Chicago is looking to keep hold of playoff baseball this season. Anything less would be a big disappointment.

I may have made a poor decision with a guy in my starting rotation but hopefully the rest of the team picks up the slack. Almost went with a 4 man bit didn't feel strongly enough about the strength of my starters to go for it.

The best closer in the league, Ikeda, should be putting pen to paper on a 9 year deal.

CL's Top Hitter Selected

Mun-yeong Kim battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old Kim told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Kim hit .337 with 8 home runs, 25 RBIs and scored 23 runs.

Ortíz Takes Best Bat Award in April

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 28-year-old José Ortíz put together a solid offensive month for Ann Arbor and was crowned April's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .360 with 10 home runs, 26 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

Zavala Selected CL's Best Pitcher

António Zavala was the anchor in the Omaha bullpen last month and snatched up the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors for April. The 32-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 15.2 innings over 12 relief appearances and collected a 4-1 record with 18 strikeouts and 4 saves while etching his 1.72 ERA.

April's #1 Hurler Announced: Díaz

Germán Díaz's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-1 in April, the 29-year-old Spring hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 27 in 37.2 innings, logged an ERA of 1.91 and allowed opponents to hit .176 against him.

Rookie of the Month Winner Announced

Jorge Torres sure isn't playing like the rookie he is. The 26-year-old left fielder for Havana is rapping the ball like a seasoned veteran in the Continental League and today he took home the Rookie of the Month Award for his effort.

In April, Torres compiled a .411 batting average. He drove in 13 runs, hit 5 home runs and scored 13 times.

Hopkins Voted April's Top RL Rookie

The Republic League has made it official -- Dave Hopkins is the winner of the Rookie of the Month award.

During April the Portland catcher was outstanding with a .363 batting average, 6 home runs and 16 RBIs. Hopkins also had 8 walks and posted a .416 on-base percentage.

CL's Top Hitter Announced

The Continental League has selected its Hitter of the Month for May and the honor went to Gabriel López, Omaha's fine right fielder.

López was selected after batting .402, hitting 10 home runs, scoring 25 runs and driving in 31.

For the season, López is hitting at a .365 clip with 16 home runs, 54 RBIs and has scored 45 runs. He has 76 hits, 31 walks and a .449 on-base percentage.

RL's Best Batter Selected

For the month of May, Pedro Arteaga of the Maricopa Rattlers has really worn out the sweet spot on his bat. He has assaulted, used and abused Republic League pitchers to the tune of a .430 batting average and was honored as the hottest hitter of the month today.

Arteaga went 52 for 121 last month with 7 walks. The center fielder tallied 5 home runs, 19 RBIs, 25 runs scored and compiled a .461 on-base percentage.

Arteaga has a .369 average and a .406 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 86 hits, 11 home runs and driven in 38 runs.

CL's #1 Starter is Flores

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Alberto Flores still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 31-year-old starter for Havana was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 29 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 2.41 ERA in 41 innings of work.

On the year Flores has compiled a 8-1 mark with a 2.85 ERA.

Carmona Wins RL Top Pitcher Honors

May was a very good month for Gabriel Carmona of the Spring Lions. He held opposing hitters for a .271 average and took home the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Wallace Ivey earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish St Louis center fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Ivey hit .420 with 2 home runs, 7 RBIs and 11 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

So far this season Ivey is hitting .379 with 4 home runs.

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Alfredo Sánchez just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 23-year-old center fielder for Chicago hit .337 with 30 hits, 5 home runs and 21 runs batted in. He also logged 3 walks and compiled a .375 on-base percentage.

Thus far this season Sánchez has hit .298 with 9 home runs, 35 RBIs and scored 40 times.

Holland Wins CL Batter of the Month
Monday, July 1st, 2115
On the heels of a very productive June, Forrest Holland received Continental League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested right fielder hit .409 for the Manchester Terriers and racked up 11 home runs, 18 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

This season in 72 games, Holland has hit at a .316 clip with 77 hits, 16 home runs, 37 RBIs and 43 runs scored.

Ann Arbor's Bermúdez Top RL Batter in June

There's nothing like putting up good, solid numbers in the last year of your contract. Today Ramón Bermúdez helped his contract negotiations by nabbing June's Republic League Batter of the Month honors.

The Ann Arbor left fielder put together a .333 batting average with 10 home runs, 28 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Someone will surely be opening up the vault this offseason if Bermúdez continues at this brisk pace.

So far this season, Bermúdez has recorded a .264 batting average with 88 hits, 19 home runs, 55 RBIs, 54 runs scored and a .304 OBP.

June's Top Hurler is Oshima

Veteran Narihira Oshima put together quite a successful stretch in June for the St Louis Hops, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Oshima racked up a 5-0 record in 6 starts, posting a 2.48 ERA over 40 innings and striking out 31.

In season stats Oshima shows a 8-5 record in 17 games, 96 innings, 82 strikeouts and a 3.94 ERA.

Wolverines Hurler Named June's #1 Starter

In June, when the name of Rudy Farley appeared on the Ann Arbor lineup card it was a virtual lock on a victory. He started 6 times and chalked up 5 wins and no losses. With those stats it was a also a virtual lock that he would be named the Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

Farley shackled opposing batters on 32 base hits and a .183 batting average. He rang up 43 strikeouts in 48 innings of work, surrendered 8 walks and fashioned a sparkling 1.31 ERA.

In 17 starts this season Farley has registered a 10-5 record and a 3.29 ERA.

Rookie Rapper Reaps CL Honors

Jesús Yánez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Plantana hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .357 average with 35 hits, 1 home run and 12 RBIs.

This year Yánez is hitting .283 with 4 home runs and 31 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .366 clip and scored 41 runs.

RL Names Portland's Hopkins Top Rookie

Dave Hopkins put up some real solid numbers to sew up the Republic League Rookie of the Month honors this month.

In June he chalked up 32 hits, 1 home run and drove in 14 runs. The Portland catcher compiled a .340 average and a .357 OBP as he worked opposing pitchers for 3 walks.

Thus far this season in 77 games Hopkins is batting .352 with 11 home runs, 43 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He has 96 hits in 273 at-bats.

Harris Crowned Top CL Hitter in July

It's official. BNN writers have voted Billy Harris of the Omaha Bees the Continental League Batter of the Month award for July.

During the month he recorded a .347 average with 9 home runs, 25 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

So far this year, Harris is batting .329 with 23 home runs and 79 RBIs.

RL's Best Batter Picked

The Republic League has made it official -- Melvin McMonegal is the winner of the Batter of the Month trophy.

In July, the Waikiki left fielder starred with a .356 batting average, 6 home runs and 17 RBIs. McMonegal also had 10 walks, posted a .419 on-base percentage and scored 22 times.

This year McMonegal has 16 home runs and a .301 batting average.

Consiglio Gets CL #1 Pitcher Trophy
Thursday, August 1st, 2115
Gian Consiglio nailed down July's Continental League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Omaha to get a deal done before the 34-year-old becomes a free agent.

Consiglio seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 5-0 record, reeled off 17 strikeouts, worked 29 innings and held batters to a .262 average for the month as he posted a 1.24 ERA.

Up to now Consiglio has recorded a record of 14-5. In 22 starts he has fanned 89 batters in 139.1 innings with a 2.20 ERA.

Waikiki Starter Named RL's #1 Pitcher

Eliott Pomerleau of Waikiki had a tremendous July with a 4-1 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the Republic League.

Pomerleau restricted opposing hitters to 29 base hits and a .210 batting average. He rang up 30 strikeouts in 36 innings of work, surrendered 3 walks, and crafted a 1.50 ERA.

In 22 starts this season Pomerleau has fashioned a 10-6 record and a 3.59 ERA.

Yánez Picked CL's Premier Rookie
Thursday, August 1st, 2115
Youngster Jesús Yánez emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Plantana deserved the honor, batting .341 with 3 home runs and 9 runs batted in. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Yánez enjoy the limelight.

So far this season Yánez has 7 home runs and a .296 batting average.

Hopkins Gets July's Rookie Trophy

Dave Hopkins had a fine July against Republic League pitchers and was acclaimed the league's Rookie of the Month today.

The Portland catcher walloped the opposition with 26 hits, 1 home run, 12 RBIs and 11 runs scored. He compiled a .347 average and .405 on-base percentage.

This season Hopkins is batting .351 with 12 home runs. He has scored 53 runs and driven in 55.

Burry Wins Best Bat Award in August

Devin Burry of the Manchester Terriers stood out at the plate during August. The 26-year-old left fielder manhandled Continental League pitchers by batting .410 and was selected the Batter of the Month.

Burry collected 43 hits with 6 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 23 times.

For the season Burry is hitting .331, batted in 82 runs with 21 home runs and 97 runs scored.

Portland's García Bags RL Batting Award

Jaime García walked away with the Republic League Batter of the Month award for his solid work with the stick in August.

The Portland right fielder hit .423 with 13 home runs, 34 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Mendoza Is CL's Best Pitcher in August

Rubén Mendoza of the Oshawa Mullets was on top of his game the entire month of August, capping it off with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors.

He was outstanding in 6 starts with 4 wins and 2 losses, 36.2 IP, 26 strikeouts and a fine 2.45 ERA.

This season Mendoza has a 13-8 mark in 27 starts with a 3.04 ERA. He has given up 134 hits in 162.2 innings, struck out 120 and issued 73 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .226 batting average against him.

Juárez August's Best Hurler in RL

Pedro Juárez left little doubt in the minds of Republic League officials that he should be named August's Pitcher of the Month for his outstanding performance.

"I wasn't always confident at the start of a game," said Juárez. "Sometimes it's hard to get into the flow -- the calls aren't going your way or you're trying to spot your pitches too much. You just have to relax and use what you've been taught all your life -- get back to basics -- good mechanics, control, location, keep the ball down."

The 26-year-old tossed 40.1 innings of quality baseball -- going 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA and 25 strikeouts.

This year Juárez has compiled a 7-10 mark with a 3.85 ERA.

Norman King of the Omaha Bees has been chosen the top Rookie in the Continental League.

In August he racked up 30 hits, 5 home runs, 25 RBIs and 13 runs scored. He hit .309 with a .368 OBP.

This season King has hit at a .268 clip with 63 RBIs, 13 home runs and 46 runs scored.

Rivas Wins Rookie of the Month

Diego Rivas's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Ann Arbor left fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In August he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .326 with 11 doubles, 1 triple and no home runs. Rivas also scored 18 times and drove in 8 runs.

For the season Rivas is batting .260 with 107 hits and 2 home runs. He has scored 65 times and batted in 25.

Well, I certainly tried to back my way out of the playoffs there after topping the CL for four months. I am glad I still ended up in the money, as I really felt I had a team that could contend for the playoffs.

Your former farmhand, Rafael Lopez, doomed me. Not sure why I was intoxicated by his amazing stuff and 6 quality pitches, but I was. He pitched decent down the stretch but was horrendous for the most part. That's what I get for trusting a guy with 6 movement, 5 control, and only 4 stamina. He'll be in a bullpen role next year and perhaps selling used cars the year after that.

I may have made a poor decision with a guy in my starting rotation but hopefully the rest of the team picks up the slack. Almost went with a 4 man bit didn't feel strongly enough about the strength of my starters to go for it. The best closer in the league, Ikeda, should be putting pen to paper on a 9 year deal. __________________ Kevin

He has assaulted, used and abused Republic League pitchers to the tune of a .430 batting average and was honored as the hottest hitter of the month today. BNN writers have voted Billy Harris of the Omaha Bees the Continental League Batter of the Month award for July. During the month he recorded a .347 average with 9 home runs, 25 RBIs and 30 runs scored. So far this year, Harris is batting .329 with 23 home runs and 79 RBIs. RL's Best Batter Picked Thursday, August 1st, 2115 The Republic League has made it official -- Melvin McMonegal is the winner of the Batter of the Month trophy. In July, the Waikiki left fielder starred with a .356 batting average, 6 home runs and 17 RBIs. McMonegal also had 10 walks, posted a .419 on-base percentage and scored 22 times. Consiglio seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?" He fashioned a 5-0 record, reeled off 17 strikeouts, worked 29 innings and held batters to a .262 average for the month as he posted a 1.24 ERA. Up to now Consiglio has recorded a record of 14-5. In 22 starts he has fanned 89 batters in 139.1 innings with a 2.20 ERA. Waikiki Starter Named RL's #1 Pitcher Thursday, August 1st, 2115 Eliott Pomerleau of Waikiki had a tremendous July with a 4-1 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the Republic League. Pomerleau restricted opposing hitters to 29 base hits and a .210 batting average. He rang up 30 strikeouts in 36 innings of work, surrendered 3 walks, and crafted a 1.50 ERA. The 26-year-old left fielder manhandled Continental League pitchers by batting .410 and was selected the Batter of the Month. Burry collected 43 hits with 6 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 23 times. For the season Burry is hitting .331, batted in 82 runs with 21 home runs and 97 runs scored. Portland's García Bags RL Batting Award Sunday, September 1st, 2115 Jaime García walked away with the Republic League Batter of the Month award for his solid work with the stick in August. He was outstanding in 6 starts with 4 wins and 2 losses, 36.2 IP, 26 strikeouts and a fine 2.45 ERA. This season Mendoza has a 13-8 mark in 27 starts with a 3.04 ERA. He has given up 134 hits in 162.2 innings, struck out 120 and issued 73 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .226 batting average against him. Juárez August's Best Hurler in RL Sunday, September 1st, 2115 Pedro Juárez left little doubt in the minds of Republic League officials that he should be named August's Pitcher of the Month for his outstanding performance. "I wasn't always confident at the start of a game," said Juárez. "Sometimes it's hard to get into the flow -- the calls aren't going your way or you're trying to spot your pitches too much. You just have to relax and use what you've been taught all your life -- get back to basics -- good mechanics, control, location, keep the ball down."
