Misuse of the word "myself"

It angers me greatly. Excuse me, in the words of 5 million idiots out there, I meant to say that it angers myself.

That is all.

I myself am one of those 5 million idiots.

That and my overuse of the hyphen continue to plague me.

Speaking only for myself, I'd have to say that I wouldn't let yourself get angry over something so absolutely pointless.

HFP -

You did not use it incorrectly in that sentence.

Desnudo -

Myself thanks yourself for the advice. While myself is not really angry about it, itself is more of a pet peeve of myself's.

I thought about starting a similar thread yesterday. A co-worker has drilled this into my head, so every time I hear it used improperly now, I shudder.

1) IMTG is correct, even though he had a typo in his post and even though I hate when it is referred to as SFA.

Allow me to clarify myself. Irregardless of your feelings about yourself's reaction to the misusage, which, in and of itself, could be considered overreacting, I'm always happy to oblige.

If you get upset over grammar, you need to find something more useful to focus your time on. Get out of your home and volunteer somewhere, help society, teach children, or simply get a hobby.

As long as it doens't involve spelling or writing you should be ok.

At least a b in skill/performance.

C or below in fame/recognition, so therefore, really a C.

I would revise my initial estimate. Considering you'd get a lot of blank looks if you dropped his name at a party he's really low, a D. Considering even people who know who he is would wonder why you mentioned his name, he's an F. Although I disagree with B in skill/performance I'll let that rating stand. However, fame/recognition is much more important than talent when evaluating name dropping. So: 85 + 55(2)/3 = 65 or D.

I was serious to the point that getting upset over someone else's grammar is a complete waste of your time.

instead of wasting energy spouting off about it, be out there in your community teaching it.

I mean, come on, grammar is important if you're writing something professionally or for a class or as your job. But in general conversation grammar != dialect, which is how conversations take place.

I just think its utterly stupid to get upset over something so intrinsicly(sp?) unimportant in general conversation.

and to reply to someone else, my typing ability is terrible, my spelling is generally good though.

That's the problem. I notice it more often at work than elsewhere. The problem is caused by idiots trying to sound more official. In their attempt to do so, they end up sounding like the idiots they are.

I just came from a meeting, where I was subjected to a lengthy sales pitch about a financial services firm. The speaker, in his first three minutes, managed to both misuse the term "himself" in this fashion, and also sneak in another of my personal favorites... "extremely unique."

If part of your business is selling your attention to detail - I think you need to do better than that.

The word "unique" takes no qualifier. Something is either unique (one of a kind) or it isn't, period. There's no very unique, most unique, or extremely unique -- just unique, that's it.

It's a common case of people just adding superfluous words to try to sound more emphatic.

That minivan has 215 horsepower. Vroom vroom. Not that it's a lot, but it's an upgrade over my SUV that I traded in enginewise.

I have no problems being a minivan man. You have two kids and it'll happen. I do have a problem with the misuse of reflexive pronouns.

I'm not making fun of the minivan. I'm making fun of a minivan called "Big Pimpin'." Although society, including families with two kids, did make it through all right the past eight thousand years or so without them. Just stick a couple of milk crates in the back of that truck. I've already taken a blood oath never to get a minivan myself...

Maybe there's a kid's show that can be created around you. There's a new sheriff in town and he don't like misused reflexive pronouns.

I prefer not to have children ride in milk crates. I'm a crazy dude.

And I thought the Big Pimpin' name was pretty clearly a joke, but you can go ahead and call it that.

I suppose this might pass, to then extent that one meant "so rare as to be nearly one of a kind." I find this usage to be a little loose, but probably acceptable.

I guess technically, what I should say is that the word "unique" accepts no qualifiers to its degree.

As for "coincidence"... I'd say that any use of "big" or "small" to adjoin to the word is inherently loose usage at best. I don't see that phrase as really being idiomatic - rather, it's just people who don't have very many words under their command using the best fits that can muster. (That's the story for most of these situations)

Maybe he is a good Texan, as in a pickup you can only fit one gun rack. In a minivan you can fit 47.
