1975 Offseason thread
The fool classic is over and everyone is taking their final shots are re-signing potential free agents. This upcoming free agent class might not be as strong as the last two years, but still quite alot of good players still yet to be re-signed (including 3 time MVP Rick Inman)

And just for fun to pass the time.. some random trivia facts:
Q: Who in FOOL history has hit the most cycles in their career? A: Former New York leftfielder Mike Tomlinson has hit for the cycle an amazing three times in his career. Q: Which team has had the most pitchers throw a no-hitter in FOOL history? A: Four different teams have had two different pitchers throw a no-hitter for them. Baltimore, Compton, Brooklyn and Charleston all have had multiple pitchers throw a no-hitter. If you want to base it on franchises, the Toronto franchise had a no-hitter pitched when they were based in Providence and another one when the team was in Long Beach Island, but none since their move to Toronto. Speaking of technicalities, Charleston as mentioned previously had two different pitchers throw a no-hitter for them, but that team later moved to Atlanta where a third pitcher threw a no-hitter in that franchise history to make them the winner. Q: Which pitcher has the record for most strikeouts in a game? A: Joel Nelson, previously of Brooklyn struck out 19 opposing batters in a game vs Charleston back in 1966. Q: What is the record for most consecutive games with a hit? A: 28 by Ed Wilson formerly of Gary/Valdosta. This record has stood since the 1961 season without anyone coming within 5 games in the last 5 seasons. Q: Which pitcher has the all time record for the most games pitched? A: Orlando Diaz currently of Quad City, and formerly of Providence, Charleston, Long Beach Island, Toronto, Hartford, Quad City once before heading to Brooklyn and then back to Quad City again has the record. He has pitched in 749 games which is amazing when you consider in the entire history of FOOL, there has been only 2156 total games. He has pitched in 35% of the games in the history of this league. |

Thanks for taking the time to do that Alan. That was a good read. The stat on Orlando Diaz is amazing. Pitching in 35% of the games in Fool History blows my mind. I think its also neat that he has been that good, especially from going team to team like that. |

DanGarion is taking over Brooklyn. Commo is busier with ROTC and life stuff, so he told me he was gonna go on hiatus and if someone else come in, to pass them on.
The expansion deal would add two more teams for HA and Chief for if/when it's voted on. |

Oh and red-headed stepchild update.. Up into the top 40 now. Maybe the AI is smarter than me after all. I didn't figure he would amount to much. |

I have no idea what we're doing this off-season in Quad City. We'll be doing something. Just not sure exactly what, yet. Should be a barn burner, tho.

For the first time in about 7 years I can actually re-sign everyone if I want to... The question is do I want to committ another $40million to a 33 year old? Do I want to keep paying another 32 year old an additional $50 mil? Do I want to re-sign a 30 year old catcher with falling ratings for another 4 years? |

Since giving out cash isn't as sexy here, the playoff shares thing is dead for now.
But the 2nd place teams until we get to divisional setup will be eligible for the Republic Shield or the Continental Cup, awarded by the Commissioner's office for 2nd place teams. If there is a tie, head to head record determines it. Or a one-game playoff. How's that for drama? The only teams that would actually bother to put up banners for said award, are those without any, of course. You can be bad ass and decline said banner. But in an era where teams invent banners and patches to display, I say, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Last edited by Young Drachma : 09-08-2008 at 05:45 PM. |

Fresh from the league office...
I figured that Atlanta wouldn't want to post theirs, after winning a league title the year before. But Columbus would, given the surprise success. Clarify for me, owners and I'll do your bidding. And congrats. |

The funny thing is in Georgia I am sure more people will want to buy Atlanta's Continental League Cup t-shirts than that other Georgia team's FOOL Classic shirts

Apparently Zazzle has a caching layer or two and it's not showing up everywhere. (I just now created it on the spur of the moment.) http://img.skitch.com/20080909-dh4qu...f7gfejqy8r.jpg is more or less what you would see if it were working. Ah well. Too much effort for a gag. |

Yeah, zazzle's not cheap. Nor will they let you waive commission. I tried to set it to 0% so I wouldn't make any money off DC's graphic if anyone did feel the silly need to buy one, but... couldn't! grr! Last edited by kaosfere : 09-08-2008 at 10:25 PM. |

Oh for frak's sake. Remind me not to sign FA's to a one-year deal with a player option on year two before the classic, please?
*gets jilted by a guy who was on the payroll for less than a month but still crushes the fans when he leaves* What a rook move. I shake my head at myself. Last edited by kaosfere : 09-08-2008 at 10:36 PM. |

SP Benny Myers did not even return my calls! I would be mad since he was the only SP worth a damn, but I guess he had enough of my crappy rotation. Now, I'm really scared for my team & hope I can get 300 HR instead of 245 just to maintain. I might as well get a pitching machine up on the mound for this year!
Well, there always FA's to be had...I think...

The Highlanders are looking for a ML or AAA catcher we can use for a few seasons.
Josh Robinson looks to need another year at AA and probably one at AAA before he will be ready for prime time. In other news, the 75 in 75 plan is well under way. I am actually quite optimistic that I can put together a competent team this season and I have a lot of talent like Robinson coming through my system. |

Right now, it looks like Tadakuni Minami is making New York's ample Asian community very excited. Looking to the future, Chris Palmer should have it all, speed, power and leather, and mammoth whiffs in abundance too. Already popular with those who follow the team closely, look for him to emerge as a superstar as the decade nears its close. ps thanks for the flyer! Look for it under windshields in the tri state area all winter long. |

No, it's not. I'll vacate those contracts. The loophole here I suspect is that those players CAME from the VL. So it views them as natives, as opposed to suspect interlopers from our league. And they were affordable, unlike most of our FAs to them.
