Madden 06 3AD: Act I - Diaspora

Raiders' Davis Flees Country, Dissolves Team

OAKLAND, CA (AP) - The man who has been the face of the Oakland Raiders since their AFL days has apparently decided to save his last selfish act on American soil for the Bay Area. With a bribery scandal in the air and stadium improvement talks continued to deteriorate with the Alameda County Stadium Commission, Al Davis yesterday announced live on KTVU-TV that effective immediately he was granted asylum in Portugal and that the Oakland Raiders are no more.

Calls to the NFL commissioner's office in New York City were unanswered as thousand of members of Raider Nation flooded the switchboards. ABC announcer and former Raider coach John Madden said, "Al does everything his own way, and frankly, I'm not a bit surprised by any of this."

With only two weeks until training camp begins, this puts both the city and the league in a terrible bind. If Davis does actually have the power to dissolve the franchise, the league will be forced to revise a schedule that already his tickets sold for Raider games across the country. The city, while taking a healthy chunk of revenue from the ten dates the Raiders use their coliseum, is in debt to the tune of $100 million and is borrowing against funds projected to come from Raider contests.

Moss Throws Down Gauntlet

ENGLEWOOD, CO (AP) - Prized off-season catch Randy Moss perhaps will never catch a ball in silver and black, now that he's signed a six year deal with the division rival Denver Broncos. Said Moss, "Why waste my time waiting for a check that's not coming? Al said I ain't got no contract. Pat Bowlen sure didn't waste no time giving me a new one here."

Black Hole member and attorney for the newly formed Save Raider Football Foundation Barry McPherson stated in a press release that he's filing a claim to franchise rights in Alameda County court today. "We'll all pitch in and get the team back on its feet. The Packers are publically owned in Green Bay and we can do the same here in Oakland."

The NFL commissioner's office in New York City had no comment.

Gallery, Porter Sign Elsewhere

BALTIMORE, MD (AP) - The loud exit Randy Moss made in Oakland looks like it won't be the last. WR Jerry Porter traded coastlines today in his four year "free-agent" deal with the Baltimore Ravens. When asked about the situation in Oakland, Porter said, "TO screwed these guys last year. Davis screwed me this year. I'm happy to be here in Baltimore and hope I can help deliver a championship. We're just helping each other out."

Porter wasn't the only Raider trying to find a new home, either. Tackle Robert Gallery signed a five year contract with the Houston Texans. His comments, while not as harsh as Moss or Porter's, rang true. "There's a huge mess over there and nobody but a few fans are trying to fix it. And that's sadder than a couple of players leaving town."

Save Raider Football Foundation attorney Barry McPherson has directed Raider fans to email to the commissioner's office. "They need to hear from all of us. Some fans have had season tickets for forty years, and the NFL doesn't care about what's going on? This is ridculous."

No End In Sight?
Five More Raiders Jump Ship

OAKLAND, CA (AP) - On the fourth day since Al Davis supposedly dissolved the Raiders, Charles Woodson, Danny Clark, Warren Sapp, Ted Washington, and Lamont Jordan all found employment with other franchises around the NFL. Sapp said, "This (expletive) is ridiculous. Someone needs to step up besides that lawyer dude. There's a lot of rich guys in the Bay area, guys with clout."

Sapp, while not the first Raider impact player to leave, still will make a huge difference on the defensive line for his new team in Cincinnati. His linemate Ted Washington fled to the Bengals' rival Cleveland Browns. Both signed three year contracts with undisclosed terms.

Perennial doormat Houston picked up its second player from Oakland with their reported signing of CB Charles Woodson. His five year deal equals the length of the Texans contract with Robert Gallery.

The New Orleans Saints announced that they have come to an agreement with RB Lamont Jordan. Like Randy Moss, Jordan was a prized free agent signing this offseason that will never take a snap in a Raiders uniform.

In Nashville, the Titans have signed linebacker Danny Clark to a contract with undisclosed terms.

Tagliabue: All Raiders Free to Sign Elsewhere

NEW YORK, NY (AP) - In a rather stunning announcement from the NFL offices yesterday, commissioner Paul Tagliabue declared that all Oakland players that haven't signed a contract with a new team may do so. It's widely suspected that Tagliabue wanted to void the deals made by various teams over the last week, but the NFLPA threatened legal action and several owners sided with the union.

The future of the Raiders franchise is uncertain. "We still have an agreement with the city of Oakland and a long standing relationship with the Alameda County Stadium Commission," Tagliabue said. "NFL ownership is one of the most exclusive clubs in the world. Someone out there will want to join."

Alvarez to Commish: Find Ownership, I'll run the Raiders

MADISON, WI (AP) - Retiring Wisconsin football coach Barry Alvarez has a surprising proposal for NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. He'll staff up and coach the dismembered Oakland Raiders, with less than a week before training camp, as long as the NFL will cover contract costs until a new owner is found. "They don't need me around here with Bret Bielema running things anyway," Alvarez said.

Alvarez, 58, was hired in 1990 to turn around a program that had only five winning seasons in the 27 years before he came on board. Three seasons later, Alvarez led the Badgers to their first Rose Bowl since 1963, one of three Rose Bowl titles in his tenure. Alvarez is the winningest coach in school history with a mark of 108-70-4 in 15 seasons. He is 7-3 in bowl games.

Former Raider head coach Norv Turner was unavailable for comment. Turner left for Wyoming the day after former owner Al Davis dissolved the team.

Alvarez Takes Over; NFL Holds Raiders' Purse Strings

NEW YORK, NY (AP) - Barry Alvarez was introduced as head coach and general manager of the newly reconstituted and league-owned Oakland Raiders franchise today at the NFL offices in New York. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said of Alvarez, "He's absolutely the right man for an endeavor of this magnitude. I expect to find a buyer soon for the team and look forward to the process."

Alvarez, who pubically offered to take charge of the floundering Raiders franchise after former owner Al Davis dissolved and gutted the team, is currently the only employee of the team with training camp opening up on Thursday, just four days from now. The NFL will staff the front office, but Alvarez will need to staff all field-related positions.

The NFL in conjunction with Alvarez and the Raiders announced an invitee tryout for all players and positions to take place at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, CA on Tuesday. Interested parties may email the team at [email protected].

Before Their Times? Raider Assistants Introduced

With a crucial one-day tryout upcoming, new Raider head coach Barry Alvarez needed some coaching help in a bad way. The two men that he has hired, though some folks might have heard of them, aren't exactly what was expected in Oakland.

After acknowledging the difficulty in hiring assistants on two days notice, Alvarez introduced Major Applewhite, the former Texas quarterback and Syracuse quarterback coach, as offensive coordinator. "Major might be a little green, but he's got a great football mind. We'll get good things from him," Alvarez said.

Applewhite, 27, was 22-8 as a starter at Texas, set school records for passing yards (8,353), TD passes (60), total offense (8,059), completions (611) and attempts (1,065) from 1998-2001. The Longhorns team captain in 2001 and 2001 Holiday Bowl Offensive MVP, Applewhite was the Big 12 co-Offensive Player of the Year in 1999 and earned league freshman of the year honors in 1998. He has worked with Syracuse head coach and former NFL coach Greg Robinson at both schools.

Trev Alberts, formerly of ESPN, the Indianapolis Colts, and the University of Nebraska, was hired as defensive coordinator. "Trev knows defense. I'm glad I could help him get out of the studio and onto the field where he can help pass on what he knows."

A former top ten pick in the NFL draft, Alberts, 35, was named a first-team All-American ,the Football News National Defensive Player of the Year, Big Eight Defensive Player of the Year and the Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. In Indianapolis, Alberts played for two seasons.

Roster Roulette

After scouring the free agent ranks today after their invitation only tryouts in Berkeley, Barry Alvarez and the Raiders now have the following players under contract and in route to training camp, which begins in two days.

GAME ONE

New England 45, Oakland 20

FOXBORO, MA (AP) - After the tumulteous offseason endured by the city of Oakland and its Raiders, the reward was a opening night game against the two time defending champion New England Patriots. Tom Brady threw for 416 yards and six touchdowns against the beleaguered Oakland secondary, two each to Deion Branch, David Givens, and Troy Brown. The Patriots rolled to a 45-20 victory, spoiling Barry Alvarez's NFL coaching debut.

Although the Raiders managed to keep it tight in the first half, with the score being 3-3 after one quarter and 17-10 at the break, the Patriots broke the game wide open with successful scoring drives on each of their first two possessions in the third quarter.

The Raiders (0-1) return to Oakland to face Kansas City this week.

This concludes Act One of this Madden Three-Act Dynasty. Can Reggie McNeal, Derek Hagin, and Leon Washington lead the Raiders back to dominance?

Stay tuned for Act Two - Prodigal Sons.

Please feel free to ask any questions regarding these Raiders, any former Raiders, or where members of the Class of 2006 are playing.

Off the top of my head, I know Matt Leinart (USC) is in Cleveland, Drew Olson (UCLA) is in Cincinnati, Jay Cutler (Vandy) is in Miami, and Gerald Riggs Jr. (Tennessee) is in Baltimore.
