Our Monthly reminder that Sepp Blatter's an idiot
I know, we don't need a reminder, but hell, he makes it so easy...
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has proposed scrapping draws in soccer, saying every game should have a winner. In an idea which would revolutionise the world's most popular sport if adopted, Blatter suggested that games could be decided by a penalty shoot-out in the case of a draw. 'Every game should have a winner,' Blatter, president of soccer's ruling body, told German sports news agency SID. 'When you play cards or any other game, there's always a winner and a loser. We should have the courage to introduce a final decision in every game of football.' Blatter said the best way would be penalties but added he would study any other proposal. 'Penalties remain the best way to decide a game in the case of a draw but if anybody has a better idea, I am ready to listen to it,' he said. 'A game is about emotions. There is passion. It can be dramatic. At the end of it it's almost always a tragedy. 'We can't be satisfied with draws. (Modern Olympic Games founder) Pierre de Coubertin has said that the important thing was to take part, not to win. 'That's not true. In life you have a goal and in sport, too, you have a goal which you want to achieve.'

Yeah, having the World Cup every year was another great idea by this tit.
Edit: read at another board that a small league tried this idea some 15 years ago and failed, since all the bad teams would play for a draw, in hope of getting lucky in the penalty shoot-out.

To be fair, I think every soccer game should end with a homerun hitting contest... And Fox should make the ball glow on the games they broadcast.

A) All bad teams do play for a draw in hopes of getting a point. B) The MLS had a shootout for like 4 or 5 years until the fan revolt finally became too much. Then they moved to just overtime. Now, finally, its just 90+ minutes of soccer and no extra crap. |

I like a proposal my brother came up with a while back for dealing with ties. Play 10 v 10 for 5 minutes, then 9 v 9, and so on until it was 1 v 1 (or a team scores). Yes, I realize this would never work in a television era, but it would be an exciting ending to a game.

Wouldn't whoever's left in a 1v1 contest practically be dying of exhaustion? They've already run for 90 (closer to 100 with injury time) regulation minutes and then you're talking about another 45 minutes after that to get to 1v1. Not to mention a football pitch isn't the easiest thing to run end-to-end. Now, if you sent them off every minute....

Jeez... what's wrong with a tie in the regular season? What, being the world's most popular sport isn't enough for you, you need to 'jazz' up the game? Screw that, hockey's got ties as well and for the same reason soccer does: a shootout would make a mockery of the whole game and playing until you drop would severly deplete the player ranks.

Has anything Blatter has suggested been implemented, or not scrapped soon after implementation? The only thing I can think of is rotating the World Cup region, which I think is a pretty stupid idea itself, and could lead to a disaster of a World Cup in 2010.

If a game ends in a draw, they should let democracy take over and let the fans vote for who the winner is. At least then more than half the crowd will go home happy.
Ok, it's a stupid idea, but I think Blatter might like it. |
