Mike Anderson Selected April's Best Batter
Monday, May 1st, 2169: Today Mike Anderson was voted Continental League Batter of the Month for May. During the month the 27-year-old Halifax left fielder compiled a .389 batting average.

Most importantly for the Winter Wolves though, he also posted 9 home runs, 23 RBIs and 19 runs scored.


Moreno Snags RL Batting Honor in April
Monday, May 1st, 2169: Víctor Moreno received the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month.

"He might be getting older," Hartford's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Víctor's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field."

To win the honor Moreno put up a .367 batting average, 16 home runs, 33 RBIs and scored 28 times in April.

CL's Best Starter is Pérez
Monday, May 1st, 2169: Javier Pérez's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in April, the 29-year-old Baltimore hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 20 in 34.1 innings, logged an ERA of 1.57 and allowed opponents to hit .220 against him.


RL Selects Stevens April's Best Starter
Monday, May 1st, 2169: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Walt Stevens still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 32-year-old starter for Toronto was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 3 wins and no losses with 18 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 1.64 ERA in 38.1 innings of work.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Monday, May 1st, 2169: Graham Windus was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 22-year-old right fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 27 games Windus batted .365 for Noblesville, slapping 31 hits in 85 at-bats with 1 home run, drove in 15 runs and scored 9 times.


González Grades Out as April's Top Rookie
Monday, May 1st, 2169: Francisco González put up some real solid numbers to sew up the Republic League Rookie of the Month honors this month.

In April he chalked up 19 hits, 4 home runs and drove in 14 runs. The Omaha first baseman compiled a .224 average and a .272 OBP as he worked opposing pitchers for 4 walks.

Noonan Brings Home CL Batter of Month Honor
Thursday, June 1st, 2169: When guys like Cleveland's Les Noonan win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive May, the longtime Continental League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 38 hits in 97 at-bats.

The veteran second baseman hit for a .392 batting average and collected 9 home runs, 21 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

Noonan is currently batting .351 with 15 home runs and 33 RBIs.


Marín Wins Best Bat Award in May
Thursday, June 1st, 2169: It's official. BNN writers have voted Ramón Marín of the Hartford Riverhawks the Republic League Batter of the Month award for May.

During the month he recorded a .344 average with 6 home runs, 25 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

For the year Marín has hit at a .314 clip with 42 RBIs, 7 home runs and 30 runs scored.

Torres Is CL's Best Pitcher in May
Thursday, June 1st, 2169: A relief ace was chosen the best pitcher in the Continental League in the month of May.

The top votegetter was Carlos Torres of the Brooklyn Brownstones, who finished the month with 6 saves in 10 save opportunities.

He had 2 wins and 1 loss with a 2.45 ERA. Torres hurled 22 innings and totaled 19 strikeouts.

Torres has earned 9 saves and a 2-3 mark this season with a 3.47 earned run average in 29 relief appearances. He has worked 36.1 innings, yielded 31 hits, struck out 32 batters and walked 9.


Torres RL Winner, Top Hurler in May
Thursday, June 1st, 2169: Andrés Torres took home the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors in May. After all these years playing ball, the 35-year-old veteran still enjoys the game as though he'd just broken camp for the first time a month ago. He's a bit older now with a few more aches and pains, but the old man has reason to celebrate, having gone 4-0 for Hammersmith last month and claiming the Pitcher of the Month award.

He tacked up a 1.96 ERA in his 5 starts, tossing 36.2 innings and striking out 8.

This year Torres has registered 6 wins and 1 loss in 10 starts with a 2.22 ERA while registering 26 strikeouts and 18 walks in 69 innings.

Cleveland Rookie Reels in Reward in May
Thursday, June 1st, 2169: First-year man Goldofrede Alderete really swung a mean bat for the last thirty days in the Continental League and has been picked as the Rookie of the Month.

During the month he hit .370 with 11 doubles, 2 triples and 5 home runs. Alderete also scored 14 times and drove in 22 runs.

Posting a .320 batting average to date, Alderete has 8 home runs and 31 RBIs.


RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Thursday, June 1st, 2169: Bernard Hetherington earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Hammersmith shortstop might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Hetherington hit .364 with 1 home run, 24 RBIs and 18 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

So far this year Hetherington has hit .321 with 1 home run, 30 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

Rodríguez Takes Best Bat Award in June
Saturday, July 1st, 2169: Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 30-year-old Ernesto Rodríguez put together a solid offensive month for Napa Valley and was crowned June's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .340 with 8 home runs, 21 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Morín Crowned Top RL Hitter in June
Saturday, July 1st, 2169: On the heels of a very productive June, Ramón Morín received Republic League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested right fielder hit .326 for the Toronto Marlboros and racked up 7 home runs, 21 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

For the season Morín has produced 96 hits in 286 at-bats for a .336 average with 10 home runs and gotten on base at a .407 clip.

Saturday, July 1st, 2169: Veteran Ramón Gonzáles put together quite a successful stretch in June for the Apex Assassins, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Gonzáles racked up a 5-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 2.73 ERA over 29.2 innings and striking out 26.

This year Gonzáles has compiled a 10-3 record with a 2.92 ERA.


RL's Top Pitcher in June Is Hernández
Saturday, July 1st, 2169: As Xavier Hernández hoisted up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy for June, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Omaha once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Hernández put pressure on the Bees to keep him around by posting a 4-1 record and an ERA of 0.94 over 38.1 innings last month. He also rolled up 15 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Omaha and to every other team in the league.

In 15 starts this season Hernández has recorded a 7-7 record and a 3.20 ERA.

Gates Selected CL's #1 Newcomer
Saturday, July 1st, 2169: Youngster Dan Gates emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Halifax deserved the honor, batting .342 with 3 home runs and 15 RBI. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Gates enjoy the limelight.

This year Gates has 4 home runs and a .263 batting average.


González Top of His Class in June
Saturday, July 1st, 2169: June was a very productive month for Francisco González. The first baseman for the Omaha Bees was named the best newcomer in the Republic League.

He captured the honor by hitting .248 in 26 games with 26 hits, 7 home runs and 17 RBIs.

This season González is batting .253 with 74 hits, 16 home runs, 48 RBIs, 12 walks, .289 OBP and has scored 29 runs. He has played in 76 games.

It's a baseball spectacle for the fans and the players alike. It's the 2169 Front Office Offseason League All-Star Game. Héctor Torres Named Best CL Batter in July
Tuesday, August 1st, 2169: The Continental League Batter of the Month has been chosen for July and the trophy was presented to Héctor Torres of the Noblesville Millers.

He stood out this month with a .392 batting average, 40 hits and 4 home runs, along with 16 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Posting a .348 batting average to date, Torres has 22 home runs and 64 RBIs.


Hartford's Moreno RL #1 Batter in July
Tuesday, August 1st, 2169: Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Víctor Moreno can still get it done in Front Office Offseason League. In fact, the 33-year-old left fielder for Hartford was named the Republic League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In July he batted .365 with 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

So far this year Moreno has hit .329 with 34 home runs, 89 RBIs and 86 runs scored.

Brownstones Torres Wins CL Best Hurler Honor
Tuesday, August 1st, 2169: The Continental League announced the winner of the Pitcher of the Month Award. It went to bullpen specialist Carlos Torres of Brooklyn for his outstanding work on the mound.

He chalked up a 4-2 record, 13 relief appearances and 3 saves with a 1.47 ERA. Torres pitched 18.1 innings and rang up 21 strikeouts.

To date this year, he has registered 13 saves, 6 wins and 6 losses with a 2.74 ERA. Torres has made 56 relief appearances, worked a total of 72.1 innings and surrendered 59 hits. He has fanned 74, issued 21 free passes and held opposing clubs to a .223 batting average.


Riverhawks Puddifoot July's Top Hurler
Tuesday, August 1st, 2169: Capping off a whirlwind month in which he went 4-0 with a 1.32 ERA, Al Puddifoot was selected as July's Republic League Pitcher of the Month today. Reporters caught up with the elated Hartford starter as he left the clubhouse.

"I know it's difficult for pitchers -- when you have a bad start or two, people start wondering if you've lost it. Then you ride stretches like this one for all you can. You find it easier to come to the park every day because know you're contributing to the club, not just waiting for your turn in the rotation to make up for your last start."

Al Puddifoot definitely contributed to the club. He had 5 starts, throwing 34 innings, striking out 19, and holding the opposition to a .228 average.

This season Puddifoot has a 12-5 record with a 2.85 ERA in 20 starts.

Tuesday, August 1st, 2169: Dan Gates is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In July the Halifax hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .344 average with 31 hits, 2 home runs and 10 RBIs.

Tuesday, August 1st, 2169: In July, Francisco González had an exceptional month at the plate and hit his way to the Republic League Rookie of the Month award.

Mike Anderson Winner in August
Friday, September 1st, 2169: Mike Anderson hit the baseball with consistency all month long and was voted the Continental League's Batter of the Month for August.

The Halifax left fielder batted .330 and posted 8 home runs, 30 RBIs and 18 runs scored. He also drew 12 walks for a .411 OBP.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 26-year-old Turner told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 24 games, Turner hit .404 with 3 home runs, 12 RBIs and scored 16 runs.

This season in 126 games Turner is batting .278 with 13 home runs, 52 RBIs and has scored 62 times.

August's Premier Pitcher Announced By CL
Friday, September 1st, 2169: The Brooklyn Brownstones owe Jaime Meléndez a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in August, Meléndez tore up the opposition with a fine 5-0 mark on his way to the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Meléndez, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."

It was Meléndez who did the banging in August as he tossed up 28 strikeouts in 37.1 innings, holding opponents to a .229 average and posting a 2.65 ERA.

So far this season, Meléndez has logged a 14-3 record with a 2.69 ERA. He has started 24 games, hurled 167 innings and registered 160 strikeouts and 40 walks.


RL's #1 Starter is Trejo
Friday, September 1st, 2169: Arturo Trejo nailed down August's Republic League Pitcher of the Month award today, adding pressure on Hammersmith to get a deal done before the 30-year-old becomes a free agent.

Trejo seems unfazed by the talk. "We get a deal done or we don't," he told reporters, "I'm not worrying about next year. Worrying about next year isn't what wins awards, you know?"

He fashioned a 4-0 record, reeled off 30 strikeouts, worked 36 innings and held batters to a .216 average for the month as he posted a 1.00 ERA.

It thinks about it and then says "okay done" but it doesn't do that little bargraph uploading graphic". Beaudoin Wins CL Prize, Named Best Hitter in September
Sunday, October 1st, 2169: Carl Beaudoin is in the final year of his contract with Brooklyn and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 26 games in September the 31-year-old third baseman ripped Continental League pitchers for a .398 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 7 home runs, 26 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

If Beaudoin keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

This season Beaudoin is batting .327 with 194 hits, 34 home runs, 100 RBIs, 27 walks, .395 OBP and has scored 102 runs. He has played in 146 games.

Sunday, October 1st, 2169: Ramón Marín of the Hartford Riverhawks recorded a .400 batting average in September. His hitting spree racked up the Republic League Batter of the Month award for his trophy case.

Sunday, October 1st, 2169: When Yukinaga Tsushima takes the mound, a Halifax victory is usually the result. At least that's the way it was in September.

He excelled with a 5-0 mark and a 2.25 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 36 innings, fanned 23 and held opposing batters to a .203 average.

That's why the Winter Wolves starter was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the Continental League.

Sunday, October 1st, 2169: Whether Walt Stevens stays in Toronto beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In September the 33-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

He put up some fancy numbers with a 4-0 record and and an ERA of 2.14. In 42 innings he struck out 31, surrendered 44 hits, 3 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 6 starts last month.

Checking out his stats for the season, Stevens has registered 13 wins and 7 losses in 31 starts, 3.79 ERA and struck out 107 batters in 201.2 innings.

Halifax Starting Pitcher September's Top Rookie
Sunday, October 1st, 2169: Yukinaga Tsushima is beginning to make a name for himself and he did it by posting a 5-0 record and a 2.25 ERA in September. For his spectacular mound performance last month he has been named BNN's Rookie of the Month in the Continental League.

The 25-year-old newcomer isn't at all intimidated by his lack of experience, at least not outwardly. In fact, by the way he has pitched beyond his years, you could easily mistake him for a veteran.

In 5 starts for the Winter Wolves Tsushima has struck out 23 batters in 36 innings, holding opposing hitters to a batting average of .203 during his hot streak.

This season Tsushima has compiled a 11-13 record with a 6.09 ERA.

Sunday, October 1st, 2169: Bernard Hetherington's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Hammersmith shortstop has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.
