Can someone explain what the beef was between coaches? I can't find a good explanation outside of people saying Beilama was being a prick.

What I got was Bielema was subbing late throughout the game to slow down South Carolina and Beamer was complaining to the officials about it. When one of Illinois' players went down with an injury late in the 3rd Bielema walked out to him and then looked at Beamer and started making the sign officials use for substitution. It was a taunt, he should have been flagged, but wasn't. Beamer came unglued and walked out onto the field yelling at him.

Really weird thing to see and Bielema was in the wrong but I felt it was mostly overblown.

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer needed to be restrained from pursuing Illinois coach Bret Bielema during a stoppage in the third quarter after Bielema came toward South Carolina's sideline with his arms extended, a signal to them that he was not happy with a signal given earlier in the game.

Beamer and Beielema confirmed the dispute was over a signal South Carolina's kick returners gave on a third-quarter kickoff when a player gave the typical signal they would let the ball go over their head and not return the ball. But the Gamecocks not only fielded the kick, but tried a lateral play that ended with a tackle at the 25.

Beamer said he cleared the use of that signal with the Big 12 officiating crew before the game and that it was legal, as long as the returners did not wave their arms like a fair catch. Bielema agreed that returning the kick was not against the rules, but went against the spirit of using that signal to limit injuries on kickoff returns.

I think we need to appreciate the magic of the college football playoff, where a #3 seed like Boise State can be taken down by a lesser seed in #6 Penn State. Always remember, just because a team is higher seeded, they still have to play the game on the field!

I had to google the Boise State coach before the game because I got the impression by his pre game interview he was in way over his head. Doesn’t look like it ever really got better for him. Atleast he has religion to fall back on if this football thing doesn’t work out for him. Seems to be his priority over football anyway.
