"Candidates for president must: Be a natural-born citizen of the United States. Be at least 35 years old. Have been a resident of the United States for 14 years."
Those are the only rules of eligibility for President. You could be in federal prison for capital murder, and still be elected president.

It was never added to the Constitution. I don't think the framers or even those who wrote later amendments ever thought that there would ever be anyone that would garner enough votes to win with a felony conviction.

There has been reporting today that Trump's lawyers are meeting with the Special Counsel today to persuade him to not persecute.

It's probably unlikely he'll ever agree to any kind of plea because the indictment and even a conviction ensures him of millions of more dollars in fundraising/grifting and martyr status amongst his followers, but at this point, I think I'd be willing to entertain an agreement where he's spared any kind of detention if he agrees to never run for any office again for the rest of his life.

There have been some of his people that floated he would be willing to take that plea, but I don't buy it. I think they want the prosecutor to offer that so they can parade it around as proof the charges are politically motivated.

That's certainly the spin. The other way to look at it is he's so dangerous when in a position of power that we'd rather forego putting him in jail than risk him being elected again.

I wouldn't. I think that:

- It's more important, not less, to prosecute people who have power and abuse it.
- Trump himself is not the problem from an election standpoint. The problem is his supporters - or arguably, a system that gives them as much power as they have - and that problem doesn't go away if Trump doesn't run. There's nothing stopping another version of him from filling the void.

I get what you're saying, but Trump is a unique personality and I don't think someone can be as effective simply filling that void by trying to be him. DeSantis can't do it. Josh Hawley or Ted Cruz certainly ain't gonna do it.

I don't disagree with your point - I certainly want him to pay for any crimes he is convicted of. But I'd also not like to see the snowball's chance in hell of him becoming president again. The McConnell thing just illustrates that we're one Biden medical episode in September of 2024 of the entire race suddenly being thrown into chaos.

There is going to be another indictment announced today, but it is going to be another charge in the documents case. They are also adding another defendant.

Obstruction of justice. He ordered an employee to delete camera footage after it had been subpoenaed.

Also hilarious that Trump--one of the most famously tight-fisted people alive--is going out of his way to pay for lawyers for anyone and everyone in his orbit who might have an incentive to cooperate against him. This is apparently out of the goodness of his heart.

Haberman dropped a tidbit that he had to ask for something like a 40-60M refund from his PAC to pay for lawyers.

Grant, I know someone who has been in and around classified documents his whole adult life and worked in the White House when the Clintons were there and just can't stand her. Says she should be in jail for the rest of her life over what she did with the documents.

He was pretty gung-ho for Trump too, but when he was here over the holidays I almost couldn't believe my ears when he called Trump the worst President ever. So some Conservatives can change I guess

Some are changing and some are digging in their heels. Luckily, I firmly believe it's not a huge percentage that are digging in their heels. I guess we'll see soon, because only complete morons would vote for Trump at this point, and yes I mean that with my full chest.

I still say that's not meaningfully more true now than it was in 2016. The gap between 2016 Trump and a decent presidential candidate is far, far greater than the gap between 2016 Trump and 2023 Trump.

It's such a small thing, but I love how Trump always adds "me" to his "your favorite President" line.

I think that is it directly on Trump. We'll, except there is still possible indictments in the documents case in other venues.

A nice trifecta.

FYI 4 in a row is superfecta.

If he wins, the next constitutional crisis will be "can a President pardon himself".

So what is the likelihood he stalks all these trials and /or gets convicted in a few then gets elected and pardons himself. I am starting to think he cosnsiders a way to get votes on the right. The first NY Times poll came out today and Biden Trump were each at 43 % with 14 % saying they will either vote 3rd party or still not decided. Geez our the Democrats going to screw this up ?
