The Tennessee Titans Road back to the Playoffs

The Tennessee Titans have not made it to the post season since 2008 and look to 54 year old Head Coach Mike Mularkey and Off Coord Jason Micheal to groom young rookie QB Marcus Mariota. Mariota was the 2nd overall pick of the Titans in the 2015 NFL Draft and will bring his big arm to the NFL and big stage. Last season, the Titans drafted LT Taylor Lewan 11th overall and the expectations are that he will provide provide protection and open some holes up for the running game.

Defensively the Titans have veterans LB Brian Orakpo and DE Jurrell Casey to hopefully solidify the Titans defense, but from all aspects and coming off a 2 win season the 2015 season is another rebuilding year.

To clean up the roster, the Titans have released CB B W Webb. The 25 year old Webb has not started in the NFL to this point in his career and was going to his 3rd team in 3 seasons so far in his career.

The Titans have signed QB Darren McCumber to a 1 year, $450000 deal. The 21 year old rookie QB went undrafted in the 2015 NFL draft. With only Mariota and 2nd year Zach Mettenberger signed at the QB position, the Titans needed to had a 3rd QB.

The Titans have signed LT Ernie Morrison to a 1 year, $450000 deal. The 22 year old rookie LT went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Titans have signed FB Drew Harden to a 1 year, $450000 deal. The 23 year old rookie FB went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Titans have signed LS Roy Chiodo to a 1 year, $450000 deal. The 23 year old rookie LS went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Exhibition Week 2, 2015

Atlanta Falcons 9 Tennessee Titans 3

All the points were via FGs including a 58 yarder from Falcons K Matt Bryant on the last play of the 2nd Q. Neither offense clicked as the Titans had only 8 1st downs in the game and the two teams mustered less then 400 total yards in total. The Titans offense was 0 for 14 on the 3rd down conversions and were on average 3rd and 11.1 in those 14 attempts. Rookie QB Marcus Moriata had his 1st taste of the NFL, but probably one he would rather forget as he went 3 for 10 for 17 yards. Zach Mettenberger was not much better as he was 9 for 24 for 76 yards, but 3 Interceptions.

The Titans did announce that LCB Cody Riggs will be out of the lineup for 4 weeks with a strained back. That was the only injury to report.

Exhibition Week 3

St Louis Rams 34 Tennessee Titans 10

The Titans fall to 0-2 in the Exhibition season with a blowout loss to the Rams. Offensively the Titans were better getting 15 1st downs in the game, 13 via the passing game. Despite again having a 11.5 yard average on 3rd down conversion attempts, the Titans were able to go 6 for 20 this time. QB Marcus Mariota was a little better in his 2nd game, he was 6 for 13 for 83 yards while Zach Mettenberger was 18 for 39 and 136 yards, but avoided the interceptions this time.

For the 2nd straight game, the Titans used a lot of rookies and will use a more experienced line up in the final 2 exhibition games for fine tuning.

The Titans announced the following injuries after the game.

KT Ernie Morrison pulled groin, Questionable.
TE Delanie Walker, Knee Tendinitis, Probable.
LG Joe Looney, Knee Bursitis, Probable.

Exhibition Week 4

Kansas City Chiefs 9 Tennessee Titans 3

The Titans offense was a little better this time out again, but could not extend drives because of turnovers, 3 interceptions and 2 fumbles. The Titans had 19 First Downs in the game, with a much more balanced attack. The Titans fumbled at the Chiefs 19 yard line in the 1st Q, had an interception at the Chiefs 8 on the very next drive, an interception at the Chiefs 18 yard line in the 2nd Q to stymie any points. RB David Cobb had 92 yards in 20 carries while QB Marcus Moriota was 8 for 14 for 59 yards and 1 interception. QB Zach Mettenberger was 9 for 20 and had 2 more picks giving him 5 in the 3 exhibition games. WR Dexter McCluster had 6 catches for 47 yards.

The Titans had a few more injuries to report.

RCB Jason McCourty is expected to be out for 4 weeks with a separated shoulder.
LB Zach Brown could miss 2 weeks with a sprained knee.
LT Levan Taylor is questionable with a viral infection.
RG Chance Warmack is probable with knee tendinitis.

Exhibition Week 5

Minnesota Vikings 34 Tennessee Titans 3

Not much good to report in this blowout game. 3 more interceptions by QB Zach Mettenberger. QB Marcus Moriota was 9 for 17 in his stint for 87 yards and 0 interceptions. It could have been worse though as the Titans recovered 2 of 3 of their own fumbles.

The Titans finish the exhibition season at 0-4, but the AFC South had 1 win by the Colts while the Texans and Jaguars also finished 0-4. The Titans finished with 19 points offensively for worst in the entire NFL. Only 5 teams were worse defensively with more the 86 points against.

The Titans had no new injuries to report.

1st Q

The Titans can not get the offense going, so far 1 first down while the Buccaneers have 8. Each team has had 2 possessions. Tampa Bay is running the ball (12 carries for 75 yards) and are 5 for 9 passing and 43 yards. The total offense favours the Buccaneers 118 to just 22. The score is only 3-0 Tampa Bay but the Bucs finished the 1st Q with a 4th and 3 on the Titans 3 yard line and are attempting a field goal.

2nd Q

The Buccaneers complete the FG try on the 1st play of the 2nd Q and now lead 6-0. After a Titan 1st down, Marcus Mariota throws his 1st interception and the Bucs Chris Conte returns it for a TD to make it 13-0 with 12:39 remaining in the half. Mariota looks the part of the rookie as on the next drive he goes 0 for 3 passing with 2 badly thrown balls. The Titans do get the ball back and continue to struggle with the run, 6 attempts so far for 0 yards. On 3rd and 10, Mariota hits Green-Beckham for a 39 yard pass and catch for his biggest play of the game so far. The Titans would have to settle for a 45 yard FG from Ryan Succop to make the score 13-3 for the Buccaneers with 7:45 left in the half. The Buccaneers then go the 73 yards and cap the drive with a Jamels Winston pass to Mike Evans for a 12 yard TD and extend the lead to 20-3 with 5:28 remaining in the half. Marcus Mariota does improve to 10 for 21 in passing with some completions in the following drive, but it stalls due to a holding penalty and the Titans get a 43 yard FG from Ryan Succop to make it 20-6 with 2:06 remaining in the half. The Titans do get a 3 and out by their defense, but are pinned at their own 1 yard line with just over a minute left. 2 running play and a 12 yard pass later allow the Titans to run out the 1st half. The Titans struggled to run the ball in the 1st half, gaining 22 yards on 11 carries, Mariota is 11 for 22 for 139 yards passing and the total offense is much closer now. 189 to 161 in favour of Tampa Bay.

3rd Q

On the 1st offensive play of the 2nd half, Jameis Winston goes 74 yards to Mike Evans for a TD, the Buccaneers now lead 27-6 just 50 seconds into the half. RB Bishop Sankey has back to back runs of 22 and 15 yards to move the Titans to the Tampa Bay 9 yard line. On 2nd and goal from the 7, Sankey punches it in for the Titans 1st TD of the season. The score is now 27-13 with 10:21 remaining in the 3rd Q. The Titans force another 3 and out and the offense gets them into the Red zone again. This time Mariota cannot cash in and Succop nails a 41 yard FG to make it 27-16 Tampa Bay with just over 3 minutes left in the Q. Suddenly the Titans running game is going and the Buccaneers running game has stalled. The 3rd Q ends with the Titans pinning the Buccaneers to the Tampa 3 yard line.

4th Q

The Buccaneers put a huge damper on the Titans momentum with a 7 minute drive from the shadow of their own goal posts and get a 41 yard FG to make it 30-16. The Titans do respond with a FG of their own with 5:05 left in the game. Succop hits a 37 yarder to make the score 30-19 Tampa. The Titans get another defensive stop and start a drive with under 3 minutes left in the game. The Titans cap the drive off with a 15 yard David Cobb TD run to make the score 30-25 but fail on the 2 point convert with 59 seconds left. Tampa Bay recovers the onside kick with 52 seconds left and run out the clock.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30 Tennessee Titans 25

The Titans did improve offensively as the game went on and ended up with 425 total yards compared to 348 for the Buccaneers. Tennessee ended up with 23 1st downs compared to 17 for Tampa Bay. RB Bishop Sankey had 17 carries for 75 yards rushing while Marcus Mariota was 26 for 45 for 310 yards in his 1st career NFL regular season game. WR Dorial Green-Beckham had 6 catches for 112 yards including a 39 yarder from Mariota. LB Wesley Woodyard had 8 tackles for the Titans while DE Ropati Pitoitua had the only Titan QB sack,

From the Trainers room, No new injuries to report and LB Zach Brown is cleared to play in Week 2.

Tennessee at Cleveland

1Q

Neither team did much early on in the game, it took the Browns over 10 minutes to get their 1st first down of the game with only 29 offensive yards to that point while the Titans were not much better with 3 first downs and 69 yards. With 1:35 left in the 1Q, Josh McCown hits Travis Benjamin with a 13 yard pass and the Browns get to the Titans 18 yard line. The Titans stop the Browns and force a 33 yard Travis Coons FG and a 3-0 Browns lead with 20 seconds left in the Q.

2Q

On the Titans 1st possession of the 2Q, RB Sankey breaks open up the middle for a 48 yard run to the Browns 31 yard line. On the very next play Mariota hits WR Dexter McCluster for a 30 pass and run giving the Titans 1st and goal at the 1. History is made as on the next play Mariota gets his 1st career TD pass to WR Kendall Wright with 12:38 remaining in the 1st half. After the extra point, the Titans lead 7-3. On the next possession, the Browns on 3rd and long hit WR Josh Gordon with a 53 yard pass to the Titans 13 yard line. On 3rd a goal, RB Glenn Winston plunges in from 6 yards out and the Browns get the lead back at 10:24 remaining. Browns 10 Titans 7. After each team had unsuccessful drives, the Browns pin the Titans to their own 8 yard line with 5:20 left in the half. After 1 first down, it appeared that Marcus Mariota had a first down before fumbling the ball and the Browns recovering at the Titans 35 with 2:33 left on the clock. 4 plays later, Josh McCown hits WR Josh Gordon from 1 yard and the TD. Browns now lead 17-7 with 1:51 left in the 2nd Q. The Titans do get to the Browns 40 yard line and K Ryan Succop hits a 57 yard FG with 17 seconds left to cut the Browns lead to 17-10. The Titans and Browns each had 9 first downs in the first half and identical offensive yardage at 184. Marcus Mariota was 9 for 17 for 122 yards in the 1st half.

3rd Q

The Browns open the 2nd half with a 4:12 second drive that results in a punt the has the Titans starting at their own 4 yard line. The Titans go 3 and out and P Brett Kern does not help matters with a 32 yard punt that the Browns return to the Titans 26 yard line. The Titans get a break as the Browns are called for roughing the kicker and the Titans regain possession at their own 24. The Titans take advantage of the break and march the ball to the Browns 28 where it is 1st and 10. On the next play, Mariota hits RB Bishop Sankey with a 24 yard pass to the Browns 4. Mariota then gets his 2nd career TD, a 3 yard strike to TE Craig Stevens. After the PAT, the score is now tied 17-17 with 5:13 remaining in the 3rd Q. The Browns take the next possession and move the ball to the Titans 19 yard line. The Titans hold the Browns to a 31 yard Coons FG and now trail the Browns 20-17 with 59 seconds remaining in the 3rd Q.

4th Q

The Titans do not move the ball with any success on their next possession but the Browns do when they get the ball back. Josh McCown connects with WR Andrew Hawkins for a 44 yard pass play to the Titans 2 with 10:13 remaining in the game. 2 plays later RB Isaiah Crowell scores on a 2 yard running play and the Browns now lead 27-17. A big Browns sack on Mariota forces a 4th down punt with 7:38 remaining in the game. The Titans get a big stop on the Browns, but a combination of a great punt and penalty put the Titans back to their own 8 with just over 5 minutes left. Mariota gets the Titans away from their own goal posts with a 38 yard pass to WR Justin Hunter, followed by 16 to WR Dorial Green-Beckham. After a Pass interference penalty QB Marcus Mariota was looking for Green-Beckham yet again but gets picked off by LB Karlos Dansby at the Browns 2 with 3:38 left. The Titans do get the ball back with 2:23 left at their own 40, but they turn the ball over on downs with 1:24 left in the game. The Browns run out the clock and the Titans fall to 0-2.

Indianapolis Colts (2-0) at Tennessee Titans (0-2)

1st Q

The Tennessee defense allowed a 1st down in each of the two first possessions by the Colts, but has limited the Colts to just 9 yards. Unfortunately the Titans offense has yet to get an first down and have been fortunate to recover two of their own fumbles including a drop by TE Craig Stevens at his own 15. To top it off, the Titans have 4 penalties for 25 yards in the first 7 minutes. The fumbles continue and again the Titans get lucky as they recover one on the punt at their own 28. The Titans finally get their 1st first down with 5:37 remaining in the 1st Q, they have a total of 12 yards in 13 offensive plays. Finally a big play for Tennessee as QB Marcus Mariota completes a screen pass to newly acquired FB Will Tukuafu for 33 yards and a 1st down at the Colts 19. 6 plays later, from the 1 the Titans have to settle for a 18 yard Succop FG and a 3-0 lead with 1:17 left.

2nd Q

Early in the 2nd Q, the Titans defense has been stifling holding the Colts to just 18 yards on 16 plays including on 2 on 3 rushing plays. Another big play for the Titans as Mariota teams up with WR Dexter McCluster for a 35 yard pass play to the Colts 29. Mariota is now 6 for 9 for 102 yards. With 9:47 remaining in the half, the Titans have to settle for another Succop FG, this time from 28 yards out and a 6-0 lead. The Colts finally break through the Titans defense with a 31 yard run by RB Ahmad Bradshaw to the Titans 30 with 7:20 left. Going into that play the total net offense was 160 to 37 in favor of the Titans. The Colts do what the Titans were unable to.... score a TD with a 13 yard run by Bradshaw. With the PAT, the Colts lead 7-6 with 4:44 remaining in the half. The Titans did get a few first downs but they were able to pin the Colts to their own 1 after a great punt at the 2 minute warning. On the very first play the Titans trap Bradshaw in the end zone for a safety and regain the lead 8-7. With 7 seconds left and the Titans looking to get into FG range, Marcus Mariota gets picked off at the Colts 48. After a 3rd Titan sack of QB Andrew Luck, the half ends. The Titans had 213 yards offense compared to 101 for the Colts. Mariota was 13 for 20 for 155 yards and held the edge in first downs 10 to 6. We have now played 10 quarters of football, and have yet to see the Titans force a opposition turnover..... just saying.

3rd Q

The first 12 minutes of the 3rd Q were basically punting practice. Both teams had 3 possessions that ended with punts. The Titans held the Colts to 18 yards and no first downs, while the Titan offense had 3 first downs and 55 yards. That changed when QB Marcus Mariota hooked up with WR Dexter McCluster for a 46 yard pass and catch to the Colts 22 with 2:59 remaining in the Q. The drive was stalled right there and Succop made it 11-7 with 1:57 remaining in the 3rd Q. The 3rd Q ended with another 3 and out for the Colts and their 4th punt of the Q.

4th Q

The Titans were not able to do much on their drive even though they got the benefit of a Roughing the Kicker penalty during a punt, but were able to pin the Colts to their own 6. The Colts offense finally get some momentum, 2 first downs to get away from their end zone then QB Andrew Luck hits WR Phillip Dorsett for a 40 yard pass play to the Titans 27 with 9:49 remaining in the game. 2 plays later, RB Ahmad Bradshaw rambles for a 22 yard TD run and the PAT makes the score 14-11 in favor of the Colts with 9:08 remaining. The Titans offense cannot get anything going and are forced to punt with 6:22 left in the game. The Titans defense really need to create their 1st turnover of the season. They don't, but they do get a stop and after the touchback, they have the ball at their own 20 and 3:55 remaining in the game. 7 plays later, the Titans are faced with a 4th and 2 from their own 40, 1:56 remaining on the clock. Mariota takes it himself for a 5 yard gain and the Titans still have a chance. Mariota then hits WR Justin Hunter for 19 yards to the Colts 36. Getting close to FG range. Another big play for the Mariota, 29 yards to Hunter this time to the Colts 7 with 1:02 left in the game. Bishop Sankey punches it in from 7 yards out and the Titans lead now 18-14 with 55 seconds left. Succop kicks one through the end zone for a touchback. On the 1st play from scrimmage, DE Karl Klug and DT Sammie Lee Hill combine for a sack, force a fumble and the Titans recover on the Colts 16. Ryan Succop hits a 43 yard FG after 2 penalties backed up the Titans on the final play of the game. The Titans win for the 1st time this season.

Tennessee Titans 21 Indianapolis Colts 14.

Game Summary.JPG

The Titans had 21 first downs compared to the Colts 11 and Total Nets Yards favored the Titans 414 to 234. The Titans sacked Colts QB Andrew Luck 6 times for 34 yards and did not give up a sack. The game MVP was Titans DE Ropati Pitoitua, he recovered 2 fumbles, had 4 tackles and 3 sacks. He was also credited with 2 Hurry's and 1 Knockdown.

Titans QB Marcus Mariota was 24 for 44 for 278 yards passing. He had 1 Interception. RB Bishop Sankey had 25 carries for 104 yards rushing. WR Dexter McCluster had 4 catches for 96 yards including a 46 yarder. The Titans filled 64700 of their available 69100 seats today.

The Titans have 1 new injury to report. CB Coty Sensabaugh will miss about 8 weeks with a stress fracture in his leg.
