House Republicans shared the following schedule regarding next steps in the speaker race and election:

The deadline for members to file their candidacy as speaker was Sunday at noon ET. Nine candidates are running for the position, House GOP conference chair Rep. Elise Stefanik announced.

The candidate forum will be held Monday at 6:30 p.m. ET. Members will be able to make their case to the GOP conference.

The secret ballot leadership election will take place Tuesday 9 a.m. ET.

The timing of a floor vote is still unclear.

I fail to see how this is going to get a different result. They're going to have someone win the majority of votes in the secret ballot, and then 4+ Republicans are going to vote against them on the floor.

It is a game of wearing down the holdouts. There are a couple that might never give unless they get exactly what they want (Gaetz being the main one), but most are tired of how bad this all looks. It is just going to be a matter of who is the most palatable for both sides to swallow. No one is getting everything they want at this point, but they are where something has to give.

I dont either. Emmer will probably win the secret ballot, Trump will come out against him and the far right won't support him. Same with Austin Scott. The others didn't vote to certify the 2020 election and will lose a few moderates.

Trump just said that Emmer called him yesterday and that Trump plans to stay out of the decision. Sounds like he is backing off his earlier objections to him. All you have to do is kiss the ring.

Emmer signed on to that insane lawsuit to overturn the election. He's not exactly a moderate. He's an authoritarian.

The process tomorrow.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...tes-rcna121673
Quote:
The meeting will kick off at 9 a.m. ET, with Republicans voting by secret ballot. Whoever earns the fewest votes in Round 1 will automatically drop out as an official candidate for speaker. That means that when we hit Round 2, it’ll be seven candidates. By Round 3, at least six, and so on.

But here’s a very important thing to remember: Once someone earns a majority in the room, that’s it. He’s the speaker designate, even if other candidates are left in the running.

I'm not sure I understand the 2nd paragraph. This means they could find a speaker designate in the first round of voting. But I'd think there'll be a bunch of others not "bought in" after only round #1 if the winner wins by a close vote.

I'd suggest do the round robin until it's down to 2 candidates. And then majority wins.

Regardless, it'll be fun watching how this plays out ...

Scott out.

Looks like Emmer will come out ahead. Will the others coalesce around him when it's done though.

Quote:
Emmer again received the most votes in the third round of voting.

Here's the latest vote tally, according to two sources:

Emmer - 100
Johnson - 43
Donalds - 32
Hern - 26
Scott- 12
Other- 3
Present- 3

26 GOPers voted that they won't support him on the floor, so we're back to where we started from.

Will Emmer cut a deal with Dems to finally put an end to this?

I keep hearing that he's a "moderate" or whatever that means. I mean, the moderate is still way far to the right than the average citizen. I guess he voted to certify, but he still stoked the flames of election denialism. It's like saying somebody is not really a prostitute because she only sucks dick for $$ and doesn't bang.

Jim Banks on Emmer

Quote:
GOP rep Jim banks from Indiana went on cnn and said "I came to Washington to fight for conservative values, I can't go along with putting one of the most moderate members of the entire republican conference un the speakers chair. That betrays the conservative values I came here to fight for"

So does being a moderate republican mean you're not a conservative?

They are going to hold out for a Donaldson or Mike Johnson. They need a real nut to stop anything from getting passed and to shut down the government.
I was hanging out with my NSA friend this weekend. He told me even though he is a head of a section that directly deals with the ME (and the past couple of weeks has been the busiest they have ever been), he will be sent home for a shutdown. He said he wouldn't mind the break, especially now where they still get paid even if the government is shut down.
Can someone tell me where this big financial savings is coming from if taxpayers are still paying people's salaries for doing nothing? Of course we are also paying congress' salaries for doing nothing, so....

Scaling back operations and missions saves money. For example, in our hospital, if we do furlough people then they're still getting paid. However, we're seeing less patients, doing less MRIs, ect.

This depends on the contract. Some of our contracts are paid up-front each year and are guaranteed so those contractors get paid regardless.

So when Jordan was the Speaker Designate, a ton of folks were ordering his opposition to fall in line for the good of the party. "We need a Speaker!"

Now that the Speaker Designate is only 90% MAGA, these same people are falling all over themselves to say they will vote against him.

CNN reporting lots of resistance because of Trump’s thumbs down. The civil war continues.

Quote:
Uphill battle: Multiple Republicans say Emmer’s bid to be speaker is on the verge of collapse as he faces opposition from the right flank of the GOP conference and fresh attacks waged by former President Donald Trump. Emmer can only afford to lose four Republicans, and 26 voted against him in a roll call vote after he won the nomination. The House GOP is expected to reconvene their closed-door meeting this afternoon and Emmer is meeting with holdouts in the meantime, members say.

I've generally agreed that the Dems should sit on the sideline and watch the shitshow but this is going to end with a Trumper in there. They should jump in and support someone they can live with. I wonder if that's why Emmer couldn't even get to a vote because the Trumpers were concerned he'd get some Dem votes.

I think the plan is to carry out the speaker fight until after the continuing resolution expires to shutdown the government.
