griffith, Marshall

And that's the draft.

Post-Draft I bring in a few players to make my roster legal.

I sign a bunch of UFAs and such and head to camp with 62 players.

I have FB Will Johnson begin to bulk up. I'm considering future switch to TE.

Let's run camp, and hope we don;t have rookie busts. Here're my rookies post camp:

OG Ed Murphy, 49/81 - A sexy man. He's strong everywhere and he'll be a rock on my team for a long time

CB Conner Joseph - 59/59 - Seems like he's developed, but he's still got some growth potential. He's in the 50s in Man2man, play diag and punishing hitter, 80s and 70s elsewhere in potential or real, and 100 pot in zone d.

No major draft booms. The other players are hardly worth mentioning. OT Peterson busted to 10/31. So this draft is mainly about two things - depth of content by adding a lot of WV players to me team, and the two studs above.

Cleveland offers me their 3rd rounder for MLB Paul Poz, and I accept.

I trade S Josh Evans to Washington for their 4th and 6th in 2017.

I trade WR Ace Sanders to the Bucs for their 3rd in 2017.

I cut and massage my roster.

I move SS Ryan Mundy to FS.

The 2014 Jacksonville Jaguars

RB Ahmad Bradshaw - With a solid 33/33 rating, he will be leading our rushing attack. Let's go buddy!

FB Will Johnson - He lost his green bars and stopped at red in training camp, so now he's just 46/46. That's better than a lot of WV players though.

FL Stanley Shannon - Not high quality players left at the WR position after trading my guys. But we have some WV players rocking the block and that's what matters!

SE Dylan Noriega - See above

OG Ed Murphy - And so it begins...

OT Daniel Baldridge - Growth please. He could be average.

P Pat McAfee - Can he build on his All Pro 1st Team Award last year?

WLB Bruce Irvin - 71/71 for the guy, and he's a star in the making

MLB Rich Siever - The best of a weak lot, subbing in for newly traded Poz. He'll be fine, right?

CB Conner Joseph - Oh yes, baby!

FS Ryan Mundy - Rocking a 25/43 body, Ryan is our best non-Cyprien safety. So let's get him some playing time.

All right, are you ready to rumble?!?!?!

Like last year, I expect to sort of fast sim this season too, although not as much perhaps. I don;t expect much from it. But I have to massage the roster and such as injuries and more arrive. Here we go

We finish the preseason 1-3 and we a few injuries to secondary folks.

We finish the first quarter an anemic 0-4. The next quarter goes similarly - 0-8 for the team. In real life, the Jags would go 0-8 and win a bunch of games in a season. Can we do the same?

A loss to the Titans sees us to our bye, but post-bye we record our first win of the season 20-3 against the Texans. Our victory included a 99 yard kickoff return for a score by a non-WV player. WR Stanley Shannon had 7 grabs for 115 yards. So we are now 1-9.

We then travel to the then 7-3 Cowboys and beat them 24-20. It included a 94 yard pick and return for a score by rookie Conner Joseph, Game MVP. We then sandblast the Bills in our place 28-9 with FS Ryan Mundy the Game MVP with 2 picks. WR Dylan Noriega is out for the season for 23 weeks with a broken ankle. I IR him and move on.

I reactive WR Junior Shehee. Then we lose 26-34 to the Redskins and end our winning mojo. RB Ahmad Bradshaw had 107 yards on 14 carries, Shehee was 7 catches for 102 yards in his first effort off the bench. A Non-WV player on WR is out for two years with a degenerative hip condition so I IR him. Shehee will move up to the starting role and I sign some bum.

The 4 win Colts arrive and we lose 10-24. We follow that with a 12-25 loss against the Giants. The Titans crush us in Game 17 38-17, but at least Shehee notched a 102 yard game.

So we finish 3-13 again. The Cardinals went 0-16 and then we are the only team with 3 or fewer wins. So we draft in the two spot.

The Bengals beat the Giants 28-15 in the Super Bowl.

We won these season awards:

1st Team All Pro -

P Pat McAfee

Well, he did repeat. Yay!

Stats:

RB Ahmad Bradshaw - 167 for 606 yards, 2 scores

WR Stanley Shannon - 50 catches, 614 yards, 3 scores

WR Dylan Noriega, 12 starts, 40 catches, 397 yards, no scores

WR Junior Shehee, 4 starts, 28 catches, 356 yards, no scores

So Shehee looks like someone I want to push next year

OG Ed Murphy - 24 KRB of 72 KRO, 10 sacks allowed

A bit rough, but the best on the team.

MLB Josh Seiver, 100 solo tackles, 32 assists, 1 sack, 3 hurries, 5 pasdef

Not a bad line for a guy.

WLB Bruce Irvin, 87 and 21, 2 sacks, 1 blocked pass, 6 hurries, 5 knockdowns, 1 int, 7 pasdef

What I would expect from my guy

CB Conner Joseph, 4 picks, 2 run back for scores, 15 pasdef

S Ryan Mundy, 4 picks, 7 pasdef, 3 forced fumbles

Alright guys. Not bad all things considering. But what can you do next year?

We scored 53 again

I select a new OC in the draft who is a better playcaller, and a better assistant coach.

Alright, let's advance to FA and see what the draft did for us...

Last year I had two top ten players from WVU and that was great. This year, the draft is not so accommodating.

But we still have one...

TE Javier Porto, from Lewisburg WV, graduated from Kansas State. #11 best player on the draft board. Four red and two blue numbers. Oh yes. We are drafting him.

Any others?

There's a decent DE Lorenzo Casanova from WVU with 2 red, 2 blue and one green combine. I'd love to come away with both.

OG Ed Murphy busted massively in pass protecting. On the other hand, CB Conner Joseph has grown to 74/74. WLB Bruce Irvin is up to 80/80 and I resign him. I extend Pat McAfee, Rich Seiver and a few others as well.

I sign DT Chris Neild and resign FA SLB J.T. Thomas.

In FA, I sign Will Johnson to a 3 year deal.

Do I hear a draft?

I get my guy at 1.2, but will the 6th best DE in teh draft still be there at 2.2? Let's push the draft a bit and see.

DE Casanova does not fall in the top 10, but two DEs are off the board. Another DE falls at 1.13, but by 1.16, DE Casanova is still there.

No other DE is drafted in the first round. So at a 2.2 spot, I grab my man.

I trade my 3.2 this year to the Cards for their 3rd rounder next year.

The rest of our draft goes:

3rd - CB Butch Reynolds, WVU
4th - OG Norbert Miller, WVU
4th - OLB Logan Gomez, Marshall
5th - OG Brian Buchannon, WVU
6th - OT Christian Menkin, Marshall
7th - FS Melvin Harrison, WVU

In late FA< i sign some ufas, including some from WVU and Marshall.

Post Camp

TE Javier Porto, 65/84, who's a sexy looking fiend?

DE Lorenzo Casanova - busted to 23/45. Yuck.

No one else has above a 40 potential.

CB Conner Joseph is up to 81/81. OG Murphy is still at 71/71.

Your 2015 Jacksonville Jaguars:

RB Ahmad Bradshaw - Come on baby!

FB Will Johnson - Let's see a lil' life for ya

TE Javier Porto - Don't be a bust oh oh, Da Kommisar back oh oh!

WR Stanley Shannon - Well, consistency wins games, right?

WR Junior Shehee - Ended the season well, let's give him a shot.

OG Ed Murphy - Still good even post-bust.

OG Brian Buchannon - The best of a poor lot.

OT Cristian Meekin - Also not hot

P Pat McAfee - Can we do 1st Team three years in a row?

DT Chris Neild - Just a 37/37 guy, but he's from a WV school, so let's run him and relax.

DE Lorenzo Casanova - He's still going to play.

MLB Rich Siever - I was hoping his skills would improve, but not really.

WLB Bruce Irvin - Yeah baby

SLB JT Thomas - Not that sucky

CB Conner Joseph - He's the pick that keeps on giving.

FS Ryan Mundy - I was also hoping we might have some growth here too, but again, that was not the case.

Let's go folks!

Who knows what the 0-4 preseason portends?

We lose to the Titans and a non-WV player is injured for the year. I toss the DE on IR and sign some bum. Then we lose 140-20 to teh Bucs, although CB Conner Joseph ran back a pick for a score and our new studly TE caught his first TD pass. The Chargers trash us and then we beat the Jets 17-3 in our house. We emerge with several major injuries, including turf toe to MLB Siever.

Cross-state rivals Miami fall before us 24-12. TE Porto with another TD and CB Joseph with another pick and score off a return. We follow that with a loss in Indianapolis 24-37. Porto caught another TD pass. We just beat the 5-1 Titans 14-13 in our place. OG Murphy led the day with 4 KRB. We have a BYE in week 8 and then follow that with a horrible loss 14-34 against the then one win Bills. Connor Joseph had his 3rd pick returned for a score though.

So we finish the first half 3-5.

New England hammers us 48-14 in the next game. We host the 9-0 Texans and beat them 24-17 but it costs us FB Will Johnson is out for about 7 weeks. I go ahead and IR him and sign a bum from the street - Greg Jones will come back home. Connor Joseph had not one, but TWO picks returned for scores against the Texans. We follow that by being blasted on the road 26-13 in Cincinnati. Finally, we lose 19-20 against the Browns. Javier Porto grabbed a score.

So we are 4-8 for the first twelve games.

We host the 4-8 Falcons and emerge victorious, 20-17 in OT. Ryan Mundy with a pick-six. We follow that with a loss to Tennessee 10-38. We can;t even manage to defeat the 2 win Saints as we lose 24-31 - Porto with a TD grab. We finish on the road vs the 12-3 Texans, who want vengeance against us. We put up an effort but lose 17-31. Ah well.

So we finish 5-11. We improved our record at least!

Houston edges Green Bay 17-16 in the Super Bowl to win it all

Awards:

1st Team All Pro -

CB Connor Joseph

2nd Team -

P Pat McAfee

Stats:

RB Ahmad Bradshaw - 176 carries, 545, 1 score

WR Stanley Shannon - 62 catches, 682 yards, 3 scores
TE Javier Porto - 49, 606, 5 scores
WR Junior Shehee - 46, 430, and 3

Well, the Shehee experiment is over

Apparently, one of the Conner Joseph returns I mentioned was a Punt return kick returned for a score.

MLB Rich Siever, 93 solos, 3.5 sacks, 3 hurries
DE Lorenzo Casanova, 31 solos, 5 sacks, 2 blocked passes, 9 hurries,
WLB Bruce Irvin, 91 tack, 3 sacks, 1 block, 1 hurry, 1 knockdown, 8 pasdef, 3 FF

CB Conner Joseph, 7 picks, 4 returns for score, 11 pasdef
FS Ryan Mundy, 3 picks, 1 score, 10 pass def

This was Connor's break out performance, I hope. Very respectable numbers.

OG Ed Murphy - 32 KRB, 5 sacks allowed

He grew in both areas nicely. No one else had more than 11 KRB.

On to the off season!

We finish with a 57 rating

I retain our head coach.

I audible to a new offensive coordinator when one drops to us at 23. The new guy has a specialization for TEs, which I really want.

Time to hit free agency and lookie at the rookie

I take a look at the rookie pool, and players from WV schools seem weak. The best is a 5.3 rated safety. But then I looked at the top players in the draft to see if any came from WV and I was pleased at the results.

1. OT Rylan Johnson, from Wayne, WV, attended Tennessee. Has virtually no blocking strength bar, but great everywhere else. Considered the best OT in the draft. Very Overrated when interviewed. One red, one blue, and one green.

2. DE Lester Palmer, from Wayne, WV too. Went to SMU. 8th ranked DE. At first looked good, but post-interview, bars dropped down. Overrated. Two blue scores.

Not bad, but not the high quality talent I had elsewhere.

CB Connor Joseph is back down to 75/75. FB Johnson is up to 50/50. WLB Irvin dropped to 72/72. OG Ed Murphy's pass blocking rose again and he's at 73/73.

Chasing some targets and such.

I resign a couple of RFAs.

WR Tavon Austin had his contract extended by four years. 74/74 guy, young, but not hitting the market, and not trade-able because he's a fan favorite. Looks like the same happened with Geno Smith too - with his 43/46 self.

So I'm going to go ahead and chase a decent QB in the market ans see if I can reel him in - Matt Ryan, in the 50s. As a placeholder until the game makes a real QB from WV or Geno becomes available.

I increased my bid for Ryan and won him. I also got a new non-WV kicker.

Then I won a few new FAs -

SE Aaron Dobson, from South Charleston WV and played at Marshall, drafted by Patriots 4 years ago, now a FA. 44/44 guy.

DE Vinny Curry, from Marshall, 5th year pro, 33/33 guy

I also brought back Ahmad Bradshaw.

I have 13 draft selections - way too many to use well. I want to use my 1st on OT Johnson and hope he's still on the board at 1.7. I'd like to grab DE Palmer in the mid-2nd or early 3rd somewhere. After that, quality drops and the rest just don;t have a lot of value to me.

The 2017 NFL Draft

We manage to get our guy at 1.7. Two DEs are off the board already. Let's just hope and see. Two more DEs fall off the board at 9 and 11. Two more at 18 and 20. Another at 25.

We have a problem. In the 20s, four safeties fall after another went in the 13 spot. The one from WVU is left alone, isolated, and at the top. Both my DE and S are at the top of their respective boards. That S is not one with high hopes or anything. Several teams don;t have needs at the position and pass by our WVU guy, but Texans arrive at the 1.32 spot with just one S on their roster and S their strongest need. So I make a trade offer. I flip them S John Cyprien, two of my 3rd rounders this year, and a 3rd next year. I also get two future 6th round picks too.

I select our S, and then grab the DE at 2.6.

I trade away a few of my picks as they arrive for future picks. Not a lot of depth in this year's draft.

Draft Report:

1st - OT Rylan Johnson, Wayne, WV
1st - S Edwin Laird, S, WVU
2nd - DE Lester Palmer, Wayne, WV
3rd - CB Abraham Dennis, WVU
5th - OT Weston Kochansky, WVU
5th - DE Liam Akers, Marshall
6th - C Oscar Martinez, Marshall
6th - OG Sebastian Camudgeon, WVU
7th - OT Donny Reagan, WVU
7th - S Randal Wiggins, WVU

I do not have high hopes for this class. I would not have drafted Laird, Palmer or Johnson in other dynasties -but you have to do what you have to do.

Post Draft - I have a holdout from my non-WV WR (Darrius Heyward-Bey). I cut him.

I sign some bums and UFAs to get my roster ready for Camp.

Camp Time!

SS Edwin Laird is rocking a 27/36 - I just hope he's a grower, not a shower.
DE Lester Palmer - 28/51 - Which is not too bad for a 2nd round selection, especially if he grows a bit.
OT Rylan Johnson is at 27/5 and busted a bit, so let's hope he's good enough to not suck.
CB Abraham Dennis - 31/44

Others of note:

TE Porto - 79/79
CB Joseph - 77/77
OG Murphy - 73/73
WLB Irvin - 72/72

FS Ryan Mundy has risen to 50/50! The 8th year pro is now increasing his value.

Your 2016 Jacksonville Jaguars:

RB Ahmad Bradshaw - Until someone better comes along or develops...

FB Will Johnson - Still a solid choice

TE Javier Porto - Our offensive stud continues

FL Stanley Shannon - Who's a fully developed 28/28 receiver?

SE Aaron Dobson - The FA pickup will start for us. 44/44

OT Rylan Johnson - Let's hope the rookie fares better than he looks

OG Ed Murphy - Two strong seasons should hopefully convert to a studly one coming up.

C Percy Johnson - UFA from West Virginia Tech Just beat out other rookie with a much better run blocking, but 0 pass blocking and 17/33 overall.

OG Selvish Capers - 29/34 guy will start for us - still weak tho'

OT Weston Kochansky - Another rookie starts too, with his sexy 19/37 self

P Pat McAfee - Three consecutive All Pros baby!

DE Lester Palmer - I'm not as concerned about him now as I was in the draft, so let's see if he can prove us worthy.

DT Chris Neild - While he has a lackluster season last year, he's my best option.

DE Lorenzo Casanova - Didn't have a sterling rookie year 95 sacks was not too shabby tho') but let's hope he;s learned and built from it.

SLB JT Thomas - Just a body

MLB Rich Siever - As is he

WLB - Bruce Irvin - But he is not, he rocks the body. Like Moby.

CB Abraham Dennis - I'm giving him the nod over slightly more developed options since he has the most upside.

CB Conner Joseph - No question here.

SS Edwin Laird - OMG.

FS Ryan Mundy - Developed into a solid enough FS. I sign him for another two years.

Alright, let's get squelchy!
