Jacksonville Jaguars: Transitioning To Isle of Misfit Toys

The other thread for this team is having problems. You can view it if you're NOT logged in to the forum in most cases, but can't view it if you're logged in. So, it's time for a new thread. The year is 2038. I've built two dominant teams through the draft, and now it's time to see what I can do with undrafted FAs. Since it's a transition, I'm keeping around the players I drafted (and all undrafted FAs) through the 8th year of their careers, then cutting them. The 2038 beginning-of-regular season roster has 25 draftees, and 28 free agents. Seven undrafted FAs will start on opening day. Here's the most recent completed season, 2037:

2037 REPORT

RETIREMENTS/PRELIMINARIES
MLB Morris Reed's career is over after 12 seasons with us. He was the 5(11) pick back in 2025. Reed was scouted as 12/26 coming out of the draft, but grew to a 44/44 player, and played well enough to hold down the starting job for 8 seasons, and even earned 2nd Team All Pro honors once.
SUMMER LEAGUE: RB Kris Wickman

FREE AGENCY
UNMASKING OF NOTE
  • 3rd-year LDT Marty Donaldson, a 31/45 draftee, is up to 53/60.

SIGNINGS/GOODBYES
Goodbye to a bunch of guys. No need to list here. See house rules above. New roster will be listed later in this post.

A LOOK BACK
(A look at our draft from five seasons ago--2032.)
Pick POS LAST FIRST Cur1 Fut1 CurNow FutNow
1(27) TE Rubisch Darren 31 52 74 74
2(26) RB Dancy Rich 22 33 45 45

Decent draft there.

TRAINING CAMP NOTES
  • I wonder if the best find will be QB Lionel Madera. He was 10/25-->11/29, and has no zero ratings.
  • Another nice find looks to be RG Trevor Rose. He was 23/43-->26/46 in his first camp.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: With injuries at 200, some of my IMT guys should see significant playing time this year, and we've even got a couple who will be pressed into duty as full-time starters. As far as overall outlook, we should remain a very good team at least for this year and next. We've got a number of star players in years 6 and 7, though, so once they're gone, I expect to have to work a lot harder to win.

SEASON RESULTS
The releases of the vets definitely brought us back more into the pack of the top-tier teams, and we got smoked in the AFC Championship game. I have a feeling this is going to get more challenging pretty quickly.

RETIREMENTS/PRELIMINARIES
After 13 years in the league, P Reuben Thames calls it a career. He was picked up as an undrafted FA back in 2026. Thames averaged 43.3 yards per punt, and 38.7 net yards over the course of his career, and landed the opposition inside the 20 355 times in 921 career punts. His best year was 2034, when he averaged 45.2 gross, 42.4 net, and had 27 of 53 punts end inside the 20.

SUMMER LEAGUE: SE Brock Roberts

UNMASKING OF NOTE (FA1)
  • QB Lionel Madera, 10/25 when initially signed, is up to 22/35. As this is year 9, Woodard gets released, so Madera will take over as starting QB. Now it gets fun!
  • Burt Danek, a 2nd-year LT who I picked up as a 9/23 player last year, is up to 12/33.
  • RG Trevor Rose is now in season 3, and is 23/43-->36/49. I suspect he'll be a quality lineman for this team.
  • SS Mike Cupp is also a year 3 guy. He's 15/34-->32/43.

*QB: All eyes are on 23/36 Lionel Madera as he takes over the reigns.

RB: We've been doing quite well with the duo of Dancy and McIntyre. However, we have a much weaker OL this year.

*FB: Both guys are blocking-only FBs.

TE: 4-time All-Pro Darren Rubisch is in his 8th year, so this will be his last with Jax. Given that we'll be throwing shorter more this year and don't really have good options out of the backfield, it could be a very big year for him.

WR: Winslett went out for the season in the preseason, but we still have three drafted impact players here.

OL: Only two drafted players remain: C Wright and LG Olevao. It could be interesting here.

DL: Monty Donaldson and some guys who look like stiffs. We'll see how they play.

LB: Same situation here. Mario Knoyle is a stud. Everyone else looks weak.

DB: We'll be starting a couple of IMT guys here.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Our roster rating defines mediocrity: 50. That being said, if Madera is better than scouted, we could still be a contender. He's got some great targets.
SEASON RESULTS
It was fun having to build my game plans around my players, and we were successful overall.

I'm definitely just playing out the string with the drafted players. My interest now lies in the undrafted guys, but I'm sure the continued tracking of the drafted guys will pay dividends down the road. That having been said, it'll be interesting (and fun, I think) to build an offense around a few key guys, rather than having studs all over the place. For example, TE Dejongh looks like he'll be a go-to guy for us for a number of years. He and Madera are the most interesting-looking players on the roster at the moment.

UPDATE:

I'm doing 2040 now, and it turns out that I had enough undrafted FAs who interested me to have 53 players with no draftees, so I decided to go ahead and release all the rest of the formerly drafted players. Henceforth, the only new players I'll be signing will be 1st-3rd year undrafted free agents.

2040 REPORT

RETIREMENTS/PRELIMINARIES
No retirements.
SUMMER LEAGUE: TE Blake Dejongh

FREE AGENCY
UNMASKING OF NOTE
  • TE Dejongh continues his upward climb. He's now 24/38-->41/52.
  • SE Brock Roberts is now 15/23-->29/32 and I wonder if he will be a contributor.
TRAINING CAMP NOTES
  • Rookie SE Dan Mitchell gave me a big 20/32-->27/39. He looks like he'll become a legit deep threat and a solid return man.
  • Another nice find looks to be RG Trevor Rose. He was 23/43-->26/46 in his first camp.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: Hard to tell, with several new starters and a roster rating of six. I'm pretty sure we won't be horrid, but I don't expect to contend for a playoff spot, either.

The running game and pass rush were better than I would have expected. I was a little disappointed in the short passing offense's performance. Still, it looks like we've got some pieces to build on in QB Madera and TE Dejongh. If I can get one WR to step up, we could be in good shape there as well.

AWARDS/RECORDS
Dan Mitchell set a new team record with 2 punt return TDs in the season.
