Hilton Named CL Batter of the Month

The vote is in and Billy Hilton, the 27-year-old left fielder for London, is the winner. Today he was honored with the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

In April, Hilton wowed voters with a .361 average while posting up 7 home runs, 26 RBIs, 17 runs scored and a .412 on-base percentage.


Torrid April Gets Fuentes RL #1 Batter Trophy

Alfredo Fuentes battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 30-year-old Fuentes told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Fuentes hit .352 with 9 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 15 runs.

López Picked as April's Pitcher of the Month

Fernando López hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning Continental League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice.

In April the Oshawa starter earned a 4-0 mark in 5 starts. He threw 31.1 innings, struck out 25 and compiled a solid 2.87 ERA.


RL's Top Starter is Escobedo

Luis Escobedo will be bringing April's Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy home to Las Vegas. He excelled all month long as he kept opposing hitters guessing, reaching and hoping.

Escobedo started 6 games, going 3-1 with 37 strikeouts in 39 innings as he compiled his 0.69 ERA.

Robinson Picked CL's Premier Rookie

Today Omaha's Jon Robinson was named the Continental League Rookie of the Month for April. He punished CL hurlers hard the entire month, collecting 28 hits in 94 at-bats.

He outdistanced his competition with a .298 batting average, no home runs, 7 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

A veritable toddler to the Republic League, León Ruíz just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for April.

Over the past month the 23-year-old center fielder for Portland hit .274 with 31 hits, 10 home runs and 17 runs batted in. He also logged 7 walks and compiled a .317 on-base percentage.

Kiyotaka Yamashita Winner in May

Manchester right fielder Kiyotaka Yamashita put the wraps on a fine May by capturing the Continental League Batter of the Month honors today.

He put up a .358 batting average and .452 on-base percentage last month while racking up 7 home runs, 22 RBIs, 24 runs scored and 16 walks.

So far this season Yamashita has put up a .367 batting average with 72 hits, 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.


RL Batter of the Month Honors to Suárez

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 34-year-old Bernardo Suárez put together a solid offensive month for Waikiki and was crowned May's top batter in the Republic League.

He batted .372 with 11 home runs, 22 RBIs and 29 runs scored.



This season Suárez has hit 14 home runs and posted a .299 batting average.

Sawyer Gets May's Top Pitcher Trophy

Bill Sawyer left little doubt in the minds of Continental League officials that he should be named May's Pitcher of the Month for his outstanding performance.

"I wasn't always confident at the start of a game," said Sawyer. "Sometimes it's hard to get into the flow -- the calls aren't going your way or you're trying to spot your pitches too much. You just have to relax and use what you've been taught all your life -- get back to basics -- good mechanics, control, location, keep the ball down."

The 22-year-old tossed 42 innings of quality baseball -- going 5-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 28 strikeouts.

In 11 starts this year Sawyer has crafted a 8-3 record and a 1.47 ERA.


Republic League Names #1 Pitcher in May

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Eliott Pomerleau still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 38-year-old starter for Waikiki was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and no losses with 32 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.04 ERA in 43.1 innings of work.

Up to now Pomerleau has compiled an ERA of 2.16 with a 8-1 mark over 12 starts. He has 72 strikeouts in 87.1 innings and has held opponents to a .230 batting average.

Tian-bai Chieu had a standout May and today received the Continental League Rookie of the Month trophy.

Last month the 26-year-old Washington center fielder played in 27 games and hit .316 with 7 doubles, 3 triples and 3 home runs. Chieu also scored 13 times and drove in 9 runs.

Chieu has collected 56 hits for the Freedom this year, 4 of them home runs. He has also netted 13 RBIs and scored 26 runs while batting .284.


RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Héctor García is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Las Vegas hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .330 average with 38 hits, 6 home runs and 19 RBIs.

So far this year García is batting .302 with 7 home runs.

López Wins CL Prize, Named Best Hitter in June

June was a very productive month for Juan López, and today the Manchester center fielder was rewarded with the Continental League Batter of the Month honors.

He clobbered enemy hurlers for a .414 average, 4 home runs, and 19 RBIs and scored 25 runs.

López is hitting .329 for the season with 5 home runs, 35 RBIs and 60 runs scored. He has 98 hits in 298 at-bats and played in 79 games.


Eichiro Horiuchi Named Best RL Batter in June

Eichiro Horiuchi, the Chicago Hitmen designated hitter, certainly made his name known to Republic League hurlers over the last month. He consistently introduced himself with hit after hit and came away with June's Republic League Batter of the Month award.

He slashed and bashed his way to a .368 batting average while tallying up 9 home runs, 28 RBIs and 20 runs scored. He also worked RL pitchers for 2 walks and a .385 on-base percentage.

Presently Horiuchi is batting .311 with 101 hits and 21 home runs. He has knocked in 65 runs and scored 47 times.

Vázquez Earns CL Top Pitcher Trophy

Oshawa Mullets starter José Vázquez has collected the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for a run of lights-out performances.

"This town really appreciates it when you're going well," said Vázquez. "They might boo you when you're getting knocked around, but they love you when you're mowin' them down."

In June the 26-year-old compiled a 4-1 record in 5 starts with a 1.27 ERA. He threw 35.1 innings, fanning 36 while walking 10.

Thus far this season, Vázquez has tossed 95.1 innings in 14 starts, fanned 102 batters, walked 28 and put up a 1.51 ERA with 9 wins and 2 losses.


Republic League Picks Best Starter in June

Veteran Vincent Young put together quite a successful stretch in June for the Waikiki Beach Boys, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Young racked up a 5-0 record in 6 starts, posting a 2.85 ERA over 41 innings and striking out 39.

His record for the year is 11-3 in 17 starts and Young has a 3.54 ERA.

In June Omaha left fielder Jon Robinson was named Rookie of the Month in the Continental League.

Last month Robinson posted a .372 average with 32 hits, 1 home run and 7 RBIs.

Robinson is currently batting .288 with 1 home run and 15 RBIs.


Ruíz Selected June's Top Newcomer

León Ruíz's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Portland center fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In June he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .357 with 12 doubles, 3 triples and 5 home runs. Ruíz also scored 22 times and drove in 21 runs.

Currently Ruíz has 18 home runs and a .304 batting average.

On the heels of a very productive July, Billy Harris received Continental League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested catcher hit .386 for the Alberta Renegades and racked up 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

This season in 105 games, Harris has hit at a .312 clip with 126 hits, 23 home runs, 75 RBIs and 68 runs scored.


RL's Top Hitter Announced

Francisco Ferreira battered Republic League pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old Ferreira told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 25 games, Ferreira hit .323 with 9 home runs, 19 RBIs and scored 22 runs.

This season Ferreira has hit at a .267 clip and produced 68 runs batted in, 21 home runs and 65 runs.

London's Nichol CL Top Pitcher

Whether Troy Nichol stays in London beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In July the 34-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

He put up some fancy numbers with a 4-1 record and and an ERA of 1.67. In 43 innings he struck out 34, surrendered 34 hits, 9 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 6 starts last month.

This year Nichol has recorded a 6-7 mark. In 22 starts he has fanned 115 batters in 131.1 innings with a 3.43 ERA.


July's Best Starter Named in RL

As Jimmy Dukes hoisted up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy for July, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Waikiki once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Dukes put pressure on the Beach Boys to keep him around by posting a 5-0 record and an ERA of 0.97 over 37 innings last month. He also rolled up 22 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Waikiki and to every other team in the league.

So far this season Dukes has a 13-3 record, 22 starts, 138.1 innings, 121 strikeouts and a 3.51 ERA.

Rookie Left Fielder Honored by CL

In the month of July Jon Robinson hit the ball hard, often and with authority and was honored as the Continental League Rookie of the Month.

He did it in standout fashion as the Omaha's left fielder hit .311 with no home runs and 4 RBIs while scoring 11 runs.

This year Robinson has collected a .293 batting average to date with 99 hits in 338 at-bats, 19 RBIs, 1 home run and scored 48 times. He has played in 94 games.

Youngster León Ruíz emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Portland deserved the honor, batting .343 with 4 home runs and 14 RBI. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Ruíz enjoy the limelight.

This season Ruíz is batting at a .313 clip with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs.

Chieu Takes Home CL Top Batter Award

Tian-bai Chieu of the Washington Freedom had a field day with Continental League pitchers last month and was crowned the Batter of the Month as a result.

During August he compiled a .284 batting average, drove in 23 runs and scored 22 times. He also managed to pick up 8 walks to post a .336 on-base percentage.

For the year Chieu has hit .254 with 15 home runs, 55 RBIs and scored 66 runs.

When guys like Spring's Sergio García win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive August, the longtime Republic League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 29 hits in 101 at-bats.

The veteran first baseman hit for a .287 batting average and collected 8 home runs, 28 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

This season García is batting .242 with 124 hits, 24 home runs, 87 RBIs, .329 OBP and has scored 70 runs.

Relief Star Wins CL Top Pitcher Honors

Bob Sharpe has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in August and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Terriers bullpen ace collected no saves and 29 strikeouts in 40.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .236 average and posting a 0.89 ERA and a 5-0 record.

To date this year Sharpe has saved 0 games while tossing 159 innings. He has a 3.28 ERA, fanned 111 batters and made no relief appearances.


García Earns RL's Best Pitcher Honor

He was the top pitcher in August, according to the voters. Juan García shellshocked enemy batters to win the Republic League Pitcher of the Month Award.

Portland's star reliever held the opposition to a .242 average and put up 11 saves and 17 strikeouts in 16.2 innings, with a 1-0 mark and a 1.62 ERA.

This year García has 30 saves with a 3-8 won-lost mark and 3.77 ERA.

August's choice for Continental League Rookie of the Month is Tian-bai Chieu of Washington.

The talented center fielder started 23 games, hit .284 with a .336 OBP. For the month, he totaled 29 hits, 9 home runs, 23 RBIs and 22 runs scored.
