March Madness Starting Ten (2013)

Season 1 (Starting Eight)

BACK FOR ANOTHER YEAR, NOW WITH TWO MORE PLAYERS ADDED

Here's the premise:

1. You pick a roster of any 810 players from the NCAA tournament field.
2. You score as many points as each of your drafted players scores in the NCAA tournament.
3. You get a multiplier for the seed of his team. (i.e. if Nate Wolters of 14th seeded South Dakota State scores 18 points, you would earn 252 points.)
4. "First Four"/play-in round games do not count towards the players point total.
5. Deadline is tip-off of the first games on Thursday.
6. There's a multiplier to each round the player scores points in.

Quote:
So the 1st round (of 64) is just x1, each round after adds a x1 so:

Round of 32: x2
Sweet 16: x3
Elite 8: x4
Final 4: x5
Championship: x6

So if you have a guy who is a 1 seed who scores 20 points in the sweet 16, it'd be worth 60 points. If he's was on a 2-seed team that'd be 120 points and so forth. If you pick this year's VCU and manage to get them to the Final Four? Jackpot. But what's nice is, a 18 point game from a 3-seed in the Elite 8 is worth 216 points (18 x 3 x 4) which will make up a lot of ground from the guy who scored 288 points for his 16-seed who had a guy scoring 18 points in their one-and-done game. Make sense?

There is no draft, you just pick a roster of 10 players that you want. Make any changes you want up through the deadline, any edits after that will not be counted.

Have at it.

I would like to try two if that is ok. One would be all top seeds and the other players expected to lose in the first round. Would that be ok.

Post your actual "contest" entry and then I will share out a copy of the spreadsheet and you can create your own permutations to your heart's content. It's just data collection for a game like this is sort of PITA from the outset, so adding superflous entries adds to the work.

Thought I'd have a little fun with my roster. Clearly no meaning for points, but just fun for me to try to fill out an actual "roster". I can't find where I had the spreadsheet on Google Docs last year, so I don't remember what kind of team won last year. But I used this as a chance with 10 guys to basically have 5 guys from top 4 seeds and 5 guys from 5 and below seeds.

Starters:

C Kenny Kadji, Miami
F Deshaun Thomas, OSU
G Russ Smith, Louisville
G Seth Curry, Duke
G Andre Hollins, Minnesota

Bench:
F C.J. Fair, Syracuse
F Juvonte Reddic, VCU
G A.J. Davis, JMU
G Matthew Dellavedova, St. Mary's
G Marshall Henderson, Ole Miss

Hrm.. brit reposting his winning team makes me think I shouldn't have gone quite so low-seed heavy .

Well, I took a different tack this year, too. I can't dig up the spreadsheet, but I do remember that CJ Leslie was responsible for something like 1200 of the 3500 points I scored with NC State advancing to the Sweet 16. I just hit 100% on the relatively small number of low seeds, as Purdue and Texas both won a game, too.

Yeah.. and I think it was between me and you and I was fairly Low-Seed heavy. Really, one player, especially if few other people take him, can really carry your team in this game if you get lucky.

Most picked guys:

Deshaun Thomas - 8
Trey Burke - 7
Marshall Henderson - 6
Russ Smith - 5
Otto Porter - 5
Shane Larkin - 5
Doug McDermott - 5

And we had a whopping 18 players that only one of us picked. So, we should get some good variety here in scoring.

Singler not scoring much isn't part of the plan, but getting to the second round is huge. Not sure they can hang with St. Louis, but another win would be enormous.

If I'd used my strategy from Top Gun in this game, I'd have been better off, I wanted to avoid double-dipping on some of my favored lotto tickets and it cost me, as the ones I picked there managed to work out...or kept my original plan of chalk. But it's all good.

Digamma is looking good. He had two double digit seeds and a 6 seed move on - that will be a big boost in round 2 whether those teams win or not.
