CL Best Fielders for 2178 Selected
Wednesday, November 11th, 2178 Good glovemen take pride in their defensive skills. They know they make a difference in baseball. Even on days when they don't get a hit, they feel they can make a difference in the field -- and they do. The Continental League announced its Best Fielder Awards honorees for 2178. This year's recipients are: Pitcher: Otis Woods (Brooklyn Brownstones) Catcher: Andrew Davis (Noblesville Millers) First Baseman: Pedro Carasquillo (Apex Assassins) Second Baseman: Ryan Lau (Noblesville Millers) Third Baseman: Jorge Navarro (Halifax Winter Wolves) Shortstop: Francisco Montés (Brooklyn Brownstones) Left Fielder: Pierre Desmarais (Brooklyn Brownstones) Center Fielder: Juan Tirado (Baltimore Gothams) Right Fielder: Orlando Ramírez (Brooklyn Brownstones) Season's Best Fielders Selected by RL Wednesday, November 11th, 2178 What does it take to win a Best Fielder Awards? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the Republic League consists of: Pitcher: José Sánchez (Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines) Catcher: Sancho Colomo (Toronto Marlboros) First Baseman: Tomás Viera (Hartford Riverhawks) Second Baseman: Héctor Ramírez (Hartford Riverhawks) Third Baseman: Jesús Cruz (Hartford Riverhawks) Shortstop: Lorenzo Pérez (Hartford Riverhawks) Left Fielder: Derrek Byers (Hartford Riverhawks) Center Fielder: Jorge Bustamante (Hammersmith Hooligans) Right Fielder: Michael Easton Jr. (Montreal Royals)

Baltimore's McGuigan, Gabriel Prado Award Winner
Saturday, November 14th, 2178 The Baltimore Gothams have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Bill McGuigan, this year's Continental League Gabriel Prado Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. McGuigan compiled a 22-9 record in 40 starts, tallied 129 strikeouts in 262 innings and recorded a 3.81 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .274 batting average against him. Vachon of Hartford Named Best Pitcher Saturday, November 14th, 2178 He was the "go-to man" in the Hartford bullpen this year and he came through in a big way with 44 saves. That's why Raymond Vachon was awarded the 2178 Gabriel Prado Award as the top pitcher in the Republic League. Vachon made 73 relief appearances, logged 85.2 innings, struck out 75 and had a record of 6 wins and 3 losses to go with his 1.37 ERA.

2178 CL #1 Hitter is Apex's Carasquillo
Sunday, November 15th, 2178 It was a pay-raising season for Apex's third baseman. Regardless of where Pedro Carasquillo signs on next year, this 2178 Continental League Hideaki Tanaka Award will be considered a marquee pickup. He excelled with 195 hits, 46 doubles, 8 triples, 18 home runs and 71 RBIs while compiling a .327 batting average. Best Bat In RL Belongs To Rivera Sunday, November 15th, 2178 Mario Rivera has been around Front Office Offseason League enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 2178 season, he's taking home the Hideaki Tanaka Award in the Republic League. The Toronto first baseman put up a batting average of .359 with 24 doubles, no triples, 28 home runs and 78 RBIs.

Good to get David to help fill a void in the infield, now that I have let Peccia walk. David should be effective at least.
None of my other targets signed (with anyone), but I also knew I was under selling them a bit, so I am not too terribly surprised. Lot of ex-Hooligans that signed in this class. MR Creuzfeldt was a nice little pitcher for me last year, and he should be a good pickup for Teach in Napa. I would have kept him except I have a number of solid relievers in system already and ready to go. Tasan signed (I think resigned, actually) former longtime Hooligan CF Martin Martinez for another cheapie contract. Martinez was a nice little high Contact, good glove CF for me for several seasons (and came up through my system). And, what a shock, Alan splurged on CL Luis Villanueva, one of my favorite former Hooligan relievers. This is not a shock--Alan always loved him some good pen help. I no longer much believe in spending big money like that on relievers, but, hey, Alan's the champ, who the heck am I? Favorite minor league extension signee: 2B Mario Ybarra, with Teach. Why? Because I work with a woman named Maria Ybarra.

I had to think about that one for a little bit. Wasn't sure if I wanted to let him pitch out his final season here next year and walk to try to either re-sign him cheaper or get compensation for him or just keep him. I decided since last season I only had 5 pitchers worth anything at all, the rest were pretty much a step above mouth-breathers, that I really couldn't let it get any thinner. I don't really see this offseason improving my horrible bullpen any at all, so am going to stick to the hope of my starter making it deep enough in games to make it to the setup man and closer, and not rely on the bullpen much otherwise. We will see how that goes! I also historically have had about the worst luck of any manager in FOOL with draft picks. I just never have drafted well, never have done well with that part of the game. It is a big reason why I never have relied on the draft to build my team and why I have absolutely never gone into a rebuild mode ever with a team. So letting him go for compensation seemed pretty poor for me as an option too. |

That makes sense, Alan. And if I were to throw a bigger contract at a reliever, Vilanueva would be on the short list of relievers worthy to receive it. He did very well for me and was fairly consistently awesome.
It's funny you say that about the drafting, because I feel I am pretty good with that. Just setting a list of "my type" of players (like 20 or so) that excludes some that are bad fits for me helps extend how long I get such players over other random players the AI chooses. It allows me to often turn a draft with just one player with a realistic chance of reaching the bigs into 2, 3 or 4.

I am sure at some point I had some draft pick pan out well for me.. I just don't really remember many if any though. I do remember a number of players that I picked off as Free Agent discards or scraps that I plugged in and got surprising results out of though. I don't ignore the draft by any means (I put together I think 36 players on a list for tomorrow morning's draft if I recall correctly), I just don't seem to get much dividend from it ever.

So what did everyone thing of the top two pitchers? I was really torn on who to take. I went with the older guy with more pitches and better movement over the young guy with only 3 pitches and a much lower potential movement.

I don't remember which one is which by name, but going off your description, I am pretty sure I put the higher MVM potential guy at the top of my list. That stat is a big one for me when I rate prospects.

I would have definitely taken the guy you did, Tasan. That was the right pick.
At 17, too many things can go wrong - you at the very least have a SAFER pick.

I liked my draft in the 1st and supplemental rounds - maybe I should let the AI draft for me more often!

I ranked the players for the draft, but didn't really focus much at those top two pitchers, so don't recall them too much. My first pick was the 58th pick in the draft, so I only got one guy on my draft list anyways
I'm excited for this morning's season. I think last year was pretty lucky for me and as seen in spring training, I was last place.. I think my guys come back down to earth this season. I'm hoping to still try to compete to get into the post season though. |
