Ivey Top Hitter in CL in April

When Roy Ivey stepped up to the plate in April, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

The young Brooklyn center fielder posted a .424 batting average with 7 home runs, 28 RBIs and scored 16 runs. Ivey also worked pitchers for 5 walks to post a .473 on-base percentage.


Montreal's Davis Bags RL Batting Award

Jason Davis used that sweet swing with great success for Montreal last month, garnering him the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

The 26-year-old first baseman put up a .374 batting average and collected 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

April's #1 Hurler Announced: Zhong Wins Award

Wang Zhong has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in April and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Gothams bullpen ace collected 1 save and 25 strikeouts in 27.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .158 average and posting a 0.33 ERA and a 5-0 record.


Republic League Picks Best Starter in April

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Andrew James still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 28-year-old starter for Colorado was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 39 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.93 ERA in 42 innings of work.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Glenn Archer earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Brooklyn left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Archer hit .462 with 2 home runs, 9 RBIs and 14 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

António Bruno is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the Ann Arbor hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .333 average with 30 hits, 7 home runs and 16 RBIs.

CL's Top Hitter Selected

Pancho Gamboa of the Gothams hit .431 in May with 7 home runs, 29 RBIs and 16 runs scored to capture a majority of votes for the Continental League Batter of the Month trophy.

The 30-year-old is in the last year of his contract and will undoubtedly use these numbers to try and bring in a huge pay raise.

In this current campaign Gamboa is hitting at a .366 clip with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs.


RL Honors Ring, #1 Batter in May

Lewis Ring is in the final year of his contract with Toronto and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 23 games in May the 33-year-old first baseman ripped Republic League pitchers for a .321 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 7 home runs, 30 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

If Ring keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

In his stats this season, Ring has posted a batting average of .313 with 51 hits in 163 at-bats, 11 home runs and 49 RBIs. He has also scored 26 runs, walked 6 times and compiled a .343 OBP.

Garza Takes CL Top Starter Trophy

Veteran Roberto Garza put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Noblesville Millers, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Garza racked up a 5-0 record in 6 starts, posting a 1.60 ERA over 45 innings and striking out 20.

This season Garza has a 9-0 mark in 11 starts with a 1.40 ERA. He has given up 84 hits in 83.2 innings, struck out 44 and issued 15 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .268 batting average against him.


Richard Earns RL's Best Pitcher Honor

Jay Richard is at the zenith of his career and today he was selected as the Republic League Pitcher of the Month for May.

He made 12 relief appearances for Hammersmith last month, throwing 13 innings and collecting 9 saves, a 1-0 record, 15 strikeouts and a 0.69 ERA.

Up to this point in the season, Richard has put up these stats: 23 relief appearances, 14 saves, 25 IP, 29 strikeouts and 2.16 ERA. His won-lost record is 3-1 with the opposition is hitting .228 against him.

Great Month Gets CL Top Rookie Trophy

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Jorge Márquez just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 21-year-old right fielder for Noblesville hit .320 with 33 hits, 4 home runs and 9 runs batted in. He also logged 8 walks and compiled a .431 on-base percentage.

Márquez is batting .342 this season in 51 games with 5 home runs, 21 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He has 64 hits in 187 at-bats.


Shaffer Grades Out as May's Top Rookie

Youngster Dan Shaffer emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Omaha deserved the honor, batting .299 with no home runs and 6 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Shaffer enjoy the limelight.

This year Shaffer is hitting at a .277 pace with 1 home run and 16 RBIs. He has played in 51 games and scored 21 times.

Ramírez Brings Home CL Batter of Month Honor

Halifax right fielder Roberto Ramírez put the wraps on a fine June by capturing the Continental League Batter of the Month honors today.

He put up a .340 batting average and .444 on-base percentage last month while racking up 7 home runs, 21 RBIs, 24 runs scored and 20 walks.

So far this season Ramírez has put up a .329 batting average with 99 hits, 22 home runs and 61 RBIs.


Sánchez Takes Best Bat Award in June

Guillermo Sánchez battered Republic League pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old Sánchez told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 25 games, Sánchez hit .406 with 6 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 19 runs.

This year Sánchez is batting .348 with 13 home runs and 65 RBIs.

CL Pick for Top Pitcher in June is Rosales

Tony Rosales was the anchor in the Halifax bullpen last month and snatched up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors for June. The 32-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 26 innings over 11 relief appearances and collected a 5-0 record with 16 strikeouts and no saves while etching his 2.42 ERA.

For the season Rosales is 8-and-1 with no saves and a 3.32 ERA. He has given up 60 hits in 62.1 innings with 42 strikeouts.


June's Best Hurler in RL is Madrid

León Madrid's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in June, the 28-year-old Omaha hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 31 in 43.2 innings, logged an ERA of 1.65 and allowed opponents to hit .184 against him.

So far this season Madrid has a 11-2 record, 16 starts, 114.1 innings, 88 strikeouts and a 3.15 ERA.

Mullen Wins June's Rookie Award

Drew Mullen's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Brooklyn right fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In June he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .361 with 6 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run. Mullen also scored 14 times and drove in 5 runs.

This year Mullen is batting .340 with 80 hits, 1 home run, 22 RBIs, 22 walks, .405 OBP and has scored 40 runs.


Conner Named RL's Best Rookie

It was an exceptional month, especially for rookie Jonathan Conner. The center fielder for the Omaha Bees performed like a veteran and was named the best newcomer in the Republic League.

He captured the honor by hitting .337 in 25 games with 35 hits, no home runs and 9 RBIs.

This season Conner is batting .296 with no home runs. He has scored 46 runs and driven in 21.

Bradley Snags CL Batting Honor in July

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 31-year-old Mark Bradley put together a solid offensive month for Cleveland and was crowned July's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .402 with 14 home runs, 30 RBIs and 22 runs scored.



Thus far this season Bradley is hitting .326 with 34 home runs, 89 RBIs and 61 runs scored. He has 106 hits in 325 at-bats and has played in 93 games.


Hammersmith First Baseman RL's Best Batter in July

It was a successful month for Francisco Muñóz of Hammersmith. He won the Republic League Best Batter Trophy for July.

Muñóz batted .327 average, hit 7 home runs, drove in 20 runs, scored 22 times and compiled a .371 on-base percentage.

Batting .309 to date, Muñóz has 29 home runs and 83 RBIs.

Barrón Voted Best CL Pitcher in July

The Continental League Pitcher of the Month honor has been given to Jesús Barrón of Brooklyn for a superlative month.

"I actually never wanted to be a pitcher," Barrón told reporters when asked who he credits for his pitching ability. "I was an outfielder until high school and on the third day of tryouts my coach came up and said, 'Son you couldn't hit a lick even if we put it on a tee for ya.' Well, that ticked me off, so I decided if I couldn't hit I wanted to make sure no one else could either and so here I am."

It all turned out for the best as the Brooklyn starter notched a 4-0 record with a 2.76 ERA last month. He made 5 starts and struck out 33 in 32.2 innings.

Barrón has posted a 9-9 record for the year with a 4.35 ERA. Teams are hitting .266 against him and he has rung up 110 strikeouts in 130.1 innings.


Richard RL Winner, Top Hurler in July

He was the top pitcher in July, according to the voters. Jay Richard shellshocked enemy batters to win the Republic League Pitcher of the Month Award.

Hammersmith's star reliever held the opposition to a .200 average and put up 10 saves and 15 strikeouts in 13.2 innings, with a 3-0 mark and a 0.00 ERA.

This season Richard has notched 31 saves with 53 strikeouts and no walks in 51.2 innings while registering a 1.22 ERA and a 6-1 won-lost record.

CL Rookie Hittin' on All Cylinders in July

Noblesville's Jorge Márquez collected 33 hits to snare the Continental League Rookie of the Month for July.

He batted .333 with 2 home runs, 7 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

The 21-year-old is barely old enough to shave, but he could definitely contend for Rookie of the Year if he keeps up this pace.

This year Márquez has hit at a .297 clip with 114 hits, 7 home runs, 31 RBIs and 67 runs scored.


Rookie Third Baseman Honored by RL

José Villanueva sizzled last month as he put together a successful bid for the Republic League Rookie of the Month.

In July the Hartford Riverhawks third baseman banged out 37 hits and 3 home runs for a solid .389 average. He also scored 18 runs and drove in 14.

So far this season Villanueva is hitting .301 with 8 home runs, 43 RBIs and 52 runs scored. He has 113 hits in 375 at-bats and a .354 OBP.

Gómez Wins Best Bat Trophy in August

It was a good month for Noblesville Millers shortstop Fabián Gómez, August's Continental League Batter of the Month.

Gómez starred by hitting .427 with a .491 on-base percentage. He totaled 41 hits in 96 at-bats, 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 15 runs.

For the season Gómez is batting .344 with 163 hits and 25 home runs. He has scored 70 times and batted in 89.


Ann Arbor's Ine Snags August Batting Title

Shiro Ine was at the top of the hit parade in the Republic League throughout August. For the outstanding month, the talented Ann Arbor center fielder was chosen the Batter of the Month.

He compiled a .345 average with 39 hits, 8 home runs, 28 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

Ine is currently batting .315 with 25 home runs and 91 RBIs.

The best pitcher this past month in the Continental League was Jaime García of the Napa Valley Winemakers. He really razzle-dazzled league hitters, finishing August with a standout 5-1 record and 2.40 ERA.

The Winemakers hurler made 6 starts and surrendered 42 hits in 45 innings. He struck out 22 and walked 9.

This season García has gone 13-8 with an ERA of 4.19, posting 67 strikeouts in 144 innings.


Rodríguez Collects RL Pitching Award

August's #1 hurler was Tomás Rodríguez of Colorado. He gunned down Republic League hitters the whole month and claimed the Pitcher of the Month award. The Rancheros star piled up 4 wins and no losses to take the honor.

The 27-year-old Rodríguez added 31 strikeouts in 39.1 innings and 10 walks to his season record and compiled a 2.75 ERA. Other clubs hit .221 against him.

A rookie, Ramón Rivera is turning heads around the Republic League, especially since he just netted August's Rookie of the Month trophy.

This could be the first of many such awards if he continues this torrid hitting, but he's definitely put himself in a good position to claim the Benny Myers Rookie of the Year Award later this year.

Torrid September Gets Ramírez CL #1 Batter Trophy

Roberto Ramírez of the Halifax Winter Wolves swung a mean bat for the last 30 days and was acclaimed the Continental League Batter of the Month for September.

The 25-year-old right fielder slapped out a .352 batting average, 9 home runs, 26 RBIs, 23 runs scored and a .419 on-base percentage.

So far this season Ramírez is batting .311 with 38 home runs, 119 RBIs and 120 runs scored. He has 183 hits in 589 at-bats, 77 walks and a .393 OBP. Ramírez has played in 153 games.

The top hitter in the Republic League in September was Colorado center fielder Guillermo Sánchez.

He was selected the Batter of the Month after batting .368, hitting 7 home runs, scoring 20 runs and driving in 27.

For the season Sánchez is currently batting .334 with 27 home runs and 125 RBIs. In 153 games he has reached base at a .408 rate and scored 106 runs to date.

Assassins Hurler Named September's #1 Starter

September's standout hurler was Dan Robbins of Apex. He muzzled Continental League hitters and held them in check the entire month to capture the Pitcher of the Month award.

To win the honor Robbins compiled an impressive 5-0 mark and 1.53 ERA in 5 starts. The Assassins star hurler also rung up 24 strikeouts in 35.1 innings.

This season Robbins has registered 15 wins and 6 losses in 30 starts with a 2.97 ERA.


RL Announces September's Best Starter

It was a sensational September for Dave Robison as he mystified, mesmerized and terrorized opposing batters to capture the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

Robison locked down a 3-1 mark in 5 starts last month, striking out 27 while walking 11 in 38 innings and posting a 1.18 ERA.

For the season Robison has logged 15 wins and 7 losses and struck out 125 batters in 201.2 innings while compiling a 3.03 ERA.

September Sensation CL's Best Rookie

Jorge Márquez of the Noblesville Millers has been selected the top Rookie in the Continental League.

In September he had 32 hits, 5 home runs, 14 RBIs, and 22 runs scored. He hit .311 with a .403 OBP.

Posting a .290 batting average to date, Márquez has 15 home runs and 50 RBIs.

Dan Shaffer made a name for himself in the Republic League in September. The talented second baseman for Omaha compiled a .416 batting average and was the top votegetter for the Rookie of the Month trophy.

He won it by going 32-77 in 23 games with 1 home run, 12 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

This season Shaffer is swinging the bat at a .308 pace. He has hit 6 home runs and scored 75 times, while driving in 58. His on-base percentage is .369 and he has played in 152 games.

Well, I knew I had the talent to contend, but it was going to require some better pitching in my rotation and more of a steady performance from a less top-heavy lineup. I guess I got that, although when I suspect my team overplays its talent slightly, I am always concerned for a let down in the postseason.

Weird season for Toronto. I missed on 3-4 good quality free agents in an attempt to win this year. After you miss on guys like that, you don't expect a good season, so this was a pleasant surprise.

I knew I wouldn't be as good this year, but was hoping to contend a little more. Could only play with 20 this season due to salary cap issues, this was the bubble year I had to deal with some of the old AI signings plus my new guys I brought in. I have another year or two to deal with it, but think I can piece things back together to compete again next year hopefully.
