DDSCB: Living on a Prayer - George Mason Patriots (or as long as until they fire me)

Time to do a dynasty on DDS:CB

Game Settings:
Underclassmen declare for the draft
Conference movement allowed
Rating Scale: 1-10
Do not use Limited Ratings
Illegal Recruiting on

Coach Ratings:

Name: Edric Chan
Age: 35
Ambition: High
Academics: High
Discipline: High
Integrity: High
Temper: Average
I decided on creating an average coach, with pro-level potential. I put less emphasis on everything, but jacked-up my recruiting stats.
Offense: 45/60
Defense: 45/60
Scouting: 45/60
Recruiting: 90/90
Developing: 50/55

Coach Philosophies:

All ratings are from 1-10

Player Rotation: The higher the rating, the more I tend to use a deep bench. For not, I start off with a median 5.

Defensive Intensity: The higher the rating, the more tenacious the d.i., the lower the rating, the more my defenders sag. I am a proponent of good defense over a good offense, and have this rating at 7.

Player Preference: The higher the rating, the more I am inclined to play veterans instead of youth. Like player rotation, this will move accordingly each season. For now, it's at 5.

Defense Crash Boards: Higher rating = crash boards on defense, lower rating, more players runnning on the break. Setting this at 5.

Offense Crash Boards: Higher rating = crash boards on offense, lower rating, perimeter players defend more against the break. Set at 5.

Full Court Defense: The higher the rating, the more I am inclined to play full court defense as part of the game plan. I only wish to press sparingly, and concentrate more on my half-court d. Setting this at 3.

Offensive Pace: How quickly does the offense look for shots in the half-court. A higher rating means faster pace, allowing for more shots. A lower rating means slower pace, means more ball movement and set plays. I will set this on 5 for now.

Zone Defense: How often do I play zone defense? I will have to look at my team before I decide this, so I will set it at 5 for now.

And now...

Assistant Coaches:

Here are my assistant coaches, all of them locked up for four years.
1st Assistant Coach:
Brian Johnson, 50

Ambition: V.Low
Academics: High
Discipline: High
Temper: Average
Offense: 30

2nd Assistant Coach:
Terrance Riddick, 46
Contract: $44,000 / 4 years
Reputation: 37
Ambition: High
Academics: High
Discipline: V.Low
Temper: Average
Offense: 30
Defense: 30
Recruiting: 32
Scouting: 31
Player Development: 30

3rd Assistant Coach:
Steve Calloway, 38
Contract: $17,000 / 4 years
Reputation: 9
Ambition: High
Academics: High
Discipline: V.High
Temper: Average
Offense: 20
Defense: 21
Recruiting: 21
Scouting: 20
Player Development: 60

Brian Johnson will be helping me out with recruiting, Terrance Riddick will be my scouting assistant, while Calloway's development skills will help me during team practice.

Pre-season Recruiting Decisions:

Let's take a look at our recruiting budget.

We have a total budget of $188,750, subtract my Assistant Coach salaries, a total of $138,000, and I have $50,750 left to spend.

I have five scholarships to offer, and will have all positions to fill. I am going to recruit for all five positions, not an easy task for a low-presitge school.

I now have to choose to buy which Scouting Report I wish to purchase. I am only interested in recruiting out of the Atlantic East and, quite possibly, only in-state. I decide that the $30,000 Gold Star Edition of the Atlantic East scouting report is going to gut my recruiting budget, and decide on the Basic Edition, which only costs $5,000. The difference is that with the Basic Edition I get the top 200-rated recruits for the region and information wether he is interested in my school. The Gold-Edition ranks each player overall and by position and gives me a 1-5 star rating for each player, as well as the teams in the running for that player.

I also have a choice to atten any summer camps to scout out players. I am tempted to spend for the camps, but decide against it. I doubt I will be able to recruit many top-100 region players, and it's a waste of an extra $3,700 to spend on the Big Apple Showcase.

Up next, a report on how Pre-season Recruiting went for George Mason.

Pre-Season Recruiting:

We spend a lot of time trying to convince recruits to visit out school, but most of those that we do attract end up leaving disappointed. I did bag three guys and somehow convinced them to give us a verbal acceptance. I am definitely looking for David Demory to sign up, as well as Leon Bush.

Verbal Agreements:

SF Chris Reese - 6'6", 233 lbs. Falmouth, ME (National Overall: 1276, National Position: 255)
PF Kevin Morris - 6'8", 203 lbs. Skipwith, VA (National Overall: 1434, National Position: 291)
SG Derek Walton - 6'3", 218 lbs. Norfolk VA (National Overall: 1602, National Position: 333)

Waiting for response:

C Daniel Demory - 6'10", 276 lbs. Richmond, VA (National Overall: 932, National Position: 164)
PF Leon Bush - 6'6", 195 lbs. Virginia Beach, VA (National Overall: 1715, National Position: 346)

Question: How did you get the rosters and such to output like that?

Depth Chart:

We are going to use the following depth chart as a guideline for the season.

Starting Lineup
Player Pos PPG APG RPG SPG BPG
Jason Gilbert PG

Austin Walker SG

Austin Hastie SF

Willis Jacobson PF

Detric Slade C

Bench Depth Chart
Player Pos PPG APG RPG SPG BPG
Jerome Hazelton PG

John Rude SF

David Tompson C

Tim McClain C

Jordan Spurgeon SF

William Monfre PG

Eric Younger SG

Brian Collins SG

Kris Patterson PF

Hollis Sowder PG

Jason Gilbert is, by far, the best player on this team, and we will tailor our offense to get the most out of him.

Our offensive sets are set to Flex (70) and Triangle (30), while our half-court defensive sets are M2M (75) and 1-2-2 (25). Our press set is M2M (100).

I have set Offensive Freedom to 75%, and Offense Sets to 25%. Offense focus is set to balanced.

I tweak my philosophies a bit, putting offensive Pace to 7, and Zone Defense to 3. I want Gilbert to be able to shoot more, and at the same time, utilize the team's proficiency in man-to-man defense.

George Mason @ IPFW Scouting Report

The roster comparison has us holding only a one-position advantage (PG) against the Mastodons. We have even ground in the SG and C positions. They hold an advantage over us in the SF and PF positions. Their bench is better than ours.

Offensive Style: IPFW runs a normal paced offense w/ some offensive freedom baskets. They sport a balanced attack with their primary set being the triangle offense.

Defensive Style: IPFW press at points throughout the game. In the half-court, their primary defense is man-to-man, and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

George Mason @ IPFW
November 16, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason

- Close out on perimiter shooters - don't give free looks
- Be disciplined on defense and force them out of their half court offensive sets
- Run the offense - easy buckets with good execution equals a W

IPFW
- Be careful - they like to run the floor for quick shots
- Close out on perimiter shooters - don't give free looks
- Play hard for the full 40 - any letdown could be costly

Game:

IPFW wins the jump, and miss three straight field goal attempts on two offensive rebounds. Let's hope this continues. We turn it over, however, and they draw first blood with a 3-pointer from PG Ben Walker. We hit our first basket two minutes into the game, a short jumper from C Detric Slade.

Twelve minutes into the 1st half, and IPFW pulls into an 18-9 lead. We hit eight straight points via Monfre and Hazelton, and close it down to 18-17 three minutes later. Both teams then go into a scoring run. We do get them into the penalty early, but fail to capitalize, making on 4/8 free-throws.

With about a minute and a half left in the half, we take six straight attempts, and making the last, with five offensive rebounds in one play.

The first half ends with the score at 31-30 in favor of IPFW. Jason Gilbert is scoreless, 0/7 from the field, with only 2 assists and 2 rebounds. Jerome Hazelton and Detric Slade lead GMU in scoring with 8 and 7 points respectively. Slade, however, is 3/13... we have to improve his shot selection.

Jason Gilbert starts the 2nd half well, driving to the lane and asserting himself, scoring his first basket of the night. Gilbert scores two more times, and we tie the game at 36-36 4 minutes into the 2nd half. They quickly answer with a triple, and a couple of field goals to pull away once again. We are held scoreless in the next 4 minutes before Slade finally hits a jumper to make the score 43-38 with 12 minutes left in the game.

We rally hard, and hold the Mastadons to only one made three-point shot in the next 6 minutes. We score twelve points on bench players Hazelton, Rude and Tompson to tie take the lead at 50-46 with 6 minutes left in the game. As if on cue, they come back with a deuce and a trifecta to take the lead back 51-50, 5 minutes left.

Both teams remain scoreless the next minute and a half, until John Rude hits a running jumper to let us take the lead, 52-51, 3 minutes and a half left. Thirty seconds later, they nail a post-up short jumper to grab it back from us, 53-52. This one might go down the wire. We exchange baskets again, 55-54 IPFW lead, 2 minutes left in the game.

They attack our basket, and nail a lay-up, and we're unable to respond, turning it over unnecessarily, 57-54 IPFW, 1 minute left in the game. They hold on to the ball, until they find SG Alex Robinson outside, who hit a dagger of a three. That just might be the ballgame. 60-54, IPFW, 0:44 left. We call a 60-second time-out.

Gilbert tries to shoot a quick jumper, but it rattles out. They grab the board, and we're forced to send them to the line. The game ends, and we lost our first game of the season to the IPFW Mastadons 62-54. There were 11 lead-changes, and 3 ties during the game.

There will be a lot of tweaking to do. Jason Gilbert and Detric Slade had a horrible shooting night. Jerome Hazelton has made a solid case for him to start over Gilbert. We just let them light us up from the three-point line, jeez.

Post-Game Moves:

After that disappointing loss, I take the time to reasses my squad. I decide to move Hazelton into the starting line-up as my starting SG. Austin Walker is demoted to the bench and asked to shoot more 3's / fewer jumpers. I tell Detric Slade to shoot more from the post and shoot less of those 15-foot bricks. I also tell SF Austin Hastie to shoot more 3's in exchange of jumpshots.

I insert freshman PF Kris Patterson and C Tim McClain in the bench rotation. I demote C David Tompson out of the rotation to allow for these two young big men to play.

Here is how the line-up looks:

(As a side note, I watch the games, but do not play them. I remove the check from my name so I don't "coach" the team, but rather have the CPU coach the team based on my preferences/instructions. I find it more fun to do this, and I can really watch how my instructions are played out, and enjoy the game without worrying of micromanagement.)

Central Arkansas @ George Mason Scouting Report

We have the advantage over the PG spot, are even at the C and SG spots, and they have the advantage at SF and PF. I have the bench advantage. This scouting report is a week or so old, though, so we'll see when the game is played.

Offensive Style: Central Arkansas runs a normal paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport a balanced attack with their primary set being the motion offense.

Defensive Style: Central Arkansas rarely seems to press. In the half court their primary defense is man-to-man and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

We set Offensive Freedom to 25%, and Offensive sets at 75%. I think my team isn't ready to run their own offense, as evident by all those horrible shots the last game.

Central Arkansas (1-0) @ George Mason (0-1)
November 19, 2007

Game Keys:

Central Arkansas

- Find Willis Jacobson on shots - he's their top rebounder
- Keep tabs on Jerome Hazelton - he's their playmaker on the floor
- Shot selection is key - an average scoring offense needs to find good shots

George Mason
- Feed off the crowd energy - get the momentum early
- Break their presses for easy baskets
- Play hard for the full 40 - any letdown could be costly

Game:

We own the tip, but are unable to convert. We exchange bricks, and UCA hits the first basket of the game at 18:29. Gilbert picks up two early fouls, and he heads to the bench at 18:06. The first five minutes of the game consist of terrible shot selection from both teams. We are up 6-3, however.

Baskets are exchanged, and we both have good offensive sets. Austin Walker is called for his 2nd foul, and now I have my starting PG and his back-up on the bench in early foul trouble. The game is tied 11-11 with 11:05 to go in the half. UCA's 6'9" C Tim Williams slams a vicious dunk on 6'5" SG William Monfre. Ouch. William Monfre then commits his second foul at 9:15. He heads to the bench and Brian Collins is up. It's like a hitting line-up out there. We keep it close without our starters, 15-15, with 8:45 left. Like clockwork... Brian Collins commits his 2nd foul at 8:02... and here's Hollis Sowder to take his place.

The score is 23-22 UCA, with 6:01 left, and William Monfre comes in... only to be yanked back out by comitting his 3rd foul. Brian Collins takes his chances. Gilbert is still on the bench.

SG Marcus Thompson lights us up, hitting 3 triples, giving them a 34-24 lead with 3:25 to go. Gilbert and Hazelton com back into the game to bring some SANITY. At 2:37, Gilbert touches the opposing SG's arm, and he is assesed with his 3rd foul. Thank you for playing, Gilbert!

Austin Walker comes back in, and he brings some scoring, hitting three straight shots for us, to bring us to 36-29, 1:48 left in the half.

The half ends, with UCA up 39-31. We are shooting 12-33 from the field, and we've comitted God knows how many fouls (15, actually). Austin Walker responds from his benching by leading us in scoring with 10 points. Gilbert has only played a total of 3 minutes for the game so far.

The second half begins, and Austin Hastie commits his 3rd foul. He is yanked out, and John Rude comes in.

The next five minutes consists of Marcus Thompson torching us from everywhere. 15:34 left in the game, and they're up 51-39. Thompson has already scored 25 points.

Jason Gilbert returns at 14:56... DON'T FOUL ANYONE, YOU DUMB SHIT! YOU'RE THE BEST PLAYER ON THIS TEAM!

The next five minutes are painful, as we miss shot after shot. Gilbert commits his 4th foul at 10:17, and we are down 60-42. The foul carousel continues as Monfre gets his 4th at 8:26. We;re starting to lose hope, the lead has balooned to 20, 64-44.

Thompson hits another three point shot, and we are down big 73-49. Thompson has 36 points. IT has turned into a blowout. Jason GIlbert comes back in at 5:01 to try and salvage this game from being a complete waste.

The last three minutes sees more of Thompson killing out defense. We finally get rid of the guy at 2:42, as he commits his 5th foul. He leaves the floor with 41 motherf'n points. Hazelton looks like he just got rid of a bad mother-in-law. With Thompson out, he proceeds to score ten straight points. The game ends with UCA winning 80-62. I will have to think more about match-ups and game pace. We were shooting a lot of bricks out there. Gilbert had a horrible game, and Hazelton was saddled with a severe height disadvantage against a much more talented guard.

We need to do something about our inability to make baskets. I set defense crash boards to 3, to see if my guys run the break more. Defensive intensity is put at 5, that foul carousel the last game was horrendous. Full court defense is set to 3, I want us to concentrate on stopping the ball in the half-court set.

Offensive sets is set at 50%, and offensive freedom is at 50%. We also set our offense focus to favor outside shots.

I figure Jerome Hazelton is better off coming off the bench, and promote Austin Walker back into the starting line-up. If Jason Gilbert fails to deliver on the next game, Hazelton will be promoted to starting PG.

David Tompson goes back into the line-up, as Kris Patterson is sent to the end of the bench again. I want to see how Tim McClain fares further down the stretch. He's 7'4" and 300 pounds for crying out loud.

Here is how the line-up looks:

George Mason @ NJIT Scouting Report

We have the advantage over the PG spot, are even everywhere else, We have the bench advantage as well.

Offensive Style: NJIT runs a slow paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport an inside attack with their primary set being the triangle offense.

Defensive Style: Central Arkansas press at points throughout the game. In the half court their primary defense is 1-3-1 zone and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

George Mason (0-2) @ NJIT (1-1)
November 23, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason
- Keep tabs on Bobby Sneed - he's their playmaker on the floor
- Figure out how to slow down Larry Faulkner - he's their offensive star
- Take away the inside shots and force them to shoot long jumpers

NJIT

- Larry Faulkner needs to have a big game on the glass
- Be careful - they like to run the floor for quick shots
- Get Larry Faulkner going early - he needs a big game tonight

Game:

NJIT wns the tip, and Jaosn Gilbert is whistled for a foul at 19:56!!!! Wow. They brick a shot, and we score the first basket on an Austin Hastie rebound of a Slade miss.

Five minutes in, and we are up 9-8, courtesy of some nice shooting from Detric Slade... if he can only find consistency.

Jason Gilbert is called for his 2nd foul at 12:12. Ten minutes into the game, and we are up 17-10, courtesy of several blocks, steals, and fast-break slam dunks from Detric Slade. Who knew he could run the floor well?

15 minutes in, and we are up 24-16. We haven't shot well, but we've played good defense, forcing them to turn the ball over.

2:48 left in the half, and 7'4" Tim McClain sodomizes his 7'1" defender, serving up a vicious slam dunk to put us up 29-16.

The first half ends, and we find ourselves up 35-21. We are shooting remarkably better, 13-27 from the field. Detric Slade and Tim McClain have 13 and 5 points, respectively, to lead the team. We have so far succeeded in limiting Larry Faulkner's shooting. Let's hope that this carries over in the 2nd half.

Five minutes into the 2nd half, and we are up 41-23. Detric Slade is having a great offensive night, 17 points on 7/10 shooting.

NJIT makes a run, capitalizing on Jason Gilbert mistiming passes. They cut the lead down to 8, but Jason Gilbert comes to life and hits two threes and a fast-break lay-up to stretch it back to 16, 49-33, 9:45 left.

We are up 58-40 with 4:37 left in the game. Barring anything unexpected, we should win this game.

The next five minutes pass by without concern, and we nab our first win, 65-47!!!

We shoot tha ball over .500, dominate the paint and fast-break points, and play solid defense. We had 19 turnovers to their 21, most of them unforced errors.

Detric Slade played a great overall game, he picked his shots well, and attacked the basket. He is the POG.

It feels good to leave the court with a win.

Jason Gilbert played a good game despite turning the ball over 6 times. Jerome Hazelton will keep coming off the bench for now, but we do see a lot of potential in him. He's already leading the team in assists, and looks like he will be a solid starter next year.

I think I will keep my current line-up and settings the way they are for now, and see how the next game goes.

George Mason @ Loyola Chicago Scouting Report

We have the advantage over the PG spot, we are even at the SF/SG/PF spots. They have the C advantage and the bench advantage. Their SF Gordon York is averaging 16 ppg, and we want to keep tabs on him.

Offensive Style: Loyola Chicago runs a normal paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport a balanced attack with their primary set being the 5 out offense.

Defensive Style: Loyola Chicago rarely seems to press. In the half court their primary defense is man-to-man.

George Mason (1-2) @ Loyola Chicago (1-1)
November 26, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason

- Get Jason Gilbert going early - he needs a big game tonight (ONLY IF HE DOESN'T GET INTO FOUL TROUBLE)
- Take away the inside shots and force them to shoot long jumpers
- Shot selection is key - an average scoring offense needs to find good shots

Loyola Chicago
- Be careful - they like to run the floor for quick shots
- Force turnovers and easy baskets off the press (what press?)
- Capitalize on the 13.0 turnovers per game averaged by George Mason

Game:

We win the tip, and Jason Gilbert turns the ball over on his very first pass. Why am I not surprised. Gordon York is then fouled by Austin Hastie off a jumper, and Loyola Chicago open up the game with one made free throw.

We get good looks, and are able to hit our shots well. Detric Slade is fouled on a fast-break dunk and completes a three-point play at 14:53. We are up 12-5.

Loyola Chicago mounts a serious run, and we fail to hit our shots. We are barely holding on to the lead. 18-14, 9:46 left in the half.

Hazelton and Tompson come off the bench and ignite the offense, scoring 12 points in the next 3 minutes. We are up 30-18, 6:14 remaining.

The rest of the half sees Loyola Chicago get into foul trouble. For every basket they make, we seem to be able to hit a couple of free throws. The half ends with us ahead 44-28. We are 18/21 from the free-throw line, compared to their 5/7. I'm glad we're not fouling like crazy tonight. Detric Slade already has 11 points and 5 rebounds, to lead GM. On to the second half.

Loyola Chicago mounts a 10-4 run to start the half, and we turn the ball over a couple of times to see our lead dwindle. We are up 48-38 with 14:55 left in the game.

They slowly chip off our lead, and Jason Gilbert turns the ball over three straight times! He already has a total of 7 TOs. Our lead is down to 3, 48-47, 11:17 to go.

Loyola Chicago's Ron Hill hits a mid-range jumper to give them the lead, 49-48, 9:38 left. We have been outscored 21-4 in the first ten minutes of this second half, and we desperately need a basket. Hazelton and the bench brigade come in to see if they can inject life into this team.

Eric Younger breaks the run by hitting a wide open jumper. Loyola Chicago is up 53-50, 8:04 left in the game.

Loyola Chicago then goes on a complete tear... they go on a 13-2 run off of 4 turnovers from our players, and are now up 66-52, 4:55 left in the game. We've only scored 8 points in the 2nd half.

We rally back with a quick basket and four free throws. We are down. Loyola Chicago's Drew Swygart then hits a crushing 3-pointer. They are up 69-57, 3:00 left, and we are losing hope.

The rest of the game plays out, and we fail to come back. We lost 74-59. Loyola Chicago outscored us 48-15 in the 2nd half. We drop to a disappointing 1-3 record. We just turned the ball over too much tonight.

Gilbert had 7 TOs, and will most likely come off the bench next game.

My patience with Jason Gilbert has reached its limit. He is being demoted to the bench, and Jerome Hazelton is going to start at PG for us. Austin hastie has also been sent to the bench, and John Rude is put in the starting line-up. Austin Walker's defense more than makes up for his lackluster offense, and we decide to keep him in the roster.

We put offensive pace at a higher level (7), lets see if I can coax my guys to try and shoot the ball more often and avoid turnovers. (The obvious consequence is that we might be jacking up horrible shots.)

George Mason @ Tennessee-Martin Scouting Report

We have the advantage over the PG and SG spot, we are even at the C/PF spots. They have the SF spot advantage, and our benches are equal.

Offensive Style: Tennessee-Martin runs a slow paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport a inside attack with their primary set being the flex offense.

Defensive Style: Tennessee Martin press at points throughout the game. In the half court their primary defense is 2-3 zone and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

George Mason (1-3) @ Tennessee-Martin (2-2)
November 30, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Get off to a good start and get the crowd out of the game
  • Attack the basket - force them out of their defensive gameplan
  • Play hard for the full 40 - any letdown could be costly
Tennessee Martin
  • Be careful with the ball - George Mason averages 15.8 turnovers per game
  • Attack the basket - force them out of their defensive gameplan
  • Get to the free throw line
Game:

We win the tip, but miss two early shots. The first basket is scored by TNMAR off a fast break dunk.

The score is 8-4, TNMAR leading, with 15:08 to go. We haven't been able to get our rhythm going yet.

We fail to score in the next five minutes, and TNMAR is up 13-4, 10:01 left. We're 2-11 from the field, and it's slowly frustrating the guys. Jason GIlbert comes in at 9:22, and immediately hits a three point shot to put us back on the board, 13-7.

Gilbert seems to have taken a liking to his role coming off the bench, as he scores 8 more points, and ties the game, 20-20, 3:08 left in the half.

The first half ends, Tennessee-Martin up 25-24. We're shooting badly (ugh), but we've been able to play good defense. Turnovers aren't being caused by the PG spot anymore, but now it's from the posts. Let's hope we don't collapse in this one like we did the last game.

We can't find a bucket coming out of the half, and our only point is off one free throw from Willis Jacobson. We trail 30-25, 17:03 left.

The score is 38-31, TNMAR up by 7, 12:51 to go. They are slowly pulling away, and we must play better defense if we're going to catch-up.

We go on an 8-0 run spearheaded by Detric Slade, and cut the lead down to 3, 42-39, 8:51 left in the game.

Jason Gilbert comes in and tries to provide an offensive spark. He hogs the ball and shoots three triples that rattle out. TNMAR has regained their composure, and are up 48-41, 6:10 left.

We get into foul-trouble, and are unable to score. It's 50-41, TNMAR leading, 3:07 left in the game. I can already smell the loss.

After having played relatively non-discrepit game, Jerome Hazelton is called for three straight travelling violations and misses 6 shots in the final 3 minutes.

We hang in there in the first half, but fade away in the 2nd. Different methods, same results. We lose, 56-48, and drop to 1-4. Detric Slade scores 14 and has 9 rebounds to lead the Patriots in this loss.

Maybe Hazelton at the 1 and Gilbert at the 2...seems like he's more of a scorer.

That's what I was thinking. But I'm concerned about Gilbert being completely dominated on the defensive end by taller opposing SG's.

Well, they're all about the same height, so you'll have that problem either way.

Post-Game Moves:

I might as well try anything. We put Gilbert into the starting SG spot. I tweak Zone defense to a minimum, and tell my perimeter guys to run the fast break. I want to see some solid defense, and max it out. I also max out our offensive crash boards. I decide to play full-court defense the entire game as well.

Portland St. (2-3) @ George Mason (1-4)
December 3, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Find a way to score - 57.6 points per game isn't going to get the job done.
  • Take away the inside shots and force them to shoot long jumpers
  • Play tough D - Portland St. only gives up 64.0 points per game
Portland St.
  • Look to force at least the 16.8 turnovers per game averaged
  • Get off to a good start to get the crowd out of the game
  • Play hard for the full 40 - any letdown could be costly
Game:

Portland St. wins the tip. They open scoring by drawing Jason Gilbert to his first foul, and nailing two free-throws.

Gilbert is called for his next foul at 15:15. We are down by two points, 9-7. So far it's been an evenly fought game.

Fouls plague both teams for the next five minutes, and we both find ourselves in the penalty early. We are up 21-17, 10:22 left in the game. We are shooting reasonably well, and are 10/11 from the FT line.

Portland St. leads 31-28, 4:34 left in the game. A total of 35 FT attempts have been taken in the game, and we combine for 19 fouls.

It is a close game, Portland St. leading 40-39 at the half. 42 FT attempts for the first half, and a total of 25 fouls. Yikes. Detric Slade, Jerome Hazelton and John Rude lead the team with 7, 6, and 6 points apiece.

Detric Slade opens the 2nd half by spearheading a 9-2 run. We are up 49-42, 15:32 lef tin the game.

Hazelton hits a couple of jumpers, to extend the run, but is quickly called for his 3rd and 4th fouls. We are up 55-42, 12:40 left in the game.

Portland St. goes on a 5-2 run, and our lead is down to 10, 57-47, 10:21 left in the game. I'm getting scoring from everyone, which is good.

We are up by 12, 65-53, 5:25 left in the ballgame, and Hazelton fouls out early. I hope my guys know that they need to play the full 40 to leave with the win.

Austin Walker is having a good game off the bench, and he helps keep the boat afloat. We are up 71-57, 3:09 lef tin the game.

Two minutes left, and Portland St. is going on a last-ditch effort. We are up by 9 points, 75-66, when they start fouling.

We hold on for our 2nd win of the year!!! We win this one 79-66. Four players score in double digits for us. Detric Slade wins player of the game with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 steals, and 2 assists.

It was a foul-happy game, but I will take the win, no matter how ugly it was.

George Mason (2-4) @ Denver (2-2)
December 7, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Push the ball up the floor for open looks.
  • Look to force the 15.7 turnovers per game averaged
  • Find Walter Kante on their shots - he's their top rebounder
Denver
  • Duez Mason needs to create for everyone around him tonight
  • Get to the free throw line
  • Figure out how to stop Detric Slade - he's their offensive star
Game:

They win the tip, and open up scoring with Raymond Swogger hitting a 3-pointer.

Jason Gilbert immediately lights up the scoreboard for George Mason with 8 points, paving the way with two triples, and we are up 13-7, 15:19 left in the first half.

Denver rallies back, and they close down on our lead. We are up by 3 points, 22-19, with 9:51 left in the half. Our reserves come in, hopefully they give us a jolt of energy.

Tim McClain, our 7'4", 300 pound behemoth, suddenly comes to life and starts hitting hook shots, blocking jumpers, and grabbing rebounds. We find ourselves up by 6, 36-30, 4:36 left in the half.

The first half ends, with us ahead, 44-41. We are shooting the ball well (15/30 FG), and moving the ball fluidly (4 TOs). We are getting out-rebounded by a small margin, though. I hope my guys can keep it up in the 2nd half.

Denver starts off by drawing Detric Slade's third foul in the early minutes of the 2nd half. They then go on a strong rally, and they tie the game, 51-51. Jason Gilbert promptly hits another three to stop that run. We are up 54-51, 14:08 left in the game

Jason Gilbert is having a great shooting night. He hits another three to put us up by 6, 63-57, 10:24 left in the game. He already has 20 points, on 7/11 shooting. Willis Jacobson is also having a remarkable game, he's got 10 points already, and he's not known for his scoring prowess.

We are slowly increasing our lead. We're ahead 72-65, 4:54 left in the ballgame.

Two minutes left, and we're up 76-69. Looking to close this one out before Denver gets the opportunity to rally their boys. Detric Slade hits a crucial jump-shot, putting us up by 9. 78-69, with 1:23 left.

Jason Gilbert then takes over completely. He hits 5 free throws, and a jumper to seal the deal and the win. We are victorious, 85-72! Jason Gilbert finally shows up and introduces himself to the George Mason faithful, he finishes with 27 points on 8/13 shooting. We had a great game from nearly everyone on the roster, I could only wish that we could get these from our guys every single night.

George Mason @ UMKC

Both teams are even on all positions, and our benches are matched up evenly.

Offensive Style: UMKC runs a normal paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport a balanced attack with their primary set being the flex offense.

Defensive Style: UMKC rarely seems to press. In the half court their primary defense is man-to-man and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

George Mason (3-4) @ UMKC (5-2)
December 14, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Figure out how to stop Al Cantrel - he's their offensive star
  • Keep tabs on Kareem Jones - he's their playmaker on the floor
  • Jerome Hazelton needs to create for everyone around him tonight
Denver
  • Get Kareen Jones going early - he needs a big game tonight
  • Commit fewer than the 15.4 turnovers per game averaged
  • Look to force at least the 16.4 turnovers per game averaged
Game:

It's gametime! UMKC wins the tip. It takes a couple of possessions before both teams get into the rhythm, and John Rudes opens up scoring by hitting a running jumper.

We struggle to make shots, and are down by two points, 7-5, 14:55 left in the half. We are 2/9 from the field so far.

Managing to put up a couple of good offensive sets, we bounce back and are up 15-11, 10:04 left in the half. Jason Gilbert is shooting horrendously, however, 0/6 from the field.

We hold steady on the lead, thanks to our abilities to draw fouls and play good defense. We're ahead 26-21, 5:19 left in the half.

The half ends, and we are ahead, 35-33. Both teams are shooting below 40%. Jerome Hazelton has 7 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals at the half. Detric Slade has 2 points and 10 rebounds.

Jason Gilbert finally comes to life, hitting his very first jump shot. We are ahead by 5 points, 45-40, 15:26 left in the game.

Gilbert takes over in the next five minutes, scoring 12 points in the half so far. We are ahead, 55-48, 10:14 left.

UMKC goes on a 12-0 run before Jerome Hazelton puts a stop to it. We are down 60-57, 4:48 left in the game. It's gut check time.

They go on another scoring run, and they've outscored us 19-2 since 10:14. It's 67-57, 3:04 left. I scream in frustration as my guys suddenly lose the ability to defend and take care of the ball. We've had a total of 9 turnovers in the past 7 minutes.

We had reasonable control of the game for the first 30 minutes, and then we just turned into shit. We lose this one 75-60. Time to tweak with the depth chart a bit.

We are currently 3-5 in non-conference games and are going to go up against Gardner-Webb for our last non-conference game before the CAA games.

I decide to favor more outside shots. I figure I'll let the boys shoot themselves out, perhaps that will show them that shooting bricks is NOT an option for this team.

I do instruct them to hold on to the ball more during half-court sets, and let the offense develop.

George Mason @ Gardner-Webb

We are even at the PG and C positions. We have the advantage at SG and PF, they have the upper hand on the SF spot.

Offensive Style: Gardner-Webb runs a fast paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport an outside attack with their primary set being the flex offense.

Defensive Style: Gardner-Webb press at points throughout the game. In the half court their primary defense is man-to-man and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

George Mason (3-5) @ Gardner-Webb (3-7)
December 21, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Step up the pressure in the half court on defense
  • Figure out how to stop Doug White - he's their offensive star
  • Capitalize on the 12.4 turnovers per game averaged
Gardner-Webb
  • Be careful - they like to run the floor for quick shots
  • Take away the inside shots and force them to shoot long jumpers (Thank you, we will.)
  • Keep tabs on Jerome Hazelton - he's their playmaker on the floor.
Game:

After five minutes, we are up 8-6. The motion offense looks nice, as Gilbert and Slade are getting touches on the floor. Jacobson looks uncomfortable running the offense, though; he has 2 turnovers so far.

We are ahead, 22-19, 10:00 left in the half. Jason Gilbert and Detric Slade have 14 combined points so far. Ugh. We are turning the ball over too much, 6 right now. We are both in foul trouble, I have a feeling this game is going to come down to who can force the other team to give them free-throws in this half.

As a side-note, nothing gives me more joy than to watch our 7'4" center, Tim "John" McClain, dunk on some unsuspecting 6-foot something guard.

The next ten minutes consist of a see-saw battle. The half ends with GWebb hitting a 3, giving them the lead at half-time: 42-41. Both teams are shooting well, about 55% each. We are 4/7 from 3, and they are 4/5. Yikes. It's more the lack of defense than the skill in shooting, though.

On to the second half!

GWebb comes out strong, and they lead 55-48, 13:14 left in the game. We need to get going if we want to win this one.

Thank you for listening. We go on a 7 point run, forcing two turnovers, and tie the game 55-55, 12:00 left. Austin Hastie and David Tompson orchestrate that nice slice of pie off the bench.

We go on a scoring blitz, and continue the dropping of points. It's an 18-4 run so far, and we're up 66-59, 7:12 left in the game. Kenny Darting, their SG, puts and end to that with a 3-point buzz killer, an assist, and a free-throw. It's 66-65, 6:33 left. Gilbert misses two shots, and GWebb scores again, they lead 67-66, 5:55 left.

It's another see-saw fight. But they pull away with two good defensive stops. Less than a minute remaining, and they're up 78-71. We hit a 3-point shot, and it's 78-74! We foul their inbounds pass, 0:37 left.

Havens, their PG, calmly walks to the line. BRICK! We rebound the missed 1-and-1 opportunity, and we quickly call a time-out!

The ball rotates, and it ends up in GIlbert's hand. HE SHOOTS FOR THREE! NO! BRICK! GWebb rebounds, and we foul, 0:19 left. They are going to shoot a 1-and-1.

Haven's arm doesn't flinch this time. He drops two free throws in. They're up 80-74, with nineteen seconds left.

Gilbert throws up a three and misses the rim completely. They regain control of the ball, and we don't even bother fouling anymore. We lose this game, 80-74. Tough break.

It's time for the CAA conference games, and our very first opponent are the James Madison Dukes.

I decide to go for a balanced type of play in our very first in-conference game.

Starting Lineups:

Jerome Hazelton
Jason Gilbert
Austin Hastie
Willis Jacobson
Detric Slade

George Mason @ James Madison

Advantage Us: SG
Advantage Them: PG, Bench

Offensive Style: James Madison runs a normal paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport a balanced attack with their primary set being the princeton offense.

Defensive Style: James Madison press at points throughout the game. In the half court their primary defense is man-to-man and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

George Mason (3-6) @ James Madison (6-3)
December 28, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Set good screens and create open shots in the half court
  • Look to force at least the 14.0 turnovers per game averaged
  • Keep tabs on J.P. Dowling - he's their playmaker on the floor
James Madison
  • Every possesion counts tonight - good shot selection will be key
  • Keep tabs on Jerome Hazelton - he's their playmaker on the floor
  • Capitalize on the 13.7 turnovers per game averaged.
Game:

We start off slowly, but gain momentum as we approach the 5-minute mark. Austin Hastie has already sent two guys to the bench, drawing two fouls a piece on his main defender and his sub. We are ahead, 9-3, 15:25 left in the half.

Austin Hastie and Jason Gilbert heat it up from the 3-point line, and it seems like we can do no wrong. We are up, 26-12, 10:03 left in the half.

The last ten minutes of the first half see us trying to keep the lead safe. The bench troop in at around the 9 minute mark, hold on to the lead, and head out by the 2 minute mark to allow our starters to come back and try to get warmed up again.

The first half ends, with George Mason in the lead, 48-34. Austin Hastie leads all scorers with 14 points. I am concerned about our free-throw shooting... we are only 6/13, that's horrible.

Good news is that we only have 5 turnovers so far, to their 10. We're also out-rebounding them 19-10.

Second half...

James Madison starts the second half horribly, turning the ball over three straight times. We start losing focus as well, missing jumper after jumper. It's a good thing we're rebounding well tonight (13 offensive rebounds so far) that we're actually hitting second chance shots. We're ahead 56-36, 15:19 left in the game.

Detric Slade is having a great game, and he only emphasizes that during the next five minutes. Slade hits three jump shots, and grabs several defensive rebounds. The score is 69-40, 10:06 left. I certainly hope my guys will try to keep this lead intact.

Tim McClain, Detric Slade's 7'4" sub, is also having a monster game from the bench. 10 points and 5 rebounds already. The score is 75-49, 4:10 left in the game. You can't put away the smile on my face. I'm going to win my very first in-conference game.

We win! Final score: 79-55. The player of the game is Detric Slade, 16 points, 12 rebounds, 8/13 FG. Hastie didn't attempt a shot in the 2nd half, but I guess he knew that everyone else needed to get involved in the game. Everyone had a good game... I wish we were like this during the OOC games, but I'll take what I can get.

Post-Game Report:

Grabbing that big win against James Madison was something that we needed. If we're going to even get close to our AD's requirements, we're going to have to keep winning these IC games.

Next up is Hofstra.

Starting Lineup:

Jerome Hazelton
Jason Gilbert
Austin Hastie
Willis Jacobson
Detric Slade

George Mason @ Hofstra

Advantage, Us: SG, Bench
Advantage, Them: SF

Offensive Style: Hofstra runs a normal paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport an inside attack with their primary set being the motion offense.

Defensive Style: Hofstra press at points throughout the game. In the half court their primary defense is man-to-man and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

George Mason (4-6) @ Hofstra (5-5)
December 31, 2007

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Attack the basket - force them out of their gameplan
  • Jerome Hazelton needs to create for everyone around him tonight
  • Play hard for the full 40 - any letdown could be costly
Hofstra
  • Get Clarence Nicholson going early - he needs a big game tonight
  • Take away the inside shots and force them to shoot long jumpers
  • Play hard for the full 40 - any letdown could be costly
Game:

We are off to a bad start, going 0/5 from the field, and Jerome Hazelton catching two early fouls. We normalize things with our inside defense, however, and are only down by one point, 6-7, 15:14 left in the half.

The rest of the half was just a complete mess. Turnovers, missed shots, bad passes, fouls. Ugh. 9 turnovers and 15 fouls in the first half, on our side alone. Yeesh. We are down 40-24. I feel like my team is Jekyll and Hyde. More often than not, Hyde is the one that shows up. Someone has to step up for us to win this one.

We slowly try to claw our way back, and are only down by 9, 47-38, 10:52 left in the game. We're unable to come any closer than that. We lose the game, 68-51.

Jason Gilbert has a horrendous game, scoring no points, going 0/11 for the game. I seriously consider benching him for the next game, out of spite. The ony bright spot is Tim McClain's second consecutive good game.

Losing sucks. It sucks big. Yeesh.

We just have to put that tough loss behind us. On to the next game.

Tim McClain has been given the chance to start. Time to see if our 7'4", 300 pound sophomore can whoop some ass as a starter. Austin Walker has been given the chance to start once again, and Jason Gilbert and his streaky shooting go down to the bench.

Starting Lineup:

PG - Jerome Hazelton
SG - Austin Walker
SF- Austin Hastie
PF - Detric Slade
C - Tim McClain

Delaware @ George Mason

Offensive Style: They run a fast paced offense with not many offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport a balanced attack with their primary set being the princeton offense.

Defensive Style: They rarely seem to press. In the half court their primary defense is man-to-man and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

Delaware (5-6) @ George Mason (4-7)
January 4, 2008

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Keep tabs on Kendall Welch - he's their playmaker on the floor
  • Be disciplined on defense and force them out of their half court offensive sets
  • Find Andrew Branch on shots - he's their top rebounder
Delaware
  • Take away the inside shots and force them to shoot long jumpers
  • Attack the basket - force them out of their gameplan
  • Set good screens and create open shots in the half court
Game:

This is our first game at home in over a month. It feels nice to be back in familiar territory.

We actually start off well with good shot selection and ball movement. We are ahead 18-9, 9:44 left in the half. Jason Gilbert comes in and immediately picks up two fouls. Yeesh.

The first half ends... and we are miraculously in the lead! 35-18. We had a great first half, defensively. Tim McClain and Austin Walker look like they're making a case for me to let them stay in the starting line-up. Detric Slade also looks pleased that he doesn't have to go up against opposing centers anymore, punishing opposing forwards instead.

On to the second half.

Ten minutes in, and we are ahead, 51-30. Nice. Ten minutes to hang on to this lead and another victory!

They mount a run, but we hang on. The clock ticks down, and we win this one, 67-59. Woohoo.

Detric Slade is the player of the game with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Austin Walker played a great defensive game, while Tim McClain had a superb outing in his first start of the season.

That was an eye-opening game. Now, if only we stop the Jeckyl and Hyde thing that we have. We gotsa win two games in a row!

My lineup is going to stay the way it is. Tim McClain got a chance to start, and he didn't disappoint.

Starting Lineup:

PG - Jerome Hazelton

C - Tim McClain

George Mason @ Towson

Offensive Style: They run a fast paced offense with some offensive freedom baskets. In the half court they sport a balanced attack with their primary set being the 5 out offense.

Defensive Style: They rarely seem to press. In the half court their primary defense is man-to-man and for pressure defense they go with a full court man-to-man.

George Mason (5-7) @ Towson (3-9)

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Get to the free-throw line
  • Find David Miller on shots - he's their top rebounder
  • Step up the pressure in the half court defense
Towson
  • Get to the free-throw line
  • Keep tabs on Jerome Hazelton - he's their playmaker on the floor
  • Run the offense - easy buckets with good execution equals a W
Game:

We start off slow. Detric Slade picks up two quick fouls and heads to the bench. We are down, 4-7, in the first two minutes of the game. Austin Walker is called for his 2nd foul two minutes later. Not a good start. We are down, 6-14, 15:58 left in the half.

We struggle defensively, and can't seem to get open shots. We find ourselves in a hole, down 19-31, 9:34 left in the half.

We try to mount a run, but they just keep us at bay. They're ahead 52-36 at halftime. It felt like every shot they took fell in. They are 18/25 from the field, and 6/6 from the 3. Yeesh. Jason Gilbert had a good 1st half, with 11 points, giving us energy to try and keep up with Towson.

The second half turns out to be a more defensive affair. We narrow down the lead to 13, 48-61, 9:38 left in the game. We lost this one in the first half, which is disappointing, to say the least.

We lose the game, 61-77, a complete breakdown. The trend continues. We were outrebounded and outshot. Ugh. Detric Slade had 12 points and only one rebound. Meh. Austin Walker shot 1 of 9... man, I need a shooter, BAD.

George Mason (5-8) @ Northeastern (4-9)

Game Keys:

George Mason
  • Get Jason Gilbert going early - he needs a big game tonight
  • Run the offense - easy buckets with good execution equals a W
  • Step up the pressure in the half court defense
Northeastern
  • Shot selection is key - an average scoring offense needs to find good shots
  • Be careful with the ball
  • Every possession counts tonight - good shot selection will be key
Game:

We find ourselves down, 10-16, in the first five minutes of the game. Again, we're having trouble defending against the three ball. Yeesh. They've already shot 3/4 from beyond the arc.

We try to go on a run, but are held back. More scoring. They are up by eight. 27-35, 6:29 left in the half. They've shot 6/8 from the three.

The half ends, us down by 7 points. 38-45. Jerome Hazelton is having a good game, 11 points and 3 assists, no missed shots yet. Detric Slade has 12 points and 3 rebounds.

We go on a run to start the second half. We cut the lead down to two, 43-45, a minute and thirty seconds into the second half. They score, but we answer with a three, and take the lead, 48-47, 17:25 left in the game.

It's a see-saw battle from there, and the score is tied 60-60, 10:48 left in the game.

We manage to go on a small run, thanks to some creative shots by Jason Gilbert and John Rude, and find ourselves ahead, 70-67, 7:13 left in the ball game.

Holding a three point lead with elss than four minutes left, we fumble the ball twice in a row, and concede four quick points. We are down, 74-75, 3:07 left in the game.

We rally with a steal, and a foul! But they hit daggers with two consecutive three point shots. Ugh. It's not looking good. We are down 77-83, 1:27 left.

We don't make a shot, and lose the game 77-84. This hurts, since I think we did a great job offensively. We just weren't able to guard against the three-pointers (they hit 10/18).

Jerome Hazelton has 16 points and 6 assists. Detric Slade has 21 points and 6 rebounds. Tim McClain had a good all-around game, solidifying his bid to remain as a starter.

I think I'll be fast-simming the rest of my games with post-match reports. This is taking too long. harhar.

January Report

George Mason Patriots
'07-'08 Record: 9-10
'07-'08 Conference Record: 6-4

Recruiting

We already have three players who've signed LOI's to play for GMU next season. They're not exactly a great bunch, mostly two-star players. I'm thinking about withholding my two remaining scholarships for transferees (despite the one-year sitout rule)

Schedule

The good news: we go 4-1 over our last five games in January. Our only loss came against Georgia St., who completely outplayed us en route to a blowout.

The bad news: We lost Jerome Hazelton and Detric Slade for our first game in February due injuries suffered in our recent game against Old Dominion. Hazelton is out with a sore leg, and Slade is out with a sore wrist.

February Report
George Mason Patriots
Schedule

We had a great February, winning seven of our nine remaining regular season games, and defeating Akron in the bracket-breaker. We are 3rd in the CAA, with Georgia St. at #1 and Drexel at #2.

Jason Gilbert has found a niche in the starting lineup at SG once again, and has led us in scoring most of the way.

We will be waiting for the winner of the Towson-Hofstra game to learn who we're going to face in the Conference Quaterfinals.

CAA Conference Tournament Results:

March 3, 2008 - First Round

Upsets galore, as Hofstra, James Madison and Northeastern advance to the next round of the Conference Tournament. Old Dominion is the only higher seed that goes on to the next round.

(12) NC-Wilmington 64 @ (5) Old Dominion 71
(11) Hofstra 74
@ (6) Towson 66
(10) James Madison 85
@ (7) Delaware 81
(9) Northeastern 71 @ (8) Virginia Commonwealth 66

March 4, 2008 - Quarterfinals

Georgia St. almost had their Conference title hopes cut short, and survive a scare from Northeastern, winning by one point. Old Dominion decimate William & Mary to advance. Drexel wins by ten against James Madison to head on to the next round.

We play a superb team game against Hofstra and advance to the next round to face Drexel. Jason Gilbert had 18 points, Jerome Hazelton had 15 points and 5 assists. Austin Walker had 6 steals coming off the bench, and we played a solid defensive game to secure the win.

(9) Northeastern 64 @ (1) Georgia St. 65
(5) Old Dominion 70 @ (4) William & Mary 56
(11) Hofstra 52 @ (3) George Mason 74
(10) James Madison 59 @ (2) Drexel 69

March 5, 2008 - Semifinals

Georgia St. demolish Old Dominion in their path to the CAA Title. Meanwhile, we eke out a three-point victory against Drexel. It was a helter skelter game with 14 lead changes and 8 ties. In the end, we were able to hold them off by dominating the points in the paint (28 to 14) and fastbreak points (19-2).

(5) Old Dominion 65 @ (1) Georgia St. 87
(3) George Mason 69 @ (2) Drexel 66

March 6, 2008 - Conference Title Game

We battle hard, but fall short of the title... by about 18 points. Georgia St. just owned this season for the CAA, and we were completely outclassed during the game. Hazelton led the way with 14 points, but Kevin Rich and Drew Bland just exploded for Georgia St. with 22 and 23 points each.

(3) George Mason 72 @ (1) Georgia St. 89

NIT / NCAA Tournament Results:

We don't get a bid for the NIT or the NCAA Tournaments, and the season ends early for us.

Drexel got a spot in the NIT Tournament, but was elminated in the first round by San Francisco.

Georgia St. faced #17 Creighton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, looking to cause an upset. They fall short and lose to Creighton 74-77 in a close encounter.

The Final Four:

Florida went through their bracket with relative ease. Kentucky defeated higher ranked teams (including (1) Syracuse and (2) LSU) in all the games in their bracket to make it to the Final Four. Indiana's only real challenge in their bracket was (5) North Carolina, who they beat by four points. UCLA beat (1) Duke in a great Elite Eight match to earn the right to play in the big dance.

(1) Florida 67 vs. (9) Kentucky 58
(1) Indiana 76 vs. (2) UCLA 69 - OT

The NCAA Championship:

Florida destroys Kentucky, while Indiana outlasts UCLA in overtime. These two teams would then play in an epic encounter. Florida led by as much as 18 points, but Indiana rallies from behind in the final minutes. Florida holds its ground, however, and hang on to a two-point win and the NCAA Title.

(1) Florida 82 vs. (1) Indiana 80

Awards:

We have several players who garner awards at the end of season. It's a slight consolation considering we came up short of winning the conference championship and didn't make it to any of the major tournaments.

CAA Freshman of the Year: #4 FR Jerome Hazelton PG
CAA Defensive Player of the Year: #50 SR Detric Slade C
CAA 2nd Team All-Conference: #1 SR Jason Gilbert PG

Recruits:

Yes, I think we under-recruited. I have a feeling it's going to be a struggle to compete in the CAA next year.

C Daniel Demory | Richmond, VA | WSSN National Ranking (Overall: 932, Position: 164), WSSN Regional Ranking (Overall: 227, Position: 45)

Top Team Goals:

We were able to complete all the goals the DA put in front of us for the season. Great.
  • Finish in Top Half of Conference - Suceeded
  • Finish Above .500 - Succeeded
  • Improve School Prestige - Succeeded
Assistant Coaches:

I retain all my assistants for next season. I'm not looking to shuffle up the salary structure right now.

Board Request:

I ask for a bigger budget to work with next season. They deny me the money. Bastards.

That's it for this year. See you next season!

Pre-Season Recruiting:

We have two graduating seniors, C David Tompson and SF Austin Hastie. Austin Hastie is the only scholarship player. Having only one scholarship to give out allows us to purchase the Atlantic East Gold Report that not only gives us a 1-5 star rating of the top 200 players in the AE, but also ranks them by position and by overall, gives us their interest in playing for us, and provides information on who the top teams in the running for that player are.

It costs us $30,000; A hefty sum, considering we only have $50,750 to spend for the entire recruiting process. We also sign up for the Big Apple Showcase, which costs us about $3,700. It leaves us with $17,050 left to use to recruit one guy.

It turns out that we still weren't attractive to any of the top 200 recruits in our regions. We were able to get a verbal confirmation from a percieved top-200 guy, though.

OOC Games Report

We go 4-5 during the OOC games. Eric Younger has established himself as the team's go-to guy, in a team devoid of scorers. Of course, he achieves this by quantity-shooting but, still, he is our leading scorer as we head into the games that matter most.

So C Tim McClain is doing well and is a sight to behold (being 7'4", 300 lbs.) Fr C Daniel Demory has received the nod over Sr C David Tompson as the backup big man. We only want to give Demory more minutes in order to develop him faster.

So PF Kris Patterson gets the nod to start at PF after playing only 17 games last year as a back-up. He seems to have fit nicely into the role.

Jerome Hazelton, William Monfre, and Hollis Sowder all have quality minutes at the PG spot. Hazelton is trying to get it done, but is turning the ball over too much.

Sr SF Austin Hastie has had problems with the entire team, but has performed consistently. His back-up, Jordan Spurgeon will be looking to take the reigns of the spot once Hastie graduates.

CAA Games (Dec '08 - Jan '09) Report

We are 6-4 in in-conference play, and are on a 4-way tie for 2nd place in the CAA. We've only had a couple of big injuries, mostly to Daniel Demory and Kelvin Morris, our young big men, but they have had a big impact on how we play our games. Eric Younger continues to lead the team in scoring and in steals.

CAA Games (Feb '09) Report

We start off February with several crucial wins, and even enjoy the top spot for a week or so before crashing down to earth with disappointing losses against Towson, Northeastern, and Drexel. Our bench got hit by several injuries in this spell, and the back-ups weren't playing 100% on the court.

We did, however, win bracket-breaker Sunday against Davidson. Not that it would matter right now. We need to win the CAA Conference Tourney in order to gain a bid for the NCAA or the NIT tourneys.

2009 CAA Conference Tournament Results:

March 3, 2009 - First Round

The defending CAA Champs, Georgia St., have their work cut out, having to play in the first round in order to make it to the Quarterfinals. They get by NC Wilmington and advance. We face #5 Northeastern in the next round. Delaware and James Madison get the upsets in order to advance.

(12) VA Commonwealth 60 @ (5) Northeastern 72
(11) NC Wilmington 68 @ (6) Georgia St. 81
(10) Delaware 75 @ (7) Towson 62

March 4, 2009 - Quarterfinals

The defending champs advance to the Semifinals by defeating Drexel by two points. James Madison also get the upset on William & Mary. Old Dominion will face James Madison tomorrow.

We win against Northeastern in an exciting OT game. Eric Younger had 20 points, and Sr Austin Hastie had a great game (15 pts, 7 ast, 6 reb).

(9) James Madison 76 @ (1) William & Mary 68
(10) Delaware 65 @ (2) Old Dominion 69
(6) Georgia St. 69 @ (3) Drexel 67
(5) Northeastern 76 @ (4) George Mason 83 OT

March 5, 2009 - Semifinals

In a rematch of last year's Semifinals, Georgia St. march their way back into the Championship game by defeating Old Dominion for the second straight year.

We, on the other hand, also pave our way to the Championship game by defeating James Madison, setting up a rematch of last year's CAA Conference Title match. Eric Younger led the way for us with 20 points. Our bench outscored James Madison's by 19 points, 30-11.

(4) George Mason 71 @ (9) James Madison 64
(6) Georgia St. 82 @ (2) Old Dominion 73

March 6, 2009 - Conference Title Game

We came in prepared, and we walked out CAA Conference Champions. Extracting revenge was certainly sweet for us, as we dish out a whooping against Georgia St. This also means we're likely to get a bid to the NCAA or the NIT tourney! Yay for March Madness!

Eric Younger played only 16 minutes, and scored 12 points. Jerome Hazelton had 6 assists. Our bench stepped up again, outscoring Georgia St.'s bench 30-17.

We lose to Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, in a game that we didn't really didn't have a chance to win.

The Final Four:

#2 Indiana would return to the Final Four representing the Pittsburgh bracket by defeating #9 Stanford 72-62, Stanford beat #1 Gonzaga in the Sweet Sixteen. #3 Marquette defeated would-be upstart #13 Long Beach State in a blowout, 75-50, to win the Columbus bracket. #12 Southern Illinois defeated #6 Georgia 60-47, who had beaten defending champions Florida, to represent the Nashville bracket. #1 UCLA swept through the Spokane bracket with ease, eliminating #2 Georgetown, 78-67, to reach the Final Four as the only #1 seed still in the race for the Title.

(1) UCLA 71 vs. (12) Southern Illinois 51
(2) Indiana 81 vs. (3) Marquette 61

The NCAA Championship:

UCLA and Indiana each defeated their opponents by 20-points to make it to the big dance. This is a rematch of last year's Final Four match-up that Indiana won in OT. Indiana returns to the NCAA Finals in the hopes of winning the coveted title after losing to Florida last year.
Indiana ends up as bridesmaids once again., however, as UCLA marches to the NCAA Title via a 72-60 victory over Indiana.

Awards:

A couple of awards for two of our players this year. CAA 2nd Team All-Conference: #10 JR Eric Younger SG
CAA 2nd Team All-Conference: #55 JR Tim McClain C

Recruits:

I only had one scholarship to give this year, and we really didn't luck out on any recruits. Bummer.

C Emanuel Page | New Tripoli, PA | WSSN National Ranking (Overall: 1035, Position: 177), WSSN Regional Ranking (Overall: 266, Position: 48)

Top Team Goals:

We were able to complete all the goals the DA put in front of us for the season.
  • Win Conference Tournament - Suceeded
  • Finish Above .500 - Succeeded
  • Improve School Prestige - Succeeded
Assistant Coaches:

All my assistant coaches are retained. Their contracts run for two more years after this one.

Board Request:

We request the board for an increase in recruiting budget. Somehow, our NCAA berth seems to have spurned them to fork over the money! Alright!

Season is done. Whoo.
