FOOL News: Free Agents File
Friday, December 3rd, 2060: Today marks the beginning of Front Office Offseason League's free agent filing period. When I saw that Winter contract I thought "he's a bit old for that", but he's only 27. I forgot he came up to the bigs at 20 years old.

Whoa! Eduardo Lopez was not supposed to accept my freaking arbitration offer. I don't want him back at 8 million dollars, I want my draft pick compensation!

I had some really tough decisions in the offseason to make. No more of that, I had 5 Type A free agents and 4 of them under 27 years of age.

Thats the chance you take lol. I must confess I like it happening once in a while. This will make people think it over a bit more. I know I will have a closer look at it in the future because of this reminder. Sorry it was you it happened to though.

It's "the second round" but it only has as many picks as there are teams with comp. If 4 teams get compensation for Type A signings then after round one is done those four teams will get picks and then on to round 2.

Draft class looks very very deep. Did we adjust the pcm's or is this just X thinking our league needs a talent boost?

Well, we voted in a draft talent increase, and Alan made mention of it the other day, so I would imagine that is what we're seeing. Not to say X isn't doing its own thin, too (I'm not familiar enough with the way X was designed to make that call).

Even though I personally wasn't in favor of a league talent bump, the majority was so I did implement that. I think you should see fairly deep draft classes for a while, but eventually ootp might end up compensating some (no idea, we'll have to see) |

I do admit I forgot we voted on that. My bad.
Hopefully things will simmer down in a few seasons. The way this class stacks up the person with the last pick isn't getting much less than the person with the first.

Hooray I get Ann Arbor's Draft pick!
Now the question is can I survive with the 3-man starting rotation... |

Can someone please confirm if I have the 3rd or 4th pick? Halifax and I are tied and I'm afraid I might actually have the latter.
Not that it matters, there are at least 10 different players I can see going in the top 5. The SP's are good but not good enough to warrant an automatic #1 selection. Should be interesting to see where everyone falls. Someone sign Gustavo Gomez already!

The draft order tab is likely the right order. I have very seldom seen it go against that order. For the record I said seldom because I have seen it not be that a few times.

I agree. Based on the fact that the talent may hold at this level for a few years I am torn about how to handle the first pick. I almost always go SP because of the drop off in numbers and the availability of position players later but if we are going to see more drafts like this I might chance that we see a better SP group later. Decisions, decisions...

Maybe I spoke too soon. Ann Arbor drafted my type A player, yet he still have his draft pick and I get a supplemental draft pick instead. Maybe I interpretted that wrong. |

You won't get the first rounder if it's in the top half of the round. Just the supplemental at that point. If Ann Arbor were to have a pick in the bottom half then you would get 2 picks; his 1st rounder and a supplemental.

ugh! that makes no sense. I mean I guess I think it's cool not to ever take away great picks from a losing team (which makes me feel a little better about the ubertalented draft pool since good teams can lose their pick easily), but why not give 2 supplemental picks instead of one in this case.
If someone from the bottom half took my type A the 1st round and the supp pick are so close together anyway that it's like getting 2 supps. That's very odd. Last edited by CrimsonFox : 03-19-2010 at 04:41 PM. |

You should get Ann Arbor's 2nd round pick plus a supplemental pick. You'll always get 2 draft picks for a type A free agent. |

Not quite. You still get two picks. The team losing the player gets the buying team's second rounder instead of the first. The top half of the first round is protected from free agency compensation. So the two picks will be the second and the supplemental.

Ah cool. That part confused me. It looked like I'd only get one. Cool. I'm liking compensation/ubertalent more and more now that I see there are some "crappy team" protectors and balancers in place. Thanks for the clarification guys

I went into the History section and did a quick count. Non-DH-users have won 55 of the 100 Classics played. I would imagine, though, that a lot more went into it than whether or not the teams came from a DH or non-DH league, though.

Between Alan needing to do a quick sim, and Jason Holmes for some reason not showing up on the retired list, it was a rather quiet retirement for one of the more notable pitchers in the league in recent years.
He actually retired too soon--I was prepared to bring him back for my #4 rotation spot to try to get him to 300 wins. Unfortunately, despite the fact that Holmes himself was only asking for an MLC, the game had strangely labeled him a Type A free agent, despite two more or less awful seasons with Hyannis, the only two he did not pitch as a Hooligan. Holmes ends his career having won 9 RL Prado awards, tying him with New York great Juan Sierra for the most such awards in FOOL history. Only the always amazing Emmett Quero has won more Prados in either league (10). What is most notable is that Holmes did his work in one of the more offensive eras in RL history--and in the DH league. He never pitched in the CL. In his 17 seasons as a major leaguer, the league-wide era headed north of a 5 ERA 8 times, and it never fell lower than 4.80. Prior to 1944, the league ERA topped 5.00 23 times, which still sounds a lot, but this is in 83 years (28% of the time), as opposed to 47% of time during Holmes' career. Holmes finished with a seemingly uninspiring 3.195 career ERA (51st in FOOL history) until you look at how many of the pitchers ahead of him were RL starters for most if not all of their careers. There is a large number of relievers who could always bring their best, and most of the rest are pitchers who toiled away in the pitcher-friendly CL. The only primarily RL SPs in FOOL history with a better career ERA are Juan Sierra (of course), Hammersmith's own Ryuichi Hasegawa, Guillermo Arrojo and Ron Fritz. For his career, Holmes finished with a 294-144 record and 3059 Ks. He was a 12-time All Star and won four rings. He was the 2044 RL Bennie Myers award winner and the 2057 Commissioner award winner. In 11 postseason visits, Holmes started 35 games and went 20-7 with a 2.93 ERA. His most amazing year might have been his very first, in 2044. Not only did he win the Bennie Myers, he also won his first Prado, started and won the All Star game for the RL and then pitched a complete game shutout in the Classic clinching victory. He finished 15th in career wins, 5th in win % (.671), 20th-tied in shutouts (22), 57th in Ks, 68th in opp. OBP (.3041), 39th in opp. OPS (.6717), 6th in total VORP (1189.95) and 20th in BB/9 (1.403). He led the RL in wins 6 times, Ks 5 times and ERA 9 times, and he won pitching's Triple Crown in 2051. Obviously, I wanted to at least take a moment to acknowledge him here. There have been better starting pitchers--but, IMO, the list is not long. I hope everyone in the league gets the chance to have players like Holmes (or Quero or Sierra or Gonzalez or Lemieux or; etc.). Thanks for your indulgence.

Okay, on second thought, that is a lot of draft talent. I expected the increase, but, wow, the depth is off the charts. The top guys, there aren't that many more, IMO, than usual, but the drop off is much more gradual, especially for hitters.
It will be interesting to see how we negotiate this, as enough draft classes like this are going to reshape the FOOL landscape. I fully endorse Alan making whatever adjustments he needs to tweak things if need be (and I hope everyone else will, too).

I am a bit unsettled how many round 1 and supplemental draft picks Hammersmith and Baltimore got. I mean do they NEED any more help to win?
