CL's Best Rookie Announced

Earl Martin, the rookie third baseman for the Baltimore Gothams, assured himself of a place in Continental League history with a solid performance in the 2184 season. He now has a place reserved for him in the league record book under "Rookie of the Year."

The 26-year-old Baltimore newcomer took the trophy by hitting .287 in 162 games this season and finished with 190 hits, 11 home runs, 64 RBIs and 92 runs scored.


Republic League Picks Premier Rookie

The regular season is now history and it's awards time in the Republic League. This year's winner of the Benny Myers Rookie of the Year Award is 21-year-old Lloyd Bell of the Colorado Rancheros.

The talented center fielder batted .328, played in 162 games and delivered 218 hits in 665 at-bats. His totals also included 15 home runs, 91 RBIs, 100 runs scored, 25 walks and a .369 OPB.

Gabriel Prado Award Presented by CL

The spotlight today is on John Bennett of the Cleveland Cyclones. He was named the top pitcher in the Continental League and will be honored with the 2184 Gabriel Prado Award.

Bennett compiled an impressive 19-7 won-lost mark to capture this year's honor. In 237 innings of work and 33 starts, the Cyclones star struck out 124, while giving up 198 hits and 46 walks. He limited opposing batters to a .227 average.

The Hartford Riverhawks have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making.
It's Ánibal Caro, this year's Republic League Gabriel Prado Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance.

Caro compiled a 22-4 record in 32 starts, tallied 183 strikeouts in 231.1 innings and recorded a 2.61 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .232 batting average against him.

CL's Premier Hitter, Gómez of Noblesville

Noblesville's Fabián Gómez put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 2184 Continental League Hideaki Tanaka Award.

The 29-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .350 average, picking up 232 hits, 41 doubles, 2 triples, 30 home runs and 114 RBIs, while scoring 96 runs.

I'm thrilled Edwards won it, of course, but this surprises me. You don't see a league MVP too often with a sub-.300 AVG, sub 40 HRs and sub 100 runs and RBIs. And it's not like Edwards is a defensive dynamo or a speed merchant either.
