Week 8 Info:

Randy is surprisingly 100%.

Bennie is still doubtful due to his clavicle injury.

WR Billy Kelley has a severely sprained ankle. He is doubtful.

C Eric Evans broke two ribs. He is questionable.

C Kevin Tripucky is probable with his neck injury.

CB Dwone Secules is probable with his stress fracture.

Good news, FS Jonathan Green is 100% despite the little injury he picked up last game.

Notable Stats:

Randy's QB Rtg is quite a bit lower than last year. It is 144.0. He is currently 15th among starters (but last among those starters in yardage with 830.)

Terry Smith's big day now has him tied for 3rd in the nation in sacks with 6.

Don Brookins is 10 in tackles among DB's with 43.

Polls (will start top 10 coverage next week):

That win vaulted us to 8th in the polls with a 5-1 record. Only Penn State and Georgia are still undefeated (both 6-0.)

Depth Chart Changes:

Bennie remains out.

Billy Kelley is removed from the depth chart due to his ankle injury. Jerry Jones gets the start, and Dick Sayers becomes the #3 receiver with Cliff Bell getting the #4 slot.

C Eric Evans is removed from the depth chart, but Kevin Tripucka gets the start as he is mostly recovered from his injury.

Since Dwone isn't 100%, but our current 3rd cornerback isn't that good, I'll have Dwone backup both corner positions. However, I'll keep Brian DeMulling as the primary Nickelback for one more week.

Preview and Gameplanning to follow tomorrow.

Preview:

Today we host Kentucky as the 2nd part of our away and home series. Kentucky has had an explosive offense this year that is 23rd in the nation led by star QB Clayotn Dillon who is a super sophomore just like Randy Collins. Clayon is a nifty scrambler, with a very accurate arm. He has completed 67% of his passes this year for almost 1300 yards 9 TD's and 3 INT's. Our offense is ranked only slightly lower as we are 24th. Our defense is ranked 11th which is slightly better than theirs which is ranked 16th. They are led by Siddeeq Ayanbadejo who is a sophmore who has a chance to be a great player. He has 2 sacks and 3 hurries on the year, but he is a skille dpass rusher.

We are 5 point favorites at home

Gameplanning:

With Randy back, my offensive coordinator wants to go back to a pass first offense. I agree.

Our defensive coordiator wants us to take a basic balanced approach which I agree with.

We have 92,000 fans here today.

We start with the ball, but they sack Randy on 3rd and 8 and we have to punt.

We force a 3 and out.

We put together a 94 yard drive which ends with a 6 yard TD pass from Randy to Malcolm on the wheel route out of the backfield. 7-0. Randy was 5 of 5 for 62 yards on that drive.

We stop them after a short drive.

We manage to move the ball about 35 yards and connect on a 52 yard FG. 10-0.

End of 1: 10-0 lead for us.

We stop them after a short drive.

We drive inside the 35, and then connect on a long FG after they stop us on 3rd and 14th. 13-0.

We force a 3 and out.

After a few short passes, Malcolm Maston dodges one defender, runs up field, dodges another defender, and takes off. 67 yard TD run! 20-0.

They put together their first long drive of the day, but we stop them just inside the 10. They connect on a 27 yard FG. 20-3 with just under a minute left in the half.

We drive across the 40, before time runs out.

Halftime: 20-3 lead for us. Randy's halftime stats: 11 of 14 for 118 yards, 1 TD O INT.

Terry Smith with a key tackle to prevent them from converting a 3rd and 5. We end up forcing them to punt.

We exchange several failed drives, before they put together a long drive of 92 yards, but we stop them inside the 10. They settle for a 25 yard FG. 20-6.

We are stopped on 3rd and 7 when Randy throws a perfect pass that Wes Nelson drops.

They put together an 80 yard drive which ends in a TD run by their star HB Hoak. 20-13 with a minute left in the 3rd.

End of 3: USC 20 - Kentucky 13.

Dick Sayers is hurt on the first play of the quarter. He had been having a good game.

DE Jimmy Banks sacked Randy on 3rd and 11 and forces us to punt.

We injure their star HB Richie Hoak on the first play of the drive.

Kevin Putnam with a key sack on 3rd and 4, forces a punt.

Randy with a few key passes and a scramble to convert a 3rd down, but we get stopped just outside the 20. We connect on a 37 yard FG. 23-13 with 9 minutes left.

Terry Smith pressures their QB and forces the QB to overthrow the 3rd and 3 pass. They end up punting.

Randy leads a masterful drive for 65 yards which he ends with a 5 yard TD pass to Lennox Franklin. 30-13 with 3 minutes left in the game.

Jonathan Green injures himself while tackling their HB. Why did we leave him in there?

2 plays later, LaVern Alexander intercepts the QB's pass.

We run the ball for 3 first downs and run out the clock.

Game over. 30-13.

Pros: Randy stayed healthy. Solid, but not great game from our QB. The defense played well against a good offense.

Cons: Jonathan was hurt (again.)

Week 9:

Very unfortunate news, SS Don Brookins has been suspended for the next 3 weeks due to academic problems.

Also suspended were backup HB Ryan Donckers and WR Lamar Woods.

FB Louis Liske is now eligible to play as he has raised his grades.

Injury Report:

QB Bennie Brady is progressing well from his dislocated clavicle. He'll return to #2 status in a week or so, but I see no reason to rush him back this week.

WR Mike Maddox suffered a head laceration, but is probable this week.

WR Dick Sayers suffered a torn groin muscle and may miss the rest of the season.

OG Troy Johnson suffered a pulled quadriceps. He is probable this week.

C Eric Evans is recovering well from his broken ribs, but he would probably benefit from another week off.

C Kevin Triupucka is recovering from his injured neck, and is still probable.

CB Dwone Secules is still recovering from his stress fracture in his foot, and is probable.

FS Jonathan Green suffered a severely bruised kidney. He is doubtful for this week, and we will therefore be missing both starting safeties.

WR Billy Kelley is completely recovered from his ankle injury.

Depth Chart Issues:

With Ryan suspended, Lawrence Armstrong becomes our #3 RB.

Liske becomes our #2 FB again.

Billy Kelley takes over as the starting SE again. Jerry Jones becomes our #3 receiver again.

With both starting safeties out, I decide to move Dwone Secules into the starting lineup again.

Jonathan Green is only going to come in if Brian DeMulling and Ben Bruschi goes out. Ben is a big step down from Brian, so hopefully, Brian can stay healthy all game.

Courtney Carlton is going to get a start at SS.

Polls:

1. LSU 7-1 (37-7 win over Arkansas)
2. Georgia 7-0 (24-17 win over Miss. State)
3. Minnesota 7-1 (27-17 win over Indiana)
4. Penn State 6-1 (44-41 loss against Michigan State) - Dropped from 2nd place.
5. USC 6-1
6. Oregon State 6-1 (36-22 win over Wash State)
7. Nebraska 6-1 (17-14 loss against Kansas) - dropped from 5th.
8. Miami 6-1 (45-10 win against Duke)
9. Wisconsin 6-1 (37-20 win over Michigan)
10. Texas 6-1 (34-13 win over Baylor)

I've seen display issues with the PBP occasionally. It definitely could use some fine tuning, but I still have a blast watching my games play out.

BB hasn't been bad backing up for your boy this year I've noticed. He's cut down on his mistakes and learned unlike a certain Wyoming QB I could name *cough*CoreyBramlet*cough*

Agreed. Bennie has done a nice job as the backup and probably would have started if Randy wasn't such a potentially great young player.

Preview:

Today we travel to play Stanford. They are 2-5 and should be an easy win for us, but we've fallen into that trap in previous years. Their offense is 76th in the nation. Their defense is 94th. Our offense is 25th and our defense is 14th. Their top player is Sophmore TE Fred Schwedes who has 5 catches for 60 yards on the year. Clearly, he has been underperforming, but he has also missed 3 games with injuries.

Bill Hoernschemeyer is a good defensive end who has 2 sacks and 4 hurries on the year, and he is the leader of their defense.

Gameplanning:

Our OC wants a pass first offense, and I agree.

Our DC wants us to blitz the young QB quite a bit, and I agree.

We are 21 point favorites despite being on the road.

They have just under 57,000 fans here today.

Billy Kelley with a good return to give us the ball on our own 40 to start the drive.

Randy overthrows Kelley on a deep pass that would have been 6.

Their defense doesn't look that talented, but we fail to convert a 3rd and 6 and end up punting from their 40.

We force a 3 and out. Our D-Line looked good on that short drive.

Horn-what's-his-name gets a sack on Randy on 3rd and 7 to force a 4th down. That was a crushing hit, but Randy shakes it off.

We stop them after a 20 yard drive, and they punt.

We put together a nice 53 yard drive which ends when Malcolm drops a 3rd and 3 pass. They block the 49 yard FG attempt.

We force a 3 and out, and they punt as the 1st quarter runs out.

End of 1: 0-0 tie.

We have a short drive, but are unable to convert a 3rd and 10. Randy's troubles against some poor CB's is distressing.

They have good field position after that blocked FG. They drive 20 yards down inside our 30, but penalties push them back outside the 30.

Their QB Michael Robinson hits his WR on a deep 35 yard pass to get the ball inside the 5.

LaVern Alexander knocks down the 3rd and goal from the 5 pass. They end up with a 23 yard FG. 3-0 Stanford lead.

Randy overthrows Kelley on an out pattern. I can't believe it.

Randy underthrows Franklin on the next play...

Lennox Franklin dropped a perfect throw on 3rd down, and we end up punting..

We blow coverage on their first play, and their QB connects on a 66 yard TD pass to White, their WR. 10-0 lead.

We get a 20 yard run from Wes Nelson to start the drive, but an underthrown pass, then a 3 yard pass, then an overthrown pass lead to a punt! If Bennie was healthy, I might put him in at this point.

We stop them after a short drive. However, they get a monster punt to pin us back inside our 5.

Randy finally starts connecting on passes, he hits 4 of 5 passes including a 53 yard TD to Lennox Franklin! 10-7 with just under a minute in the half.

Halftime: 10-7 lead for Stanford. I was afraid of this, but didn't expect it. We're playing down to our competition. Missing our starting safeties is really hurting as well.

Halftime stats for Randy: 9 of 18 for 124 yards and a TD.

We force a 3 and out on their first drive of the 2nd half.

Randy connects on a pass with Lennox Franklin, but he is creamed by their FS and he fumbles the ball. Stanford recovers and gets the ball at midfield.

We stop them just outside the 35. They connect on a 52 yard FG. 13-7.

Billy Kelley with a good kick return to get us to our 38.

They stop us just short of a 3rd and 8. We go for it on 4th and 2 and gain 11 yards on a screen pass to Malcolm.

Randy then connects with Malcolm for a 35 yard gain in which Malcolm really juked out the defense. 2 plays later, Wes Nelson runs it in from 7 yards out. 14-13.

Backup SS Courtney Carlton (who started today) intercepts a deep ball, gets some blocking, makes a good move, and returns the interception 70 yards for a TD!!! 21-13.

A few plays into their drive, Terry Smith causes a fumble and my young DT Joshua Lewis recovers it!

They stop us just inside the 15, and we end up kicking the 32 yard FG. 24-13 we lead.

End of 3: 24-13 USC Lead.

We force a 3 and out.

Chukky Odom with a few good runs on this drive, I might need to give our FB's some more carries..

Very balanced 72 yard drive which ends in a 1 yard TD run by Wes Nelson! 31-13.

Our defense gets a bit lazy and gives up a few plays, but we stop them short of the 50 and force a punt. Dwone Secules with a good punt return and a personal foul starts us back at the 50.

We pound the ball down the field, but get stopped short just outside the 25. We settle for a 42 yard FG. 34-13 with 3 minutes left.

We play back on defense and give up a slow methodical drive down the field, but it's using up all of the remaining time..

We finally force an incompletion on 4th and 6 with 2 seconds left.

Game over. 34-13 win.

Pros: Generally very good defense (except for a few big plays.) Randy had a few good drives.

Cons: Their corners weren't very good, but Randy was still inconsistent. That is concerning. Overall, Randy did have a good game.

Notable Stats:

Randy's QB Rtg is now 143.9 which is 20th in the nation.

Depth Chart Issues:

QB Bennie Brady is back as the #2 QB.

No other changes.

Polls:

1. LSU 8-1 (28-17 win over #25 Ole Miss)
2. Georgia 8-0 (27-10 win over Vanderbilt)
3. Penn State 7-1 (44-7 win over Northwestern)
4. USC 7-1 (up from #5)
5. Minnesota 7-1 (drops from #3 despite beating Indiana 27-17)
6. Oregon State 7-1 (24-22 win over #17 Arizona!!! Good for me as it helps me contend for the conference.)

8. Wisconsin 7-1 (30-27 win over #18 Purdue)
9. Clemson 7-1 (59-13 win over Wake Forest)
10. Nebraska 7-1 (39-32 win over Colorado.)

Preview:

Today we play Washington on the road. Washington is 4-3. Their offense is very good (19th) and is led by Clem Sirmon who is a very good running back. He has 609 yards rushing with 9 TD's and also has 250 yards receiving.

The sophmore was one of the top 100 players in the nation when he was in HS and he is only going to get better.

The defense is ranked 72nd and is led by star lineback Tony Thomas. The senior has 64 tackles, 4 sacks, and 1 interception on the year.

Our offense is ranked 26th, but our defense is ranked much better (15th.)

Gameplanning:

My OC wants us to run a pass first offense, but get Bennie a few snaps this game. I agree with both parts of the plan.

Our DC wants us to run the a vanilla 4-3 primarily, with a bit of blitzing. I agree.

We are 12 point favorites on the road.

They have 70,000 fans here today.

It's raining lightly.

They fumble the opening kickoff and Pat Davenport, our starting OLB recovers it!

Malcolm Maston with a quick cutback finds a seam and runs it in from 16 yards out! 7-0.

Wow! Their kickoff returner fumbles it again. Mike Maddox recovers the fumble!

Lennox Franklin hurts his quad while blocking and he will be out for the rest of the day.

We settle for a 28 yard FG attempt, but miss it wide left!

Joshua Lewis sacks their QB and forces a fumble, but Washington recovers it. We force them to punt the next play.

On the 3rd play of our drive, Wes Nelson hurdles a defender, spins away from another defender, and runs it in from 43 yards out! 14-0.

We stop them short of the 50, and force a punt.

Chukky with a good 11 yard run on the 1st play. I definitely am going to tell the OC to call a few more plays for him in the future.

We drive to the 50, but get stopped short on a 3rd and 3. We end up punting.

We force a 3 and out.

End of 1: 14-0 lead for us, and we are driving down the field.

Tony Thomas sacks Randy on a 3rd and 4, and we end up attempting a 48 yard FG which we make. 17-0.

Clem Sirmon is a key contributor to a 50 yard drive which ends in a 4 yard TD run. 17-7.

First play of the drive, MLB Gil Dyer sacks Randy, and he fumbles it. Tony Thomas recovers for Wash.

We stop them on 3 plays, and they attempt a 37 yard FG which they miss.

After 2 good runs by Wes, Randy is sacked by Tony Thomas. The linebacker is killing us with his blitzes.

They stop us at around midfield.

They try a fake punt on 4th and 3 from our 43, but we stop the run just short of a 1st.

Wes Nelson with 3 short runs to get a first, before he breaks off a 34 yard TD run! 24-7 with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Wes already has 10 carries for 128 yards and 2 TD's. He is having his best game by far.

Their kickoff returner finally does something right for them with a 75 yard kickoff return.

Terry Smith with a big sack on 2nd and goal from the 4.

The next play Nat Jackson connects with WR Eddie Royal for an 8 yard Td. Terry Smith hurt his toe on the play, and has to leave the game. 24-14 with 30 seconds left in the half.

Randy hurts his foot handing the ball off, and it doesn't look like Randy will return!

Halftime: 24-14 lead. Randy's stats: 6 of 8 for 78 yards. 0 TD 0 INT.

DT Theron Favre sacks Walter Liddiard who was in there on 3rd and 8. We end up connecting on a 51 yard FG. 27-14 with 10 minutes to go.

They run the ball down our throat during an 80 yard drive which ends with a 2 yard TD run by Sirmon. 27-21.

Kelley gets called for offensive pass interference to negate a 20 yard completion.

They force a 3 and out as we can't work our way back from the long down.

Their punt returner, Jamie Gillian (who has fumbled the kickoffs), fumbles the punt return, but they recover.

End of 3: USC 27 - Wash 21 with Wash driving.

Two plays later, Nat Jackson hits Salisbury for a 15 yard TD reception. 28-27 Washington.

1st play of the drive, Bennie hits Billy for a 43 yard reception in which Billy broke two tackles!

A holding call against Troy Johnson kills our drive as we cross midfield, forcing a 2nd and 16.

Bennie makes a perfect pass to try to convert a 3rd and 12, but Billy drops it. We end up punting.

Nat Jackson hits Don Salisbury for a 93 yard TD! Dwone Secules was hurt on the play, and that didn't help his coverage. 35-27 Washington

Bennie overthrows Wes Nelson on 3rd and 4 to force a 3 and out. We punt the ball, and they get good field positon at their own 40.

We force a 3 and out. We get the ball on our own 21 with 8 minutes to go.

Bennie overthrows on a 3rd and 5 and we have to punt

6 minutes left and they have it on their 20.

We get a 2nd on 2nd and 4 to force a 3rd and 11 which they can't convert.

We get a great punt return and have the ball on their 34!

Bennie Brady hits Jerry Jones in stride on the 1st play for a TD! 35-35 after Brady throws a lob to Jerry Jones for the 2 pt conversion!

Freshman DT Brad Adams with a 12 yard sack to slow down their drive!

That forces a 3rd and 22 which they can't convert. WE get the punt on our own 31 with 2 and a half minutes left.

Brady overthrows Malcolm on 3rd and 4 and we have to punt. We pin them back on their 7 with just over a 1 minute 20 left.

LaVern Alexander intercepts it, returns it to the 10, but regulation is over!

OT:

Tony Thomas intercepts Brady's first pass! We have to stop them now.

Joshua Lewis stuffs Sirmon on the first run.

We stop them. They have to attempt a 46 yard FG, but they make it

Game over. 38-35 Washington wins.

Injury Info:

Randy Collins partially tore a ligament in his ankle. He is doubtful for this week, but I'll sit him.

WR Lennox Franklin suffered a strained quad. He is doubtful and will be sat.

WR Dick Sayers is doubtful with his torn groin muscle.

C Eric Evans is probable with his broken ribs.

DE Terry Smith tore a tendon in his big toe! He is doubtful for this week.

CB Dwone Secules is suffering from a hyperextended elbow. He is questionable, but will probably start.

FS Jonathan Green is recovering well from his kidney injury. He is probable and I'll probably play him this upcoming week.

Polls:

We dropped to #11 with the loss. I'll post the full top 10 and other things tomorrow (or maybe late tonight.) Happy New Years everyone.

I had some struggles with USC on the road for those rain games up north. Probably just a fluke, but weird things seemed to happen to the SoCal boys in the bad weather. I was worried for you guys as soon as I saw the weather report.

I've noticed our worst games are in the rain. I don't think this version has weather affecting one team more than the other, but from my limited results, it wouldn't completely surprise me.

Polls:

1. Georgia 9-0 (The only defeated team finally takes first place with a 48-30 win over Florida)
2. LSU 9-1 (24-6 win over Miss State but drops from #1)
3. Minnesota 8-1 (29-13 win over Illinois)
4. Nebrasak 8-1 (30-24 win over Iowa State pushes them from 10th to 4th)
5. Wisconsin 7-1 (30-27 win over now #17 Purdue pushes them up 3 spots)
6. Penn State 7-2 (24-13 loss to #8 michigan drops them 3 places - but still 2 places above Michigan - probably due to very good SOS which is #7.)
7. Utah 8-0 (oops the other undefeated team gets overlooked y me and most polsters despite a 54-13 win over TCU. SOS is 96 which doesn't help.)
8. Michigan 7-2 (beat Penn State 24-13. Has 22nd SOS)
9. Texas 7-1 (24-3 win over Texas Tech. SOS is 91)
10. Florida State 7-1 (30-23 win over Maryland. SOS is 81.)

11 USC 7-2. SOS is 23rd.

Depth Chart Issues:

Randy sits due to his injury. Bennie will start with Walter ready to come in as needed.

WR Lennox Franklin has to sit with his injury. This elevates Jerry Jones to a starter's role and makes Cliff Bell our #3 guy.

Despite WR Dick Sayer's injury, I'm going to ask him to play sparingly as a #4 WR.

C Eric Evans will come back as the primary backup at center. Once, he is 100%, he'll take over the starter's role again.

I have to sit Terry Smith due to his injury, and this leaves untested freshman Sam Amundson as our starter today.

Despite, his injury, I'm starting Dwone Secules.

Jonathan isn't quite 100%, but he is starting today. Brian DeMulling will backup both safety spots helping out SS Carlton.

Also DeMulling will be the primary nickel back.

Preview:

We are 7-2 and #11 hosting 4-5 Oregon. Their offense is ranked 62nd in the nation and their defense is 83rd. We are 28th and 20th respectively. Their star player is Senior QB Stan Flores who is an average QB, but he makes plays. He has a 134.6 rating with 2202 yards 58.8% 14 TD's and 8 INT's. Hopefully, we can lower that today. Their best defensive player is senior DE Ron Allen who is a 6'8 282 pound beast. He has 2 sacks, but 12 hurries and can really put the pressure on a QB.

Gameplanning:

Our OC wisely recommends going with a balanced offense that slightly features the running game, since Randy is out. Also, I'm finally going to make a concerted effort to get our FB more carries.

Our DC wants to focus on stopping the pass, and recommends a lot of nickel back play this game. I agree that this smart as well.

We are 11 point favorites.

We have 92,000 fans and good weather today in So Cal.

We run the ball well for about 20 yards, but end up getting stopped short on 3rd and 4 and have to punt.

Bob Smith is running all over us on the first drive.. but, Jonathan Green tackles him hard on our 30, and it looks like Bob's day is done!

WE stuff them on the ensuing 3rd and 1 from our 21. They throw a bad pass on 4th and 1 and we get the ball back!

Bennie wildly overthrows a receiver on 3rd and 7 and we punt from our own 35.

We are much better able to contain their 2nd back, and we force a 3 and out.

Bennie underthrows the receiver on 2nd and 7. A coverage sack occurs on 3rd and 7 and we have to punt. Defenses are dominating this game early.

End of 1: 0-0 with Oregon driving deep into our territory.

We stop them short on 3rd and 2, from our 16. They go for it on 4th and have a penalty negate a TD. They go for the 42 yard FG, but we block it (Pat Davenport) We recover on the 36 yard line.

They stop us at midfield, as Bennie overthrow the receiver on 3rd and 7. We pin them inside the 1 with a great punt.

We force a 3 and out, but they get off an amazing 64 yard punt with no return.

Cliff Bell drops a 3rd down pass (3rd and 5) that would have given us a 1st. We go 3 and out.

Kevin Putnam with a sack on 1st down to put them in a long situation, but Flores connects with his receiver on 2nd and 15 for 20 yards!

We stil stop them just around the 50 and force a punt. They are moving the ball well, but both defenses are dominating when it counts.

Bennie finally completes a pass! On a 3rd and 4, he connected with Bell for 9 yards!

Bennie with 3 completions in a row, he is on fire!

I spoke too soon, he is sacked on 3rd and 1 for a loss of 1. Walter Liddiard is sacked on 4th and 2, and we give up the ball on their 42.

We stop them on 3rd and 4 and force them to go for it on 4th.. they connect for a 21 yard pass!

We hold them short on 3rd and 5. They attempt a 39 yard FG, which is short!!

We get the ball back with 20 seconds left in the half.

Halftime: 0-0 tie! Bennie's stats: 3 of 7 for 22 yards!

Kevin Putnam with a nasty roughing the passer, keeps their drive going when we had stopped them on 3rd and 5.

Joshua Lewis with a 10 yard sack 2 plays later to make it 3rd and 13! WE stop them and force a 48 yard FG. It's wide right!!

Bennie with an 18 yard pass to Kelley to start the drive.

The DE blocks his next pass and it's deflected to their OLB who intercepts it!

At least it was deep in their territory.

Brad Adams with a huge sack on 2nd and 7 to force 3rd and 19. Unfortunately, Stan hits his star receiver for a 77 yard TD pass! Stamper outran my defense. 7-0.

Bennie with a nice 37 yard pass to Jerry Jones to start this drive.

Bennie connects with Cliff Bell for 6 yards on a 3rd and 5 to keep the drive going.

They stop us on 3rd and 6 on the 33, and we end up connecting on a 51 yard FG. 7-3 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd.

LaVern Alexander intercepts the slant route on our 30!

Wes Nelson starts off the drive with an 18 yard run in which he hurdled 2 defenders.

End of 3: 7-3 lead for Oregon, but we are driving.

Bennie overthrows on 3rd and 8 from their 38. We attempt the 56 yard FG, but it is short.

We force a 3 and out. Our defense is playing very well for the most part today.

Bennie overthrows Dick Sayers on 3rd and 7 and we have to punt.

I think our defense is going to have to score, if we are going to win it..

We force a 3 and out.. come on special teams.

Wes Nelson fumbles it on their 40, and they recover. Great field position for them.

LaVern Alexander with a big tackle, and Cole with a good play force a 3 and out, but their solid punt pins us back inside our 3.

Bennie coonects with Cliff Bell for 16 on the first play.

Cliff Bell drops a 3rd and 2 pass. We punt it despite there only being 4 minutes left in the game.. Come on defense!

Jonathan Green with a big hit on their HB, but he holds onto it.

2nd down, Jonathan Green with another big smack on the HB, but again he holds onto it.

SH!% we give up a 3rd and 10 run for 10 yards.

One more first down will give them the game I think. On 3rd and 4, Courtney Carlton blows a tackle giving them a 10 yard pickup.

We give up another 1st. There are only 90 seconds left, and we are using timeouts now..

Sheesh, we give up 9 yard run on 3rd and 8. That is the ball game.

Game over. 7-3 win for Oregon

Pros: Our defense played well.

Cons: Our offense was terrible. The HB's couldn't get any good consistent yardage. Bennie had a bad start and had too many inaccurate passes.

Week 12 news:

SS Don Brookins and RB Ryan Donckers are both eligible to return from their academic suspensions.

WR Lamar Woods us suspended, but that isn't a big loss.

Injury Report:

QB Randy Collins is questionable with his injury. Do I risk it?

WR Lennox Franklin is questionable with his quad injury.

WR Dick Sayers is questionable with his groin injury

DE Terry Smith is questionable with his injury

CB Dwone Secules is questionable with his elbow injury.

C Eric Evans is 100%

FS Jonathan Green is 100%

Polls:

1. Georgia 9-0 (Bye)
2. LSU 9-1 (Bye)
3. Wisconsin 8-1 (27-17 win over now #8 Minnesota propels them up 2 places.)
4. Penn State 8-2 (38-7 win over Illinois propels them up 2 places.)
5. Florida State 8-1 (24-14 win over #20 Boston College moves them up 5 spots)
6. Utah 8-0 (Bye)
7. Texas 8-1 (44-20 win over Kansas)
8. Minnesota 8-2 (27-17 loss to Wisconsin drops them 5 places)
9. Fresno State 9-1 (22-17 win over Hawaii. SOS is 92nd which keeps them from being higher.)
10. Miami 8-2 (41-20 win over Wake Forest)

We drop to 16th.

Even worse, our 3 and 3 conference record virtually guarantees that we will not win the conference and go to a BCS bowl

Depth Chart Issues:

QB: Randy is hurt, but we must win this next game. I'm going to risk him starting.

WR: Lennox is in better shape then Dick. I'll put Lennox in as our #3 guy with Cliff Bell being the #4.

WR: Dick Sayers will be dropped to #5 and will only play in the event of emergency.

C: Eric Evans will take over the starting C role.

DE Terry Smith will come back from his injury

CB Dwone Secules will continue to start with his injury.

Depth Chart Issues (amendment)

Finally, and most importantly, SS Don Brookins will return to the starter's role.

Preview:

Today we host 5-4 Arizona State. They have the #10 offense and feature an explosive balanced offense. Junior HB Willie Perry is one of the toughest in the nation to stop. He has 1268 yards, 5.15 YPC, and 6 TD's this year. He is a great power back who can run anyone over.

The defense isn't as good, but is ranked 52nd. Their best player is Senior MLB Eric McGee. McGee has 88 tackles including 5 stuffs on the year and 6 sacks.
Our offense is ranked 35th while our defense is 23rd.

The commentators believe the key matchup is Arizona QB Rob Moss vs. our secondary. Moss has completed 65% of his passes for 2258 yards 22 TD's and 6 INT's this year. He also has run for 552 yards on 67 carries. Our pass defense is 25th in the nation.

Gameplanning:

I hate to do it, but our running backs have shown themselves inconsistent in maintaining a ground game. Therefore, we put the pressure on Randy and go with a pass first offense.

However, with Randy's injury, I'm going to have Bennie play some today as well.
Our DC is not sure how to stop their team, but wants to try a balanced approach.

We are 9 point favorites.

92,000 fans on a beautiful day in LA.

A personal foul against Arizona State gives us excellent field position to start the drive on our own 41.

Collins throws a good pass on 3rd and 5, but Lennox didn't get a foot in bounds. We try a fake punt on 4th down. Our punter passes, but Mike Maddox can't catch the high throw.

We force a 3 and out, as our defense comes up strong to start the game.

Randy connected on a 3rd and 10, but a holding call negated the first down. We are unable to convert the 3rd and 20.

Rob Moss puts together a good drive, but Brad Adams sacks him on 3rd and 4. They attempt a 42 yard FG which they make. 3-0 lead for ASU.

Randy is sacked on 3rd and 6 and we end up going 3 and out.

Dwone Secules intercepts it on our 30 to stop their drive.

Randy underthrows it on 3rd and 5 and we have to punt. Another 3 and out for us

End of 1: 3-0 lead for ASU, but they are driving deep into our turf.

Moss drives them downfield and ends with a 1 yard TD pass to his potential All-American WR Sam Armstead. 10-0 lead ASU.

Bennie comes in for a series, and throws a bullet on 3rd and 7, but Lennox Franklin can't hold onto it. We go 3 and out again.

We kick a terrible punt and give them the ball on our 35.

Brad Adams with a big sack to stop their latest drive on our 4. They connect on a 22 yard FG. 13-0, but this has the potential to get ugly fast. What is happening to my team the last few weeks?

Wes Nelson with a 10 yard run to get the drive started.

Bennie hits Wes on a screen pass for 18 yards.

We fake the punt on 4th and 4 on their 45, but the punter can't connect with Mike Maddox for the 1st.

We stop them just outside the 20, but they connect on a 37 yard FG. 16-0 with 1 minute left in the first half.

Halftime: 16-0 lead for ASU.

Randy's stats 4 of 11 for 25 yards.

Bennie is 1 of 4 for 18 yards.

LaVern Alexander stops the 3rd down option play to force a 3 and out.

Malcolm with a 24 yard run which he almost took all the way.

Jerry Jones with a 9 yard reverse on the next play.

Walter hits Lennox for a 10 yard completion the next play.

A Defensive holding call gets us another 10 yards.

Suddenly, we are inside the 10.

2 short runs. They stuff us on 3rd and 4 from the 9. We settle for a 25 yard FG. Not good. We need TD's now, not FG's. 16-3 all the same.

A good kickoff return starts them just outside of their own 40.

Don Brookins with a key 3rd down tackle to force them to punt.

Eric McGee sacks Randy and drives his shoulder into the ground. Randy is done for the day!

Walter connects on a 22 yard pass the next play.

Wes Nelson then rattles off 15 and 13 yard runs.

Bennie overthrows an open receiver on 2nd down, but connects on 3rd and 8 with a 10 yard pass.

Walter Liddiard with a 12 yard pass to drive us inside the 20.

We fail to convert on 3rd and 2 and settle for a 35 yard FG. 16-6 with 2 minutes left in the 3rd.

Rob Moss with a 20 yard keeper to start their drive.

LaVern Alexander stops a 3rd and 1 run on the 50, and they have to punt.

We get it on the 17 to start our drive.

4th quarter: 16-6 ASU leads.

Malcolm starts off with a 10 yard run.

Walter Liddiard connects with Lennox Franklin for 22 yards to convert a 3rd and 12. Walter's scrambling is really helping him get room.

Bennie connects with Jerry Jones for 35 yards 2 plays later.

Sheesh! A holding call negates a 17 yard TD pass from Bennie to Jerry Jones.

They stop us short on 3rd and 10. We connect on a 34 yard FG. 16-9 ASU with 11 minutes to go.

Good kickoff return starts them on their own 37.

We play the option well, and Brookins stops them to a minimal gain on 1st down. We stuff them on 2nd as well. They throw an incompletion on 3rd, but Brian DeMulling was hurt on the play and has to leave the game.

Bennie to Lennox for 17 yards to start the drive.

Pass interference gets us another 6.

Bennie to Malcom for 12!

2 more short passes get us another 1st inside the 20.

2 plays later Walter Liddiard connects for 15 yards on a TD with Kelley! 16-16 game with 7 minutes to go!

Rob Moss starts the drive with a 11 yard scramble.

Rob is unable to connect on 3rd and 11 as Dwone had good coverage on his intended receiver. We force a punt, but they get a great one off. We start on our 14 with 5 minutes to go.

Quick short passes are working great now. We drive 30 yards on 4 quick passes.

Wes Nelson with a 9 yard run on 2nd and 9 and a face mask.

Malcolm rushes the ball well for 5 yards. Wes with another 9 yard run to get us another 1st inside the 30.

Malcolm with a 3 yard run on 2nd and 10. Under 2 minutes left.

Bennie connect with Wes Nelson for 8 yards on the 3rd and 7!

Wes Nelson with a 7 yard run.

Wes with a 9 yard run. Why hasn't he been doing this all game.

Walter comes in on the goal line, scrambles, throws a pass to Chukky in the back of the endzone, and it is a TD!!!! 23-16 with under a minute left.

Marcus Thompson with a roughing the passer to get them to the 50 quickly.

Rob morris with a 13 yard scramble, but only 12 seconds left.

Pat Davenport tackles Robb for a 3 yard gain. That leaves them with 6 seconds left. Rob heaves the ball, but we bat it away!

Game over. 23-16 win!

Positives: Bennie and Walter combined actually had a nice passing day.

Cons: Did I hurt Randy even worse? I see the potential for this team to be great next year once the O-Line gels and our receivers mature - I hope I didn't mess Randy up.

Games: We have a bye this week.

Polls:

1. Georgia 10-0 (38-35 win over Kentucky)
2. LSU 9-2 (37-30 loss to #17 Auburn, but they stay at the same spot in the polls.)
3. Penn State 9-2 (33-16 win over #13 Minnesota)
4. Utah 9-0 (37-16 win over Colorado State)
5. Florida State 9-1 (38-31 win over Georgia Tech)
6. Texas 9-1 (24-15 win over Iowa State)
7. Miami 9-2 (55-0 crushing of #18 Clemson only moves them up 3 spaces)
8. Fresno State 9-1 (Bye)
9. Wisconsin (45-35 loss to Iowa drops them 6 spots)
10. Arizona 8-2 (27-16 win over #24 cal moves them up 5 spots)

Our win only moved us up one spot to #15.

Arizona is 6-1 in the Pac-10 and almost has the conference rapped up.

Our defense is #2 in scoring in the conference, but our offense is 8th in scoring.

Week 14:

Injury Report:

WR Lennox Franklin is probable as his Quad injury is mostly healed.

C Eric Evans suffered a severe hamstring injury in our last game, and is questionable.

DE Terry Smith is questionable with his injury

CB Dwone Secules is probable with his hyperextended elbow

FS Brian DeMulling hyperextended a finger, but is probable.

Randy Collins is 100%

WR Dick Sayers is 100%

FS Jonathan Green is 100%

Depth Chart Issues:

All of my starters return. This is UCLA. If you aren't out, you are playing.

However, I will leave Lennox Franklin as the #3 receiver due to his injury.

I'll also slide Eric Evans down to the backup center position with his injury.

Polls:

1 Georgia 10-0
2. LSU 9-2
3. Utah 10-0
4. Penn State 9-2
5. Florida State 9-1
6. Texas 9-1
7. Fresno State 10-1
8. Miami 9-2
9. Wisconsin 9-2
10. Arizona 8-2

We are in 14th place.

Preview:

We host UCLA today. They are 6-4 despite having a possible All-American WR in K. Coslet. He has over 1000 yards and 8 TD's on the year. They have been missing their top QB most of the year, but Y.A. Hall is back for this game. The Sophmore has over 900 yards passing, 58% completion with 7 TD's and 2 INT's.

J. Brown is a solid running back with over 700 yards and 7 TD's. Despite missing their QB, they are 45th in the nation in offense. Tehir defense is even better at 38th led by star Ralph Woodson who has 6 picks on the year and 20 PD's.

The commentators believe the big matchup will be our secondary which has helped us rank 12th against the pass vs Kalimba Coslet their WR.

Our Offense and Defense are both judged to have more talent and we are expected to win.

Gameplanning:

Our OC wants us to pass first to set up the run, and I agree.

Our DC wants us to use a lot of our zone blitz package which I agree with.

We are 8 point favorites at home. I think this win will be key to keeping fans on my side since we've lost 3 games already this year..

We have 92,000 fans here today. Another sell out.

Excellent weather for the kickoff.

Good kickoff prevents a return. I still remember how their kickoff returner gouged us last week.

DT Marcus Thompson with a 7 yard sack on the 1st play of the game! Excellent way to start.

We force a 3 and out as they aren't able to convert a 3rd and 17.

We start with the ball on our 31.

DT Dean Quayle sacks Randy on our first play.

On 3rd and 12, Randy tosses a perfect screen pass to Wes Nelson! He has blockers, and he goes 73 yards for a TD!!!!! 7-0.

We exchange a few short drives, but then they hit a 21 yard pas to Coslet to get inside our 40. However, we stop them the next 3 plays. They attempt a 55 yard FG which is wide right!

Randy with 2 quick passes for 21 and 15 yards. Then, he gets sacked for a loss of 9.

We are unable to pickup the resulting long 3rd down, but we do run it on 3rd to get back in FG range. 10-0 lead on the 47 yard FG.

We stop them just past midfield.

End of 1: 10-0 lead with the ball inside our own 5.

Randy picking apart their defense with sharp passes. This is the best he has ever looked. Making some excellent passes. Unfortunately, Billy Kelley runs the wrong route and we have to punt from midfield. We pin them inside their own 5.

We stop them at around midfield.

Jerry Jones drops a 2nd and 10, and we end up having to punt from around midfield as Randy overthrows the 3rd down play.

Randy is cooling off.

Good defense stops them short of midfield.

DE Todd Hunt sacks Randy on 3rd and 5 to hold us to a 3 and out.

We hold them to a 3 and out. We get the ball back with a minute left. We can't do anything with it and we punt.

Halftime: 10-0 lead for us.

Randy's halftime stats 6 of 11 for 151 yards 1 TD 0 INT.

First drive of the 2nd half, Randy makes a few good throws and Wes makes some nice runs to get us inside the 25, but we end up settling for a FG. 13-0. USC.

We stop them after 40 yards, but still outside our 40 and force a punt.

Randy is 4 of 4 on this drive including a 36 yard TD pass to Kelley! 21-0!

We stop them short of midfield.

Randy gets sacked on 3rd down, he is limping a bit, but he is going to shake it off.

End of 3: 21-0 Lead for USC.

We force a 3 and out on their next drive.

Randy with a short pass on the first play, then hits Lennox Franklin for 40 yards on the next play!

3 plays later Randy hits Jerry Jones on the fade route for a 12 yard TD!!!! 28-0!

They get a great kickoff return to start on our 42.

The QB ends the 42 yard drive with a 12 yard TD pass to Coslet. Coslet has 7 catches for 78 yards and a TD already, but at least we've contained the rest of the offense. 28-7.

They force a 3 and out and we have to punt with 5 minutes left in the game.

Their QB is moving the ball, but Joshua Lewis with a 10 yard sack forces a 3rd and 25. Terry Smith was hurt on the play for us. We stop them on 4th down and get the ball back.

2 plays later Wes Nelson is nailed and he fumbles the ball giving them GREAT Field position.

Rodrick Garcia with a sack to push them back on 1st and goal from the 6.

LaVern Alexander intercepts it in the endzone!!!!

Game over. 28-7 win over UCLA!!!

Pros: We beat our rivals. Randy had one of his best games from a yardage standpoint. The defense is really hitting its stride.

Cons: Too little too late. No BCS game for us.

Final Polls (Before the Bowl Games)

Week 18 Bowls (Just Pac-10 for these early weeks)

Washington State crushed San Diego State 26-9.

NC State crushed ASU 42-17.

Week 19:

Injuries: Everyone is 100% healthy for this bowl game!

Depth Chart Issues: Lennox Franklin resumes his starting FL role, with Julius becoming the #3 receiver again.

Eric Evans resumes the starting C role.

Preview:

Pitt is 7-4 and non ranked. Our offense averages 420 YPG, they average 415 YPG. Our defense surrendered 345 YPG. They gave up 304.5 YPG. Talent wise, we are favored slightly in both offense and defense.

They have a 1000 yard rusher in Dorsey McNair, but he only has 2 TD's. Their starting QB has thrown more picks than TD's. Their defense is led by MLB Paul Parker who has 74 tackles and 9 sacks.

Wes Nelson has over 1100 yards rushing on the year, and he has taken over the starter's role and will get a majority of the carries. Randy is looking good from his last game, and I expect a big day from him today.

Gameplanning:

Our OC wants to pass first, then run, I agree.

We are using the same defensive scheme that we used against UCLA so well last game.

We are 14 point favorites.

We get the opening kickoff.

Two quick runs, then Randy hits Billy Kelley on a streak with a great PA pass! 50 yard gain!

Randy was 3 of 3 for 70 yards on the drive. FB Chukky Odom had the 2 yard TD run to make it 7-0!

They put together a mehtodical 15 play 74 yard drive that consumes 6 minutes, but we stop them inside the 5 and they settle for a short FG. 7-3 USC.

Great kickoff return gives us the ball at midfield.

Randy scrambles, pump fakes, scrambles a bit more, hits the TE for 35 yards!

DE Glen Smith sacks Randy on the 1st play inside the 20.

2 plays later Randy hits Chukky Odom for a 11 yard TD pass! Randy is a perfect 6 of 6 so far for 117 yards and 1 TD. 14-3 USC.

Derrick Oliva hits his WR in stride on a playaction pass for an 84 yard TD! 14-10 in the blink of an eye.

End of 1: 14-10 USC, with us driving down the field.

We put together a 15 play 77 yard drive which ends with a 2 yard TD pass to Chukky Odom! 21-10. Randy is a perfect 10 of 10 for 157 yards with 2 TD's to this point! Wes is running it ok on the ground as well.

Good pass coverage on the 3rd and 4 forces a 3 and out. Jonathan Green with a great punt return to get us the ball on our own 45.

Randy hits Lennox Franklin in stride, but a big hit causes a fumble which Pitt recovers.

On 2nd and 10, RB Howie Sherk breaks off a 70 yard TD run! Worse, Jonathan Green was hurt on the play. 21-17 USC.

Randy with a 15 yard pass, then a 31 yard pass, then a 10 yard pass. He is playing great!

C Eric Evans hurts himself blocking and has to leave the game.

Randy with another 10 yard pass. He is a perfect 15 of 15! Granted, their corners aren't good, but Randy hasn't done this to bad pass defenses in the past.

We end the drive with a 4 yard TD pass to Wes Nelson. Randy is 16 of 16 for 244 yards and 3 TD's in the first half!!!! 28-17.

They slice and dice our defense and connect on a short TD pass to make it 28-24. They went 78 yards in just 5 plays.

Wes Nelson with a 23 yard run to start our drive.

Later in the drive, they sack Randy on 3rd and 5 and force a punt.

They start on their 20, but connect immediately on a 53 yard pass!

We stuff them inside the 10, and they settle for a short FG. 28-27 lead for us.

Kelley with a nice kickoff return, but not good enough as the half ends on the kickoff return.

Halftime: 28-27 lead for us. Randy's halftime stats: 17 of 17 for 249 yards, 3 TD's 0 INT's.

Oliva hits Rod Cleeland for another long pass of 49 yards to drive inside our 25.

We stop them on the next 3 plays, and force a 37 yard FG attempt which they make. 30-28 Pitt leads.

Randy underthrows it for his first incompletion. Next play, he connects on a 13 yard pass.

Paul Parker with a 1 yard sack on 1st and 10.

We get stopped 2 yards short on 3rd and 10, but we go for it. Randy with a play fake, and connects with Chukky for 10 yards!

Randy leads us on a 15 play 70 yard drive, but we are stopped short. We settle for a 32 yard FG. 31-30. That drive ate up over 5 1/2 minutes.

Dwone Secules with a defensive holding call keeps their drive alive after we stopped them on 3rd and 8.

We force a 4th and 3 which they fail to make! We get the ball back.

Chukky Odom hurts his ankle on the 2nd play and he will have to leave the game.

We come up a yard short on a 3rd and 10 from the 35. We attempt a FG which we miss, but they were offsides!!! We get the 1st.

They stop us 3 plays later, and we settle on a 37 yard FG, but a penalty negates that. We attempt a 47 yard FG which we also make. 34-30 lead as the 3rd quarter ends.

End of 3: 34-30 lead for USC.

We stop them short of the 50, and force a punt.

They force a 3 and out.

Randy has cooled down, but is still 25 of 32.

We force a 3 and out.

We exchange 3 and out's and get the ball back. Both defenses dominating now.

5 minutes left, can we run out the clock?

Wes Nelson with a 6 yard run, then a 9 yard run.

But, they stuff us on the next 3 runs, and we end up punting it from the 50. A terrible punt, and a good punt return gives them the ball on their own 45.

LaVern Alexander intercepts the slant, gets some blocking, returns it 55 yards for a TD!!!! 41-30!

We force a 4th and 10. With 2 minutes left, they go for it. We stop them, and get the ball back on their 31 with 100 seconds left.

We have 3 short runs, but miss the 47 yard FG and don't cover the spread.

They hit a 40 yard pass!

However with only 3 seconds left, they only get one more play..

Incomplete.

Game over. 41-30 win for us!

Pros: Randy had one of his best games. Two very good games could be a sign of things to come next year.

Cons: Our pass defense was lit up.

Scouting Report
Potential
Has the tools to eventually become one of the most accurate passers in America. With continued development, touch passing is a skill that could really set him apart. Has the athletic base needed to eventually develop a good scrambling game. With sufficient practice time, he could develop quarterback instincts second to none.

It's worth noting that Randy statistically took a step back in almost every category this year. His passing yardage was lower, his completion percentage was lower, and he was sacked more. However, last year, he had a great WR. This year, he had 3 potentially great but inexperienced receivers. If they develop quickly this offseason, and the offensive line develops like I expect them to do, I think Randy could set records next year.

Time to head into the offseason.

The board gave me A's across the board, and are apparently happy with the direction I'm taking the team despite our 10-3 record last year.

I got about a dozen job offers this year. The most interesting ones were Arizona and Oklahoma.

Our budget has gone up 60,000 dollars to 2.48 million this year!

We have 127,500/week for recruiting about the same as last year.

Malcolm Maston is my only Junior thinking about declaring early!

Pac-10 players considering leaving early:

WR Kalimba Coslet, UCLA (Good riddance.)
RB Will Douglas, Oregon
RB Don Foreman, Wash.
RB Russ Hall, Wash St (winning the Doak Walker makes this a likely bet.)
SS Joe Hicks, UCLA
RB Marcus Hicks, Arizona
CB Mark Mandley, Arizona
OG Jason Pathon, UCLA
RB Willie Perry, Arizona State
SS Izell Stemke, UCLA (decimate that defensive backfield)

I kind of want to replace my DC, but he had another very good year. We were 21st overall and 20th against the pass. Most importantly, we were 14th in points allowed. He gets one more year to prove to me we are heading in the right direction.

I'm thrilled with my OC and am happy enough with my ST coach.

I ended up keeping all 3 coordinators.

Now, let's look at that roster to see who I should target with my 17 open scholarships:

(This is all barring any of my guys transferring)

QB: Randy is likely going pro early. Walter and Jamie are both seniors. Obviously, we will recruit at least 1 QB.

HB: Wes is likely to go pro early. Malcolm might go this year. Ryan has grown as a player, but I wouldn't want him starting. I'll be recriting at least 1 HB.

FB: Louis is good, but he is the only FB on the roster. I'll recruit one FB.

WR: We have 3 great true Sophomores. Dick is an excellent #4. I might recruit one, but I'll probably upset him with lack of PT anyway.

TE: Eric is a good starter and Dashon is a good backup. I'm not going to recruit another TE this year.

OT: We have an abundance of talented tackles that if they develop should be starter quality. Not going to recruit this position this year.

OG: Only 4 guards. Only 2 that are starter quality. I'd like to add at least one, maybe two guards.

C: Only one C and he was injury prone. Need to add 2 C's this year.

DE: Terry has graduated, and I'm left with a group that is raw but possibly talented. Still, I'm going after at least one, maybe two.

DT: This group is loaded at the top 3 positions on the depth chart. I'll probably pass.

MLB: LaVern was great last year, but is gone now. I'm not sure if Jeremiah can take over the starter's role. I might recruit one MLB.

OLB: Trevor looks like a future pro, but I'm worried about the other guys. I'll definitely add one, maybe two.

CB: Dwone Secules and Wayne Cole have a chance to be shut down corners this upcoming year. Robert is an ok #3, but I'd like to add at least 1 young guy to the mix.

FS: Jonathan graduated. Brian DeMulling has grown and will probably start, but we need to add depth behind him. At least one will be recruited.

SS: Don is gone, and Courtney will probably take over, but a very talented freshman could steal the starting role. I'll certainly recruit at least one.

K: None needed.

P: I'll add one.

So, positions that I'll recruit (barring transfers)

1 QB, 1 HB, 1 FB, 2 OG's, 2 C's, 2 DE's, 1 MLB, 2 OLB's, 1 CB, 2 FS, 1 SS, and 1 P.

That will fill 17 slots.

Given the need for help now at OLB and SS, I might try to entice a transfer if any of them are good enough.

I attempt to entice Kevin Heard, OLB from Oklahoma to come to our program. He would start if he comes to play for us.

Kevin decided to go back to his homestate and play for Maryland. Oh well.

Darn it, OT Kris Shiner left USC. He is going to play for Navy!

OT Brad Howell left us and is going to Utah!

Suddenly, we need at least one OT. I'll probably use the extra slot to go after a WR after all.

Now, we have 19 open scholarships and it's time to start recruiting.

Is it just me, or is there too many transfers, or at least too many starting-type players of big programs?

My top players (that I'm offering scholarships to):

QB Sedrick Sanders - The only downside is that he is a JC QB. However, if Randy is hurt, his experience could be valuable. Had over 3800 yards passings with 31 TD's and 10 INT's last year. Rated the #23 player in the nation and the top QB. Has had a 3.8 GPA in JC. Arizona State and Georgia are going after him hard.

HB: Brian Fann - Another JC player. Rated #4 player in the country. Had 1553 yards rushing last year with 13 TD's. Utah and Arizona are recruiting him hard.

FB: Tony Seau - Plays for Manual Arts in CA. He is rated #128 in the country and is the #2 FB in the country. Is an excellent blocker. UCLA and Cal are our main competition.

WR: Michael Howard - #14 player in the nation. Has 4.32 speed with great agility. Good hands. Is small which is my main concern.

OT: Terry Harper - 6'8 281 pounds. Plays for San Ramon in CA. Is supposed to be a devastating blocker. UCLA and Oregon State are the top competition.

OG: The top Guards aren't interested in coming to USC. Scott Standlee is 16th in the nation at OG. He is 6'1 288 and he is moderately interested in us. I'm going to try to make him very interested.

OG: Dan Woods is moderately interested. He is the #11 OG in the nation. Expected to be an elite pass blocker. Michigan is our main competitor and he is from Michigan.

C: Ricky Dubuc is an elite C, ranked 74th in the nation. He is 6'1 278. Expected to be an excellent all around blocker. He is from Hawaii. VT and Florida are our main competition.

C: Paul Coleman is even better ranked. Plays HS in NC. Is not as high on us as Ricky is. VT, Penn State, and North Carolina are our main competition.

DE: Jim Stacy - 6'8 270 pounds. Ranked #119 in the nation. Plays in Colusa, CA. Runs a 4.73. Excellent power at the point of attack. UCLA and Wash State are the main competition.

DE: Willie Hart - 6'8 258 pounds. Ranked 104th in the nation. Not quite as excited about us. Is from Ohio and is being pursued by Ohio State. ND also a main competitor.

MLB: Jermaine Smith - 6'0 234 pounds. Ranked 78th in the nation. Has 4.75 speed, but excellent hitter for his size. Cal, Oregon State, Arizona, and Arizona State are all coming after him heavy.

OLB: Mike Driver - 6'0 215 pounds with 4.40 speed. #1 OLB in the nation. Tremendous blitzer, surprisingly good tackler for his size. Lives in SC and may want to go to Georgia, but I'm taking a shot at him.

OLB: Jimmy May - 6'1 214 pounds with 4.55 speed. Ranked 86th in the nation. Very aggressive hitter. Had over 120 tackles last year with 7 sacks. Also had 3 interceptions. LSU and Miami are our main competition. He plays for Champion Christian in Chico, CA.

CB: I know I only was going to recruit one, but two of the top 3 CB's in the nation seem very interested in us.

CB: Bob Knight - 6'0 191 pounds. #2 CB in the nation. 4.50 speed. Junior College player with great hitting ability for a corner. 72 tackles 4 INT's last year.

CB: Terry Betters - 5'11 190 pounds. #3 CB in the nation. 4.55 speed. Great coverage ability despite just average speed. Has 8 picks in HS last year. Plays in Fairbanks, Alaska. Utah and UCLA are our top competition.

Knight has the potential to move to FS if needed as he is very athletic. Therefore, I will only recruit one true FS.

FS: Nate Ferrario - 6'1 195 with 4.50 speed. #3 FS in the country. Plays for Redwood in Larkspur, CA. He loves to hit guys and is a powerful tackler. He's also expected to be a great ball hawk. UCLA and Cal are our main competition, but lots of teams want him.

SS: Steve Hotchkiss - Love his name, 6-2 189 pounds. Runs a 4.46. Plays for Calvery Chapel Christian in Las Vegas, NV. He loves to blitz and had 7 sacks last year. Our coaches think he has the potential to lead all safeties in picks one day. Tremendous coverage abilities. UCLA and Washington are our main competition.

P: Luke Sauerbrun - 5'8 168. #1 Punter in the nation. Averaged 43 Yards per punt last year. Cal and Arizona State are our main competition.

The Rest of our money goes to a variety of players.

I'm sort of on the fence about this. Both of those OT's were very highly regarded HS players who didn't get hardly any PT and were behind better players. It sort of made sense for them to go (but was still disappointing to me.)

Edit: Actually, they got no PT since they were redshirted. However, the point stands that they were both #3 and #4 on the depth chart with better also young players ahead of them. I guess they could have been a bit more patient, but it does make it more challenging as you can't stockpile talent at one position. I don't see this as a huge negative. Like I said, I'm on the fench if it is too much or not. I'm leaning towards it being ok.
