Was just reading they will stay behind bars while waiting to be sentenced. Several charges carry 20 year max sentences. I hope they make an example of them. 4 years or some BS like that would be a mockery.

So am I understanding correctly that microchips for the brain are only bad if they are made by anyone but Elon Musk? They forgot that caveat when they were making up stories about Bill Gates.

He reminds me a bit of when Dennis Rodman went over the edge - except, that was mostly harmless (although I do recall, beyond the tattoos, cross-dressing, etc., he did actually wade into politics a bit with that North Korea thing).

Looks like the house judiciary committee finally took down its "Kanye. Elon. Trump" tweet from a couple of months ago. Good job YE!

The Republican congress people that are speaking out against McCarthy as speaker have a "secret" candidate fir the job they are not pitting forward yet. It is going to be Trump, almost certainly.

I hope they take it to the Supreme Court so we can find out what justices rule that Trump gets to be treated totally different from every other citizen.

And if anyone feels sympathy toward the man, his ex-wife and children have come out and said he was an abusive father. Not really surprising but this isn't the case of some guy who just went a little too far.

They've been talking about this for 2 years. It may be someone else just as LOLworthy, but this is simply an "owning the libs" move because they can. This would be the highest form of entertainment for them.

Trump also lost today at the DOJ "secret" Grand Jury created to look at Jan 6. He had tried to assert that lawyers Cippolini and Philbin had executive privledge and could not testify on what Trump said in the days leading up to Jan 6 and on that day. Judge smacked that down and ordered them to testify before the Grand Jury.

Ironically, Musk suspending Ye's account is probably just more proof to the anti-semites that Jews control everything. He preaches free speech, but as soon as someone says something negative about Jews, he goes back on his principles because he's forced to!

Not sure if this belongs here or the Social Media thread, but a bunch of people are reporting that their accounts unfollowed @holocaustmuseum on Twitter at some point without their knowledge.

Coincidence, right?

Don't know if you were watching the ceremony for the Capitol Police and other law enforcement for their efforts on Jan 6, but pretty good response at the end.

McConnell and McCarthy for some reason were asked to give a speech there, and then be part of a procession shaking hands, and giving out awards. Almost everyone of the Capitol Police totally ignored them both.

I've got a 14 year old. It's a vulnerable age.

Her dad's an asshole, but people need to leave her alone and out of the news.

There's nothing newsworthy about this. I hope she gets the help she needs.

Ehh....

She came out as bi and stated she disagrees with her Dad on everything. Seems like a pretty good example of how the rights views, especially recent ones, and attacks on the LGBTQ community has real world effects on kids. I'm not saying anything we all don't know, but suicide rates for these kids are through the roof, largely because they don't get the support they need from the family.

I realize I am making assumptions, but she seems to be proof of this.

I hope she gets the help needed and doesn't become a political pawn.

She's already a political pawn, she's the daughter of Ted "Shitbag" Cruz.

The right would jibe and poke fun if this was a Democrat family. But the right will claim victimization and woke-hood and state this is why females should be silent and obedient church-going, kitchen baking baby making subjects and when they aren't, it's leftism.

She'll be quietly ostracized by her family for making daddy look bad and years later she'll be a footnote as the black sheep.

She may get help but the reality is she's the daughter of Ted Cruz, that stain never goes away.

Pretty accurate

On right wing boards being LGBTQ is talked about as a mental health issue that needs be cured with therapy and medication and teens are only coming out because it's the cool thing to do in their age group.

I can't speak much to right wing boards, but I asked two of my coworkers about this and I don't think they had any reason to lie to me in their responses. This was back when we used to go into the office and do things like go out to lunch. These are guys I get along with on a lot of stuff and, while I'd be hesitant to call any coworkers "friends", per se - they're two that I share a lot of interests with, even if politically, we're quite different.

One was talking about how his daughter or maybe granddaughter thought she might be gay or bi and they started talking about that disparagingly. I asked them a couple of questions to expand on their thoughts and got what I thought were 2 different viewpoints. But I also tried to be non-confrontational and non-judgemental in talking with them as I wanted to get as unvarnished an opinion as I could, but I still lightly challenged some of what they said.

Here's some of the commonalities and some of the differences that I remembered:
  • The coworker whose relative it was through it was a choice. Like she was just choosing to do that because her head was filled by bad people around her, etc. Also, it was just going to be a fad or phase she was going through. He didn't seem to
  • Also, he's born again religious and he condemns it on those grounds - but I think that's more a convenient excuse than serious dogma. I've had some long conversations with him about other religious topics and he's a bit, um, selective about what he chooses to believe from the Bible. He's not showy - he's not going to tell you that he's religious the first time you meet him - but he has some very deeply held beliefs but I also think he hasn't been religious long enough to have to confront some of the major contradictions of faith. He has also informed me how the Pope is wrong a number of times, which is just kindof funny to me.
  • The other thought it was more of a birth defect. I mean, on the one hand, I guess that's, in a way, more perceptive in that it admits that it's something genetic and inborn instead of a choice (as one of my neighbors has said to me sarcastically "Yes, I chose this 'lifestyle' and the discrimination and the not being able to get married until a few years ago"). However, he also wasn't exactly against eugenics to get it out of the population.
  • I think both of them are the type that think it's more ok for women than men. Though I think the former is more of the whole "women just haven't me the right dude yet and I could totally turn her straight and/or get a threesome" while both are like "ew, dude buttseks - that's repugnant and it's like having sex with animals and kids" line of thinking.
Again, I didn't want to get too confrontational as I wanted to hear their actual unvarnished thoughts and, also because these are people I've worked with for years and will likely continue working with for years. They were also both aware that I don't feel the same way but that this wasn't me trying to go "gotcha" on them, but rather understand their points of view more.

Very very cautiously optimistic here, but several court observers who I trust have been listening to the oral arguments in Moore v. Harper, and they think that there are not five votes for the Independent State Legislature theory.

That would be great news. Every single legal theory behind Trump's attempted coup required some version of that theory. Getting rid of it would take a big arrow out of the insurrectionist quiver.

I don't post on right wing boards or anything but I do browse on occasion to see some of their unfiltered viewpoints.

The stuff you got from coworkers is in line with what I read. Fad is something I see a lot of when discussing LBGTQ issues in teens.

There also seems to be a belief that any gay male is a sex offender or certain to be a future sex offender which is why they refer to gay teachers as groomers.

That would be great news. Every single legal theory behind Trump's attempted coup required some version of that theory. Getting rid of it would take a big arrow out of the insurrectionist quiver.

I, too, am cautiously optimistic we might have avoided the express train straight to fascism and, instead, we can take a more scenic route

Thomas is going to contradict the reasoning he used for Bush v Gore in his Moore v Harper decision.

Seems like the case should be getting more publicity. It essentially ends democratically elected representation in this country.

I think most of us have lowkey been worrying this could be the moment where our homegrown fascism gets legally legitimized.

But that's a hard one to sell in a 30 second sound bite
