FOOLX News: Free Agents File
Sunday, November 21st, 1999: The stroke of midnight signaled the arrival of the often wild and unpredictable free agent filing period. Most general managers across the FOOLX already have an iron or two in the fire. The players, too, are well-prepared for negotiations. The only participant to get a true head start was the rumor mill, which has been steadily building up heat over the past several weeks. General managers have the whole offseason to work the free agent market, but the big explosion will probably come quickly as some of these hot properties hit the market today: 1. Mike Gillingham, 31 year-old first baseman 2. Luis Torres, 27 year-old first baseman 3. Guillaume Bélanger, 31 year-old left fielder 4. Juan Tañón, 30 year-old first baseman 5. Yang-cheng Mei, 25 year-old right fielder 6. Ricardo Cedeño, 30 year-old third baseman 7. Pedro Moreno, 38 year-old right fielder 8. Seung-kab Chon, 30 year-old starting pitcher 9. Salvador Moreno, 27 year-old center fielder 10. Raúl Gómez, 27 year-old starting pitcher |

This may be a moral imperative draft pick for me:
Michigan, March 4, 2000 (AP) - Disappointed by his projected draft rating, Michigan QB Tom Brady has decided to enter the FOOL-X baseball draft. "I'd love to play QB, but there just isn't much interest out there" Tom said. "But several baseball teams seem interested in my skills as a second baseman, and I'm tired of taking the hits anyway." Most consider this a non-story since he was a reach to be a backup QB anyway, but there was some disappointment within the Patriots organization who thought Tom might have a future. "He wasn't going to start right away thanks to his shared duties at Michigan, but Tom is a smart, accurate QB that might do something in the NFL with a few years of seasoning and development," one New England scout was quoted as saying. Apparently no one will know now, as Brady seems pretty happy with his decision.

I have a question about compensation... I have the 1st pick in the supplemental round via Ann Arbor and Virginia Beach has the 3rd in the supplemental via Ann Arbor...However, they have their 2nd round pick and I ended up with Ann Arbor's 3rd round pick, should that not be reversed?

I think the placement of the supplemental pick is based on the guy that was signed. (ie the better the player signed, the better the pick for the losing team). The other pick is based on the timing, so it depends on the sequence of the signing. So AA signed a better player from you than from VB, but they signed the guy from VB first. I think that's it. And what the hell? You sign Moreno from me and you get a better supplemental pick as well? That bites!

I don't think the supplemental round order is determined by the caliber of player signed.
The draft is unfair sometimes. It happens to all of us.

I believe if I remember right it is: Type A Supplemental picks first, Type B supplemental picks second. Then within each group of Type A/B picks, they go in order of when the Type A/B free agent were signed. So the first supplemental pick goes to the team whose Type A free agent was signed first. |

Hey Alan, Quick compensation question, in case you know. If the player being compensated for signs a minor league deal, does that void his compensation? I noticed I ddin't get a supplemental pick for Type B FA closer Yamada, who signed with Stafford. Thanks!

Havana nabbed the top 2 picks in the supplemental round out of nowhere (they weren't on the supplemental draft list before the ST sim) so it certainly doesn't award picks based on when the player was signed. Not saying we need to do anything about this, just pointing it out so people don't take Alan's words as gospel and expect the 1st pick in the supplemental round if their Type A player is signed first.
I think the only thing that's certain about drafting w/ compensation is that the system has it flaws. Let's try not to get too worried about this pick or that pick in the supplemental when the game is clearly going to do whatever the hell it wants.\

Also all of the supplemental picks were grouped by team. Any team that had multiple supplemental picks had them together. Is this a regular thing?

That would suggest that the primary locator wasn't how the pick was acquired (Type A or Type B) or the quality of players involved, but maybe team record? I don't know; I stopped trying to figure it out shortly after buying OOTP10. Kevin's probably right that we should probably do our best to ignore the flaws and move on, since they're minor enough (everyone's getting their picks somewhere at least) for us to ignore. I would still like to know if Alan has any insight on my question re: a Type B free agent signing an MLC, though, and whether that affects if compensation is rewarded. It might affect how I make offers in the future (although it's rare for a player to reach that status and yet decide to accept an MLC).
