5 minutes of extra time in the Suiss-Spain match. That's how you know its an english referee. I wonder if he thinks Man U is playing.

Go Swiss!
The possibility of Spain vs. Brazil in the Round of 16 would be quite a shock to the WC. |

Holy crap, according to the numbers, Spain just dominated Switzerland, but couldn't score and ended up losing.

SI should archive the stats from this game. Every time someone complains on the FM boards about "I dominated the game and never scored, my opponent NEVER had the ball and never shot and won, wtf!?!!?", they could post the link to this match. |

Well, I feel a little better now about drawing Switzerland in the blind pull betting pool I am in.

At least the Spanish don't have to wait for the Quarters to be disappointed.

The good news about this is that Spain will have to play a really open style for its next couple of games if it wants to move on

By my count there were 40 goals at this stage in 2006 compared to 25 this year. Whatever the cause this has been a historically poor start to a WC in terms of attacking football. I've also heard multiple complaints about the ball from outfield players, which is a first. You think not being able to make the ball spin as much doesn't affect the players more than the goalies? Have you seen a decent free kick yet in the entire tourney? edit to fix stupid iphone formatting Last edited by bhlloy : 06-16-2010 at 12:32 PM. |

Beautiful shot from just outside the box by Diego Forlan dips at the last second and goes in off the crossbar.

I've said i think South Africa likely blew it by not winning that first game... and it's looking to be the case now. I just think they failed to take advantage of the "opening game magic" and now are just going to be exposed as not good enough to get out of their pretty tough group.

That Swiss win really probably just sunk my wife's hopes of Chile passing to the next round. Even though it was a long shot at the start anyways, now it is much more so I imagine.

You don't think Chile has a chance of beating the Swiss? Great result today but not a very impressive team overall and Senderos could be out for a while.

Exactly. Chile's chance really come down to beating the Swiss. Do that, and Chile will advance (and Spain might be sweating, lol--sorry, Icy, I only laugh as a general fan of Cup "chaos").

I'm not a big soccer person so correct me if I'm wrong, but if Chile beats the Swiss (which prior to today's game was supposedly going to be difficult for them anyways), that still likely sets up a three way tie right? Who then decides who goes on? point differential or what?

Goal difference I believe, then goals scored, then head to head?
I wish the first 2 were the other way round, that might lead to more attacking play |

Seriously... take the goal, and keep yourself at 11 men to give yourself at least a shot of getting a goal back to lessen the goal differential.
3-0 Uruguay and SA looks in bad shape.

I'm not convinced that the Uruguayan #7 didn't touch the ball on the way through, which would have put Suarez offside... But no-one on the TV here seems to have noticed it.
Wouldn't have made any difference anyway - SA were poor

South Africa still has a longshot scenario, but they'll need a France-Mexico draw, to beat France and have Mexico not beat Uruguay. I really don't see them go through in any other scenario (as others will require them having a better goal difference than one of the three other teams.)
In the Swiss/Chile argument, why couldn't they both advance? If they draw in their next match (they play hth in their next match), they'll both need just a draw in the last match to advance. Another possible scenario is Chile beating Switzerland and Spain beating Chile, with all three beating Honduras. In that scenario, Spain will most likely have the goal differencial advantage and Chile likely needs to beat the Swiss by 2 goals to stand a chance to advance, or pray for a Switzerland-Honduras draw.

Both the Dutch and the Belgian (Flemish) coverage were all over that offsideness. Factor in the Gerrard goal and I think you guys are getting screwed with your tv coverage over there.

I think it'd be a pretty tough travel budget to have Uruguay and South Africa in the same division year after year SI

I actually think that does give the referee a choice. He has to determine that the player was "intentionally impeded." What happens if he is impeded but it wasn't intentional (the goalkeeper is making a play for the ball but gets there a little late)? There seems to be room for that under the rule. Or is that not a penalty at all, which may be another problem? It seems like, if my read of the rule is correct (admittedly in the abstract and without the context of the other rules), there should be room for a penalty, with a penalty kick, that doesn't result in a red card. I'm just trying to understand if I should hate the ref or the rule. Last edited by digamma : 06-16-2010 at 06:17 PM. |

I think you need to hate the rule. If the last man commits a foul on a clear goal scoring opportunity, the referee must send him off. If the Uruguay player had been running away from goal or had less control of the ball, the GK may have got away with a yellow card. |
