Just got back from Port Clinton, OH and one of the things I missed was a trip to Put-in-Bay. From what the local bartenders were telling me, it's a fairly wild place. A few friends and I were thinking about heading back there (perhaps for Labor Day), but is it really anything special, or just a typical strip of bars... only on an island?

Put-in-Bay (PIB) is a good time but not sure I would travel long distances just to go. It's mostly an older crowd (being 31 I guess I'm part of that older crowd now) but they defiantly let loose on the island. I would say there are 7-8 restaurant/bars central located and a few others around the island. The most popular bar is the Beer Barrel which is supposedly the longest bar in the country. It's a huge place/bar and they have nightly entertainment (most do). If you go and Pat Daily or the Menus are playing - then go see them. They are both pretty entertaining. **Note: Holiday weekends are usually crazy there - sometimes to busy IMO.

I've had about five or six visits to the island and never had a good time. The place is expensive for just about everything (drinks, lodging and food). I think we paid $250 for a crappy motel room. I'd pass.

They have tamed it down over the last several years, it used to get very crazy. However it is still a good time, especially with a good group of friends. CleBrownsfan summed it up pretty well. Go check out the bars, listen to some of the live music, buy some beads to give to the ladies, drink and have a good time. I dont think I would travel from Va just to come here, but if you happen to be around this area again go check it out.

I grew up right on the shore of Lake Erie, directly below but within a short boat ride of either Put-In-Bay and Kelley's Island. I have stayed on each of the those islands for weeks at a time. I have been to the Beer Barrel Saloon, the Old Roundhouse, and Frosty's (all on South Bass Island) at least ten times each, and have probably thrown up in each restroom at least once. I have probably heard Pat Dailey play live there at least six times. And I basically enjoyed pretty much all of it.
But, frankly, it's just a typical strip of bars, on an island. I don't have anything at all against bars or the recreation opportunitites they offer -- but to suggest that there's some sort of lovely scenery or other particularly tourist-worthy stuff to do at Put-In-Bay is really over-selling the place. Go out, have a few drinks, maybe a few more, and have fun. Nothing all that special they don't offer in, ohidunno... Burke, VA. |
